Hello...John and family...Thank you for your informative videos...they are absolute fun to watch...may you and your family always be blessed with the best.
UA-cam is the only social media I do, The others are becoming too controversial. You youtubers with your informational channels and old movies and TV shows are the only reason I’ve stayed this long. You are worth it many times over.👍
rare to find people that share like this. Where I lived one time in my life (Washington State USA) I LOVED people going golfing... less competition fishing! Hawaii on the other hand is one of the FREEEST (is that a word?) places on earth NO fishing license needed. You buy a boat, a fishing pole you catch a marlin, tuna, Mahi Mahi menpachi Ono, etc etc what a wonderful place, with people who LOVE YOU! Just be NORMAL, okay? you have a small boat, they have a small boat. Yo have a beer they have a beer. It is LIFE that is fishing. Thank YOU!
A big well done and thankyou for the rate at which you create this content. It's easy for us to take for granted the amount of work that goes into filming and editing a video every week! Genuinely impressive and so welcomed by us all. Thankyou !!
I use a Penn 525 multiplier- I have an old century rod which I stripped down and put Fuji rings on it then rewhipped and varnished the rod. It had no grip on the butt end so I've fitted one. I cannot complain John, it has served me well for 25 years.
John , its good to see you are wearing a crew saver vest . You must be the 1st UA-camr ive seen wearing one whilst shore fishing . Safety is paramount when fishing from shore or boat because you never know when that freak wave is going to hit you .
Thats the main thing isn't it Jon. I understand that there may be a lot of younger anglers also watching these videos so feel it is important not only to show them a good example but also to normalise it for them. Safety first. 😉
Cheers mate! I enjoyed the video.I believe it's the way you go in-depth but not overly explain things in your videos that is the key to keep people excited about watching. When UA-cam first came out I was going to do basically what you do. With 50 plus years of fishing...whether it be recreational...charter or commercial no matter where i go to fish I always take the time to show someone that is new to fishing certain tips to catching more fish. Even when you showed and demonstrated the good old 'Birds nest' I actually demonstrate to our fishing charter guests how to avoid getting them on the way out to the ocean. Most people have never fished a Penn 4/0 before so a little knowledge goes a long way.And of course I explain how to properly set the hook when fishing with circle hooks.(Only took me about 2 years to get proficient with them since I have always been a 'Set the hook' fisherman.) Anyways mate...Finally tomorrow we will have our first charter in the ocean of the year.Thank the Lord ! Being landlocked drives me crazy.lol And we typically run about 250 to 300 trips a year. Well...with that being said...I'm off to get ready for tomorrow. Tight lines and calm seas to you ! From your friend on the other side of the pond.
It is a very fine line between giving enough information and making the subject matter unrelatable isn't it. I have always been the type of person who wished to share with someone rather than watch them feel. So it's good to hear that you are too. Good luck on your charter and tight lines. 😊
Cheers mate , it’s funny to me how things turn out in life .. But it’s almost uncanny how much your up loads have helped me during the past year ! I found your channel during lockdwn , work for the NHS and was advised to shield.. lots of different emotions and feelings about that time , but your passion and knowledge of the coast was a welcome escape from everything.. After a chance family holiday to Norfolk and chance encounter of a beach caster I got to put some of that knowledge into practice, bagged a 5 lb sea bass and watched many a sun rise n set ... It’s been hard at work ... lost Two college’s Graham and Libby .. Both genuinely decent blokes Sir captain Moore passed yesterday at our hospital... RIP Keep em coming fella 👍🏼
You are right, it is a very unusual time in which we are living. I am truly very glad that our videos may be providing some positive distraction for people during these stressful days - that is why we have strived to keep the uploads coming. I was truly saddened to hear of Sir Captain Tom's passing. Best wishes and stay safe.😊
Excellent video for a part time fisherman like myself as I do most of my fishing from the shore. I'm pleased to see that I am not the only one who has trouble with Multiplying reels. I went back to fixed spool a long time ago! Thanks for another great video!
Spent ages converting reels to remove the self levelling winder on the advice of mates to get me a few extra yards...... what a waste of time and reels
I started out using fixed spools, I got some really nice shimano ones. Then I discovered multipliers. The Shimanos don't see the light of day anymore. I absolutely love multiplier fishing.
These beginner videos are fantastic for us novices, even if some of us kind of know the basics. Videos like this help hammer home the fundermentals. Thanks matey 👍
Brilliant video as always. Another tip for the multiplier is put your leader knot at one side of the reel and then when you cast out your thumb on the other side, stops any cuts you might get from the knot. However I'm definitely with you on fixed spools, so much more convenient than a multiplier
Great video, thank you for posting! I am an old boy just waiting to get back into fishing after a good 50 years "lay off". It is amazing to see the huge difference in tackle that is available now and this was so helpful to me, lots of good basic advice, I can't wait to get down to the shore again when all this Covid is sorted. All the best to you and yours, tight lines and thanks once again.
Thank you John. Another great video. I totally agree with that the current fixed spool reels are very efficient with a longer cast. Also as a bonus they are less troublesome especially when fishing at night. Thank you again John. Take care.......
Excellent been fishing for 40 years and have discovered what I've been doing wrong I think I'm standing to close to my bait after I've cast, have found video educational and entertaining thanks John stay safe 👍👍👍👍

Great tips and ideas.... most of the anglers i know use a multiplier for fishing for everything... I use mine for pier and rock fishing....fixed -spool for beaches... And a scarborough reel for deep water rock marks where you don't really need to Cast far....
Hi. This coment made me pause for thought. Is boat fishing better than shore or do you mean course fishing. I love boat fishing because i get to empty my pots and go for a very scenic ride tgen fish. Better than that is shore and pier fishing with our older fishermen. I go just to talk . Catching fish is a bonus. Course fishing is not for me
I loved that video, mainly because I watched it with my boys, and was able to show them the tips that I never got as a kid. Though I’ll be using them from now on! Thanks fella 👍🏻
It's ace John. Just getting together my sea gear and buying some new stuff too. Haven't sea fished for 34 years since Ilfracombe pier. We have a caravan near Bude and your videos have been proper helpful. Been a match and carp angler for all my life but I can't wait for the sea at the caravan. Off there tomorrow. Thanks mate keep up the great videos and if your up this way be great to fish with you. regards Jim
I'm glad you're finding the videos informative and inspiring mate. I put links into the descriptions of most of them for the tackle I use. I hope it helps. 😊👍🏻
Should of known you’d already have a video explaining what’s needed. Thanks for this and your channel in general. It’s brought me hours of entertainment and got me out of some grey clouds.

Hello John. ive watched all your videos since i dont know when , this one is so well put together . well done .I am a seasoned angler and field caster but this was still a good watch. cheers Sie
Outstanding again John thanks for sharing. Just about to start fishing again after 30yrs and looking forward to it, sometimes feels super complicated but I'm here to learn.
Thank John, You have called this Video for "Beginners"😊 I have been fishing since I was 8 years old mate and I have gained some very useful tips and some very useful info on the Tackle, so thanks for that, just shows you that it is never to late to learn something even after 60 years of enjoying my fishing 😂, my old saying is ..... the more you know the more you don't know. Keep um coming mate you are saving us from going cracking in this lockdown🤣 cheers Ian
Thanks I have learned load from this video. I am coming back to fishing after 30 year and hoping to get the excitement I did back then. Keep up the good work stay safe thanks Willie
Great video for beginners, just one thing I will mention, having only fished twice but it may be of importance for beginners is your head position when casting. Make sure you look up when casting otherwise you lose distance as I did on both occasions and ended up with 30-40 yards distance instead of 80-100 yards. Thanks for posting.
Sadly we have a couple of rival channels who encourage their friends to dislike and troll the videos out of petty jealousy. They subscribe simply to copy the videos and 👎🏻 Sad really isn’t it. Notice roughly the same number of dislikes on every video regardless of subject. 😉 Says more about them really than the videos.
Thank you John, spot on tips! I use three rod, One to catch live bait using sabiki rig, second one 10ft to use non return slide with livebait, and third one 14 ft with fish finder rig, or high low rig. Tight lines !! Very informative video! Huge like from Kazakhstan!
@The Fish Locker Cheers Mate, please make one video on how to use sabiki on Rod from surf, normally people use them from pier and deep water, or kayak. But I had a hard time to cast 6 hooks , I decided to divide them, and leave only 3 hooks and sinker
If you have a look through the videos, I have put links into the descriptions with some of the bits of tackle I can find. A lot I simply get from my local tackle shop. Any specific questions send me a PM to the Fishlocker Fb page.
That was very interesting, a proper tutorial, I tell you, James has really come on leaps and bounds as your camera man, following his last week's debut.
@@TheFishLocker Try duck hunting, sub freezing temperatures, standing in water up to your knees , your dog is covered with ice and zero ducks. Still enjoyable though.
One of the best videos I've watched of yours very very good , sometimes when your old you think you know all you need to know but I learnt a few things , I have forwarded the link to my son excellent video !
Brill video as a newbie to sea fishing this really helps ! Im hoping to get out a fair bit more once lockdown is over and i will take all your advice on board . Keep up the good work and keep the beginners lessons coming everyone has to start somewhere and this seems a good place to start . Cheers really enjoyed this one
a tip, if you don't already use it for the overhead reel, is to attach a peace of 1/2" silicon rubber tube on the reel so that lays against the back of the spool. Place it in the center so your thumb can press it against the line for casting to lock the spool and then lean on the line to control the flight, Cheers Peter.
Great vid. For a long time I felt inadequate cos I can't long cast with a multiplier but hey after your remarks I don't care. Put my fixed spool back on without shame.
These are 8 and 9 years old mate. They are due for an upgrade tbh but I’m sentimental like that. 🤣 If you or anyone else is after any advice. Give me a PM on the Fishlocker fb page. 👍🏻🎣🐟
Sentimental. Me too. I have rods older than you. New whipping, two new eyes....same rod. My grandad bought it for me. 1968. Second hand from under the arches at Ramsgate..... You will be remembered for what you do. Thank you. Very best wishes to you all.
Dear, you are doing a great job.... you are amongst the best trainers across the globe. I would love to learn shore fishing by watching all your videos.... Best of Luck from Pakistan...
A1 instruction and experience. It's amazing just how protective of fishing methodology fisherman were in my day, but it's a joy to see you sharing your experience and sound knowledge. Hope you're well and safe. Thank you for everything :)
Now then mate, haven't heard from you in a while. How are you and the family? You are so so right about "fishing secrets" with the older boys. This is something I want to change. I hope that by me showing that we can all benefit by sharing what we know, it will change the mindset. 😊
@@TheFishLocker You're spot on mate. With regards to my family over there, sadly my brothers lad is struck down with covid 19. He was put on a ventilator just a short time ago. We are hopeful after a scare but he is fighting back. You stay safe mate. It's all up to us to encourage our families to be vigilant.
With a multiplier reel when you cast keep your thumb slightly on the line as it’s going out and once you feel it hit the sea floor or anything els stop it with your thumb. Shouldn’t get a birds nest then I’ve only ever had a couple and have used one loads of times
@@TheFishLocker wasn’t aimed at you mate was just putting in my 2pence as advise for others that might not know. Plus I find your channel very knowledgable I’ve learn a lot from you myself. Thanks
I remember using the multiplyier as a nipper, always getting birds nest until my dad fitted a gadget (forgot it's name) basically it fitted onto the reel which if I remember was spring loaded, you past the line through two parallel bars, so when you cast the line the bars sprang back against the reel slowing the line feed which in turn prevented the birds nest, no idea if you can still buy them, reel technology has come a long way in the last 46 years 😂😂👍👍👍👍
Very good and informative video mate👍 simple is the best. I have seen to many people making fishing so complicated it’s just funny to watch them set up gear. Hope you all have a good one😃
Once again John a very educational video, so much valuable information for beginners and very well put across, you keep it simple John! All the best. 👍
Glad to see your still getting out and doing a bit of fishing mate, breaks up this nightmare! When this is done Iv made it my goal to get a rod and a set up sorted, I’m gunna set up a rig from the locker workshop and get down Hastings beach and finally see if I can’t catch myself a wrasse like the one you got with janes this week looked like it should of been caught in Barbados amazing colours on it! I’ll let ya know when I get one ;) Good work mate
When you get sorted mate, give me a shout and we can have a chat about a starter setup for you. PM me on the fishlocker fb page - its easier to track conversations than on here.
@@TheFishLocker yeh I defo will mate... can’t wait to have a go honestly I used to do some fresh water as a kid used to love it... but as life goes on you just sort of forget about it and I defo feel I’d be a better angler these days due to experience, mainly through you lol
Great video and thanks for taking the time to make it, im a carp angler and i have just purchased a cheap set of rods and reels and a tripod and ready tied rigs etc and will be making a 2.5 hour drive for my first beach trip this sunday to chesil beach to have a go, subbed.👍👍
Need to get me one of those rig winders. Spending too much time untangling rigs and yanking hooks out of my hide. P.S., here in the States we generally refer to the stationary spool type as "spinning reels" and the multipliers as "baitcasters or baitcasting reels." I just call 'em "bird nesting reels," since I share your talent at producing them 😁
Really good intro in to the world of shore fishing, maybe one thing I would add is something to protect your finger when you cast, both fixed spool and multiplier, a finger stall, sticking plaster, or even a strip of black or gaffer tape can help you stop getting cuts from the leader. As you only doing an overhead thump maybe not so important.
John, any chance of a 'how to load a spool with line' vid? I've got a new reel but scratching my head about getting the next bit done and a lot of the videos I see on the subject don't really talk to complete newbies, like me!
This was brilliant loads of stuff to take on board.Sorry about always asking lol ,is there a quick safe way of opening fresh mussels, when you finish your session do you have to rinse your line and reel with fresh water or spray cleaner because of corrosion?.Can you get tide charts or precise info on tides and if weather deteriorated will incoming tide be higher or is there a safe distance away you should be before tide turns flooding back in?.These videos are top draw mate simple and easy to understand your a good teacher/communicator so thank you.Stay safe kind regards to whole family.Tony
Love this spot it's my go to and only down the road :) Such a wide range of fish to be caught at this mark for sure. Just waiting for the weather to get back down there. Great vid keep em coming.
Never had much success with sea fishing. This series has got me dusting off the gear to go again and simplify my approach. Those Scarborough cod are in for it 😆.
I've got a multipler but i only use it for on a boat or off a pier where i don't have to whack the cast out as far as im not confident enough to use off the shore
I hope this video helps folks out. We have other videos in our “Shore fishing for Beginners playlist and I have added links in the video description for some of the tackle I use. 😊👍🏻🎣

Outstanding again John thanks for sharing. Just about to start fishing again after 30yrs and looking forward to it, sometimes feels super complicated but I'm here to learn.
I hope the video has helped mate 👍🏻
Thank John, You have called this Video for "Beginners"😊 I have been fishing since I was 8 years old mate and I have gained some very useful tips and some very useful info on the Tackle, so thanks for that, just shows you that it is never to late to learn something even after 60 years of enjoying my fishing 😂, my old saying is ..... the more you know the more you don't know. Keep um coming mate you are saving us from going cracking in this lockdown🤣 cheers Ian
No one will ever know it all Ian. Every day is most definitely a school day. Tight lines mate 😊
Thanks I have learned load from this video. I am coming back to fishing after 30 year and hoping to get the excitement I did back then. Keep up the good work stay safe thanks Willie
I am glad you found the video helpful William. 👍🏻
I may get a couple of casters together for a casting video. 😉
Easy to understand, good advice on how to fish and what equipment and baits to use, out standing John as usual, also great to watch.👍
Thank you Andreas. 😊
Why would someone give a thumbs down. What a fantastic educational video. SMH!
That sounds very logical mate. I would do the same. 😊
@The Fish Locker Cheers Mate, please make one video on how to use sabiki on Rod from surf, normally people use them from pier and deep water, or kayak. But I had a hard time to cast 6 hooks , I decided to divide them, and leave only 3 hooks and sinker
@@organicgardener9106 That video would be about 20 seconds long.
@@TheFishLocker to make it longer I suggest to add how to tie sabiki rig))
@@organicgardener9106 - Ronny. You could try and make one? 👍🏻
Nice, John. Very clear how the "pendulum casting" works.
I will be spending more time explaining casting in future videos. 😊
Excellent stuff!
Just got the surfcast rod and reel + some breakaway shields and 80 -125 gram sinkers. Looking for heavy duty swivels and clips.
If you have a look through the videos, I have put links into the descriptions with some of the bits of tackle I can find. A lot I simply get from my local tackle shop. Any specific questions send me a PM to the Fishlocker Fb page.
My 5yo daughter told me we need to hit the the thumbs up to show some love and hit the notification lol.
She is absolutely correct. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I hope you took note. If not do it now
It's awesome to learn about other fishing types as I sit here in my nice warm ice shanty
Every day is a school day. 😊
That was very interesting, a proper tutorial, I tell you, James has really come on leaps and bounds as your camera man, following his last week's debut.
He is a little superstar isn't he. 😊
Wow this is the one I've been waiting for! I can't wait to fish!
I hope this was helpful to people. 😊
Excellent, enjoyed and the weather change was beautiful. 👍Thanks.
It might have been beautiful from where you were sitting James. It was blooming cold where I was stood. 😊
You’ll never know it all mate. Every day is a school day 😉🎣🐟
Your right john that's why I've saved the vid will watch again , great tutorial. Thanks
Just wish I'd had access to videos like this as a kid!! Very informative as always. Take care mate.
That is exactly how I feel David. Imagine how far we could've come, if we knew then what we know now. 😊
Had some cracking wrasse as a kid using limpets just round the corner of Holyhead, great memories :)
Another nice video John 👍🏻
They are great fun to catch aren't they Neil. 😊
I truly hope that the beginners videos we are creating help people starting out into fishing. 😊
Great video and well explained! Thank you Mate! Cheers from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Any time Joseph 👍🏻🎣
another brilliant tutorial lesson with good info for everyone 10 out of 10 as usual
I hope the video helps people Geoffrey. 😊
a tip, if you don't already use it for the overhead reel, is to attach a peace of 1/2" silicon rubber tube on the reel so that lays against the back of the spool. Place it in the center so your thumb can press it against the line for casting to lock the spool and then lean on the line to control the flight, Cheers Peter.
We will go into that more with future videos on casting Peter. 😊
Love your content miss my fishing used to live by the river Severn used to go shore fishing for cod and conger
Full of dogfish there now. 🤣
Great vid. For a long time I felt inadequate cos I can't long cast with a multiplier but hey after your remarks I don't care. Put my fixed spool back on without shame.
If you can cast far enough to catch the fish, who cares? 🤷🏻♂️🤣
Nice tutorial, several years ago i took some lessons at the local casting club and it help t me allot, my cast where 40% improved !!! 👍
Great job!
Interesting reel seat on the rods John, do you have details for these rods? I've not seen that arrangement before, Cheers Peter
I found this video very well made with some great tips for starting beachcasting, thank you.
Better known as a pendulum cast John- The tork of the rod whips the line out and drives the weight into the air. enjoyed the vlog.
Just keeping it basic for now mate. Will go into proper casting in future videos. 😉👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker give me time to perfect this cast b4 adding another.
Dear, you are doing a great job.... you are amongst the best trainers across the globe. I would love to learn shore fishing by watching all your videos.... Best of Luck from Pakistan...
Best of luck. 😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker I'm always watching your videos too so no worries there, be assured that I am watching on :) Regards to you and you family.
With a multiplier reel when you cast keep your thumb slightly on the line as it’s going out and once you feel it hit the sea floor or anything els stop it with your thumb. Shouldn’t get a birds nest then I’ve only ever had a couple and have used one loads of times
I know how to cast Louis. I showed a birds nest for the beginners to understand.
@@TheFishLocker wasn’t aimed at you mate was just putting in my 2pence as advise for others that might not know. Plus I find your channel very knowledgable I’ve learn a lot from you myself. Thanks
I remember using the multiplyier as a nipper, always getting birds nest until my dad fitted a gadget (forgot it's name) basically it fitted onto the reel which if I remember was spring loaded, you past the line through two parallel bars, so when you cast the line the bars sprang back against the reel slowing the line feed which in turn prevented the birds nest, no idea if you can still buy them, reel technology has come a long way in the last 46 years 😂😂👍👍👍👍
It sounds like a centrifugal braking system and level wind. 😉
Really good learning video. Well done. Keep up the brilliant videos John.
Glad you enjoyed it Neil. 😊
Very good and informative video mate👍 simple is the best. I have seen to many people making fishing so complicated it’s just funny to watch them set up gear. Hope you all have a good one😃
It's only as complicated as you want to make it. 😊
Once again John a very educational video, so much valuable information for beginners and very well put across, you keep it simple John! All the best. 👍
Thank you Stu. 😊
I’ll let ya know when I get one ;)
Good work mate
Good luck and welcome to the channel Wayne. 👍🏻🎣
thanks mate, im new to fishing and this answered a lot of my questions about searching for a shore rod & reel
If you want any more advice just give me a PM on the Fishlocker fb page mate and we can have a chat about it. 😉👍🏻🎣
When setting mackerel on hook, you cut it into filet, what about the head? Does it make sense to use the head as bait ?
It depends on what you're fishing for. Have a watch of the "Shore fishing for beginners - Pier fishing" video. 😉
Yes ,Armen . For conger eels !
Thanks for another helpful video. It'd been a bit quiet for us in Kent the last few trips out.
It's hard work down here as well at this time of year mate. 😊
Need to get me one of those rig winders. Spending too much time untangling rigs and yanking hooks out of my hide.
P.S., here in the States we generally refer to the stationary spool type as "spinning reels" and the multipliers as "baitcasters or baitcasting reels." I just call 'em "bird nesting reels," since I share your talent at producing them 😁
- These are what I use mate. Rig winders - bit.ly/3srVRrg
@@TheFishLocker They even come in colors to help my various rigs organized. Thank you, John!
Stumbled on this. Brilliant vid, impressed. Subd. Now looking for a vid on shorefishing with arthritis. Spot on mate. McIntyre Scotland
I am glad that the video helped. I have also out links in the descriptions of most of the videos showing where to buy the tackle. 😊
Another very useful video. Thanks John
My pleasure mate. 😊
I have honestly never cut my finger using a mono shock leader. I have on braid though, which is another reason why I advise using a mono leader. 😊
@@TheFishLocker Breakaway Cannon on both main rods - helps me get better distance and no sore fingers. I love 'em!
I know what you are talking about because you kindly answered my questions on tides.Thanks.
Comments and questions on here are hard to track. Any questions you are better contacting me on the fishlocker fb page via PM. 😉
this year im going to go into lure fishing more if we can get down will talk to you about a good mark
Go for it mate. 😉👍🏻
Another cracking video John, I definitely agree with you, ref fix spool v multipler, I use the KISS principle in all my fishing 😁
Simple is often the best way John. 😊
Love your videos. Also do you think you’ll catch congers at a causeway
Just use the same principles I show in the pier fishing video for congers.
John, any chance of a 'how to load a spool with line' vid? I've got a new reel but scratching my head about getting the next bit done and a lot of the videos I see on the subject don't really talk to complete newbies, like me!
Fishlocker workshop mate. 😉👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker D'oh, I checked the main channel...thanks for the reply, I will check it out!

Feast or famine down there at times though mate. 😉
Never had much success with sea fishing. This series has got me dusting off the gear to go again and simplify my approach. Those Scarborough cod are in for it 😆.
Good luck and tight lines mate. 😊
I've got a multipler but i only use it for on a boat or off a pier where i don't have to whack the cast out as far as im not confident enough to use off the shore
I am the same mate, pier or boat. 😉
Living in Westward Ho! I've never sea fished. Think I'll try this. Great informative teacher. 👍
We have a couple of great videos from up that way. Check out the shore fishing playlist. 😊
I watch your videos. but can you do one ,on what you do with your kit after fishing,i.e. cleaning it and servicing. many thanks.
