Great comparison, my 2014 bottle of the 25 has a little bit more than Mike’s bottle and I need to finish it sometime…just don’t want it to be gone. Haven’t seen the new 25 in Indiana yet, but I may have to grab it if I do.

Great comparison, I haven’t tried the new one but little bit spicy is characteristic of European sherry and I love that so might prefer the older version.
Older one is slightly better and more assertive on the palate.
I have 2 bottles of the old Goyne 25 yr and paid $300 each. It's a great sherry whisky that shows it's age. Great review.
I picked up a couple for just over that cost. But that was two years back… great whisky

Quality and interesting review gentlemen. You reminded me that I currently have no 'old' sherry cask whisky on my drinking shelf. They're all young, mainly single cask, expressions. I have some interesting stuff in the bunker like a Yamazaki 18 and a Macallan 18 (1994) which are now so idiotically expensive I don't have the balls to open them. Everybody knows that Macallan 18 is a shadow of its former self. The general consensus is that the 1995 distillation was the last excellent one. I also have a Aberlour 16, which is a single cask, cask strength, first fill Oloroso which has greatness written all over it.
It's hard to find old sherry whisky made to that kind of quality these days. You can still buy the Glengoyne 25 from their website for £400. The Whisky Rush over the past five years or so has seen so much older stock flogged off in single barrels and we're left with a genuine shortage. Anything over 10 years old and a bit brown flies off the shelf in a nano-second. By the way, the Balvenie Single Barrel Sherry came in two guises. One was much more first fill than the other and the only way of knowing was looking at the juice in the bottle before buying. The first fill version was far superior.
It all goes back to the casks doesn't it? I'm a sherry freak and visit bodegas in Spain and talk to them about their whisky partnerships. Let me tell you that most bodegas have no relationship with the whisky industry at all. Now that all sherry bottling is done in Spain there's no mature sherry left in transport barrels any more. Some distilleries like Macallan and Glengoyne, for example, do have long standing arrangements with genuine sherry bodegas but the likelihood of old quality, sherry matured whisky, in all honesty, is set to decline and/or become very exclusive. The sherry industry is far older than the whisky industry and they look after number one. Any good oak will come at a price.
Good point on the Balvenie, I've never actually seen the lighter colored 15's for sale locally. I've seen a bottle, and it's not even remotely close in terms of color. So yeah when we speak of that one we're discussing the more first filled version as it's all we've ever had. Friend in Australia had one of the light ones, I couldn't believe my eyes.
This push for younger and younger sherry "bombs", often with NAS statements or single casks with ultra premium pricing per year of age has NOT sat well with me in recent years. While I can find some great peated whiskies I like young and even at middle ages I can often find some decent bourbon casks. I flat out cannot stand these over the top, ultra young, CS, sherry messes such as the 57.1 KK8. I down right hated that bottle and I'm not afraid to make it known. I'm in the minority though. But it's getting absurd how much money distilleries want for extremely young, unbalanced, CS whisky. I'd rather spend the 400 on this product and KNOW I'm getting quality than gamble away money 100 at a time on some of these young and disappointing sherry bombs.
Excellent commentary Welsh Toro. I often check myself when critiquing current bottlings because I think it’s something old timers do. The “they don’t make them like they used to” syndrome. The problem is, some of us do have several generations of whisky bottling and it was better in the past damnit!! I’m not opposed to modern production methods to create consistency, but I am highly opposed to using inferior products for manufacture. In the last twenty years there is a noticeable decline in quality of ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks in general while price is inflating greatly.
@@cato451 you think bourbon casks are getting worse in the scotch industry? I know there's been changes to the wood quality for all casks, using younger trees, but I've not really noticed a quality drop on good bourbon matured spirit in the same way I have sherry.
@@topshelfdustin3060 not as much Dustin but on occasion I’ve noticed a difference in the quality from say a 1992 bottled Balvenie 15 YO yo to a modern exbourbon matured whisky. More tannins and harshness.
@@cato451 I think those "15 YO" were a bit older but fair enough. I do think there's also just less top dressing today. Used to be you wanted to sell whisky and whisky wasn't selling. So you improved it without changing the name. At least that's my hope, so once this whisky trend dies down a bit, hopefully, we'll see quality return a bit.

So when you say that basically Balvenie 15 is quintessentially sherry does the uniqueness of a single cask factor in more or less to its overall character? I have been spending most of my whisky budget on sherry influenced bottles recently and if its not necessarily a standout aside from its competence I feel I'd be better off going for a 2021 Loch Gorm or an old packaging Benromach 10 Imperial Proof in terms of expanding my palate instead of having just another sherried Scotch. no matter how well its done there comes a point where it starts to be a tad redundant in my opinion.
Another solid review. Two questions- Dustin, how often do you launder that shirt? ;) And what the heck is your guys annual spend on whisky? You consistently review such beautiful high-end bottles?

Do you recommend buying Glendronach Single Casks or Glenfarclas Family casks overall？If say around 20-25 years old
Glendronach absolutely, most have been excellent but the GFFC are very hit and miss in my opinion. Look for DARK bottles regardless of age.
I'll second mike's thoughts. Though as Glendronach gets younger and I don't know the magic age/year, you'll no longer be getting distillate from their old coal fired stills and that *MIGHT* make the decision more in favor of risking it on Glenfarclas if you want that coal fired note. Time will tell there, though I believe mike and I have had a few even somewhat younger glendronach single casks and were fans.

I have passed so far, HP has been a bit disappointing lately.
Only 2 batches out so far…I’ve only tried #2 definitely more value and flavor than the special releases.
Is these two wines have more sherry taste than a 15 revival？🤔

Well, none. Not a real sherry guy. Even too much sherry in a peated scotch can ruin it for me like the sirupy Sanaig...if i had to pick one, i'd take Bunnahabhain XVIII...

The bigger sherry bottles I reach for on a more regular basis would be Glendronach 15 year and Glengoyne Cask Strength Batch 006. Cheers!

Glengoyne quality has really taken a hit. The new 21 is a joke. My favorite distillery and I'm pissed. It's Obvious they're using less quality casks right now and jacking up the price bc scotch is selling so good. New packaging sucks too.
I rather like the new boxes for the 25 and 30. The rest of the line's boxes look nice, but Ralfy nailed it on how wasteful the excessive packaging was, especially on the younger expressions. I've kinda given up on their 43% line and the CS batches were always a bit hot and messy for me. So I for better or worse have had very little of their new stuff. I do want to try some of those hand filled casks.
I need to try more of the new line but it’s not hard to imagine. This new 25 is still a very enjoyable whisky… seems so many distilleries are seeing a downward trend in regards to quality on their older bottles.
I'll stick with the old one 🙂
