It was beautiful. It almost made me cry.
Always!! Keep up the great Bass!!!

Btw, 2:51 was brilliant.
That was slapt
Losing count of how many characters in the Charles universe have died from bass battles or being too close to a funky solo.
They knew what they were signing up for...

... And You Will Know Charles By the Trail of the Dead
As a ex-teacher seeing a kid own like this would bring tears of joy to my heart. No teacher is ever annoyed when students do well.
Some teachers are, but they're not real teachers. Real teachers are like you and take pride in their students excelling.
Played rhythm/lead guitar in a band for years. Then we lost our bass player and couldn’t find another. So I volunteered. It took me almost a year to learn the discipline to ‘think’ bass and NOT play bass like it was the lead guitar. Gained a lot of respect for bass players and the bass line that leaves room for other musicians to contribute.
That's fast. Especially for a guitar player... I think, I never mastered that :) So, after about 15 years of bass I moved on for being the singer...
@@andreasrademacher5715 Indeed. Sounds like you were a bass player pretending to be a guitar player all along. Run with it. I have tinkered with guitar for literally 35 years. I picked up bass last year, and already am a better bass player than I was a guitar player. So many things now come naturally, that I had to force before.
Such a true statement here. Once you learn slap, everything becomes slap. Elevates everything to the extreme. 😂
oh thank you! too many people keep telling me slap is not music and things like "You just hit the strings randomly" or "you should do like Jaco".
@@olivierjacquet ignorance my man. People won't ever understand that there is nothing like being so dialed in and slapping a sick line that compliments the total grove. That's what gets the people dancing and vibin.
@@JamesDGarland nah... I don't like slapping that much, sounds always a bit like farts, no? But this video was quite funny.
@@hegelsmonster5521 lmao no but this made me laugh
@@olivierjacquet im a complete begginer in bass still, but doesn't slap still require you to hit the strings with precision while fretting AND muting vibrations? This doesn't seem really random to me
Charles and Victor Wooten: probably the two most proficient players I've ever heard. They could be labelled as "shred bassists".
What about ryan martinie
@@chancecherry6055 definitely!
The amount of constraint and holding back he does to serve the song better is astonishing but when he lets loose (like when he lets out seemingly random solos in certain songs live) he shows he's up there with the Goats as well. The fact they got back together and have been touring again (mostly festivals, but still) gives me hope that we'll get another awesome album in our near future!!!
I got a feeling "shredding" is called "slap" in the world of bass. :D
Claypool too, the main solo in the awakening is pretty shreddy
I am still trying to decide if your epic slap skills are motivating me to work harder on my slap game or if it is crushing my will to live the bass life. Either way, always great to watch and hear you play.
I'd rather motivate you 🔥
aww
Choose practice!
Never give up!
I feel you 100%, though Charles is also the only one that doesn't make me feel like a bad bassist.
I can’t tell you how accurate this is, I can’t play bass with a pick, my ear isn’t great but I can do some metal licks slap pop and the feeling of epiphany discovering slap is exactly that. Thanks Charles, you are easily on my top ten list.
2:50 i don't understand why she got so disapoointed when u asked her opinion about that bass line... i actually thought its pretty funky
🤣
she was just hoping for a simple fingerstyle bassline.
@@jedinxf7 no, she want tapping
Really expected her to say something like "oh cmon not again"😂
I expected her to slap him, love is a two way street.

I busted out laughing when he started playing higher ground cause it’s the exact song I started slapping with
Charles you've reached a new level of editing, this was brilliant
3:18 - I looked through the comments and how is it nobody even brought up playing bass on a bike? 😂🚲
As a B A S S ist I can confirm that's EXACTLY what happened when I heard Alik Granovsky's slap bass solo for the first time (and discovered slap)

Lolololol when he pulled out the box put on the pinky ring and goes “can you tell me what you think about this slap bass line?” …official best UA-cam bass meme instantly that was so goddamn funny
Wonderful!!😂😂😂
the power of SLAP...it's too much to handle
Davie504 handles it perfectly
Wow man, in 5 minutes you have become one of my top 3 favorite bassists. Impressive stuff man.
The pinky ring incident! That was the best thing ever!
Playing through the ad was a genius ploy - I respect that
I’ve seen many of your videos and they’re all amazing, but the playing in this one really hit me. Fantastic.
Producer: Asks for simple bass line
Charles: Plays “Classical Thump”
00:35 The moment where Davie504 spirit appears in the room.
2:28 facial expression from the lady is legendary
This is just Charles taking an opportunity to show off,
I’m glad he did it
That ring skit...GOLD!
He went from not knowing slap to mastering double thumb and stuff in seconds. He really is talented.
That reaction is soo true 😂
Watching you play always crushes my will to play but that makes me wanna play more
GIT-ER-DUN!
That tone is beauty
The power of bass fried the eggs!! So great. Do more like this Charles
Charles is not only a good bassist, he even good at comedy :)))
Punctuating the song from the bit with a nod to 'Seinfeld' was genius.
The day Slap Bass was invented was a good day for Mankind!
Yeah, and Ice cube said : "today was a good day"
👐🏾
@efe berkay köroğlu Ouuuuh Yeah!!!
And the day you were born, the average IQ of the mankind dropped drastically.
the day Larry Graham was born
Charles, I have a challenge for you. I’m completely blind, zero vision at all. I love the sound of slap bass and am only a lowly guitarist, so I have no idea how it’s done other than pulling on the strings like you’re going to shoot a rubber band at someone, which doesn’t seem possible to do so fast. Can you explain with words and sound alone how to play slap bass? I’m not a bassist. In fact, I can barely play guitar. This is not some covert, pathetic attempt at a free lesson, but I know enough about playing musical instruments to find the mechanics of it extremely interesting. Would you make a video explaining how to play slap bass, not free of visuals but such that visuals are not necessary to understand the explanation? assume that the listener already knows how to do a normal pluck on a guitar or bass. Thank you for your killer videos. Listening to you whack away at that bass so expertly never ceases to be absolutely thrilling!
This was me for the six months immediately following hearing Weekapaug Groove for the first time. Except, you know, he hits the right notes.
So Epic Charles What a Talented bassist that that has love for metal.
Next, when bassists discova tapp
Yeet!
Incredible as always hahahah
When he started the phrase " I'm a pretty busy guy " while playing, it felt like the lyrics of the song
Dougie Thomson, one of my favorite bassists, heard of slap bass. When asked if he ever used slap, he said something like, “I don’t know why people use slap bass. Bass is bass.”
This is not only music, but also comedy gold
Kudows for getting to a point where your stuff really is very original man.
I was just thinking about when you would post next and here you are!
I know this will be great
Probably the most accurate thing I’ve ever seen
Charles moving to the Higher Ground of bass.
Slapping is legit addicting at first, tore my thumb open the first day I discovered how to do it, all for the best, my hands have been shattered and reborn stronger through the power of bass.
The few seconds of a slap version of come together were incredible! Could we please get more slap/tap covers of simple classic songs???
3:11 was awesome
Buenísimo, Charles... Como siempre, deslumbrando con la técnica de slap
I'm kind of a beginner bassist(can't play anything like the intro, at least reliably) but I got so enthusiastic about slapp that I kind of had the basics down by my third month of bass lessons, it really is so hard to resist even when your skill level is pretty basic.
@ 00.34 seconds......The moment every student of David Buda looked up at him and was like, W.T.F?!!! [inside joke.]
As a drummer, I can't get enough bass videos from here to play along with. Keep up your OUTSTANDING funk / slap / groove playing. It soothes all our music souls.

Dude, this is freaking AMAZING, you're AMAZING!!!! The groovy lines between the solid rock-a-like feeling. I love this song!!!
How in the world does someone get so incredibly good at an instrument? It’s almost impossible to fathom. Nobody should be able to do what he just made look so incredibly easy. Looking through the comments for the hell of it one dude said he’s been playing for 35 years and he still can’t learn to slap. I believe it, I tried it once (even though I haven’t played for any significant amount of time) and it was a train wreck. I love that bass he has, the look and especially the sound of it.
The popular rule of thumb is it takes 10,000 hours of regular practice to become a world class master of a skill such as being a musician. So if you practice about three hours every day for 8 years, for instance, that’s around the level of work it takes to be really exceptional. Charles’ bio says he seriously started studying music about 10 years ago, so that timeline fits.
CHARLES YOU USED THE LA BEAST'S OVERCOMING ADVERSITY BACKGROUND MUSIC! I LOVE IT!
2:11 blew me away as well.
Professor Charles: "*What's the harm?*"
***Ooh boy*** We got the prequel to the show-off
Man this bassline is incredible! Can you make a full version of it?
Charles getting funky is his equivalent of Davie's holy slap
Both are equal.
I love how well controlled the slaps lightning power can be used to cook eggs or light candles without destroying anything, when on the other hand it just explodes slap haters ;)
3:00 Lmao
Like guitarists discovering pentatonic solos and drummers discovering fills
You're awesome dude!
Possibly a stupid question. I really love what you’re playing in your videos, however, in your records, you prefer more mellow and slow tunes. Basically, what artists/albums can you recommend if I really like what you’re playing in these videos? Basically a lot of bass solos and less vocals/trumpets/etc. Thank you!

Marcus Miller
That's one of his best works ✌️
This guy has so many alter egos its brilliant how do you keep coming up with these ideas
Bringing the pinky ring out during the romantic dinner is comedy GOLD.
It took many years to be interested in slap. I used to play Metal and this style has incorporated slap only recently.
"Not everything needs slap"
Let's agree to disagree
Bullshit
your videos are really rewatchable, love them
Loved the classical thump part!
Your bass playing is my idol… I have always wanted to play bass, but I play a lot of other orchestral instruments, so my parents said i have to wait another year to add one on. Just saying this is the instruments I play.
Acoustic Guitar, Piano, Violin, Cello, Flute, Clarinet, Swar Mandal, and Drums.
This is why I have to wait lol
The proposal segment was perfect!
Dude, you just keep getting more and more creative.
Please (as long as your mental health is not injured due to overworking) don't stop
Nothing sounds better than that twang of slap base. Once you figure out how to do it, it's amazing.
I hate you.. twenty one hours later and i still hear this riff in my head))
Hey Charles! Here in Brazil we have a ritm called CHORO ou CHORINHO. Its a really tecnic ritm and played whit a Brazilian instrument called CAVAQUINHO. Did you ever listened? We have some great musicians that will open your minds playing this melodies. Try this one

dude thats BADASS!!!!!!!!
Those one was an incredible gem of a video! The fake proposal was funny as hell!
Only just learned how to hammer and pull strings on my acoustic and Charles is there busting out a slap solo
It almost is just like that. When you discover something new. It's an awesome feeling
I haven't smiled so much all week
„That sounds amazing.“
I can not tell you how true this is! When I first learned how to slap and pop I used it in everything!!😂
Your videos never get boring, nice bro!
That "pop the question" part cracked me the hell up 😂
That shit is absolutly crazy. Your facilities - no more comment - are not from this earth. Your talents in humour and videotechnics are also tremendous. I love what you do and ...I can't find any more words about what you do. I desperatly love it and it's unachievebable. No one is better, period. Exsuses for the maybe poor english ....
Guy: "I'd just like something simple."
Charles: *Plays Classical Thump"
That first fingerstyle segment was so clean man.
THIS GUY IS JUST GREAT!!!.....THUMPS UP ALL THE TIME!!!
Every bass player has that low E slap riff they made when they first learned the technique lol.
This video made me listen to more and more, mooore bass solos
Slap - a well known technique involving pulling the strings out and letting them ping against the fretboard. Most commonly used when the guitarist and drums are drowning you out.
The holy grail of bassmanship!
I played bass for over a decade and that was way before the internet, no teacher, nothing. So, my approach was to be always as clean as possible. I didn't know bass players played with their fingers, so I took up a pick and trained myself to be as smooth as possible with it. No harsh sounds, no clack or much attack at all. The sound of hitting the frets to me was a sacrilege... I was a big Iron Maiden fan and thought Steve Harris is just sloppy... I would never have identified Mark Kings playing as bass guitar, just because I didn't know it could and was used like this. Later I looked down on slapping as "showing off" (of course also because I couldn't do it...), never liked the sound. With that mindset this clip is difficult to relate to. Later in my "career" I learned about it, needed to use it in bands, but never really got a good hold of it. But nowadays I can definitely appreciate what you are doing. It's mind blowing technically, but I'm absolutely stunned by the musicality you are showing with all your compositions and interpretations. In addition you have a great sense of humor and a nice personality, despite being the best out there. Keep it that way, you are amazing at playing bass guitar/music, but the latter makes you great.
This is surprisingly accurate
Because of you i See this fancy technique !i am a starter so i can not play this but i am working on IT.
You are absolutely, mind-blowingly, hands-down (and sideways and all over) the best bassist I've ever seen. One can tell your back-ground and where it all comes from. Davey 504 must be quaking in his boots, though he's also flipping amazing!
