  • When you are fishing from the beach or rocks, you may need a rod rest. Graeme shows you how to save a bit of money and make your own fishing rod rest on the cheap. The first rod rest he makes is more of a rod holder for surf/beach fishing. The second one is a tripod type beach rest that is more suited to rock fishing but can be used to equal affect when beach fishing. I'm 44 and have not sea fished since I was about 15,,,, thank you for these videos, watched loads lately to get up to speed so that I can take my kids fishing and have loved all these TA videos , a wealth of knowledge that will make me look like the best dad in the world, thank you,,,

      Same story for me. I'm 60 and have not sea fished since I was about 15 as well. I grew up by the Thames and moved inland for work. I could never afford any decent fishing gear when growing up, now I have money and have returned to the Thames area, but refuse to pay £60 for a rod rest!!!! Great videos indeed. (Never grow up by a river, no matter where you go it will never leave you, ask any salmon!! )

    Hi Graeme, great video as always.
    When you make the hole for the reel foot in the rod holder.
    Use a drill of suitable size and then cut out the straight pieces with the saw for a nicer result and less sanding.

    I still have my bi-pod rest that I made about 40 years ago in the back of the car. Two four foot lengths of 1" x 3/4" pine, one bolt, two washers and a wing nut. Varnished and with my name and a fish species measure etched on in ballpoint. I never got around to adding a third leg. Vintage.

    There's another way of spiking the end too, heat the first six or eight inches of the tube with a heat gun and when it goes soft squeeze the end tightly with the vice! { This softened end will be hot enough to burn you so be careful }, when it's cool just saw a point shape and Bob's your uncle! I used this method when I made my rabbit drop net poles for my longnets! I'm an old guy too, but still know a trick or two! I love you and your boy, Graeme, in a very manly and brotherly sort of way I hasten to add :-D and totally lap up your vids whenever I can. I used to enjoy my fishing and rabbit catching, but hung up my nets when my wife became ill several years back and needed a lot more looking after! I have a rabbit drop trap up at the local allotments and I'm never short of a bunny or two in the freezer! I still night fish locally on the odd occasion when my granddaughter stays over! Some lady asked me once if there were any fish about around the entrance of Brighton Marina? I said 'oh yes, in fact only the other day I saw a dogfish chasing a catfish around the marina entrance'!

    Great video. Just a thought but if you start the notch by drilling a hole the minimum size for the reel and then cut it so that it gradually widens towards the end so that it will accommodate a larger reel then you will eliminate any rotation as the rod will settle until the reel is snug. Hope that makes sense.

    You could use a grinder with a cutting disc. Had a big smooth hound dog fish on Hythe Kent beach. Nearly lost my rod pulled it straight out the rod rest. Not bad for the first ever fish I have caught. 😊

    Why don't you attach the third leg of the tripod to the pivot bolt in the middle which would help with stability.

    Good for sand beach. I simply bend up a piece of 1/2" rebar, and I'm done. You can pound rebar into hard dirt .

    little tip, when doing the notch drill a hole the same size as the width your going to cut and then cut down to it so it gives you a U shape if you know what i mean ;)
    Keep up the great work guys

      +Shane Wickham You are right there,as I hate the cold,wet,windy,icy,sleet driven,water freezing,nut cracking, hail smacked, frost bitten,snow bound , road jammed,fog bound ,miserable freaking British winter weather. I mean....what is it for ? What's the point of it ? So I hibernate in the garage and workshop between fishing trips ,trying to stay sane. Yeah...well... that's obviously not working...but still good fun.

    is there much difference between a carp rod and your beach rod?
    im not from the uk, could someone explain this please?

    • @larsagi2008
      @larsagi2008 8 років тому

      Beach rods tend to be firmer. Sometimes longer, also they withstand salt better than a freshwater rod

      +Daniel Callaghan thanks dan.
      i live in aus and i do alot of pier fishing, in rough weather like 30-40 knots fishing for a fish we call snapper. and im looking to get a setup that will cast 5ounce comfortably (usually 3-4 ounce)
      but the Australian market has very little options for a fairly cheap price
      but it looks like the english market has a few options :)

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  8 років тому

      +jacob green Beach/surf rods are much stronger than carp rods as they have to cast leads up to 7 ounces. Carp rods cast up to 3 ounces as an average.
