In this clip, Damion Hall revealed to Shawn Prez that despite Guy's immense popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s, he nor Aaron touched a million dollars during that time. He talked about the group's accomplishments and posited a theory of what he thinks ultimately led to their demise.

1988 - 1990 is arguably the best 2 year span of music ever. I always liked Guy! more than Blackstreet too.
True! 💯 Even in other genres. I think Guns and Roses’ “Appetite for Destruction” album was one of the best albums of rock, and it was released during that time.
Guy and blackstreet is two different type of groups
Guy was fully New Jack Swing while BlackStreet is 90's R&B - you cannot really compare those two, especially since BlackStreet had too many group member changes. Their 1st album reigns supreme though.
@@rikkidgermano9640 yeah that first blackstreet album was between the ending of new jack swing and it had r&b Ballards also

Bottom line, the record company appeased them with short term advances of trinkets, cars, clothes and money in exchange for long term sound recording royalties.

Until we appreciate our spending power we will always be short a million.
We are the biggest consumers of swag out here. We don't shop-- we shut down the city.
And the artist LOVED it! They only cry when they broke

It may sound like Damion is bragging, but everything he's saying is TRUE in terms of Guy's perception.
Prince was like that in the late 80s and 90s. Wanting to sell his records directly. That’s why he changed his name to a symbol.

That First Guy Album was EVERYTHING
And this is a part of why the music industry no longer exist as it once did, people found out how greedy and shady the industry was and also found out that they could go independant and make just as much if not more than signing with a label, then the technology caught up and allowed us to do things the labels charged an arm and a leg for on our own. Now people don't have to pay $100 an hour and up to record a song, you can record yourself on your laptop or even your phone if you know what you're doing. No one cares about major labels anyone.

GUY... one of the greatest, most promising and most heartbreaking moments in R&B bands. We lost so much music from them. If they could had only worked things out, we would have like 10 albums of great music. Now I get that it may mean we don't get Rump Shaker which added to hiphop in so many ways (wow if that aint a top notch summer jam! Summer Time is next to it) and we may not have gotten Blackstreet, but that's fine because they broke up anyway. Can you imagine Damian singing Before I Let You Go?
And let’s not talk about how much we loved to watch the Guy videos back in the day AND today!

The thing about the industry is most often you are HOT for 2-3 years. I was around 18 during this time and Guy definitely was the go to music when you trying to get some and before them was Keith Sweat. Guy took over the clubs, New Jack City came out and Guy was in it which just elevated their status. New Edition was falling off at this time and BBD was about to drop. When your manager owns the production company that your contracted to he can fire you the artist that was the real problem with Guy, Gene owned the name group's name Guy with an LLC and had the guys in the group sign a 'slave contract' giving him most of their royalties, publishing and charging them a manager's fee of 20% from the group's earning
You just told us more than he did in 17 minutes lol
Timmy Gatling the 3rd original Guy member saw through Gene's scheme to make the guys in the group sign over almost all of there royalties and publishing to him and that's why Timmy got fired by Gene because the other group members had signed to his production company and he owned the name "Guy" he had the LLC but Timmy didn't over his royalties are publishing and got the bag.
