Learn something new every day. After watching this, I did a Google search on the IMS bearing. You definitely do not want the 2006 thru 2008 models, and even a few of the very late 2005 models -- those bearings cannot be replaced without completely tearing down the entire engine. And they're definitely crappy bearings. After this, you couldn't pay me to own one of those models... This '99 996 is a far better design -- dual-row bearing, that's easily replaceable. I would drive one of these with confidence.
Yes, pre 2000 year Boxsters seem to be best.
Unfortunately, the IMS bearing is STILL problematic (especially if you dont use the car often) due to OIL deposits behind the IMS bearing and developing Acidic properties over time.
This means (sort of) that you have to replace the OIL much more often than youd expect AND not only keep an eye on your oil deposits when replacing it (meaning you have to do it yourself so that you can keep a good track record on your oil deposits and how they increase or decrease) but also cleaning it properly (and this means basically pulling the bearing out of the engine every six months for cleaning).
That would be ideal. At least that is what I learned from reading over it online and watching youtube videos so Im obviously an expert in the subject.
This is an excellent video series. These are exactly the things you should be doing when buying a 996. I was seriously considering one just like this for a while, you may sway me to actually do it. I'm hoping you guys continue with this car for a while, I really want to see how it goes. I like these guys doing to work too, it makes me wish Rennstall were on the east coast. The 911 and the Hellcat videos too, they seem like complete opposites, but I love them both.
I think it is really hard to film people working on engines, but you guys did a good job.
Very good content. For all of us concerned about the Porsche IMS Bearing
issue - I found a very informative article from Autohaus Hamilton in Australia
about the IMS. The article also lists all the models and engines (with engine
numbers) that are affected. To read the article just type in “Autohaus Hamilton
IMS” into google. The Porsche models that are prone to IMS failure and should be
replaced are: - All 986 Boxster models. - 987 Cayman & Boxster models up to
engine number 61504715 - All 996 models (not including: GT and Turbo models) -
997 3.6ltr with M96/05 up to engine number 6950745
Before 2000 Porsche used a double row IMS Bearing which
had a low failure rate, then Porsche switched to a single row until 2005 - 2006
and this single row has had the most problems. After 2005 - 2006 Porsche stayed
with the single row but beefed it up significantly and this bearing has had the
least problems of all three types of bearings used from 1996 to 2008. The
upgraded bearing in the 997 and 987 is unserviceable, meaning you can't reach it
unless you strip the entire engine down. From my research the IMS issue has been
greatly exaggerated, mainly due to a cottage industry that produces and installs
IMS Bearing replacements, so naturally it's in their interest to scare all 996,
986, 997 and 987 owners into thinking all their engines will suffer IMS
failure.
Interesting series and I haven't been a Porsche enthusiast......yet the 996 is always tempting...
This is a fascinating series and I look forward to seeing them now as you go every Saturday. Great stuff!
This is an awesome video, an awesome channel; it's Porsche episodes are the BEST!
Thank you Roman for doing the Porsche Projects. I recently did the oil change on 2017 Cayenne and there not too many videos on Porsche out there. The dealership charges ridiculous fee for a simple oil change.
I absolutely enjoy your Porsche videos! Keep ´em coming!
Awesome video, good info! Porsche there is no substitute!!
Looking forward to the updates!
Great work!
I'm glad you did it right. It's a joy to watch a professional/
This video makes you appreciate what you pay your mechanic what you do
$2600 is not bad to replace the clutch & IMS bearing
This is why I drive a Tiptronic S.
Have you guys ever showed a Ford Escort ZX2? Love to see one. :)
soo many subies😍
So watching the video @ 11:38, you can see the open end of the bearing. Isn't that installed backwards? Shouldn't that be pointed towards the inside to the crankcase for the oil or am I misunderstanding something? Also, I would never replace the bearing on a 99 at this point.
When is the next episode coming out? Wasn't it supposed to be posted on Feb 20th?
Great video, very informative! 996 is a much better car than the 928, but still wish you would have found an s4.
This week in IMS bearings?
Damn, so you lose the whole engine once that bearing decides to fail? Are the PDK transmissions more reliable?
What was that, a $200/hr labour rate?
Do I see a Fox body Mustang in his shop?
Must have on these car just for peace of mind, I let it slide on by Boxster being a £6k car not getting a £1.8k job done to protect a £3k engine, it was worth the 5% risk however on by C4S costing £26k i ensured it was done before I even picked up the car
Watch a lot of your videos. This is one of my favorites.
Thanks for the kind comment. Very much appreciate! This is a fun series to produce.
Looking forward to more like this. This is on par with climbing up Gold Mine Hill
+The Fast Lane Car Hey, how come you toe rags never thank me when I call you not fit to burn❓ Honestly, you're just a bunch of bloody ingrates‼️😤
+MrKeyboardCommando oh man, auto correct got you pretty bad there. I think what you meant was "HEY! SOMEONE! look over here and pay attention to me because my parents don't!" Well pal, consider it done.
The Positive Commenter Guy What are you bleating on about ? What's autocorrect got to do with it ? You must be from the USA, you're definitely stupid enough !
Couple hundred for a IMS bearing on a Porsche? I expect a couple thousand considering the transmission is dropped.
+bmwmsport11 FYI: $2600 for the new IMS Bearing and a new clutch as Roman points out in the video.
+The Fast Lane Car 2600 is a bargain...
Not really my friend used to have a 996 and he did the same job at a local porsche expert and payed something similar.
Ofcourse if you drop it off at a dealer youll get raped, but you dont do that with an almost 20 year old car. There are people who know these cars alot better than the youngsters at dealerships.
how strong are the non pdk automatic porsche transmissions from 911 , cayman/boxster from 1997-2008 years
the PDK didnt come out until the 997 series in 2004 so nothing before that
Kristoffer Lilja what's your point ?? i asked how strong are the "non" pdk regular automatic transmissions from porsche from that era ,
Slickpete83 oh i misread that
does ims bearing problem only with manual shift 997 I have 06 997 with tiptronic auto
+Edmund Garcia the problem is with the 996
+Edmund Garcia With all do respect to TFL, the problem is a possibility till 08, regardless of transmission.
- All 986 Boxster models.
- 987 Cayman & Boxster models up to engine number 61504715
- All 996 models (not including: GT and Turbo models)
- 997 3.6ltr with M96/05 up to engine number 6950745
What Ims replacement bearing system for you recommend to replace the original?
Nm
I see the LN bearing now lol
No wonder you only get 60-70k miles out of a new clutch plate when you use an impact gun to tighten the pressure plate. Tighten bolts bit by bit in a star pattern, it is a big metal spring after all.
If you know your impact gun well, it's okey, it's not all that important. Doesn't affect the lifespan of the clutch.
Why jump segments all the time? I would much rather see a two part video with each part at a time.
Otherwise I love this series!
@3:31 Dragan Nikolic
It has always been strange to me that 911 clutch life, or recommended replacement is 60-80K, while lots of other cars with the same power go way past that. Maybe it is BS and they can go quite a bit longer.
view the photos of the checking and wear, you could always be Einstein and drive it twice as long and then have to replace the motor because of premature failure of a $200 part.it pretty much depends on how many stupidly hard launches the car was subjected to as well.if you cant really afford a couple grand every couple years, take the bus.
Bro looks like Eminem's long lost brother...
no he looks like Jeff the liquidator from that liquidation tv reality show , just Google it and u will laugh hhaha..
+Slickpete83 oh crap, he does look like him 😂😂
Yuck..... Roloc disc on the flywheel..... Impact wrench on the pressure plate. My eyes are bleeding now.
