As a veteran of two wars and 26 years of service, having been hated for my service and yet now thanked for it gives me a special appreciation. When I am thanked I choose never to take it personally but remember they are thanking all veterans through me. Regardless of your war or experience, you should appreciate their intent as many of us remember a time when it did not exist.

Thanks for your service! I was incredibly fortunate to be born 12 years after the Vietnam War ended, so I didn't witness the cruelty our service members wrongfully endured coming home. I only learned about it through the history books. It is mind-boggling to me as to the causes of this negativity aimed towards those who would selflessly put their lives on the line for our country, regardless of what opinion one has about any wars being fought. Nearly three decades worth of service, wow! That's incredible! As a civilian who has never served and can never serve, I believe it to be my duty to thank *all* American veterans for their service, for I cannot pay it back in kind. Thank you again!

The most special compliment I ever got for military service, happened while I was waiting for a bus with my duffle at the end a long 16-hour day going home. What topped it off was it embarrassed his mother to no end although she was very relieved that I took her child's enthusiasm so well. That kid made all the guff from basic to the end of my career worth it.

from my point of view as an Australian Veteran, civilians here don't go up to us (if identified as a Veteran or service member) and say thanks so honestly i would feel a bit lost for any words.
I have had the "have you killed people" question and for me the answer is both simple and comical.

Because here in Australia we don't have the patriotism compared to the USA. But on Anzac and Remembrance day that's when we all stop and think for everyone. People are just RUDE if they ask you "Have you killed someone?" or something like it. But otherwise, mate cheers for the service and crack a cold one you earned it even if u never were deployed.

58,000 of my fellow soldiers died in Nam. Working at the Hines VA, I have seen countless vets without arms and legs and in wheelchairs, and one with only half a body left. These are my heroes, and the heroes of this country. All vets are my heroes. I was lucky to return alive as soldiers were dying at 100 per week when I was in service. It took over 40 years before anyone expressed to me thanks for my service. I think these vets are young and it may take time before they realize that they are the only thing between us and evil in this world like North Korea, which is building nukes to be pointed at us, controlled by a crazy man.

I was in the Air Force for 5 years during the Vietnam era. A few years ago while working out in a gym during a lite conversation I made reference to an experience I had in the Air Force - a younger gym member shot out a "thank you for your service" - I immediately internally bristled. I tried to process why. My conclusion was that the tone and attitude was dismissive and had no relationship to my personal experience. I finally came up with a response I am now comfortable with. "Thank you - but there is no need to thank me - nobody shot at me and I gained much more from my time in the Air Force than I gave - but if you really care please help those veterans who need it and do what you need to do to make sure the VA is fully funded to take care of their needs. "

The one gentleman was correct when he said it makes no difference which branch you served in we are all military.
I am one of those people who has a hat that shows that I was in the military but I don't wear it all the time because I'm just a typical citizen. There are only three times per year when I always wear my hat. July 4th, memorial Day, and veterans Day. I know that the Vietnam veterans were not treated with respect when they came home from Vietnam. But those people are the same age as the Vietnam veterans, so when a younger person says thank you for your service I usually respond with thank you that's very kind. If you were born after 1975 then you were born after Vietnam ended, so you weren't even here yet to be disrespectful.

Kekistan Trollmeister - I apologize for my lack of clarity. There are those who cannot serve for real reasons. This is a different matter. When thanked, I ask, “Did you serve?” People are almost alway honest, and provide a reason for not serving. In a sense I served on behalf of those like you - those who would but cannot. This is a private matter that I do not talk about. To do so would be arrogance, and I also believe that it might be offensive to you. I tell you now out of humility, and ask forgiveness for the original offense. It is an honor to have served you, and for you. Thank you for helping to provide a nation where such service is possible.

Others, myself included, take care of the physical requirements - equipment setup, fiber runs, etc - then he goes to work. He has no equal.
Many like him and many, many others such as you can wear the uniform and serve. I do not understand why this is not so. Know that as a vet, I hold you in the same esteem as my military brethren. It is wrong to deny those who wish to serve the opportunity. Particularly in this age.

The young waitress asked if I had been in the military ( I was wearing an old faded Marine Corps t-shirt) and thanked me for my service. There wasn't much sincerity in her voice and I just replied with a simple "thank you" and went on with my meal. Later she came back and wanted to ask me something. I said okay and then she asked "Who is Pow Mia?" I was wearing a POW/MIA cap and this young woman in her mid 20's had no clue as to what it meant. She actually thought "Pow Mia" was a person. SMDH

Then check Vietnam, Korea and WW II. Also, please don't miss that certain National Guard Unit based in Bedford, VA that landed in the first wave on Dog Green sector of Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. Personally, I have had the privilege of being wounded both as active Army and Reserve.

I never usually say it when I see a soldier. But I'm definitely pro-military and support our troops. I just usually talk to them like I would talk to anyone else, polite and friendly but casual. It's one of those things you can't really explain, but I just intuitively feel like they don't want to hear it. Closest rationalization I could think of is that they want to return to somewhat of a state of normalcy and are just glad to be home again. But I never served in the military. And even if I did I wouldn't speak for everyone else who did.

For me as a person who served on active duty from 2013-2016 & is currently serving reserves since 2017; people thanking me for my service has always made me feel awkward for two reasons.
    1) I honestly don't know what to say. Some people say "thank you" but to me that's feels weird. Some people say "you're welcome" but that just sounds arrogant.
    2) a soldier who has never been in combat. I just get this feeling that most people who thanks us assume that we all put our life on the line. I remember the first time people thank me for my service; I was fresh out of AIT. And, I was thinking was I haven't done at the yet. It's just a little awkward.

Seems like this was a PR activity to get the general population off the hook, so “So thank you is really for them” , which makes the whole activity pretty disingenuous. My preference, is for there to be a National Service for everyone,, Maybe than people would be a little more hesitant to send their “Little Johnny” to war

When I heard the first comment that really broke my heart. I stopped the video and didn't listen to another word. A true veteran would never say that. They would just say thank you and be on their way. The first line the young man says is really disheartening. He should have grown up with the Vietnam vets. He would have charged his tune.

Most veterans are not the ones you see in commercials and news articles glorifying the military, they are not given the spotlight, but are shuffled around and avoided. That homeless guy with a "Veteran" sign, did you thank him? I bet you passed by and gave a look in disgust or tried avoiding eye contact.

The way I view it, even if he didn't mean it as a joke, he was brave enough to put on a uniform and do the things I never could. He experienced things I likely couldn't imagine, and there's every possibility that any disability due to him for PTSD, injuries suffered or exposure to materials known to cause things like cancer he has to fight for with the VA because of our government's buracracy.
He would know nothing about me, and might assume that I'm thanking him so I could feel good about myself. He wouldn't know that I'm the child of a Vietnam combat medic and because of how HE was treated, I am very sensitive to the fact that our serving men and women are so often and easily marginalized. Especially considering the fact many of today's veterans have had as many as 7, 8, 9 or more tours under their belt.

As a civilian, I say it stems from the fact that our troops did something that us civilians did not.
Y'all opted in to serve our country, whatever that may entail...
The USA wouldn't be what it is today, (and I'm not talking political BS, but a free country, which some people still don't understand), without the sacrifice that our troops give, and their forefathers, and those before...
Now, I don't go looking for soldiers/vets to say thank you...
But if they happen to mention their service, I will.

I don't say it. I think everyone that goes out, gets a job, pays taxes, yields right of way while driving, and is generally a decent human being is doing a service to the country. Most enlisted soldiers just follow orders. Sometimes doing so protects freedom and America's standing in the world. Sometimes doing so places an undue burden on the citizens of the countries in which the soldiers are fighting. Not knowing which orders the individual soldier followed, perhaps they followed both, it doesn't make sense, to me, to thank them. If I find out they saw combat in an unjust war, I sometimes want to say "I don't think we should have sent you guys over there," but it rarely comes up.
If I find out they've been back more recently, I might say "Welcome back" and ask how they're adjusting, but truth be told, that hasn't come up much either.
