Beaten by rice farmers and goat herding tribes with NO AIR FORCE, NO NAVY , NO SAT Comm... Participating in UNCONSTITUTIONAL BABY KILLING> Did you forget about that? We have LESS freedom since these Wall Street mercenaries have been "fighting for freedom" and nation building by destroying. The US involvement in the Nation Building has been a total WASTE. No existential national security threats. NINE undeclared UNCONSTITUTIONAL invasions the past 50 years. The US is 0-9 in these foolish nation building adventures. These are Wall St. invasions. Actually created the conditions for WWIII. The use of US military as "Nation Builders" is a complete FAILURE!

One of my younger cousins recently joined the Marines, and while I will always worry for his safety if he is ever deployed anywhere dangerous (I held him in my lap when he was a toddler, and him and his younger brother have always been close to me), I have tremendous respect for his decision to join the military as well. My step-grandfather (whom I consider my real grandfather, as far as my biological maternal grandfather goes he can rot in a ditch for all I care after he just up and walked out on my grandmother and mother. My step-grandfather always treated me like I was his own flesh and blood, I only wish I could remember more of him, as he passed away back in 1996 when I was only 8 years old....tragically his own mother outlived him by several decades) actually served in World War II, and he was about to be deployed overseas when the war ended.
I see myself as a bit of a coward, as I doubt I would ever have the guts to do anything potentially dangerous, as I'm very cautious by nature, but I will always have nothing but respect and gratitude for not just the military, but law enforcement, the fire department, and any other occupation where an everyday potential risk to their lives and well-being is just part of the job.

@sam singh That is not altogether true Sam. In my particular case, my parents were given care by my brother and I until the day they left this earth. My wife's parents as well. And in my wife's case she is disabled from a stroke. I have been her caregiver for the last 15 years. I had never at any time contemplated putting any of them in senior homes or rehab facilities. Was it due to respect? Yes, but love and duty to each other was taught to us from early on. It seems to me that only those with money offload those dependents on others. BTW, I served in the military 71-77.

I am an Australian Vietnam Veteran (Army) and I recently toured the USA and I wore my Vietnam Vets Cap. From the moment I left the aircraft I was amazed at the number of people, complete strangers that came up to me and either hugged me or shook my hand and said thank you for your service. There wasn't one day in the whole 4 weeks that someone didn't come up and say thanks. In Australia we have a lot to learn about those that served.

Arthur, I am a US Navy Vietnam Vet. I have lived in Australia for the past 20 years. I think it took the Twin Towers for Americans to appreciate their servicemen.
I was never thanked for my service until a visit back home after 911. Then I was thanked by friends who knew me before I enlisted, and were my friends afterward, but it was like they just wanted to forget the war and forget that many of us served. I have to tell you the first time someone (an old high school friend) thanked me and acknowledged my service, it hit me hard, but in a nice way.
Mind you, I had a hazardous job, under tough conditions, but I didn't have anyone shooting at me.

Although, as an Aussie, I know we don’t have that same patriotism that the US has, that doesn’t mean what you’ve done is any less appreciated. I’m sorry you feel that way but please know a “thankyou for your service” will never do you justice for what you’ve done. I wish I could do more than leave a comment and give thanks, but I truly hope you know exactly how thankful we all are for what you’ve done. Love from a regular young Aussie who feels forever indebted to you for your service. X

Your comment has intrigued me immensely. I’ve always been interested in the relationship between other servicemen(Americans/Europeans etc) and how they view/their relationship with Australian soldiers. Would you mind elaborating on why Australians were some of the toughest guys you’ve met? I don’t hear much about it and would LOVE to know how men view Australian soldiers. Participating in an undeclared UNCONSTITUTIONAL invasion and mass murder does NOT make someone a hero. It makes them a WAR CRIMINAL. ALL who participate in these evil actions are oath violators , traitors and cowards. They are also "Baby Killers" They were beaten by rice farmers and goat herding tribes who had NO Air force nor navy. They had their asses kicked by people defending their home.

@@davidconrad7218 there were soldiers who committed war crimes, but not all of them. And if u wanna blame for the participation, u blame the administration, not the soldiers. The soldiers didn't choose to go to war, it was the government. Not all murderers. Pls do some study before going around judging people, technically the North Vietnam won, but the US military didn't lose, it was a withdrawal due to major reasons. It was a political loss, but militarily, the Americans whooped the Vietnamese asses, US had 58,000 killed, the NV had more than a million killed, so who whooped who ass. Its obvious that American whooped their asses. But of course, u can continue to be a military hater, but by your comment, it just shows u are ignorant.

It was wrong that too many people who were against the war did not support the men who fought it. Your dad should have had a parade. I wanted to be a chopper pilot and was in Air force ROTC, but my eyesight wasn't good enough. I dropped out to let them draft me the 1st year of the lottery. I was 1 weeks worth of numbers from being drafted when Nixon came on TV at the end of August and said no more numbers would be taken. There went my GI Bill college. I went to work in a defense factory building mobile communications units for Nam and had a Secret clearance. I slowly turned against the war because of the rules of engagement. Our fighter planes couldn't take out a SAM site in the North because they might kill a Russian advisor. So the SAMs would shoot down our planes and the NVA would send the pilots to the Hanoi Hilton to be tortured. Our troops never lost a battle, but they were never allowed to win the war. I am proud of all of our warfighters and honor their service. It was the Generals and the politicians I despise. Astan proved they learned nothing.

I am a Vietnam ERA vet. One of the worst times I've had was when a Vietnam vet spotted my cap and asked me where I was at and I told him, I wasn't "in country". Before I could explain he gave me a look of outright disgust that I will never forget. I tried to explain to him that I had volunteered twice to go but my Army MOS prevented that and I was assigned to other areas to serve. He apparently didn't believe me and again gave me a look of utter contempt then walked away. I was crushed! I served for right at nine years (1964-1973), lost high school classmates and several buddies that I had served with. My cap that I wear says Vietnam ERA vet. I do NOT claim to know what my fellow vets endured during that time. Stories I have heard just make me hate and despise Clinton, Clay and the other draft dodgers more and more every day. While I did not serve "in country" I feel that I am a part of that era and proud that I was serving at that time. Did it hurt to have another vet look down on me like that vet did? You have no idea. I am so glad those young Marines did what they did. Vietnam vets got a very raw deal from this country and America can NEVER repay them for what they endured when they came home. We were told to NOT wear our uniforms home after we transitioned out of San Francisco because it was not safe. That sucked! America made heroes out of Hanoi Jane, John Kerry and John "Canary" McCain but spit and cursed men that did their duty? I wear my cap, not in honor of the America I came home to, but honor the men that served during that era.

I have no use for Vietnam veterans. First of all....many of them are arrogant and "self-noble" ....like you encountered. They do it all in the name of duty and a BS patriotism. It's neither here or there whether you served in Vietnam or not. ALL of you had no place in Vietnam and had no right to be there. If you would have ended up in Vietnam you would have been an invader and aggressor in someone else's country that did nothing to Americans or the USA. Your country didn't have the guts or integrity to declare war it sent 60000 Americans to die in. As one veteran told me, "you didn't miss anything".
It was the Vietnam veterans who made Vietnam possible and a national disgrace. You should be grateful you weren't directly involved in it. You need to respect the Draft "dodgers" and protesters a lot more than you do. I am a proud Vietnam/Draft resistor. I didn't "dodge" a damn thing. A real man stands up to his Government when it was wrong. Vietnam veterans were either ignorant and/or cowardly going to Vietnam. The only good part of your comment is you didn't end up in Vietnam.
Vietnam veterans aren't heroes or someone's victim. They are nothing more than survivors of an American disgrace and are most fortunate they weren't sent home in a box. And yet they piss, moan and groan about how they were received back home.
Btw...you appeared to be way too accommodating to that clown veteran who dissed you. Too bad he didn't face me instead. I would have defended you more than you did for yourself.

Not because I'm not proud of serving my country but because so many made the ultimate sacrifice I feel I'm not worthy of any praise I get from others. I live in a town where we have young men and women deploying to Afghanistan on a regular basis and I know any of them may not come home. Every time I see them in a restaurant I pick up their tab and ask the waitress to please not tell them who paid for their meal. I love our young men and women serving our country because today's generation doesn't really care or think about our history and those who gave all so they could be free.

      Martin,
Like you, I do not like to overshadow those who you and I might call "Real Vets." Like you, I know how lucky we are that we came home.
      But...
Several years after my 8 years in the Navy as an enlisted-man, I became a professional pilot. The chief pilot at one company I worked for was an F-4 Navy Aviator during the Vietnam War. Over there, he was hit and ejected over water, landed in the drink, and was picked up.
That mild mannered, retired Lt. Commander said to me:
"You volunteered. I didn't; I was drafted. You chose to serve, I didn't. You CHOSE to serve. So tell me, which one of us is more deserving of recognition?"
I still make every effort not to overshadow those who gave the ultimate sacrifice as well as those who come home to a prostheses.
But quietly, in my heart, I remember that old Phantom pilot who saluted me, and I pop tall and return his salute.

I was young when the Vietnam War ended but I remember that the soldiers returning from that war were not treated very well by people at that time. These were men who did their duty and did what their country and their government asked them to do. Like all soldiers who go to war they gave up a lot, watched their buddies get injured or die and endured horrific events. They did no less than soldiers from any other war and yet the people of this country, at that time, treated them poorly. It is so nice to see soldiers of that war getting the respect they should have gotten from Americans, at that time. You can hate war all you want, but respect the soldiers.

I know this video is a few years old but I just caught it today. No one deserves recognition more than our Viet Nam vets, many of whom were treated horribly when they returned home, and undeservedly so. I remember many years ago (probably early-mid 80s) at a July 4 parade in Newport, RI, a contingent of Viet Nam vets were marching together and while many viewers remained silent, quite a few cheered, clapped, and loudly showed their appreciation. I watched as many of those men began to tear-up at the crowd's reaction. I'll never forget that day and I think it was a turning point when we as a country began appreciating our men and women in service once again.

northerntraveler, I am an Air Force Vietnam Veteran. You need to go back to school to relearn your history. The draft of WWII lasted until it was replaced by the lottery system in 1969. Even then, it was still a system of conscription. This was a two-step lottery. First, the birth date was drawn to assign a number and then a second draw was done to use initials to select from each previously drawn birth date. This system was later modified so that the first draw was by birth date but the second assigned the actual lottery number to that date. The all volunteer military did not start until 1973.
Until the all volunteer system began we had four choices.: join the service to pick the military branch you served in, go to Canada (the law said you could not come back at that time), go to jail (great admiration for the people who did that, they stood up against the system), get drafted and (probably) wind up beating the bush in Vietnam.
One more thing to remember is that FDR had lowered the draft age to 18 during WW2 and yet the age to vote was 21. Result? We could not vote to change the system but we could sure be forced to go die for it.

Lou, Sir, veterans occupy a large space in my heart and while i respect all veterans, Vietnam vets stand in my mind because i was a child during that time and the way people treated them was more than shameful. it has been my practice to not only shake their hands and thank them for their service, but to extend a hearty welcome home. God bless you, whether you were drafted or enlisted you went there so that i never had to. i'm eternally grateful.
