- /DRIVE CLEAN's first episode of season 2 is set to cover one of the most overlooked aspects of buying a used car, and that's the pre-purchase inspection.
If you intend to purchase a used classic and spend your time driving and protecting it, then you would do best to inspect it before you buy. This particular car is a second hand Porsche 911 and the buyer in question is admittedly obsessive. We took the opportunity to document the whole transaction from begin to end, and noted 10 actionable steps that will help you when buying a used car.

You: "Hi, I looked at your 911 this morning. I'd like to schedule it in for a PPI, if you'd be able to help get it there?"
Owner: "Uh, yeahhh... Sorry man, another guy came 20 minutes after you left, and paid the asking price on the spot. Good luck, dude!"
So true with looking to buy an older 911, most of the time the price is right however there is always someone willing to buy on the spot. Then when that 911 gets sold it is in terrible condition.

Hey guys, remember the actual "Mechanical PPI"...ie with a mechanic who you have to pay, took 1 afternoon to perform which the owner was there for. He wanted to sell the car, and I asked him to meet me at the shop. I dont like to waste anything, especially my back breaking money. I also told the owner he could have a copy of the PPI when I was done if I didnt buy it. Fair trade. 1 afternoon, potential buyer, $300 inspection of his car. You inspect a house before you buy right? Why not a car. -L

I've never done a PPI and I've only bought lemons.
But that's okay. I only get really mad when people have been playing with the wiring, which is every time.
Please leave your stock wiring harness alone guys. Please.
First car I ever bought someone had disabled the fog light over ride somehow. Lifted the fuse box and took apart the dash and there were just tons of wires that were poorly spliced, split, or just plane cut for no reason.
I never figured out how to fix the brights.

"The engine is good, the engine is healthy"...fast-forward to the rebuild video where they find all sorts of broken bits of metal and screws etc. floating around inside the engine. Engine compression is not a standalone heuristic for engine health.
***** I've never bought a car without it going up on a rack. If the owner won't let me take it to an independent shop and have it thoroughly inspected then I know they are trying to hide stuff and I walk away. No big deal, plenty of other sellers out there.
If you are a seller, and someone wants to take it to a shop, let them. You have insurance that covers theft (I hope), and you take the person's ID card. If they take the car and never come back, well they have stolen the car, just call the cops. Your insurance will reimburse you and you save yourself the hassle of selling the car.
+NuffNuff even if you can't drive it to the mechanic yourself, sellers who are serious will arrange a time to take it to the mechanic of your choice.

In this market you only have to deal with this stupidity if you ask too much or it's a garage queen....when I bought my 911 there was a list of people waiting if I backed out, I only got the car because I was the first to arrive and say I'll take it for asking price.
