    I remember I was showing my friend my bass. Of course he called it a “guitar”, so I corrected him kindly, but he just rolled his eyes and said “Same thing.”
    Luckily, I learned that basses are a good substitute for a sledgehammer.

    The struggle of someone setting your bass somewhere and you watching it fall in almost slow motion was too real 😭 I've had multiple basses broken that way and it hurts every time 🙃

      @@crnkmnky Lol, when I saw the notification I was a bit confused what I had said that resulted in that response. Until I noticed which video. Yes, it was a sad moment seeing a flute doing that final V sign while passing away.
      I did buy a new flute but never liked it - it was much harder for me to consistently and with a good tone reach the really low or high tones on the new flute. So it has collected dust for quite a number of years now.

      Yeah my friend set mine down against my bed after I told her to put it ON the bed so it would be soft and safe, but she put it on the floor and put the neck on the mattress, so it started falling and it hit the ground. Nothing broke, thank fucking god, but I yelled at her. That thing is expensive!

      @@CharlesBerthoud, I recently started playing bass. I know only how to do the melody line of that song 'cause there are only four notes😂. I can't imagine a bass version of that song so I thought that someone with godlike skills could make it something unique.
      (I don't know if I'm writing right, but I think it's understandable😂)

      @@literallythatone keep going, buddy! i started playing bass last year after playing guitar for 17 years. listening, thinking outside the box, noodling, looking at tutorials will make you grow. nowadays my bass playing style is much more full-sounding than just playing root notes. you've got the low range, make the band sound huge! do chords! arpeggios! walking basslines! small fills, even one slap in a dead beat makes a part pop out! but most importantly, and this is the biggest lesson i've ever learned. you ready?

      @@smithjohn383 Yeah, that’s how my friend is. She didn’t even know what I was talking about when I brought up bass, and thought I was talking about guitar. I tried to show her what bass was since she’d never heard of it. She then proceeded to say, “Why is it so low, it sounds weird.” She also called it bass (like the fish) 😕👍

    I like the new set of strings gag. The other night my son showed interest in his cello for the first time in years. One string was out of tune and I accidentally snapped it trying to tune it. Couldn't believe a full set of cello strings can go for over $100 AUD with some close to $300!

    This reminded me of the time an old head guitar player who hadn’t played in several years tried telling me about the “I IV V” progression. I ran through the major scale and told him I was already familiar. He then told me I was “wrong,” and demanded I hand him my bass and played off beat for five minutes with some other people around me. Sloppy roots and no groove the whole time. He then tried to give me the “you’re almost there” speech like I was to be amazed by him. Last time I ever handed anyone my instrument.

      Sounds like one of those beginners/amateurs who think that mastering an instrument is all about experience... and not about knowing your theory, practicing, knowing how to practice, ear training, etc. I once had someone like that say, "i've been playing for 20 years" then pick up his instrument and sound like a beginner. :) But yeah lol no one ever touches my instrument.

    I’d love to hear you do more classical music on the bass; your Mozart sonata sounded great in this video! I wonder if you could play some of Eric Whitacre’s music on the bass as well.

      That would be an interesting one. I’ve sung some of his music and listened to a lot else, and it doesn’t seem suited for bass to me. I’d love to see Charles have a go, though; he always makes stuff sound awesome!

    1:09 I relate with this so much. My main amp rig is a 1977 Peavey 412F Cabinet and I run it through a Peavey Musician 400. I keep the thing in mint condition. There was another band that was in need of a bass amp. That was the The first and last person I ever lent the amp to. When I got it back, the red crystal that sits on the front face snapped off and I’ve never found it. I vowed never to lend my Amp to anyone ever again.

    We used to boil bass strings back in the day. But I haven't changed the strings on my 1967 Epiphone bass since I bought it in 2003. I like the soft sound. Of course I don't slap like a madman like you! You're awesome! 👍👍👍👍

    I really felt the internal feeling of "The sight reader" now that I've played in a pit orchestra, everything about it is perfect from the lean in towards the music and the surprised expression all while you're just barely playing the right notes while trying to stay in time.

    Yeah, I'm totally guilty of the buying new strings thing. With an old household cleaning trick and some periodic EQ adjustment on my amp, my strings lasts for years or until I break one...😁

      i tossed my bass strings in the dishwasher. as stupid as it sounds, it actually worked without destroying either

      With old string still wound on the tuner, loosen and rotate string at the bridge. You will need two sets of pliers to do this. Rotate the string grommet maybe 1/2 to 3/4 turn so that the winding TIGHTENS up. Your string will have renewed brightness to the sound. Not sure about intonation though.

      @@Simplisti. take old grimy bass strings, throw them in the dishwasher. they'll sound fresher. rough to the touch, but it'll get rid of the gunk and grime in between the grooves of the roundwounds. made a set last 2 years like that. i'm poor

    DAMN! The buying new strings hit hard. I remember once having a band rehearsal and I broke my E-String so I went to the local music store and since I knew a single guitar string costs me like 2 dollars I thought that bass strings would be at the same price…
    Turned out that a Single Bass String Costs more than a whole set of guitar strings

      saxophonists pay between 35 and 50 dollars for a box of 10 reeds ( box of 5 for bari), so when i started learning bass i was relieved to find out that a 4 string set of roundwounds were like 19 bucks.

    The part about the amplifier is too accurate. My husband was forced to allow his sister's boyfriend to use his Peavy 5150 amp for a couple of months, and when he got it back, he was never able to get the exact tone again from the amp, since the dials were all fucked up.

      @@VixxKong2 I agree completely. However, my husband's family dynamic is really messed up. What's even more messed up, is that he had to demand it back. His parents and his sister weren't going to give it back willingly.

      Oh nah, if this was me I'd find it absolutely unacceptable. He should set boundaries up with them. Even family members need to respect personal property, especially when it's fragile expensive stuff.
      I hope they paid him back for the damages.

      @@VixxKong2 I fully agree with you about all of this. However, there were no "damages" to be compensated for.... And the relationship we have with his family is...... extremely..... *complicated*.... But I'm glad there are people out there that realize that stuff like this isn't okay, and I hope me telling my husband's story helps someone else in the future with learning to set healthy boundaries.

    Charles, you are my favorite bassist. You play bass with groove and skillfullness. That is what I like. For example, I know Victor Wooten is very skilled, but I can't like his bass playing, because it is so different and with many chords, but I always like what you play. Thanks for your videos

    Nice playing dude. I'm an orchestral tubist but relate to several of these. Especially how much I freak if I find someone touching my horn. And lol, the "exposure" thing. I just politely decline the gig now. Thankfully I don't get many requests for free gigs. I wish people understood how much work and study that it takes to play well enough to be respected by other professionals. It's really insulting to ask a professional to play for free.
