    I first fell in love with Porsches when I played Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed on the PC when I was little. That 1999 911 Turbo is so beautiful!

    I really enjoyed that. My first car was a 914, which I bought from my dad. So when my son asked about a cool first car, it was hard to say no. Keep up the good work guys.

    Love my 993. I use it as my daily driver (just passed 150k miles) and maintain it like an airplane. I was lucky enough to buy when the economy crashed and they could be found in the mid to low $20's. Now they seem like twice that for the most ragged out example.
    Looking for a 996 for my wife now while the prices are low. I don't think they will ever be as expensive as the 993 simply because there were far fewer 993's made, but they definitely won't be this cheep for long. I see 996's regularly for under $15k 4S's even. That is A LOT of car for $15k.

    I came across this video when I was researching my 1st Porsche purchase. I was trying to decided between a 944, 986, or 996. I'm now a very proud owner of a 2000 Porsche Boxster (owned for 15 months already). It is an amazing car and love every minute I'm driving it. This video sealed the deal for me and I decided that the Boxster was the best value. Thanks so much for making this video. For anyone considering a 986, I give it 5 stars. Not necessary the quickest car, but the overall driving experience is amazing. Next car I'm looking at is the 986 or 987. Thanks again.

    'Price per Horsepower' is a weird way to measure non US cars. These are cars that are made up of so much more than that figure.

    I appreciate that old Boxster! That’s got to be the best value of any car. Driving pleasure per dollar is off the charts. I purchased a base model new in 2000 and a GTS model new in 2018. Reliability has been fantastic and the odds of an IMS bearing failure is of little to no concern to me. Depreciation is practically irrelevant when you own a car you never intend to sell. These cars simply making driving enjoyable every single time.

    Long time Porsche enthusiast here. I have owned numerous models. What I will say is this; like it or not, the Porsche 924 saved the marque. It was inexpensive, had a 50/50 weight, best balance, shifted better, wore tires evenly, handled great, best aerodynamics/ CD and was cheap to maintain due to VW/Audi parts. Because of the 924, the 944, 968 came to be. The Porsche 924 is the most underrated Porsche but the model that saved the marque. It's fault was it was the first front engine Porsche and under-powered.

    • @JW-le9ru
      @JW-le9ru 7 років тому +3

      Porsche was in trouble more than once. I have ties with the factory, in the mid 70's Porsche was looking to replace the 911, the 928 was stillborn and the 924 series than 944/Turbo/968 inevitably saved the marque, this is a fact. The 924 was the biggest seller in that era, whereas the Boxster played a role at a much later time.

      Yes Porsche was in trouble more than once...I remember when GM was trying to buy Porsche. My point is, the 924 carried the marque throughout the 70's/80's and later 944/968 line, the production of 335,884 units Porsche wouldn't have made it to the Boxster/Cayenne etc.

      And because of the hatred towards the 924, I can afford one. They are cheaper than old golfs where I'm from.

All of them I have found are convertibles and I do not have a garage and live in the mountains of W.V. any advice on how I can keep it outside and it stay dry? I recently sold my '98 C2s for 3 times what I paid for it 4 years earlier. I honestly believe that the prices of air cooled Porsches are going to plummet in the near future. Though very desirable cars, they just aren't rare. You don't have to scour the world to find one. There are thousands and thousands air cooled 911's out there.

    I really don't understand how the 944 isn't on the list. ( not bias at all lol) But we're not talking about making a fortune off of a Porsche, we're talking about bargains. Yes a lot of 944's are not in the best shape. But they are extremely cheap and parts are extremely cheap and accessible. They are easiest DIY Porsche out there. The engine is in the front with plenty of accessibility and the transmission is in the back, giving it almost perfect weight distribution. Remember that in 84 the best handling car that could be bought in America was the 944. You're getting exactly have of a 928 engine in a light weight 2800lb body. Plus the prices are actually starting to creep up on them. Let's remember that a 944 was a better handling and more comfortable car than the 911 of those same years. Seating position is much more ergonomic and the shifter and clutch are the real deal. Yes I like the Boxster but I don't want to work on a mid-engine with those access areas. A cloth roof that cost 2k-3k to replace is not making the car a bargain. Your basically saying that the plastic window costs half the car. The #1 should be the Porsche 944 because it's so affordable and reliable that it can actually be your 2nd car. I'll bet that the 944 is probably the toughest Porsche ever made if we compare the average odometers against any other Porsche model. Just sayin!

    • @worldhello1234
      @worldhello1234 7 років тому

      Maybe because they talk about the best classic bargains. E. g. 914/4 is realy cheap for a mid engine car but the Boxer 6 version is the exact opposite.

    I have some questions:
    1. Would a 1997/1998 porsche boxster/S be the same as a 2004? And which would be better, a automatic or a manual?
    2. Which is better, a 2003/2004 boxster or a 2009 one?
    Thank you.

      christian olan more or less, the newer ones have very slight changes (a glass instead of plastic window for example) and a little more hp. But they also an IMS bearing more prone to failure (not that you shouldnt change yours if it hasn’t been already). They all are great cars. DEFINITELY get a manual.

    A good list. One point worth emphasizing, if maintained in good condition all of these cars are going to sell for more 10 years from now. Some, a lot more. This is based on a long history. Porsche prices just start climbing after 15-20 years, period. Also a lot of the prices you throw out, yes they probably exist but for cars not in good condition. Of which there are a lot. Restoring a poor condition car is always more expensive than buying good condition. Always buy the best you can find and afford.

    The value of 90s 928s has been on the rise and the 928 GTS have been selling for HUGE money (but that's a truly rare car). A 90s 928 might be a buy if the GTS continues to sell for $100K+. The Ferrari 308 was a high 20s-low30s car not that long ago either and now have doubled in value. I wouldn't be surprised if the values of some 928s gets pulled up. If a 914 can sell for $20K it won't be long before nice 928s start selling for a premium (hell might freeze over before 1980s models with Automatics become collectible).

  • @goatmonkey2112
    @goatmonkey2112 8 років тому

    Great idea for a new series. I always liked the 944 and 928. Same reason, that 928 in Risky Business did if for me. He says they have too many issues to be worth buying at this point. That make me wonder if they are a prime choice for a LS engine swap. I've seen a few 944s at shows with V8s. I know some would say that it destroys the balance that made it a great car in the first place, but the motor swap would make it reliable again and give it a whole new personality. You may lose some of the balance, but those LS motors especially if you find an aluminum block shouldn't be that bad.

      Nothing wrong with a properly maintained 928. I bought one off a 928 experienced mechanic and drove it 2500 miles home.
      The maintenance cost is elevated, but as long as you keep up with it you can run the shit out of them.
      However, if you're not mechanically competent and can't do the maintenance yourself don't buy it.

    A difference in paint on a plastic bumper in comparison to sheet metal is not truly an indicator of an accident.
    Go to any new car show room and look at cars and you'll find this often on brand new autos. The paint reacts differently to plastic than metal.This results in a slightly different appearance. It is common knowledge in the collision/insurance industry which I have been around for 25 years.
    Also most anyone I know ALWAYS replaces decals when paint work is done on a panel. Especially on a car the caliber of a Porsche.

    Love the conversation but you are wrong about the years for the 964. My guess is with over 200 comments someone has already pointed that out but the first year for the 964 if I am not mistaken was 89 with the Carrera 4 launching first and then the Carrera 2 shortly afterwards most likely as a 90. The Turbo was in 91 & 92 as a 3.3 and then the ultimate 3.6 only in 94.

    I have a Cayman GTS but everyone tells me I'm missing the rear engine experience. I'm thinking of buying a high mileage 997 or should I just save some more money and buy a 996? But I'm scared of the LMS RMS issue :( not really a good engineer. Feels like I'll just break the car after a bit

      No way. Most enthusiasts agree that the mid-engine Cayman, especially the S and GTS trims, is the best balanced Porsche you can buy today. I love the 911 and definitely wouldn't mind owning a 991, but not before a 981/982 Cayman.

      yea but every person kinda goes " oh hey wow u own a porsche! a 911 eh?" and i go "oh hey thanks, its not a 911 tho, its a cayman" and then they clearly dont even know what a cayman is but wanna be respectful so they go "ohh....yeahh... right, its very cool! a Cayenne, right ive heard of it" (and yes, ive had multiple ppl think im driving a cayenne lol)

    • @dlg5485
      @dlg5485 7 років тому

      ZDY Well, that's clearly not a 'car person' if they don't even know Porsche's only other sports car model. I would be forced to ridicule that person relentlessly until they walked away in shame lol.

      @ZDY66666 7 років тому +1

      D LG sadly many ppl have more extreme opinions (especially the muscle car boys, and definitely not 911 owners, they respect all Porsches) that Cayman is a crap car, just a 911- Lite version with no power and trash.
      but then I show them cayman GTS track records compared to their car's. That usually shuts them up.

    Here I am buying a 924 tomorrow. Where I'm from, it's 1/4 the price of a 944. It is cheaper than an old golf. To me that's a bargain.

    924s aren't known for rusting. Rear sills maybe but same as the 944. Same age 911 would be far worse.

    Is the Cayman not a better deal than a Boxster? The roof adds more stiffness to the chassis, it has more power, and the prices are crazy low.

    My brother bought a LHD 911S ('76 model), about a year or so ago for the princely sum of approx. $3.5K. Yes the engine 2.7 was dead, and it had a whole lot of other minor issues, untidy interior, leaking sunroof, and a rubbish paint job. But he bought a good 2nd hand engine for another $3K, a whole range of other interior parts and later on will strip and respray it. A bargain undoubtedly in the 911 bubble for sure.
    As for 944, not all are rubbish and will get you "upside down" to use such weird terminology. A good condition, low km 944, Turbo or even S2 are still very much worth considering. Even a 968 could be a good option. Turbos and S2s are if anything by the market out here in Oz starting to increase in price. So if you want one, and can find a good one, I would suggest getting in now before they too become too expensive. Out here the only "bargains" are older model "Coxters" early 944s and 997s. Even the last of the air cooled "911"s have risen in price.

      +Krzysztof Blach It could be a fun toy if you can find a good example, but keep in mind they are old cars now. Most of them have been tinkered with and almost every one will have been fixed on the cheap by people who really didn't know what they were doing. As long as you understand going into it that the thing is going to break and you will lose money on it then it would be a fun toy to have.

    • @CarsonmyMind
      @CarsonmyMind 8 років тому

      +Krzysztof Blach They're great, and the handling is so good. Only issue is that it's an old car and things happens. If you send send it to the porsche mechanic it will be expensive. But if you can fix thing by yourselves, it will be an affordable and good sportscar.

    • @Guy_de_Loimbard
      @Guy_de_Loimbard 8 років тому +2

      +Krzysztof Blach I'll give your brother the same advice I gave someone else here in the comments section: Get a 924S instead. It has a 944 engine/driveline in a 924 body, making it lighter, more aerodynamic, and therefore quicker. What's more, you can typically get one for about 2 grand cheaper than a 944 in similar condition and with similar miles because people think it's dog-slow like the regular 924 so nobody wants one. So you can scoop one up for a song.

  • @1guyin10
    @1guyin10 8 років тому

    Like most people, I don't really consider the 924 to be a Porsche. It was cobbled together with various VW and Audi parts and was almost as reliable as a Yugo, especially after it had aged a few years. Even if you could get an acceptable amount of horsepower out of it, the suspension and brakes were still spindly parts bin units that were more suitable for a VW Rabbit. There is a reason you see them sitting in the edge of the woods beside ram-shackled mobile homes. The 944, on the other hand, was a great car in its day. I know a few people that still have them. Unfortunately most of them have not been properly maintained and buying one today means you are likely buying someone's money pit.

    • @akjones9909
      @akjones9909 5 років тому

      I agree the 924 was a piece of junk. What will really turn you off is the fact Porsche dealers charged you like it was a 911. Its a VW with assist from Audi.

  • @Chris.Davies
    @Chris.Davies 8 років тому

    Oh dear - TFL doesn't know their Porsche 911 series. The 964 was produced from 1989 to 1994 - not 1984 to 1989. That would be the "Carerra 3.2" with the famous G50 gearbox.
    You forgot to mention that the 996 Turbo is, in reality, 2/3rds of a 959, with a stiffer body shell. That alone makes it worth 3-to-4 times more than the asking price. This car is going to explode in value in the next 10 years. At least the equivalent of 100K today in 2026. Probably more than that.

      The 3.2 Carrera came with the 915 gearbox for 1984-86. The G50 was in the 1987-1989.

    I know this show is over a year old but....I have to disagree on the 944. Okay, an NA 944 has been a cheap "by your kid a real Porsche for little money and let them thrash it" But the 944 turbos are a screaming deal and I believe set to appreciate in the next few years. 1. Very easily modded to make crazy horsepower and if taken care of will last forever.. 3. 50 50 weight distribution, they handle very well.. Yes I own one and so maybe I am biased but as the rest of the Porsche line up goes through the roof these become more desirable by the day. Mine has the chip set and wastegate etc...it is putting out 300 to the wheels and is an absolute blast to drive. Find one that's been taken acre of it is a steal I gave 11K for mine with all the records since 1998 and it is pristine inside and out with just a couple of minor issues.
