Luckily some of us know BASS is the coolest instrument 😎
It sure is!
Yessss
So many great YT bassists and it’s still underrated
Agreed!🤟
Epic No string slap bass solo INCOMING !!!
Man that audience member just clapping willy-nilly was hilarious.
Sometimes it feels like that 🤣
Drunk people...they are often funny
Clapping straight on every beat or the 1 and 3 is bad enough
At our gig last weekend someone gave a very large, very loud cowbell to a 4 year old near the stage who managed to hit the beat about as well as you'd imagine. The band just kept shooting terrified glances at each other OMG CHALLENGE ROUND BEGIN
Yeah, I'd expect someone of the rythm group to be especially sensetive to bad rythm.
As a Bass Player for 1 and Half Year, the 1 Year Progress one is absolutly correct
Check
Playing an instrument is so daunting... I've been trying to learn for like 2 years and I feel like I haven't made any progress for months.
been playing for 3 and that part made me laugh the most. hilariously accurate
Not true, I think that was the first bass-line I learned.
I'm trying to learn by myself again, the thing is that my life's been like a roller-coaster and I got so busy I couldn't practice for almost an entire year, but now I'm practicing everyday, progress is coming, step by step but it's coming :D
Bass is so undervalued you don't even get copyright claimed for playing licensed songs
This deserves more likes
I think it goes over ppl's head
I can see this comment be under every bass videos
Ssshhhh
Saw the article about you in Guitar World magazine yesterday, Charles! So well-deserved! 😎👍🏻
Thanks man!
Shouldn't they rename it "Bass World" for this occasion? :D

Expectation: Charles Will Have A Great Video
Reality: That's True
I’ve done a couple of diy tours. That “thanks for letting me sleep in your bathtub” bit really hit home.
It must be hard for Charles when he tries to interpret less experienced players. He is too high level hahaha
I just channel my 15-years-ago self 🤣
Every musician had a "1 year's progress" period at one point.
Mmmm... it doesn't comply with my sense of logic. It is much easier to play badly rather than expertly I'd guess.
However to mimic bad, inexperienced player trying the best he can may be challenging a little. Just in my mind popped those scenes from Ocean's (whatever number that was) when Julia Roberts plays Tess pretending to be Julia Roberts. Hilarious.
@@MrPzyt It's actually quite hard to perform badly when you got good, because most of it is muscle memory. (also why unlearning bad technique takes so much time) Your brain basically creates new pathways so it doesn't have to work as hard performing the same things over and over. That's not something you can just turn off at will. :)
@@TigSu Gimmie a sec. I'll try.
After few seconds, and bunch of terreble sounds:
Nope. I can play as badly as possible.
Edit: It does require a concious effort though.
I played a variety of gigs between 1995 and 2017. These included a cruise ship, lots and lots of country, praise, flashy chop oriented rock, classic rock gigs, jazz standards and more. I earned between $50 up to $500 a night. The highest paying gigs were the ones where I was playing almost nothing and the audience preferred to eat and talk with their friends rather than pay any attention to us. I will also mention that the highest paying gigs were usually the ones where I sang some harmony vocals.
"Click the link below and buy my course. It's only $500."
So f$%king true.
Im a musician and its hard for me to clap out of time without just clapping a subdivision or syncopation 😂
It's hard for me to not clap a polyrhythm. I literally quit a band because they wanted me to play some really godawful basic stuff on piano and I was thinking to myself, "if a f777ing sequencer can do my job, then why am I here?" I'm a pianist. It is almost impossible for me to not over-engineer my musical part.
Don't sperg shame me, pls.
In the bathroom stalls or in the concert halls?
I feel like this is targetted towards Scotts Bass Lessons lmao 3:34
Definitely making fun of SBL!
100 percent
SBL is in sufferable. So many better people on youtube to learn from.
Yeah it's gotta be
Camera zooms target towards Davie504 too.
You missed another calling as a comedian - this shit is absolute gold!
Disagree. He does exactly that.
That's why he's on here; to squeeze out that comedy when he's not practicing 40 hours a day. 😉
@@jnbplaysgames 40 hours a day? Charles is the new LingLing
Loved this. Guilty as charged for asking bass players to keep it simple in the studio. I'm sure I'm not alone.
Picked up the guitar a few months ago. The "year 1 progress reality" made me feel a lot better about my own progress lol
2:46 true about every instruments. Absolutely no chance to find love when you play piano bass guitar trumpet, whatever...
When he looked up and she was gone! That hit home, I felt that.
Find a partner that plays with you. I play bass, my wife plays guitar, and we're in the process of teaching our son drums :)
Do you know the song's name 2:46 please ?

_you spelled bass wrong_ [provides timestamp]
Funny, because "practicing" is spelled wrong. Twice!!😆😆
@@kobrien6657 Charles is British. That's how they spell it "across the pond".
@@levigoodwin3522 I know, but because he mentioned the spelling thing, I had to bring it up😁.
@@kobrien6657 Ah. Gotcha! Lol
3:15 That scene is so true. Could you do some more tutorials?
I think I'd need one, that doesn't show random playing, pretendending you can understand BASS in 20 minutes (and lets you guess notes by ear).
I felt that part in my soul. I’ve been playing almost 25 years, and there are times I click on a video to try to learn a new skill or to learn a different technique, and I can’t follow the players instruction.
Scott’s Bass Lessons UA-cam channel is great for tutorials
@@JoshuaWillis89 I’ve seen some of his, but I’m instantly turned off by anything that says ‘if you don’t know X you aren’t really a bass player.’ Since most of the time I don’t know the song or what ever, but I know the theory of it and can play it
@@JoshuaWillis89 no it is just a huge advertisement show with almost zero teaching. better go to talkingbass channel
@@JoshuaWillis89 I am quite sure that the bit in this video was a jab on Scott and his "tutorials".
“Finding love” was hilarious!!! 🤣
2:29 The way that Charles was staring was hilarious. I'm a bassist myself and I understand that pain so much.
The expectation is a live stage that looks like your bedroom from the crowd?!? 🤔
Legit!!!
🤩🤘
1:31 I'm dying XD
Final stringless bass had me wheezing
For me, the *_one-string_* bass @4:23 was funny but depressing. I also like how the girl just vanished when he started playing a bass. Nothing to even talk about! Ha.
The 1 year expectation really cracked me up. I definitely did not expect to be that good when I was at a year, and I'm at a year and 2/3rds (thanks to your inspiration to start and continue every day). I can tell there is a long road ahead of me but it will be a lot of fun getting there!
the rehearsals reality is the most real thing ever
"Still a little busy" 😂
Charles - you are THE best!!
I don’t think I have laughed louder or more consistently during any video I’ve ever watched on UA-cam. It’s hilarious because it’s all so true! You really captured it, Charles. Thanks for all you’re doing to keep us aspiring bass players sane and inspired.
Been playing for about 10 months so yeah my slap is exactly what he's shown, it's scary accurate
man I'm 1 year in and I feel personally attacked that was too accurate
Ditching midi bass and using a real bass for the first time:
Expectation: An upgraded version of that gnarly clanky rumble that you get in Djinnbass.
Reality: A sackless beginner tone mixed with the cacophony of fretbuzz and open strings ringing.
don't forget noticing after recording that it was slightly out of tune too
1:15 i like how he said shut up in beat
2:07 soooooooooo accurate
4:09 I NEED TO SEE THAT LINE WRITTEN IT'S SIMPLE BUT SO SICK
This is genius on so many levels!
This video is spot on! I especially enjoy the humor around what everyone else thinks of bass vs. what you as a player thinks. So very true.
Rehearsal was too accurate
That last one was brilliant. Well done.
That syncopated clap from the audience was off the charts brilliant!
You deserve much more recognition than every other bassist! I've just been going through your channel and I'm astonished!! KEEP IT UP 😀👍
" It's about the notes you don't play " 😭😂. So true.
Hey Charles, do you own an acoustic bass guitar and would you ever make a solo of epic proportions on it? Btw as always you got one of these 👍
Don't have an acoustic yet, the closest I have is the uke bass and there'll be a solo on that soon!
Thats a great idea
@@CharlesBerthoud are you keeping the original strings or are you replacing them with some of the less rubbery ones you can get?
@@CharlesBerthoud hell yeah, show us that uke love!
@@CharlesBerthoud :O If I was a luthier I would sponsor you with an acoustic bass.
The Charles interacting audience/drummer is just amazing!
“Can you play me something on your guitar?” That hits hard
I haven’t had a good laugh in a while. Loved the clapping and rehearsel bits.
The 1 year progress is actually…pretty accurate…EXTREMELY accurate
The UA-cam tutorial zooms were hilarious, great video
I would honestly love to see a real version of the tutorial (the 'expectation' version) - or even a recommendation for a good tutorial made by someone else. Other techniques are easy enough to practice, but slap is tricky, and I've never been able to get a grasp on it.
Usually I would never namedrop a channel on another video, but I’ll make an exception since you asked. The dude on the channel “talkingbass” covers everything from the ground up, note by note, in an easy to understand way without any of the “silly relatable” joke segments on ______’s bass lessons. He’s got a video for pretty much anything you could ask for and all his stuff is free. He sounds like what you’re looking for.
@@headsetsquirrel2581 Thank you, friend! I'll be sure to check it out :)
I definitely love the multi Charles video.
Almost a month into bass, super love it.
Great to hear that, what bass ya got 🤩
My choice to start playing bass, is over 95% influenced by charles berthoud. So i bought a lefay singer5, not cheap, but is a great farewell to my 20ish yrs on and off saxophone life... @@supersandwich8967
@@saxpeteah nice certainly not a cheap bass, well I wish you the best on your bass journey
You got me with those thunderous loud out-of-time claps! 😅😂
Thanks for the slap tutorial it really helped
Wow, thanks for playing my one year progress flea riff! You nailed it!
Honestly one of the best vids, love it hadn't laughed that hard and long for a while, you're an inspiration
Had me dying on the Audience Interaction 😂 Loved this!
So true. I used to take a nap during ' Oye Como Va ' while the guitar player soloed for 15 minutes.
The end is just perfect
Omg, you gave me a flashback to my touring days. I slept in the bathroom because I snored!
Huge humour content! You are the best UA-cam bassist.
As a bass player I can tell you your videos are always making me laugh and realise how good you are and how big is your adaptability to all situations / styles
Awesome content that put a big smile on my face. Thank you, Berthoud! 🔥🙏
That reality is always me haha! Great playing and humor as always man!
Love your work. I spent much longer being hopeless than you illustrate. I am one of those that moved to bass from guitar and tend to often play as if I am the guitar player.
Bass is my thing now and I can play in a way I never could get with guitar. Thanks for inspiring stuff.
Very good video!! the "Finding Love: Realty" part 😂😂😂
As a drummer sometimes I find it funny to clap off beat cause I'm on the worship team but some days I'm not cause it's full some weeks so I sit close to the stage clapping and ill clap a second early and throw my friend off and I think it's hilarious
Love the humor in the vids. The incredible bass talent certainly helps too.
1:35 At least the audience had fun 😂😂😂
1:02 is just so true.
I just keep thinking - where is Charles keeping all his clones when they don’t slave for the videos…
he just eats'em for dinner. And breakfast probably, guy has a cloning machine. Just recycle and make more

Loving this style of vid
2:47 nahhh I see a bassist and I’m already like 😍 once I met a guitarist, and we had something going on but I wasn’t that interested, and when I saw him improvising with a bass I was like “actually he is cute now”
Love your skits man - so funny! :)
Your vids are poppin off man. Incredible playing and great humour!
As a 20 years plus professional I have to admit this holds a lot of truth for every one in the industry.
Amazing as always! Our practise is me on bass and the drummer trying to keep the rhythm while guitarists are too exited or too drunk ✌️
Found you because a friend shared your Mad World cover on Facebook. Watched a couple more vids on your page which were also awesome and noticed you also seemed to have a sense of humor about you so I came to your YT channel and saw this was your most recent. It's great and funny too! Subbed man. You deserve way more than you have for sure.
That was great. Enjoyed that a lot.
OMG!! That was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long while. And it hurt a little at times because I have lived the realty WAY TOO MUCH. Keep it up, brother!
good job man, ty for sharing
Super fun. I like most audience expectations and UA-cam lesson. Sooo true.
charles good morning, I'm a great admirer of your videos, I've always played bass but at the moment I'm without but you can be sure that when I have the opportunity I want to study to try to get close to what you do... a big hug.
The audience interaction part; I expected him to be looking down at a candle on the table looking for a place to put the next empty glass. I worked a mixed event venue. Pulling a fire alarm would not clear it out faster than jazz night. Thursday evening is perfect for pressure washing the driveway.
Nice compilation!
ah haha!! Loved it!! Good stuff Charles!!
Footage from POLANDROCK, best festivial in Poland. I was there lot of times and i love it
Audience clapping at every moment where no clap could possibly fit the groove.
This is almost a documentary.
Charles, your sense of humour is exceeding my expectations! Thanks again!
Audience interaction is so true!
Jee man.... You are so spot-on... I have been through all of that for real... Than I quit hahaha... It was 15 year ago... 'Sad time' someone would say... But it is great to know that someone made it through all of that... Well done mate RESPECT
You and David 504 are make me feel that it was absolutely worth it to try...

The slapping and tapping were sublime, but that clapping gave me arrhythmia.
