The Museum of Pop Culture's one-night-only annual benefit event streamed for FREE on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 with an unforgettable performance from Seattle's own Alice In Chains, plus an acclaimed lineup of tribute artists who put their own spin on some of the band's most iconic songs.
The Founders Award event serves as the nonprofit museum’s principal annual fundraiser for youth development programs, access initiatives, community engagement, and world-class exhibitions.

This year’s celebration featured performances by award recipients Alice In Chains, as well as tribute performances from Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction), Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins), Dallas Green (City and Colour), Fishbone, Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters), KORN, Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Mad Season), Ann Wilson, Duff McKagan (Guns n’ Roses), Mastodon, Metallica, Dave Navarro, Krist Novoselic (Nirvana, Giants in the Trees), Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Kim Thayil (Soundgarden), Nancy Wilson, and the debut musical performance of Lily Cornell Silver (daughter of Chris Cornell and Susan Silver), among many others. The event also featured appearances from members of Pearl Jam, Sammy Hagar, Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave), Les Claypool, Robert Downey Jr., and many more.
The event also included appearances by artists from MoPOP’s 21-and-under music showcase and competition Sound Off!, including Katyrose Jordan, The Human Missile Crisis, David’s Van, and Talaya.

This is one of my favorite Alice in Chains covers because they didn't try to imitate Layne, they played to their own strengths. However, they got very close to Layne's tone and timbre in the "yeahs" and "ahhs" where it's really needed in this song.
That was mostly brent, layne and brent have a similar way of singing

The self titled AiC album is criminally under rated, Head Creeps is one of AiC's best songs and no one ever talks about it.

You're absolutely right, that album is one of my favorites, and it's so dark. Love it, from sludge factory, head creeps, to frogs that album has magic on it.
Initially, I was one of those guys who couldn't understand the "Alice in Chains" album enough and so couldn't appreciate the work except its hits ("Again", "Heaven Beside You" etc...). But now I feel that even if it's not their best because of the youthful energy and power of "Dirt", yet it is by far their most mature and intense album I think. It's also difficult to get into because the pain in the album - Layne's pain - so real that one can feel directly and affected by the mood. To be honest, it got quite a time for me to listen the album over and over since it reminds me a lot the death of Layne and the tragedies he suffered.
Once Warrel Dane made a comment on the Nevermore album "Dreaming Neon Black", like ; "I ripped off my heart and put it into a CD". I think, for Layne's part this album is "Alice in Chains", and it seems that he made us feel this situation in the album... So sad, indeed.
Anyway, "Head Creeps" is really the one of the highlights from that album. Good choice!
My favorite off that album was God Am. Totally agree with you about that album. I feel like it was their darkest album, even more so than Dirt.

All except for Brann's best Layne impersonation in the outro "yeah"s. They took 98% of this cover seriously, but they couldn't help but throw those in, the goofballs that they are
Those "yeaaah"s in the outro almost had me think they'd sampled Mr Staley's voice.
The best covers in my opinion are the ones where they respect the source, but put their own stink on it. They didn't deviate too much from the original musically (hard to when Cantrell makes riffs like these), but the mastodon vocals were an awesome touch

Yeah they stayed true enough to the original but def put their own spin on it. Nice touch on that. I absolutely hate it when a band massacres a great song just for the sake of a cover. This is great though!

Always has been. He's so much like EVH in that while he writes/plays some great riffs and solos, his rhythm playing has been overlooked.

He is severely overlooked because he is like Toni Iommi in the sense that they are masters of simplicity. Effectiveness over complexity at all times. They are extremely good guitarists and very similar.

Alice got me through stage 4 brain cancer on two occasions, and to cover them is so "encroaching".........(but these dudes felt this song rather than playing it.........and holy SHAT what a good job......thank you for bringing Layne back alive for (at least 4 minutes and 29 seconds)

I am not a Mastodon fan... but an AIC fan. This cover is a masterpiece. Magistrally executed... and, the most important, perfectly well focused. This song is one of the best of this AIC album. I am sure Cantrell'n'co would be proud of it.

I grew up on Alice In Chains and then I found Mastodon years later. Love both bands and this cover was so good. They not only did the sound justice, but they added their signature sound to it. Nice work boys. Layne would be proud

He actually has his own custom Friedman amp. It's called Butterslax, based on an old band he was in.

@@tommythompson5939 You misunderstand the whole thing. Kurtis said he was using Jerry's amp. Jerry's amp is different than Bill's and isn't necessarily based on Jerry because we don't know if Jerry is using other equipment to get his sound, such as a preamp and/or pedals. Jerry's amp sounded cool to Bill and Bill just wanted to use the same company. That's it.

And while Dirt started out as my fav. between the 2 of them (after they both existed), I did come to appreciate Facelift more later on than I had previously. I think maybe after I hit my 1st phase of revisiting & bangin 80's metal & rock again👅🤘😁 What can I say, that was the first music I was turned on by as a wee young kid, so it'll alwayz have a place in my heart 😉 But anyway ...

This was one of my favourite covers from the show. These guys nailed it, the combination of metal and funk that was and is Alice. Fishbone were the other band, I'd pay to see do a gig of Alice covers.

Like how so many of their contemporaries have paid homage to AIC. Also shows how unique and difficult Layne and Jerry’s vocal harmonies were integral and a key highlight of their sound. Throw in Jerry’s de-tuned guitar riffs and one of the best rhythm sections in the business with Sean Kinney and the two Mikes. Love how Mastodon kept faithful to the original, would love to see AIC cover Mastodon.
I think AIC could do Roots Remain from Emporer Of Sand album. Bill Kelliher wrote the lyrics about his mother's passing from cancer. If you hadn't heard it, listen to it and please let me know if you agree.

Man im from Atlanta and raising children just made me only discover this band about 3 years ago. Love em. When I saw they were covering an AIC song my first thought was."bad idea". Layne would have loved it. Awesome. These guys might not be everyone's cup of tea, but no one can argue all of them are MONSTER musicians. True supergroup.

I still remember being blown away by this song when the album first came out. The "do do. Yeah" part especially blew my mind. Lol. I love it.
I love how progressive these guys are and how involved each member is in their music. These guys are true artists and they always know how to kill it. I saw them live back in 2009, that sure was one of the most memorable shows of my life. Oblivion, Red Baron, Stargazer, Colony of Birchmen, Sleeping Giant, Seabeast, Iron Tusk, Remission, March of The Fire Ants, and Trainwreck were all performed live, with short bass and drum solos to fill in. These guys are legends of the stage.
Loved how Tom Morello talked about his friendly rivalry with Layne Staley about who was more metal, and then they cut to Mastodon with this fire cover of an already awesome, crunching song.

That was awesome. "Again" is one of those songs which shouldn't work but it totally does. Mastodon smashed it. I've never listened to their shit, so I don't know what they're normally like, but they did a great job with this track. Five stars from me.
