As an Iraq and Afghanistan vet I can honestly say that "Thank You for Your Service" gets it right and it definitely hits you in the feels.
One would think that having lived this exact story (all the way down to the VA being worthless), I'd be happy to see it in a film.
Sadly, it only hurts. But I do appreciate it for its educational value.
HitchensImmortal I am in agreement.even when I was in basic I have experienced other soldiers attempt suicide.i have had two of my friends die on me while I was in.when I got out I agree with that the VA needs to be either abolished or overhauled completely.its completely unnecessary to have 22 veterans die from suicide daily when they need help.i personally haven't gone to that extreme about contemplating suicide.
I do want to say that to all veterans out there,your life matters,you can draw from your experience to help others cuz like when you're down range that's all you have is your squad

So glad he professed outrage at her not seeing The Best Years of Our Lives - that movie is beautifully timeless and so truthful. It should be requied viiewing for everyone, let alone a film critic!
Alonso's offscreen "What!?" was the greatest moment in What the Flick history. XD
I did not think it was a bad film, but the issue I have is that the mission example they used in the film is honestly not even the worst event that happens on those deployments. And some of the interactions with the officers where kind of far fetched but I did enjoy the characters and the acting was actually really decent.
In perspective, I hate most of these types of films like Hurt Locker and Home of the Brave, which both suck badly, this one was watchable.
I have been struggling with my mental health. When i saw the soldiers have no one to really be able to rely upon or understand but each other it reminded me how alone i feel about this pain. I have people i can talk to but this feeling feels like my cross to bare and i feel so alone. That fear they had at the end of being alone, i feel that everyday. Im sad and scared.
Where's the review for Marshall? That movie was great, I'd love to hear the WTF crew's opinions on it.
This movie is by far the best explanation of what actual PTSD is and what vets go through when they come back home.
Thank you Alonso when Christy said they been making movies about soldiers coming home and blanked for a moment I kept think there was a classic War World two movie on the subject but I wasn't sure of the name of it. Thankfully he shouted it out off screen near the end or it would have driven me nuts. It's the best years of our lives.

How did you feel the film compared to American Sniper in terms of propaganda? Did it have a political motive or was it an honest portrayal of Soldiers & why we should take care of our vets better than we do?
Laugh Track I can't speak for the WTF presenters, but I didn't get much of a propaganda vibe from this one, especially compared to American Sniper. The characters and PTSD portrayal were real and moving, but it wasn't preachy, like Matt said. It didn't ever touch on whether or not the Iraq war itself was justified.
American Sniper was a typical American gun wank, having read the book, they completely glossed over the fact that Chris Kyle was a lunatic, and portrayed him as some kind of hero. It's a propaganda film.
This film doesn't portray the conflict in the same light, it shows the damage that it does it families, and the lack of support troops are often greeted with when they're used up by the war machine. They have a completely different tone from each other.

I'm a Marine infantry combat vet. I got out at the same time as this movie is set. This movie is garbage. Unless it's a comedy. Then It's Awesome lol. Critics need to quit talking about The Hurt Locker. It's also garbage. Dead Presidents was good though.

One downside of doing the numbers first, people might see immediately whether the film is any good and click out if it isn't. Good for us. Bad for you.

not a war movie, there's very little war. it's more of a seeking for recovery movie about ptsd.

This movie definitely wasn’t anything great but I thought it was pretty good, I think what sets it below other movies about the military is that other than the whole PTSD thing it’s not really about anything, like it has a premise but it doesn’t really have a *plot* if that makes any sense, you’re really just kinda watching a series of scenes one after another of these guys going through their lives after they get back from the war, that’s why I prefer military movies like Hacksaw Ridge or Saving Private Ryan over stuff like this or The Hurt Locker, because Thank You For Your Service and The Hurt Locker don’t really feel like they have as much meat as the other 2, what really carries this movie is engaging acting, particularly from Miles Teller, the character interactions are really where the heart and soul of this movie lies, it’s definitely not as good as a lot of other recent military related movies but I still think it’s a decent one

this is a standard film that tries to be real instead of pandering propaganda. i will say that it does a middle of the road job at presenting ptsd and what it was going for. maybe that has to do with the fact that this is the director's first film. think the movie could've been longer and spent more time developing the internal issues theyy have with ptsd, but we didn't really get that. we get glimpses of what ptsd does and one specific scene was just poorly executed. almost to laughable territory, but because the scene was meant to be taken seriously, it held it back from being laughable. oh and Amy Schumer was a poor choice, bad casting there.
*Those people have willingly participated in an illegal war of aggression,* the capital crime that is exists in the world, so I have way harder time sympathiesising with them comparing to, say, if the story would have been moved to the times of the WWII, where the participation in the war was not quite voluntary, and the war has had actual dignity about it at least in terms of goals. (The Vietnam war would not work either due to it being an illegal war of aggression, too, but the participation in that war was not voluntary.)
Jesus, your lack of distinction between soldiers on the ground serving their country and the people in power with God complexes using them, (and the people in the countries they invade), as pawns is bordering on pathological ignorance. Of course the soldiers deserve our support and recognition - it is those in power who deserve our derision, and to conflate the two is to either have no ability for nuance or to have such a malevolent hatred for America in general that you cannot afford it's people any amount of distinction as moral or good, for that would be incompatible with your view of America as an evil supremacist nation.
The US government (both Dems and Reps) have made horrific choices in regards to foreign policy. Neo-cons and neo-liberals like Cheney and H. Clinton have wreaked havoc worldwide because they are corrupted by power and do not see people as having inherent dignity, but as pawns in their own game - to conflate these atrocious motivations and the actions that result from them with the ordinary men and women who sacrifice their lives and sanity to serve their nation is despicable.
Tell me again how e.g. murderous mobsters should be excused because they only carried out the orders of their bosses. There is no dignity in voluntary obeying illegal criminal orders. Of course, those in power are primary culprits, but it does not alleviate the crimes of those who willfully committed them directly.
