Hearing Layne wailing out “I live for you, but, I’m not alive.” Makes me shiver every time I hear it. So eerie after the fact. R.I.P to great singer and from the sounds of it, an even greater friend, If that’s possible.
you can see it during the Unplugged performance too, Jerry would look at Layne then look at the rest of the band and smile and you could tell he was thinking "Man, Layne's voice is fuckin God-like."
In an interview I read over a decade ago, that's exactly what he thought when he heard him sing under the shower. He then tried to get him into his band.
I am so grateful that we have access to this video 30 years later. To think this performance could have been lost to time is so saddening to me. This is the best live grunge performance of all time and quite possibly one of the best live performances period. Layne laid down better-than-record quality vocals and Jerry's guitar tone is incredible.
I often think of other awesome recorded performances that were lost or just not transferred digitally. Im grateful for the ones, like this one, that were. Those lost ones are probably in on a tape in someones attic somewhere.
It blows my mind that even when Layne was in the deep depths of addiction and depression that he would record songs in one or two takes and sound this incredible. That's SOOOOO hard to do. Some nights my heart aches extra for his passing, way too soon. Here in Western Washington it was a very melancholy day when we learned Layne passes on the Anniversary of Kurt Cobain's passing too. Brutal. I can't even imagine what those two would've done if they were still here making music.
I saw them on their first tour. We didn't even know what they look like cuz there was no pictures on the back of the album. Anyway I bought this disheveled looking dude a beer at the bar cuz he was looking in his pockets for money and pulled out lint. Then they came out and introduced Alice in Chains and the guy took off his trench coat and ran up on stage and f****** murdered that show with the beer I bought him in his hand. It was Layne Staley
They say that Layne's voice was so powerful that you could hear him singing over the music even without the mic if you were side stage or the front row.
[Verse 1] I tried to love you I thought I could I tried to own you I thought I would I want to peel the skin from your face Before the real you lays to waste [Verse 2] You told me I'm the only one Sweet little angel you should have run Lying, crying, dying to leave Innocence creates my hell [Verse 3] Cheating myself still you know more It would be so easy with a whore Try to understand me little girl My twisted passion to be your world [Verse 4] Lost inside my sick head I live for you but I'm not alive Take my hands before I kill I still love you, but, I still burn [Outro] Yeah, Love, hate, love [3x] Oooh, Love, hate, love Yeah, Love, hate, love
I discovered AIC this year, did some quick homework on the band's history and started listening to the first album. I've come to the conclusion that my man layne staley is on level with freddie mercury in terms of vocals power and pure emotion when they sing. this song is just pure art, rip to this man so sad he died young
Fuqn awesome. I thought the same thing about the kid from Silverchair (Daniel John?) at sixteen. I mean he's not Layne clearly but at such a young age to have a voice like that is unreal.
Angels are pure, they haven't experienced the pain and suffering we have gone through. Layne's voice is not pure, but that's what makes it amazing, that you can feel it.
@@creetan9997 - archangels are the Warriors of Heaven, they distribute and issue out the wrath of God, can't be too pure in that kind of business brother. After all it is their job to get their hands dirty....
Alice in Chains' "Love Hate Love" stands as a testament to the power of musical craftsmanship, weaving a complex tapestry of emotions through its instrumental and vocal arrangements. At its core lies the guitar's harmonic motif-a deceptively simple yet fiercely effective arpeggio of a minor ninth chord. This choice of chord, with its unique friction between notes, evokes a profound sense of discomfort and unease. It perfectly encapsulates the tumultuous battle between hope and disappointment, mirroring the human condition in its rawest form. The bass line follows in similar footsteps, marked by its simplicity and potency. The tonality of the first chord soars high, only to plummet more than an octave in the next, masterfully depicting the emotional collapse that follows disappointment. This musical motif is not just a background element but a narrative force, echoing the theme of falling from grace at pivotal moments throughout the song. Complementing these elements is the drum line-unobtrusive, staccato, and minimalistic. It creates an atmosphere of a world constricting in the wake of pain. The unpredictable rhythm prevents the listener from anticipating what comes next, stripping away any sense of emotional security or certainty. This clever use of rhythm further intensifies the song's overarching theme of turmoil and unpredictability. While critics often laud Layne Staley's vocal performance in this track, it's clear that the rest of the band has sculpted the perfect setting for his voice to shine. They have created not just a song, but a finely tuned emotional landscape. Layne's vocal mastery is undeniable. He navigates with ease the vast range between clear, melodic lines and powerful, screamed passages. His physical adaptation to each style of singing is a sight to behold, adding a visceral layer to the performance. This vocal dichotomy is thoughtfully chosen, reflecting the internal conflict between the pure hope of love and the burning anger of betrayal. These opposing emotions clash and intertwine throughout the song, reaching a zenith in the first chorus. Here, Layne recognizes that his innocence is the architect of his own hell. He holds the final note, steady and unwavering, before letting it plummet over an octave-a symbolic fall from a blissful, paradisiacal state. "Expectation is the root of all heartache" (Shakespear)
This is my first time I'm listening to this song. I went through old music on UA-cam and found this by chance. He has one of the most powerful voices I've ever heard.
I read that the song that they built Facelift around was I Can't Remember. He probably meant lyrically at the time that this was a great reflection of the band. Regardless they have no bad songs and the band had some of the most talented people.
This is the only live performance I've heard that was as good as Chris Cornell gig I seen..... two epic front men vocally.... so devastating that they both are gone
This is, without doubt, one of the top 3, 'i wish i had a time travel machine' performances that I wish I could go back and experience in the flesh. Just sublime.
Most powerful Alice I chains live performance of all time. Really showcases Layne's sheer intensity and incredible talent on a level that will never be able to be matched. Miss you buddy.
he was SOOO underrated as the vocalist, and im wondering all the time why people dont remember him as much as they remember Kurt (he was great too, no doubt, but Layne was better in vocals,so....)
1:33 - 2:00 and later at 3:07- 3:35 are some of the cleanest, twangiest, most proficient, perfectly smooth lines ive ever heard.....and to have such perfectly timed falsettos in those vocals and to do them perfect in studio is impressive, but to do them live is astounding
One of the best of AIC. I'm kinda angry that this song is so underrated but also secretly happy that it's not popular, so i feel that it belongs to me. I fucking miss Layne..
ZombieDeathRace Both sides are true. The choice to use or not for the first while is still within the user's control, even if difficult to decide against it. After a certain point, though--such as Layne's struggle--control is basically gone.
Kinda like chips you can't eat just one. Heroins so damn good once is never enough , that shits like a parasite the host can't live without. Most people don't realize they have an addiction until that day comes when they can't score and the withdrawals start then they realize how fucked they are. Then it becomes a daily cat n mouse game of get money, get drugs, get well, and repeat it's noway to live for sure.
R.I.P Layne. 30+ years later your vocals are still the best. The whole band is incredible. So powerful so many of us still listen. So sad. Just know your music still lives on.
What totally bamboozles me is I've read N heard singers, rock "afficianados", AIC tribute bands and a lot of magazine N book writers quote the following,..." Outta AIC,s back catalogue Man in the box is the hardest track to sing/ perform,!!?? I ain't no singer etc, but this right here is hands down one of THE best EVER performances of ANY BAND I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing IMHO
I’m a singer. I think this is a bit harder than man in the box just because of the technique involved. Both songs actually reach the same highest note, in man in the box that’s obv the FEEEED in the chorus, in this it’s the first YEAAAAHHHH after Cantrell’s solo. It’s hard to tell which song is more difficult, this song is demanding with the slow and deliberate manner the emotion is brought out, and man in the box is just straight fast paced belting out high 5th octave notes.
Hence we not forget Mike's bass line, Jerry's guitar riffs, Sean's amazing drums, and of course Layne's amazing vocals! Amazing song and band!! Miss this line up for sure. Rip Layne, and Mike! 🙏🙏💖💖

He had no idea of his presence or influence in music history . Or aware that he was the GOA. Rest easy sweet prince
Even his talking voice is beautiful. It sounds young, tired, but also powerful. Such a shame he didn't grow old
I’ll never forget the first time my daughter and I watched this together, she said to me “mummy, his voice is so good I have goosebumps on my face”.
Haha cute 😂
Game recognize game LOL
That says alot about your daughter
Great parenting honestly
That's what a voice is supposed to do! ☺
Birth name Layne Thomas Staley
Born August 22, 1967
Died April 5, 2002 (aged 34)
legend
he would have been 50 this summer--mind blowing
They are having a tribute concert for Layne's 50th at the Moore Theater! I hope Jerry and the guys show up.
This. Right. Here.
What's ironic for me is Layne and Kurt Cobain are 2 of my favorites , I love all the Seattle bands. Both died on April 5th and that's my Birthday.
April is the cruelest month
Hearing Layne wailing out “I live for you, but, I’m not alive.” Makes me shiver every time I hear it. So eerie after the fact. R.I.P to great singer and from the sounds of it, an even greater friend, If that’s possible.
I can’t imagine what jerry was thinking during this performance......”man I’m playing beside the best rock voice of all time”..... and Layne was.
you can see it during the Unplugged performance too, Jerry would look at Layne then look at the rest of the band and smile and you could tell he was thinking "Man, Layne's voice is fuckin God-like."
Yeah. I totally agree.
He still says, to this day, Layne's his favorite vocalist.
Jerry wrote this song for one voice. He knew.
I agree with every single word, Dustin. Best from Brazil!
absolutely! along with Sean Kinney's unique performance on drums. Stella!!
@@Sindollx666x Exactly, both Kurt and Layne are legends
Mandatory to rewatch this for the 200th time every week
I saw them on their first tour. We didn't even know what they look like cuz there was no pictures on the back of the album. Anyway I bought this disheveled looking dude a beer at the bar cuz he was looking in his pockets for money and pulled out lint. Then they came out and introduced Alice in Chains and the guy took off his trench coat and ran up on stage and f****** murdered that show with the beer I bought him in his hand. It was Layne Staley
Wait, seriously?
For real? Awesome if true
I salute you mate!!!
And then everyone clapped
@@k0n158 Obviously not.
Some of the most powerful rock vocals ever laid down on the breakdown of this track.

Still listening to Alice here in January 2025
@LuluMcRod62 grunge never dies
They say that Layne's voice was so powerful that you could hear him singing over the music even without the mic if you were side stage or the front row.
Damn!🤘🖤🤘🖤🤘🖤🤘
that's crazy, goddamn
I believe it…and to know he was such a modest, sweet, sensitive soul makes that even more amazing.
Yes that’s true he was louder than the speakers
A young Jerry Cantrell standing next to Layne, thinking, "I'm one of the best guitarists around, but this guy is SMOKING the vocals! Damn!"
Best of the 90’s, one of the best bands of all time. The end.
[Verse 1]
I tried to love you I thought I could
I tried to own you I thought I would
I want to peel the skin from your face
Before the real you lays to waste
[Verse 2]
You told me I'm the only one
Sweet little angel you should have run
Lying, crying, dying to leave
Innocence creates my hell
[Verse 3]
Cheating myself still you know more
It would be so easy with a whore
Try to understand me little girl
My twisted passion to be your world
[Verse 4]
Lost inside my sick head
I live for you but I'm not alive
Take my hands before I kill
I still love you, but, I still burn

Oooh, Love, hate, love
Yeah, Love, hate, love
Nobody comes close to layne one of a kind r.i.p layne
Our Layne...

I discovered AIC this year, did some quick homework on the band's history and started listening to the first album. I've come to the conclusion that my man layne staley is on level with freddie mercury in terms of vocals power and pure emotion when they sing. this song is just pure art, rip to this man so sad he died young
With all
Due respect... “Staley”
You must be young. This band originated in the 80's. Layne died in like 2002. One of the best rock bands and voices of all time.

What a voice from a 23-year old kid. Jesus.
Oh yeah, no doubt. Greatest rock voice of all time, in my opinion.

If I could imagine what an archangel would sound like fronting a band, it would be Mr. Staley.
Well said friend
Angels are pure, they haven't experienced the pain and suffering we have gone through. Layne's voice is not pure, but that's what makes it amazing, that you can feel it.

Beautiful.
This is my first time I'm listening to this song. I went through old music on UA-cam and found this by chance. He has one of the most powerful voices I've ever heard.
Jerry is a monster on that guitar and Layne is a literal God with the vocal range
Vocal range is just a part of it, the potency and the emotions he poured plus the control and other stuff i am ignorant about.
Also sean is a beast and Mike a masterpiece
“This next song is about pain”… Layne knew what was coming and sang the best song of his life…just laid it all out there
i must have watched this hundreds of times and never gets old

Its ok....because we're still here 😉
I love that Jerry said that this was the first song that was truly of the Alice in Chains sound.
It better be since it's their best song 😂
I read that the song that they built Facelift around was I Can't Remember. He probably meant lyrically at the time that this was a great reflection of the band. Regardless they have no bad songs and the band had some of the most talented people.

One of the best of AIC. I'm kinda angry that this song is so underrated but also secretly happy that it's not popular, so i feel that it belongs to me. I fucking miss Layne..

Layne is obviously incredible, but that guitar work is right there too
4:44 This is so epic! I doubt Layne really realized just how good he was.
Good Lord this man had pipes. One of those bands that sounds even better live.
