Great video ! Fishing for mackerel with a single hook and light gear is my favourite type of fishing & agree totally with your comments about releasing fish .
spot on mike, watched this video and then put it to practice, used a small 10gram dexter wedge on a dropshot rod paired with a nomura kuro, took them down to falmouth and fished from the point far side of swan pool, what a great days fishing, mackerel after mackerel even a good size wrasse jigging about a foot off the rock in a deep pocket. thanks to you and your dad, its watching these your videos that made me get my gear back out back of garage, and now me and my son fish all the time, with him being 17 now its great to find something we can both do together
Great video Mike, people are right about the trawlers & mackerel, i remember fishing in Cornwall when i was on holiday in Tintagle, catching dozens of fish with my parents with hand lines, now i live in New Zealand where the fishing is fantastic,( now i also have a 30ft boat) been here since 1975, but have trips home often, still have family in Essex, will be back for 8 weeks end of May 2019 but wont be fishing which is sad, wife wants to sight see Europe, all the best keep vids comming
great video mate. policy forget that fish don't usually ever experience out of water gravity and that any slight drop could damage them. I eat most I catch as much as poss but if returning I try to induce the least amount of stress on the animal as I can. respect the animals for what they provide. keep it up! :)
going to give it a try next week in cornwall. Totaly agree about not unhooking high. Have seen a lot of vids where they just drop them onto the rocks high up which i think is really bad.
Meister Mouse not so much for fishing as while we can increase fish stocks i think we may have some issues trying to artificially lower the sea temperature
Superb videos guys ... brilliant to see a father and son with common interest .. id like to have same with my dad .. but at 92 hes just a tad too old .. lol .. tight lines guys .. George :)
good video. your explanation for retrieve and jigging was the kind of explanation I was looking for on the drop shotting and fishing for pike with lures videos.
Quick release of the fish is a must, better going back with a chance of survival than getting binned because nobody wants them or left in a freezer for months then getting chucked, if you arent going to eat it dont kill it, great videos guys and nice to see your girlfriend enjoying it ;-)
I'm watching these videos as I am thinking if taking up sea fishing again. I'm from Houghton le spring so not far from shields. I here the council often close roker pier during mackerel season.
+Steves Outdoors NE that was 2014 for repairs and now roker is open always except for bad weather and shields is open edxept for bad weather and night but you can climb around still but like i say some great fishing off the top for mackerel, pollock and flatties in the summer months
+Tyler Robb Roker pier was featured on Countryfile the other night..I see they are planning to open up the tunnel and do tours. Bet that's a great reason for the council to close it to the public. They won't want people who are paying for a tour to face chaos pissing all over the lighthouse. But like anything its the behaviour of the minority that causes problems for the rest.
Great vid Mike I've realy turned to sea fishing in last couple of years so that was a Wednesday night bonus. Also dropshotting and jigging addict in last couple of years. Hint hint lool
Keep the good work up Mike! Great tips & video. One day you may reach the dizzy heights of your old man! Seriously though mate, you're getting there fast (only 'cos I've been reading articles & books your Dad has written for donkey's years long before the internet). Cheers mate & tight lines.
honestly thank you for the tips pal I bought the same lures but only the 12g baitfish was available and 10g tronix wedge and I honestly had a great day out today had a good few school bass off the baitfish and caught my first garfish on the wedge :) just want to say thank you :)
Im proper hooked on spinning/jigs now iv actually never caught anything of spinners/jigs before and now i have im hooked like a kipper lol have you ever used a mepps black fury number 2 in bright aluminus yellow before iv ordered one of them now for brown trout can't wait to get back out there again :) Barry
Hi Mike....those jigs your using are vertical shore jigs....and the reason they come with one hook is because they are for vertical fishing and the hook is near the head....what i am saying is that your meant to fish it the other way around than you fished it! :) but yeah they worked the other way around as well! Thanks HTO for making them. Great videos... please keep them up I enjoy they a lot!
I heard if the scales come of mackerel and u return them or if you touch a mackerel with dry hands and return them they will die with in 36 hours. Thats what i heard. Love the vids👍👍
Mike just learn from the master "rusty"! When it comes to returning lob them in a bowl/ grenade pattern! Really agree, you try to always get it right, In favor of barbless hooks, even shark hunting, Cheers
Excellent video... I am new to lure fishing and the 3-5 second wait then jiging in the retrieve technique will be tried ... I wonder if the mackerel here in Perth Australia are the same as UK's
+1 on the releasing aspect... too many pansies these days think its absolutely necessary to use a wet rag, make love to the fish, then revive it before releasing. I personally just throw them back like you do and havent had a single fish die on me.
Another great vid Mike thanks, great venue and all the tips you need. I've done all types of Fishing inland but never done any sea fishing either on shore or boat. Do you need a particular fishing licence for sea fishing ? look forward to the next vid stay safe.
Hey Mike, What size jig are you using? I think you are using these ones: www.tronixfishing.com/product/hto/hto-metal-lures/hto-shore-jig/ The website doesn't really say the length of the lure. I like the size of the one in your hand at 10:38, can you please tell me the weight of it? Thanks.
Good video and in your dads footsteps, informative and approaching aspects that create interest and communication between others and there’s nothing wrong with that, dipped into your magazine the other evening, very good and helpful, well done for the putting in the time, I personally would pay a quid as a contribution towards costs, I don’t know if you can arrange it, but I have and do click on articles etc and by choosing the arrow on the top right of screen am able to choose place into iBooks, I couldn’t do it with the magazine but think it would be a good aspect if you could. I don’t know if you have heard of Readly I subscribe to it and the only fishing magazine on that is Anglers ? I think you would get quite a following, don’t know why your Dad haven’t put a book together he has the knowledge. Anyway brilliant work with a nice genuine delivery. Cheers DG New Forest
Light line fishing has to be the best way to catch mackerel, especially with single hook lures/spinners rather than these strings of feathers lobbed out with a 6oz weight from a 14 foot beach caster. Some good points made about releasing fish alive too. Nice one!
Even a 10-35 may be too heavy for Pollick and Mackerel. Personally I would use a 10-25 with 8lb mono straight onto a 10g Toby. Light and fun. Just be careful with the tide and rocks as it can be dangerous.
Awesome stuff ! love the show btw ! i have a question grant I'm fairly new to stripe bass fishing and i live near a river that has a pretty swift current what would be some sound advice such as lures or would chunk baits be better ? thanks in advance :)
Hi Barrie, I see no reason why you can't use single hook lures. All depends on fishery rules wherever you are fishing. Many people prefer to fish with single hooks
Hi ,,I am a bit of a beginner,,,do you do videos that show you how to tackle up, hooks to use etc..I am interersted in fishing of rocks inFalmouth,, best be a float I think,,any helpful videos for me please ?,,thank you Angela
Yes you can just tie the jig straight to your mainline. However my mainline is braid, braid is not abrasion resistant on the rocks. So I have about a metre of fluorocarbon which is tied to the braid with either the albright knot or a swivel. Mike
Thanks Mike mine is just the old school cheap line I think it's a 10lb line I think I will try a meter on a swivel next time give it some more movement in the water cross fingers more bites and tight lines lol cheers Mike
i shall add yet again ,, handling a fish with dry hands does very very little damage , if any at all , as i handle my koi carp weekly , they don t seem to mind it and over the years we have suffered from very very few fungal issues , .even in my OVER-CROWDED PONDS
Thank you I'm in the US we don't have same names I'm assumings silver, like the lure at an angel we call the kassmaster. /______/ you had a diffrent name for it spinners ever try mepps silver for mackerel?
u can catch mackeral on anything. iv caught them just on a bare hook before. ur best using them on a trace with 4 or 5 hooks. u get like 5 at a time, they put up a fare fight when theres that many lol

My Mother has studied White and Green Sturgeon for 30 years, Columbia River system up to, and including, the Snake River (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, USA). Predator/prey (juvenile salmonids and prey species..endemic and invasive) studies in the Columbia and Willamette Rivers for another 5 or 6. Don't handle fish any more than absolutely needed. Use a net, not some shitty nylon one with knots, get a nice smooth flat-bottom rubberized net. Keep them in the water. Never handle with dry hands (no burns, just fungal issues due to removal of slime coating). Don't squeeze fish. Don't hold them out of the water for pretty pics for more than a few seconds (something you and yer Dad do, think about it). Also, use gear that doesn't tire the fish out completely. Stiffer terminal tackle and heavier lines aren't as much fun, but don't force the fish to use all its reserves. Use single hooks, preferably barbless (I avoid barbless where legal.....just sayin. Saiwash and other single hooks really work better anyway). Bait is bad, fish take it deep. Fish bait if you intend to eat it (the fish, not the bait). If releasing a deep-hooked fish, just cut the line at the mouth. Hook will rot out or cyst over. Hooks are dirt cheap, life is more valuable, even for a fish.

going to give it a try next week in cornwall. Totaly agree about not unhooking high. Have seen a lot of vids where they just drop them onto the rocks high up which i think is really bad.
Another Totally Awesome Video! Well Done guys!!
Fun stuff!
Good tips il try some spinnfishing for them this year but still i enjoy the angling better for mackerel just to see the float dive :)
Very insightful, mackerel fishing in cork has gotten worse and worse, those Icelandic trawlers are depleting the huge shoals.
True, it's a shame, once upon a time the sea in the summer was almost overflowing with mackerel but now it's only the odd few.
+Meister Mouse I heard that mackerel stocks are actually booming but due to water temperature changes they've moved further north
+Kieran Clark That's good news!
Meister Mouse not so much for fishing as while we can increase fish stocks i think we may have some issues trying to artificially lower the sea temperature
2018 was the worst I've seen in cork harbor for mackerel since the 80s. Hardly any of them.

Great one Mike, good explanation on catch and release.
great video mate i will try this out next weekend as my dad lives near a beach i will give it a little go see if i can pull out anything , cheers
Looks like a right lark. I'm hoping to do similar in cornwall, around may time.
+arcanekrusader I never seem to catch much in the sea, mind you!
I fish with a rock fishing rod and 10 gr jigs , a more fantasiastic retrieve with various types off rod movement and have awesome results

I know this it late but you could use it as bait also which mackerel are commonly used for
yes of course as long as its a legal fish u can use it for whatever u want
I catch Mack’s for the soul purpose to freeze then and use them as striper fishing bait they love Mackerel
Love the knowledge this channel drop!
What a place to fish, looks beautiful there.

So show some of the jigs & spinners you use for mackerel.
You can use near enough anything I put an inside out part of a crisp packet on a hook and caught
if people are worried about touching fish ,then use a small landing net and unhook them in that
Try Achill island some day lads if you want a challenge.. big Irish records have a go..
the thing i like about mackerel is the skin pattern they have

you just hooked another subscriber thanks for the tips
Great Video. Do you use a shock leader at all?
I’m new to mackerel fishing, how can I find out when to catch mackerel in Scottish waters? What time of year? Or are they there all the time?
Ask your local tackle shop.I would have thought summer and autumn the best time, assuming they come into the area you are thinking of fishing.

hey guys brilliant video what cameras do u use for recording?
thanks for replying,,,very grateful
Great vid could you tell me some tips on carp fishing please 😃🎣
Sorry for the newbie question, but are these weighted and act as your bomb weight to cast
Most lures are weighted and come in different sizes for casting further,or fishing deeper water.
tell me Mike can you use those small single hook lures for fresh water fishing jiging. regards barrie
Hi Barrie, I see no reason why you can't use single hook lures. All depends on fishery rules wherever you are fishing. Many people prefer to fish with single hooks

quick question do you use a swivel at all on the line or do you use line straight to the jig thanks Mike
No worries! Good luck!
It's v.good for casting
Are there any good places in the south of England to catch mackerel
have you ever fished in north devon?
Looks a lovely spot, is it a secret fishing place?, if not where is it please
I may have that Jig was it made by Jackal Outdoors
what is your mackerel limit? here in bc it is 200 per person.

i shall add yet again ,, handling a fish with dry hands does very very little damage , if any at all , as i handle my koi carp weekly , they don t seem to mind it and over the years we have suffered from very very few fungal issues , .even in my OVER-CROWDED PONDS
tried cut anchovies nothing but once i put mackerel on the hook kept catching them
really nice video, but we in the netherlands have not that kind of conditions:((
mackrel fishing in Holland sucks last years
Hi Mike, do you use a leader for mackerel?
Hi, when I am using the reel with braid on yes I use about a 4ft fluorocarbon leader
Thanks again Mike👍
Thank you I'm in the US we don't have same names I'm assumings silver, like the lure at an angel we call the kassmaster. /______/ you had a diffrent name for it spinners ever try mepps silver for mackerel?
u can catch mackeral on anything. iv caught them just on a bare hook before. ur best using them on a trace with 4 or 5 hooks. u get like 5 at a time, they put up a fare fight when theres that many lol
was the seabed rocky or sandy? thanks
It would have been rocky because pollack only live on a rocky/weedy seabed
This video was published on the 16th of Dec is this when you were fishing or?
No filmed in late August
Did you use any lead while you were using the jig ?
No just used the weight of the jig which I think was 7grams
TAFishing thanks Mike

Yep you can use jigs with soft plastic lures (keep them small, around 2-4 cm long)

It will be difficult to cast 4g in windy conditions, on a flat day you should be ok. That will work fine for vertical jigging - Mike
