    Part 18: • Teddy Riley: Michael J...
Part 16: • Teddy Riley on Michael...
Part 1: • Teddy Riley on Growing...
    --------
In this clip, Teddy Riley talked about life after Guy disbanded and the moves he had to make next. He recounted working with Michael Jackson and how Clarence Avant was instrumental in getting him his deal with MCA. Teddy also recalled feeling like a hustler after getting booked to work on different tracks for various artists and making a lot of money in the process. At one point, he remembered jumping on the bed like a little kid after securing $100K between a track for Keith Sweat and another remix.

From Quincy Jones own mouth this is what he said regarding the end of his production on Michael Jackson-"I absolutely loved working with Michael and all the incredible music we created together, however,I was getting older and had numerous projects of my own on the board, and could no longer afford to take 4 or 5 years to spend in the studio solely on Michael." That's it ,no drama,no bullshit, end of story. Quincy wished Michael well, regardless of bullshit that people think or say about him ,they both moved on and that was that.

Idk about that…he released a new album once every few years in the 80s & 90s…so while mike was a perfectionist…he wasn’t as bad as say…Dr Dre who maybe makes a new album once every ten years because he’s so anal about the process…mike was a machine if you think about it…I’ve heard both he and Prince have hundreds of unpublished songs in the vault.

Since Teddy Riley was unclear in his answer, here’s the “Cliff Notes” version of what happened:
    - Michael and his B-Team of producers started working on ‘Bad’ in January 1985. Quincy was working on other projects at the time such as ‘The Color Purple.’
    - When Quincy joined the ‘Bad’ sessions in July 1986, most of the album was done. Q and MJ clashed over creative differences. Q wanted more live instrumentation like ‘Off the Wall’ and ‘Thriller’; MJ wanted to use sounds the human ear hadn’t heard before.
    - While Michael admired Quincy as a mentor/father figure, he knew ‘Bad’ would be their last album together. They fulfilled their contractual obligations plus MJ grew tired of critics saying (1) he abandoned his black roots, and (2) Quincy was the reason for his success.
    - MJ recruited Teddy Riley for ‘Dangerous’ in early 1990. And before MJ gave ‘Dangerous’ to Epic/Sony, he sent the album to Quincy for his feedback. Q called it a “masterpiece.”

Fun Fact: Michael had heard "We Can Spend The Night", a track included on Guy's eponymous debut project (1988) and loved it; therefore, he became interested in working with Teddy and wanting that sound (New Jack Swing) on his next project. This was another factor that played a role in their partnership reaching its dissolution. Next, Michael and Teddy team up, release DANGEROUS (1991), and the rest is history. REMEMBER THE TIME, for me, is Michael’s most jamming song, and I feel the credit goes to this man, Mr. Teddy Riley 😊. My favorite Michael song is “Lady In My Life”, and for that one, the credit goes to “The Q”. Thank you, Teddy, for some of my favorite music; all of your work with GUY alone makes you a legend! Your influence in R&B is nearly unrivaled ❤️.

Quincy Jones was more in a executive producer mode than spending time...actually composing...you have to remember that Quincy Jones was working with A&M Records, he had his Qwest label to supervise, he had Patti Austin, Siedah Garrett, James Ingram, and other artists under his wing with Tevin Campbell being a teenager with the potential to have the successful career Micheal had as a solo artist...at a even younger age...people also need to remember that MJ was signed to Epic before Sony entered the picture and he had his own management team after Joe Jackson was pushed out...MJ had released a couple of solo albums before Quincy Jones entered the picture...Micheal was co-writing and co-producing songs ...trying to stay current and not being left behind ...he was about to launch MJJ Records with Quo, 3T, Brownstone, Floetry, and others...MJ hired Teddy to give him a updated sound !

Michael was pissed that Quincy was stealing production credits on songs he’d already produced in his own home studio. Michael also didn’t like the media narrative of Quincy making him a star & he also believed that Quincy’s sound was dated, so he wanted to incorporate more New Jack Swing & Hip Hop into his sound.
People around Michael have said that Michael never informed Quincy of a split & started working on Dangerous without Quincy. Michael actually worked on the the album with Babyface & LA Reid (which pissed off his brother Jermaine) before he chose Teddy.

Never knew Teddy Produced Jane Child’s “I Don’t Want To Fall In Love”. Song had strong R&B Feel and was Crazy Nice. Make sense now.
Got a homeboy that was big on that song when it came out. He’s currently got 3 Years left on a 25 Year Bid.
To this day I play that Song in his Honor✊🏽✅. See Ya Soon Rob “O”✨

Micheal became my best friend
