It's hard to comprehend the amount of badassery in this clip.
Amen
Well put....
Lol
I am 76 and grew up listening to these guys. I’ve heard many great guitarists over the years and most of them would agree these are the kings!
There are no proper words.
And wow is not even close.
Chet Atkins is great but Les Paul is from another planet all together. truly a guitar genius.
IMO They're both from another planet.
Chester & Lester...who else could sit there holding guitars named after themselves?? 2 of the best & coolest pickers ever
Two of the godfathers of guitar right here people I'm a millinial and I know it respect to these men
This is the coolest guitar moment there's ever been. These two play like they're having a conversation in the kitchen while doing breakfast. This is how music shoud be.
Gotta love youtube! going back in time to these great artists
Michael Lucarelli I
Hear, hear!
Les Paul just made some guitarists pack away their guitars for a long time. That stuff at the end was insane.
Les was getting sick there. I'm just sorry that I never saw his live shows at The Iridium
Crazy how the guitar started playing the solo before he moved his fingers...
@@eles2147 i did. he was the best. killer sense of humor to boot. great music AND COMEDY!
@@robharms1659 The Paulverizer. ua-cam.com/video/28sVIzLWarY/v-deo.html&ab_channel=MrAudioSoundImages
I think that stuff at the end was actually chet playing & les trying to keep up
I can't imagine this happening on television today with our 5 second attention spans.
Pretty sure people still play live music on TV, old timer. In your defense, it does usually happen after 8PM, so you're probably asleep and miss it.
@@nickfoxx9310 YEAH, SHIT MUSIC A-HOLE
Doesnt matter we have youtube.
not everybody is low iq sliding into degeneration becaue of a lack of intelligence overal in the family, so speak for yourself.
If u went to school or church ur brainwashed and a follower of man, how low can u go
The end is so incredible that's it's hard to believe they really play live.
What a delightful thing to watch. Two masters of their craft who know their way around the guitar better than anyone else.
There's more talent in those four hands than in 90% of all the rockers added together playing today.
I somewhat disagree., They could't play like Clapton when asked who was the best said "who cares? Let's Jam"
Just Lester Paul. Technical-wise, there are death metal bands out there who play with more technique than les paul. But considering his era of music, he's probably the only one who can play like that.
Woah. Someone needs to learn English. I said technical wise. Anyways, I'm not trying to troll. So I can't give less shit if you pretend or not.
Arthur Napolitano One thing to keep in mind, comparing Les Paul to today's metal guys, is that Les is playing with a clean sound, and with what kind of action? As you know, it's easier to play fast if you have a fuzzed out, super-saturated sound, on a metal guitar with a very low action.
I've seen Television live, and Tom Verlaine and Richard Loyd work their asses off to play that stuff on Strats with almost no distortion.
Your mouth to God's ear!
So Les Paul invented the looper pedal?
Add that one to the long list of things we have to thank him for.
Seems to work like a tape looper.
Yep. He did.
He is a legend
what a legend!!!! 20 years ahead of everyone else, with that one
....Yes, and 'analog', not 'digital'......just mind numbingly brilliant....
Les Paul is such a "playful" guitar player. His playing has a sense of fun and humor about it.
He so much fun to watch and listen to. 'Lester and Chester" is a fine album.
Les Paul and Chet Atkins are guitar monsters. Les Paul's speed picking is otherworldly. It's so on point and fast and with his "Paulverizer" doubling the guitar line it was just unreal. Bravo!!
Chet and Les were so cool, and funny, when they performed live. They were both music legends, great friends, performers. And they both had such an amazing sense of humor. They were funny together.
modern shredders couldnt hold the same versatility and finesse as these old cats. Love the first loop pedal attached to Mr Pauls bridge. What a rare and humble individual. That crazy shit he was doing at the end, nothing to compare with, save perhaps Zappa.
everything about that video was absolutely mind blowing!!!
Les paul is a little crazy... but I like that lol
He's a pretentious wanker. He wishes he was Chet so bad.
@@sewagedump Pretentious? No, he was an innovator and one of the giants of modern guitar playing. You're an idiot.
@@sewagedump You're joking right? You know what pretentious means? Les was the real deal and that's just a fact. Who are you anyway?
@@Kedbuka he's also a moron and a sewage dump
@@mehermusic2154 Ok 10 year old
this is insanely good
There's no modern artists that can make me feel star-struck like how these guys do.
These are the guys who invented guitar heroics, and their mastery of the craft never gets old
that was beyond amazing...both playing the guitars named after them and Les Paul with the mind blowing fusion riffs at the end...he was and still is in a class of "amazing" all by himself
AAAAAaamen
The beautiful thing is, none of of us know more than these two greats. Huge fan of each. Chet is so smooth. Makes the ridiculous, look like child's play. Les was untouchable in his younger days. Always enthusiastic, brimming with new ideas. Simpler times, created one of kind musicianship. Be thankful you just watched this clip.
Les Paul never ceases to put a smile on my face.
I had an album years ago called "Lester & Chester" - some of the most brilliant playing I've ever heard. Now I get to see them together! Wonderful!
he also recorded one with Mark Knopfler that was as good
"You'll play in the same key?"
"I'll try - don't leave!"
"I won't!"
*leaves*
7:05.... Les wasn't expecting the prerecorded lick to come in then he hears it and goes OOP and starts to play along IN TIME so no, it's not a vid sync issue. Two great players and one awesome inventor.
holy cow. stumbled upon this ..utta madness ..where is the blown away button
this should have more views
I just added one.
Michael Lucarelli. That's for sure but not many know who they are now..sad but true
The morons out there are too busy listening to J-Zee and Beeoncay!!! Don't you undertand? they give us great music!!!
Michael Lucarelli ad
I know 2of the greats these guys was wow
38 years later...still amazing!
Such a great gem of a video. Watching both these guys play is like watching guitar gods jamming in heaven
LP was a hell of a prolific guitarist. Just discovered him few days ago. He's now in my list of best guitar players ever! : D
It's 2019, and the last 2 minutes of this video are still mind-blowing.
Seriously what are we hearing...
Two of the most talented men to ever hold a guitar. Chet's quiet reserved personality and Les' outgoing fun personality make a great pair.
The speed of Les is of the charts ,
MIND BLOWING !!!!!
Chet plays the bass line , melody and the vocal parts at the same time ...
PERFECTION !!!!!!!
These two greats were my reason for playing and teaching myself guitar and enjoying it all these years.
The drummer is the hero here being able to keep with the beat!!
Damn this makes me happy. And I’m only 40. But i know genius and musical devotion when I see it.
What if I'm only 20?
amazing...totally regret not seeing Les Paul play in nyc at his regular gig.
The absolute masters... My two all time favorites!... Les with that flashy style and Chet with his effortless finger picking style made for such a great duet! Awesome
Young or old, if you do not recognize the pure talent and drive of these two artists, then you're just...well...dead.
xtc1957 Charlie byrd
Charlie Byrd
Amazing, brought tears to my eyes to see these two masters so young, in their prime, and absolutely awesome.
young? they were old as hell in this...lol... les paul was a hit in the fiftys with his late wife, late as in now shes dead.... but glad you liked it.
oakenshanks I KNEW I was going to get called on the "young, prime" thing lol and yes I know very well who they are :) "Old as hell", maybe to your thinking. Not to mine considering they both played nearly to their last days, Chet was 77 when he passed and Les at 94... :)
There are certainly many, many, many great guitar artists but the 2 "smoothest" players are Les Paul and Chet Atkins. Uncannily flawless, even between each note. Simply amazing. Thank you so much for posting this.
Some excellent musicians, no doubt. A word to all the comments about "who's better" and "this guy doesn't hold a candle tot that guy" and all that ... It's not a competition, people. Each musician has their own style and skills and each one is pushing themselves to play the best that they can play. They may learn licks and tricks and get ideas from each other, but their goal isn't to play better than "___________", it's to enjoy what they're doing as much as they can and maybe inspire somebody else.
Thank you for pointing out the inappropriate, competitive attitude.
Greatness never dies.
Someone may someday equal them, but no one will ever surpass them, that would be impossible.
Garegh62 Campbell was good, but not Les Paul or Chet Atkins good. Les Paul could make a guitar do things others dreamed of.
@Garegh62 Glenn was in their realm so was Roy Clark
Tommy Emmanuel.
I love les reaction to the interviwer asking if its only one person playing "OF CORSE ITS ONE PERSON!!!"
Man, what a combination. They make it look so effortless.
Good God! Gene and that hair and mustache, lol. Remember seeing him on the game shows that originated out of NYC in the 1970s as well
Watch their feet, you can tell how differently they feel the music
great detail
This is an incredible piece of musical genius and history.
Simply blown away! Incredible.
Two huge talents! Chet did not invent the guitar he’s playing. Les on the other hand DID invent the guitar he’s playing!
We have some great contemporary guitarists, but Les Paul's black box aside, I'm not sure there's been anyone better and more versatile in the types of music they can play than Chet Atkins and Les Paul....
One of the greatest collaborations of all time
Les lived 31 more amazing years after this! Played up until the end. What an inspiration to anyone that ages!
Eric Clapton said it best when he was asked who he thought was the best. He shrugged his shoulders and said :"who cares?...Let's Jam".
Pip McSqueeza Well, I'm sure Hendrix, as good as he was, didn't think of *himself* as "God."
Pip McSqueeza
I guess it bothers some more than it does others.
+Pip McSqueeza He didn't. His fans did. In fact he hated it. His album "There's one in every crowd" Was originally to be called "The best guitar player in the world. (There's one in every crowd)." But it was changed because the record company feared that people wouldn't understand the ironic self deprecating humour.
+Pip McSqueeza Hendrix said he wasn't the best and that Terry Kath of Chicago was better than him.
+Jay Rock Nurse .....Must have said it before Stevie Ray Vaughn made him admit and I quote "There's no way you're going to do better than him, if you are on the same venue together you just have to resolve to do the best you can"
I like them both!!!
Two masters of the guitar on live tv. It doesn't get any better than that.
Two icons of guitar picking. Having FUN!!!!! Love it.
And when Les says: "Hold my beer and watch this!"
You better have your seat belt buckled...he blows the mind of even the best guitarists...(Chet Atkins)
I think Chet was a little perturbed on this set, but he just kept pickin'. Les was excited because he was actually on TV, and wanted to show everything he knew...God lovem
3:28 Chet getting down with some sweep picking arpeggios
Two of the guitar immortals...
We'll never see their like again...
Fantastic post !
Dan.
So fuc*ing awesome to see this. Thank you for the post.
The first guitar gods to grace us !
I love Les Paul, The Guitar God!
wow, that was awesome. thanks for sharing!! I wish I had seen of one of les' weekly shows in n.y.c., I definitely missed out there. I would give nearly anything to have that guitar with les' delay pedal built right on. don't want to forget chet, just as amazing as the legend himself.
I love this. Two of the best ever.....This is Gold...Jack Baker NYC
Les Paul is a mad genius, even by the standards of twenty years from now. I would like to have heard him and Oz Noy andaybe Guthrie Govan jam
How did he get that mad effect at the end!? Like a carnival organ on acid!
Carnival organs do not use acid
From 6:22 to the end is one of the most beautiful and nonsensical things I’ve ever heard
I'm not sure 🤔
It’s the "Les Paulverizer".
Les says so at 4:39, as does the video synopsis at the top.
Wikipedia says that invention of his allowed him to access pre-recorded layers of songs.
I didn't need the layers.... what he played was very Django Reinhardt esk....(you can hear him play the same runs) . 😃.... and would have sounded great on its own......as he played it so well....
He was an incredible innovator of the guitar and it sound......
Carnival organ on acid..... is a great way to say what we heard lol.... 😃
Just plain simple guitar playing from two of the greatest guitar players ever to pick up a plectrum a pure absolute master class In guitar playing 🎸🎸
Love how during the pulverizer demo he breaks out into lover and the host was not ready for it.
dam , he had a looper pedal on his guitar in 1978
7:07 is insane
80sMeavyHetal agreed
Monsters, masters, geniuses... these guys are beyond cool, and Les Paul IS the electric guitar. Absolutely amazing. How have I never heard about his "paulverizer"?!
For anyone who's wondering, the Les Paulverizer is actually just a remote control for a tape machine he had hidden backstage. It was basically stop and start, and I think he may have been able to selectively mute individual tracks, depending on which part he wanted to play.
Tony Hawk could always play Les Paul in a movie someday.
Imagine this - talented people on a morning show. Don't see this anymore. Just super skinny women that laugh a lot.
And old white men around them that inevitably will be sued for sexual harassment.
haha
Hahaha haha 🤣🤣🤣
So true.... and very funny!...
and not so old white men who will go with anything those super skinny women say to bash all men.
@@oofconnoisseur8025 So offensive to all old white men who have NOT committed sexual offences.
Remarkable to see masters at play. This video is inspiring to see what true mastery looks like. It does not matter what the field or expression; what is inspiring in this video is the dedication, the talent, the skill, and the life force of focusing efforts to create excellence.
Spectacular ! stunning
Oh my God !!!!!! Les Paul !!!!!!!!!!!
Any guitarist would love to have this record. The two great one's.
Thank you. Classic.
So sad they are both gone now... what a Legacy they have both left behind!
Check out the sweep picking at 3:27!!
I love it.
Amazing
Chet is holding back or being humble but Les. WOW! He IS a Monster! ⌒‿⌒
Wow! The two greatest guitarists ever together!
awsome jazzschredder that les paul is! i still cant believe what i just witnessed!
The mustache forgot to mention Les Paul also invented the solid body electric guitar.
If only. That was first patented and sold by Rickenbacker in the 30's. Les Paul's got enough inventions to his credit though. Somehow the Les Paul guitar totally escaped this video. I think his name is more widely known today for his Gibson Les Paul model guitar than for his music, which is kinda sad. He smoked! But the guitar itself is a monster too.
the flying pan rickenbacher was not much of a guitar. yes it may have been electric but from what ive read it was unplayable. Les Paul invented the 1st playable electric guitar called "The Log" along with multitrack, overdubbing, delay effects, his special pickups..etc
@@BeansMaskSheen the original Rickenbacker was very playable although it was a slide guitar. Don't know what you have been reading but a simple search on UA-cam will find a variety of different pre 1941 Rickenbackers being played by various people. Also even besides the Rickenbacker there were electric guitars in the 1930s. Usually archtops made by gibson. The Log was made in 1941.
@@dcs002 Just for the record, the Les Paul was mostly designed by a guy at Gibson named Ted McCarthy. Les' main contribution to the design was the maple top and the original trapeze/bridge tailpiece (which Gibson ditched after the first couple years, because of intonation issues). And there were actually solidbody guitars going back to around 1918, I believe.
@@BeansMaskSheen The "frying pan" was actually designed as a lap steel, I believe. But there were solidbody guitars around 1918, designed by, I believe, Lloyd Loar.
Shut up & let 'em play, Gene...
He has to be as big as them!
Gene Shalit is a dick in this clip.
Chet Atkins looking like a total boss. I'd do anything for either of those guitars.
I remember this. Thank YOU TooleMan87.........OH YEAH.
7:02 Less Paul is tripping and Chet and Gene Shalit are taking it all in WTF
Les Paul's playing drives me nuts.....
its amazing how well they "midnight express" themselves through music. and they both really know how to "foul play" their guitars like nobody else! i couldn't believe my "eyes or laura mars" seeing both of them on the stage together.
I have been playing guitar for about five years, Why did I just now find this
Holy fro-stache!
holy crap. that end jam with les playing 1000 mph is unreal. the paulveriser is a harmonist octave pedal too?
Couldn't get any better
I have this album on vinyl. Sweet tunes, for sure.
