I have driven four different 911’s, but my father’s 1963 Carerra Convertible was a gem. But, I say was because my parents got divorced and that beauty went away. Yet, I can still feel those gorgeous leather seats, wind hitting me in the face doing 150 mph on Hwy 1 north of Santa Cruz, and the cornering on the ride back from Half Moon Bay turning South from 92 to 35 at Skyline. The 997 seems to be the sweet spot for 911 purchases right now. It's the right combination of a modern car with the classic 911 look, and there are bargains out there if you want to look for them.
Exactly what I've been thinking lately, for a long time I wanted to get a 993 when I get enough money for it, but after some consideration the 997 seems like the perfect deal for the price, it has that sweet chemistry between the modern tech and old day mechanical engineering without the ugly design of the early 996s
I fell in love with Porsche when I was 10 years old and my good friend’s dad brought home his brand new 1985 930 Turbo (white) home while I was at his house on a sleepover. He pulls in the driveway and says “get in boys we’re going for a ride”....I’ve been hooked ever since.
I was in high school when my uncle was teaching me how to drive a stick in his 911 Porsche. Not exactly sure what year it was but, I have been hooked on a Porsche ever since.
Celebrated 20 years with my 911 Cabriolet last May 1st. 116,000 miles on original brake pads, and got real lucky on the IMS bearing. Replaced it with the clutch last year. Bearing was cracked and close to failing. Any 911 is a great car.
Newest 911 is essentially a touring car now and not even a proper sports car. They’ve gone full Aston Martin now. If you want a great new 911 your only option is a GT3, otherwise just get a cayman or even a boxster.
@@NoxiousPond No, they have the bonkers quick 911 Turbo S, and the Carrera 4S too, which was surprisingly quick despite being less powerful than the Turbo S' one.

I was bitten by the Porsche bug as a 14 year old in 1978. I saw a big shot guy in a sheepskin coat getting out of a bright orange 911 RS ducktail in city centre Manchester, England. That was an extremely rare sighting in 1970s labour government run UK, especially in the North. You cannot imagine how jaw dropping that sight was, not only to me but to many poor northern folks who just caught sight of that. Then 1979 Paul Newman came 2nd at Le Mans in a 935, I had no idea that actors raced for real until that famous Hollywood movie star stole the show at the hardest endurance race in the world. The same year I was nearly knocked down by a spaceship (928 and European Car of the year 1978) on a wintry Sunday morning whilst delivering newspapers in my neighbourhood, I would have died happy 😂. The 80s was basically 911 love/hate frustration as the flash and ignorant Yuppie community jumped on the Porsche ownership bandwagon nearly ruining its image and reputation. It was a relief to see that cliche die down by the mid 90s. I love all the supercars - Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren etc... but only a Porsche raises the hair on my neck on sight, especially the 911, that signature body shape has changed little since its birth, and it’s spectacular racing heritage only cemented it’s awesome legacy with me as I grew up. So I always raise a glass to the legendary Porsche 911 too when we celebrate our birth years together. I still cannot afford one, but soulmates we are and maybe one day we can be together... 😎🙏🏽
I picked up my 996 pre pandemic. I wasn't looking for a Porsche but I couldn't pass it up. I'm so happy I bought it. It makes me happy every time I look at it and drive it. I'm not a rich guy but I own a Porsche 😊
Last autumn I finally entered the Porsche tribe by buying 997.1 Carrera S. The reason was it is the nicest 911 ever built in my eyes. Expecting the bore scoring issue in the future, but when you love it, there’s no other way to go 🥰
Be more honest on your video and less bias the ims bearing is not cheap to fix just for the bearing alone on 2023 prices is more than $800 dollars add labor to that, your price will be somewhere around $1500-$5500 dollars depending we’re you are located and what shop you take it too and what other things need attention during ims bearing replacement.
Good points. I bought a 1976 Porsche 912e in 1999 for $4,400, I drove almost every day and some years it was the only car I owned. In 2015, I sold it for $16,500.
The Daytona would beat the 911 off the line and sprint out to a huge lead around the track until, the Ferrari driver put .9999 miles on it then pulled over and put it on his trailer to take home so he wouldn’t put any more miles on it, or it broke. Then the 911 would zip by.
I have had the 997 and the 991 for the past 14 years as my daily driver, all I have done to the two cars has been changing the oils every 7000k-10k miles. I always felt that the both cars drive like their first day.
Thank you for this....I feel a little better about my 2001 Black 996 Carrera ....Lol. I bought it 5 years ago with 70k miles for 23k. The local PCA endorsed mechanic gave his seal of approval and said just drive it the way it was intended to be driven and don't worry about the IMS....Lol
Suffered a mid life crisis in the mid 2000's and decided to purchase my dream car. So in 2005, I purchased a 1988 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa. It was the Commemorative model in a gorgeous Diamond Blue Metallic paint, signature head rests, short throw G50 5 speed transmission and matching Fuchs wheels. It only had 35K miles when I bought it. I LOVED that car. It was only for health reasons I had to sell it about 4 years later. It had just shy of 45K miles and sold for 7K more than I paid for it.
Regarding the cost of maintaining a 911, I own a 2016 C2S; one of the last naturally aspirated 911’s built. It is coming up on the 40K maintenance which is $4000 at the dealership. 4K for something I will never see, like new plugs, oil and filters. Ugh!
I knew that I could count on you to produce an amazing tribute video for Porsche’s iconic 911. You did not disappoint. I would love to cross over to water-cooled years (mine’s an ancient ‘87 cab.). I personally love the 996, despite it’s racing inspired headlights. The shape just looks so much more refined... more modern. And I find those graceful lines have aged timelessly. Your video, with it’s Ideal touches was very well thought and edited. Thanks Brad.
bought my 1997 C2 (993) 8 years ago pretty much today - this thing is a tank and best decision ever! I drive it everyday and cheapest car ill ever own - i do my own work, but mainly oil changes. Track work, road trips, driving the kids to school - does everything!
My preference would be the 991.2 GT3 Touring. It’s basically a 911R for a fraction of the cost. 4.0L NA, 8500 rpm redline, 6 speed MT, with comfy leather interior and killer looks with the GT3 fascia up front. That would be my dream 911. Great video!
Pretty good video. Not EVERYTHING you need to know, however. First, The 996 GT3 and Turbo cars have a Mezger engine and thus no IMS issues... (Coolant pipe adhesive failure is another story but still...) Second, only around 750 GT3s were brought to the US in 2004 (roughly half of worldwide production) and around 200 for 2005. Total production for the 996.2 GT3 is around or slightly fewer cars than the vaunted '73 RS 2.7 You're absolutely right about the appreciation. 996.2 GT3s are rapidly heading for 6 figures. I think 996 TTs still represent good value, even though they have gone way up in the last couple years. A few years ago we got a 2004 Turbo cab with around 30K miles for less than $45K. Nothing on the planet for that price can touch the car. Note to the host... if you don't like fried eggs (who does), get rid of the stupid amber repeaters in the headlights with Philips silverlight bulbs. They light up amber and disappear in the headlight. Also, dump your amber side marker lights and get clear, again putting the silverlight bulb in there so no amber anywhere... For the doubters out there, I have a 996 Turbo Cab (X50), 6 spd, a 2004 Turbo Cab Tiptronic and a 2004 GT3 9 (you'll cry when you hear what I got that for with 18,500 miles back in 2011). If you have the right engine in the back, it doesn't matter what the headlights look like. Yes I am trying to corner the market on Mezger-engined 996s LOL!!! What other low mileage high-performance car can you buy for less than the cost of a replacement engine??? Unreal value for money! Enjoyed the video-- keep up the good work... like the choice of the C4S... probably the best deal nowadays on a great all-around 996...it is what I recommend to my friends looking for their first 911.
Alot of Porsche owners are 60 yr old boomers but me being young I still love the car and if I do any crazy moded 911 I'd take a classic 911 shell w a modern interior w widebody with a modern 911 turbo engine and transmission swap
If you wanna buy a 966 buy the turbo model since it doesn't have the ims and rms problems like the n/a porsches, also get a manual transmission since it can be really expensive to repair an automatic transmission in case it breaks.
If you can buy a porsche you can also pay for all the others. And if I had the money to buy a porsche probably I wouldn't care about what a person on a video says..
I purchased my first Porsche in 1972. A 912 that I drove for 5 years. Great car oil changes and tires were the only expense. Sold it and bought a 280Z. Missed the Porsche very much and had to buy another 912. Bought a 69 Targa . A rare car only 800 were made. My neighbor let me drive his 80 SC after that had to buy a SC. I bought a 83 SC and still own it. Great car.. bought a 2014 911 coupe..love it with the PDK. This car is light years ahead of the 1960s Porsches. If you are a car person buy one..
Thanks for the very informative video. Although I'd have to make a spreadsheet to list all the iterations of the 911, you've helped out a lot. Thanks!!
I’ve owned a 2003 996 turbo for the past 7 years and in that time it has doubled in value which is good I guess but the incredible thing is a 20min drive today still fills me with as much contentment as when I first picked it up.
I love my 996 1998 first Gen.. Yes IMS is done.. water cooling is what is needed for a daily driver he in Australia 30 to 45 degree Celsius try doing that with an Air cooled version Just bought a Boxter s 2002 as well loving it just as much
I strongly believe Brad is infatuated with the Porsche brand, he can’t help himself talk about the German sports car this enthusiastically. BTW the 993 is the very best and sexiest 911 E V E R created. 👍👍
996 is certainly a good deal. They’re great cars for the back roads. But the base models do not have dry sump oil recovery. Take it on the track at your own risk - oil starvation kills an engine very quickly.
Porsche's are a great value when you line them up against any 'super car' are 'hyper car' and you compare them and 80% of the time the Porsche is cheaper and will out performs it's competitors I like the GT3 versions as my favorite with a manual transmission.
I have a 03 996 c2 6spd coupe, 170k it was my daily driver for a decade. I still drive it but wanted an auto suv for a dd. Coil packs, water pump, starter were all that went bad in that time.
For starters , blame the California air research board for the aural difference between 993 and 996 , the fins were the conduit for the tingling ears . 993 c4s with a full 993 twin turbo exhaust from the head face to the tail pipes , I would try the same conversion on you 996 C4s .
The headlights on the 996 are actually a cost effective solution by integrating all the requisite signals into one albeit not so tidy package, but hey! It’s time is coming.
its the reliability versus all other sports brands. My porsche has never had a problem, both my BMWs had problems. Can't imagine the headache of an Aston or Ferrari
Actually it wasn't the Porsche that flew into the ditch, THE DRIVER DROVE THAT CAR INTO THE DITCH, not everyone can drive a Porsche and not everyone can drive a Toyota
Hey, you completely skipped over the 911 SC's and Carreras! Great air-cooled 911's that have gone way up in value. Great reliability and bang for the buck.

Thanks Brad.
this was one of my fav vids we made this year! I can't wait to make some more porsche content!! keep rippin your g body!!
Thanks. It was a great one. Happy Columbus Day (despite his never ever actually landing on it).
These things have hella reliability too 👍
I LOVE my 996 w/ the PSE ~~~~ neighborhood friendly~~ but! When I get on the gas~~ It sounds like it is on the race grid!!
I have an '02 Carrera 4 Cab, and I LOVE it. I've been crazy for Porsches since the 356-series, and I am very happy with what I have.
993 Turbo has always been my favorite for some reason.
bought my 1997 C2 (993) 8 years ago pretty much today - this thing is a tank and best decision ever! I drive it everyday and cheapest car ill ever own - i do my own work, but mainly oil changes. Track work, road trips, driving the kids to school - does everything!
& who hates the 993? I think zero people.
997 GTS would be my pick of the bunch.
What you mean??? Those 996 headlights are dope as hell!!!
Porsche enthusiasts get more and more crazier about the 911.
Is just a fine product to the world's tarmac.
in many eyes the Porsche is the perfect car ever made, the 911,iconic,legendary and the true meaning of performance
Got a 996.2 Targa this year and have been having so much fun with it!:) Thanks for the vid!
I cant believe people hate the 996,its my favorite 911
As I was born in 93 it’s the 964 in black will always be my favourite as it was the picture my dad had in is office when I was little
Just bougth that car 2 months ago....911 964 3.3 liter turbo black color 1991 model....love it😤but expensive🥸
This helped convince me to buy my first 997 C2S then a GT3, thank you!
Csr 997.2 for me, 360-480bhp no more
Is it just as reliable?
Im just gonna watch this despite having no intent to buy a Porsche of any kind
Alot of Porsche owners are 60 yr old boomers but me being young I still love the car and if I do any crazy moded 911 I'd take a classic 911 shell w a modern interior w widebody with a modern 911 turbo engine and transmission swap
Having an air cooled 911, all others can only dream.
991s around 2017 are the most attractive ones ever made while being a properly modern driving experience
Is it a manual transmission or PDK?
@@Handgun777 03 didn’t have pdk. I think it had tiptronic
Still looking for a 993 Targa in my price range. Love that car!
Did you buy a 993 targa? I am looking for one also
997 for sure, thanks for the video, very informative !
I love my 996 1998 first Gen.. Yes IMS is done.. water cooling is what is needed for a daily driver he in Australia 30 to 45 degree Celsius try doing that with an Air cooled version
Just bought a Boxter s 2002 as well loving it just as much
My favorites are the 2020s Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Type 992
2020s Porsche 718 Cayman S Type 982 but I’d go for a 1998 Porsche 911 Type 993 💛🥵🤩🙌😍
I strongly believe Brad is infatuated with the Porsche brand, he can’t help himself talk about the German sports car this enthusiastically. BTW the 993 is the very best and sexiest 911 E V E R created. 👍👍
Great video Brad.My ideal Porsche would be 996 911 C4s similar to yours in a manual transmission.Especially as they are still affordable.
Please update your video to include that the 996 IMS problem does not affect the turbocharged models. Thanks in advance.
You can tell Brad loved making this vid.
930 turbo would be a dream come true. But at those prices I think it will always remain a dream
996 is certainly a good deal. They’re great cars for the back roads. But the base models do not have dry sump oil recovery. Take it on the track at your own risk - oil starvation kills an engine very quickly.
IMO the 997 has the best taillight design
Love all 911's but checkbook settled with a Boxster. Less HP but the handling with a mid motor is absolutely crazy.
Fun fact: almost no one watching this video is gonna buy a Porsche any time soon ( corona ) but we all watch it because we enjoy it anyway
Facts
Jokes on you I already have one
Roblox A5 planning on getting one next year.
Fun fact: a 996 is easy to find for under 20k so alot of people watching this could probably buy a 911 if they wanted to
I'm currently looking for one.
The headlights on the 996 are actually a cost effective solution by integrating all the requisite signals into one albeit not so tidy package, but hey! It’s time is coming.
“Aren’t Nobel prizes for like books and stuff?” Yes, you are absolutely correct
its the reliability versus all other sports brands. My porsche has never had a problem, both my BMWs had problems. Can't imagine the headache of an Aston or Ferrari
Just saw a lot of super cars this weekend at an event. But that Porsche is always my favorite, since childhood.
I liked the one trying to actually corner and flipping into the ditch.
Actually it wasn't the Porsche that flew into the ditch, THE DRIVER DROVE THAT CAR INTO THE DITCH, not everyone can drive a Porsche and not everyone can drive a Toyota
I currently own a 997.1 turbo 6spd (MEZGER🥰🥰). Previously I had a 997.2 C4GTS pdk. I love the 997s, mix of retro and modern..... I do miss the GTS
RWB might be the best way to take the value through the roof ❤️
There is nothing better than a German car build by a Japanese guy🔥
haha thats true!
I don't know if this guy was more coked out when he was filming this or when he was editing it. Holy shit.
Everything that is wrong with UA-camrs is exemplified here - no research, no idea, no credibility. Misinformation galore!
Hey, you completely skipped over the 911 SC's and Carreras! Great air-cooled 911's that have gone way up in value. Great reliability and bang for the buck.
What i came here for. Looking at a targa import one atm
