    Great video,and a very nice shop! only things I'd do different is,I prefer to run the fuel hose and electrical thru a small hole with grommet,to the inside of the frame where I the stock lines are,it's better protected from the front tires throwing ice chunks and rocks at the fuel line.Also 1/8 off the tank bottom is cutting it close,especially since you didn't notch the pickup or put a strainer on it..we plow snow hard with these trucks and occasionally frame hang them in snow piles ,that would be enough pressure to push the tank bottom into the draw straw,killing the fuel...

      This would probably be the better solution in your situation assuming that wouldn't know the sump off while plowing.

    You don't need pipe dope or teflon tape when using JIC or AN type fittings. Just on the npt side.

    • @andrewhammes1183
      @andrewhammes1183 8 місяців тому +1

      I agree, no dope on those fittings but if it is kept to just the threads and not the beveled sealing surface then it is somewhat acceptable. Dope contains grit which can keep the surfaces from making full contact

    A very good video! I know these videos are hard to make, and things do get forgotten about. So I would like to add a couple of things here, for those who may happen across my comment, and for Thoroughbred Diesel to include in future videos (which it may have by now, as this is an older video)
    First, before you start routing the fuel line, blow through it good with compressed air. Then, before routing it through it's path on the way to the injection pump, put a piece of wide tape over the end if it. Keeping any dirt or dust from getting inside. I know we saw a quick priming of the system here, into a gallon jug, and that is good. But let's not forget that the final filter here is 2 microns. I recommend a much longer run of the fuel (lift) pump, before making the connection to the injection pump. These injectors do not like dirt! : - )

    M. Sev. There is a fuel grade pipe dope that we use, Permatex thread sealant with PTFE, p/n 80632. There also is a blade fuse on the power side of the battery, I cant remember if I showed that in the video. If you have a pump problem that’s always the first place you look. Either product you go with you wont be disappointed. Use Permatex 14d thread sealant is diesel fuel resistant. There is a inline fuse in the key on powers source or trigger wire. It is a blade type.

    If anyone wants to DIY a sump option it's fairly easy and cheap. A bulkhead fitting with at least 1/2" fittings can be used to go through top of tank. That's basically a threaded hollow fitting with rubber gaskets and sandwiches the plastic of tank. Then just use basic NPT brass fittings to connect hose for supply. The inside pickup tube can use a NPT to compression 1/2" aluminum tube etc cut to proper length to reach 3/8" off bottom of tank. Good idea to cut slots in bottom of tube just in case. I'm not a fan of a sump on the bottom of tank that can get hit by something and ripped off.

Well I disconnected the 2 fuel lines coming from the fuel tank, both have a rubber hose on the end. Can you tell me specifically where these hoses connect? The dope you use, is it for petroleum products? I ask because I didn't know of buying tape for propane until I needed to do some hose connection to a 100 pound tank for my rv for year round use. Just asking as some may not know this and can't just use plumbing tape. Another surprise is there isn't a small in-line blade fuse for the power to the pump in case of surges from battery. Will have to look to see if any installs for 2010 or close. Definitely this product will be a purchase for future for my truck. Now to figure out which one to buy.

      Carter lift pump spec is 3' of line from the tank to filter... why dodge and ALL the medium duty manufacturers do not follow this requirement, is beyond me. I guess it is cheaper to just use what cummins provided( except the instructions ) and skip the required 2nd lift pump within 3' of the tank. As seen here dodge 1 uped the big dogs with the retrofit in tank pump.
      I've had to change out the lift pump on a 32k lb GVWR 05 Fraightlinner bread truck / fed ex , due to cavitation damage reducing supply pressure. it is 28' from the lift pump to the tank and 18" vertical . So at 1/2 tank it could no longer prim the filter after a change out. THE ROOSTER IS ALWAYS THE PRIBLEM.

    basket with a strainer of which clogs up with dirt or stuff from a fuel station.

    Hey. On my 02 my lift pump is on the block. I guess I do not need to do anything to the tank (draw straw) ?
    Also just buying fass lift pump is the same but without filters?

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  8 років тому

      +Mr. Dozer That is a good question. I would make sure 100% that you don’t also have a lift pump in the tank. There is not SUPPOSED to be, but someone may have got lazy and converted it to in tank and pushed through the one on the block. I have seen this done several times. Easiest way to check is have someone bump the starter on the truck and you listen back in the tank area and make sure you don’t hear a pump in the tank. FASS is actually a brand, they offer pumps with or without filters, its according to what you want for your truck! Let us know if we can be of any help.

    @thoroughbred So if my truck has not been retrofitted and I am going to run a 150 then I do not need to drop tank to add a draw straw? Also, if I went to a sump then how would I run my return line?

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  6 років тому

      The 150 (165 now) kits do not come with a draw straw. They draw from the stock unit. If you do a sump, your FASS return will still return to the filler neck with a manifold that comes in the FASS kit. We also sell a sump by G&R Diesel that has a return port for your lift pump and you do not have to cut the filler neck.

    About to do install a 165gph FASS on my 2002 truck - What do you do with the stock fuel filter housing? It looks like you unplugged the line from the VP, but left that line connected to the stock fuel filter housing. If I'm doing this from scratch should I run it directly to the VP as you've done here, or run a big line kit from the stock fuel filter to the VP, and the FASS to the stock fuel filter? Also curious what I should do with the FASS DDRP that is worn out that I'm upgrading from. Simple unplug? Take it off the block completely?

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  2 роки тому +1

      If you are doing a FASS with filters kit, then you bypass the stock fuel filter and run your line directly to the VP. Then the stock housing can be removed. Also, the DDRP is bypassed and you can do whatever you want with it. Take it off and clean the engine bay up for sure. I took one and made a pretty nice transfer pump for an in bed tank to us to fill up tractors.

    Ok we'll my truck is a 2001 and i recently replaced my battery cable connections and I hooked everything back up like it was when I bought the truck, I have a green wire going to my negative side of the battery and there is a red wire running to the positive and I know there is a fuse also. And i don't remember it constantly running when I first bought the truck. All I ever heard it do was come on for a short time right when I would first turn my key on before starting the truck. So I'm needing some help on figuring out what is going on, and is it a bad thing that the pump is always running while the truck is on ? FYI the color of the fass pump I have is red. I think it's an older model possibly.

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  9 років тому

      Has anything changed? Has anyone worked on the truck that could have possibly cut the trigger wire and moved it to a key on power source. The wires on your battery are your constant power wires. Check your FASS relay and make sure it’s not a relay problem. No it will not hurt your pump to run while the keys on per say, but if you have an accident and the pump is running with the key off it would not be a good thing. This issue needs to be addressed.

    The New wiring harness on the Signature Titanium pump does not connect to the original wiring harness going to the ECM like the setup on your video. It connects directly to the battery and fuse box. This requires that I leave the old Carter pump disconnected which causes a check engine light code P0230. It comes and goes, but never seems to go away cause the ECM is always looking for a connection. Is there a way to get rid of this annoying code?

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  4 роки тому +2

      Good question and you are correct on the new wiring of the harness, the trigger wire now goes to a key on source. Not all trucks trip the SES light for the lift pump connection, but if yours does, what it is looking for is a ground. On the pigtail that supplies power to the block mounted lift pump, find the ground wire and just splice into it and run it to a chassis ground. No more light. If you need anything just let us know.

      The ECM signal or trigger wire will regulate the lift pump on time. So as long as its hooked up the the ECM connection and not just a straight key on connection.

    Hi Thoroughbred Diesel. I've been looking into getting the FASS titanium 95 gph or the 150gph for my 03 24 valve. I'm leaning more towards 95gph. I went out tonight and turned my key over and went and listened at the tank, where I heard a hum. I'm assuming that means that my particular truck has been retrofitted with a pump in the tank, and I'll have to get the 04.4-07 kit, or else get the draw straw and sump when I get the pump itself.

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  6 років тому

      That is correct. I would check on the back of your fuel filter to make sure 100% that you do not have the pump still on the back of the filter housing.

    • @TheRealJesseStoltzfus
      @TheRealJesseStoltzfus 6 років тому

      Thoroughbred Diesel I went out and looked this morning, but I did not see that block down there. Just the two fuel lines running to the fuel filter.

    • @TheRealJesseStoltzfus
      @TheRealJesseStoltzfus 6 років тому

      I guess I'll amend my previous comment above. I did a closer in depth look, and there is no aluminum block like there should be for the pump in tank, but there is also no lift pump either.

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  6 років тому

      On the 03 to some 04.5 trucks, the lift pump is actually on the back of the fuel filter. So there would be a maybe 2” cylinder on the back of the fuel filter housing that has a fuel line running to the bottom of it. If it has been retrofitted to the LP in the tank, there will now be an aluminum block on the back of the fuel filter with a fuel line going directly into it.

      I said 11 7/8ths and its been so long ago I don’t remember the number off the top of my head. The length is relative to where you place the straw and how much space you want with the bottom of the tank. Cutting it long and adjusting is a lot better than cutting it short for sure!

    @thoroughbred i have a 02 Cummins 3500 5.9 it doesn’t have an intank pump, but it has a electric pump replacement. I believe it is an airtrax pump. So when i install this, do i need to remove the electric pump or just leave it hanging? And another question, i see you had the fass pump for the block mounted pump, but you are using it for the intank pump. Are the fass pumps for block and intank pump reversible to use for either, as long as you just get the draw straw? I hope this makes since.

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  4 роки тому +1

      If you purchase a full FASS or Airdog system that routes to the VP, you will just bypass your block mounted pump. You can totally just leave it hanging on the engine if you choose. If you choose to do a FASS block mounted pump, you cannot have an intank pump at the same times as it causes a restriction. Also, if you use the block mounted FASS pump, you really would have to create your own fuel lines from the draw straw to the FASS DDRP, if that makes sense.
