I ran a separate relay to power the Holley Blue, and power the coil of the relay via stock fuel feed. Coil draw is only milliamperes, pump pressurizes off key switch now.
After a few months of running with this wiring setup, it appears as though it's having a hard start issue. Caused by the high fuel pressure at startup So I rewired it to a switch that only is active after the engine has been started. Low pressure on startup and back to 20 psi after the engine is running. Problem solved.
Good morning .. Nice Vid. I have a 99 that I have owned since 2000. Like you I was seeing a loss of pressure.on my fuel system. After changing the stock pump at the engine several times. I relocated the stock carter pump to the frame rail like you did with the holly blue. I still had lift pump failures but the failures were extended to about every 2 years. Vulcan performance out of Vancouver has a frame rail pump relocation kit . I tried the Fass but it failed in 3 months and fass left me on the side of the road for a week till they were able to get a replacement coming . I got tired of waiting so I brought a stock replacement and re plumbed a old spare stock replacement at the frame rail. If you go back to the stock pump... go to Cummins direct and buy from them much much cheaper! Nice 3500!
I have an 02, When I bought it the dealer at some point changed the carter for a pump in the tank. It worked but not exceptional at all, all I did is buy the OEM carter pump and put it back on the engine and left the tank pump hooked up. Essentially the same as here but easier. I have 15-18 lbs at idle and have never seen it go below 8-9 lbs hauling my 36 ft RV up hills and anywhere you want to go.
Really great video on lift pumps. I have a 2002 FS65 bus with a 5.9/24v/vp44. I need dependability with simple repairs. The Hooly blue is definitely the answer here. Just having tandem lift pumps is absolutely reassuring.
I should have never had looked at you tube. Had a 47re transmission problem. That is fixed. Thanks you tube. 2002 with 373k. No fuel pressure gage. Original lift pump. Original vp44 pump. Completely stock . Runs great. Only regular maintenance. Just got a leak on lifterblock cover/ cam cover plate or whatever they call it. Vacuum pump also leaking. Going to fix and thought about changing some fuel related things while I have it apart. Mainly lift pump and the horror stories on you tube are enough to make me lose sleep and wonder when my truck is going to leave me stranded. Think I will sell it and go electric
Just wanted to let you know I did the same mod after watching your video, so thanks for that! I did mount the regulator that came with it, I have 18 at idle and 16 WOT now

Okay I did it, currently trucks not starting anymore. I only have the red wire hooked up to the fuel pump relay, it didn’t come with a relay, the pump is on when I turn my key and it’s loud so I’ll have to make it work only when I’m cranking, so far 2/5 stars. Keep getting air in the line
Interested in how long this has lasted because I have always been told to keep between 15 to 20 psi of fuel pressure to the VP. Is your truck modded in any way like injectors turbo and tune? I run mine at 18 and have 120 injectors and I feel like I can bump it to 20 psi so just curious if this has lasted you a fair bit of time thanks
Great video, good explanations of what you did and the logic behind what you did!! What brand and model are your gauges. They look sweet! Thx! Nm, I was able to pause at a one point and saw they are Glow Shift.
Ok great idea. Not sure if holleys are diesel fuel compatible? Also its best to use the band type clamps for long term use they don't cut into the hose and loosen with time like the ones you are using. if your going to use a filter on the inlet make it more of a screen type just to get the stuff that may lock up the pump. electric pumps push well but don't pull well at all. use a second finer filter after the pump. Also always use a relay and carry a spare.
I added the Holly Blue about 2 yrs ago but I used the pressure regulator and set it at 15# that is recommended for the 2nd gen, works good. (I have a in tank pump that was getting weak)
Eoghan Jordan I still use my in tank pump( it was reading 10lbs or a little less at idle) and with the Holly Blue you adjust your pressure to 15 1/2 lbs as dodge recommends . I put a inline filter in before the Holly and everything works fine. The Holly is used as a inline booster pump not as the main pump. I did replace the intank 5 years ago it was just getting a little weak and I didn’t want to drop the tank again.
PSA. The VP44 is not designed to be operated above 20psi. I ran mine for almost 11 years (about 60k miles) between 16psi idle and 24psi at around 2000rpm. It finally blew out the front seal, fuel in oil and a nice coating of fuel under the truck.
I did virtually the same thing. Mounted a Holley blue on the frame just in front of the tank and left the stock carter pump in place and ran both together but I had a dedicated ignition on power source so when the key was on the Holley was on. ( noisy pump) but It makes more sense to have both run together only when the engine is running or with a bump start. Any way the Holley went south in a couple years and the stock pump can’t draw fuel thru the Holley so a emergency bypass if needed would help. It left me stuck so I crawled under and removed the bottom plate on the Holley and removed the rotor assembly so fuel would pass thru and put the plate back on. Due to stock pump now going bad I’m glad I had bought a second Holley blue couple years ago and stashed it so I’m putting it to use.
I did the same thing but it'd a holly black pump mounted it on rail to a toggle and with both running its burying my fuel pressure gauge at 30psi with both I unplugged the factory lift pump and ran just to holly only makes 14psi and on a hard pull runs out of fuel my truck is stock besides a 4" turbo back exhaust and a small power puck programmer
Okay so I got it figured out! So I found that the ECM wasn’t getting power for some reason, disconnected the battery and tried again boom now everything works starts great 25psi at idle, I might have done something to freeze the ECM to prevent it from getting power, not sure, weird

Because I saw in the box is not for sale in California but I'm assuming if the truck still working without the external pump on, you can turn it off before take it to smog station right...? 20 psi is Max on a VP so if you regulate it down to 20 the truck will actually start better mine lives and 20 all the time fires right up And excessive pressure can kill a VP just as quickly asno fuel pressure
@@floridafenceland1137 hi excuse me to disturb you, Im not in US but I have the same truck, I would like to know why do you put a switch and press on the switch , because for me if you put this pump instead oem you dont have to need to put switch, it works perfectly? Thank you in advance
Correct, I believe in the video I say that I wasn’t sure if my Ecm was working and actually telling my old pump to kick on, so I ran both pumps to same switch to ensure that they do come on because I’m the one pushing the button
I didn't understand why you couldn't hook up the originals power wires. You went from the battery to the new pump. You also said some thing about not having the water trap with this mod. Will that hurt anything? I thinks you should tell the factory about this, sounds like a great idea to me.
So at the time, I was unsure if my Ecm was working properly and telling my factor pump to come on so that is why I by passed it, but now I do feel like I could trust my ecm and I could wire it up and have it all be factory
@@floridafenceland1137. Thanks, I believe you could put some of these high priced pumps companies out of bussiness. You my friend should be working for Dodge. You can find me on UA-cam (Merry Christmas Elvis by James McQueen).
Thank you man! And on these particular engines they need above 14 psi of fuel pressure to keep the injection pump cool, and lubricated otherwise the pump will fail
So can I clarify. You have the holley running to the stock pump and stock pump to engine? Then does the manual switch power both pumps or just the holley? And it just stays on all the time?
Sooo..... You are unsure if your stock lift pump is still putting anything out? What set up do you have for stocker? engine mounted or in tank? I'm just weighing options at the moment. Is the holley still going strong?
Mine was engine mounted, and reading 8-12 psi I added the Holley to run with the stock pump and I as at 25psi I still recommend the Holley for these trucks still running good after 3 years
I am curious about this as my understanding is the after 21 psi the vp44 stops working. I have had experience with this. I was using an airdog 150 at the time and put a 30 psi spring in, and it started and ran great, but i stopped for fuel and i could not get the truck to restart at the gas station i had to disconnect the fuel line at the gas station and swap the spring back and it started right up. Does anyone know the limitations of these 44's? right now i run 21 psi at idle and hold strong at 18-20 while cruising on my 4gII 160 airdog.
You also removed a screen that would slow down fuel flow to the pump, the more fuel to enter the pump in theory the more pressure it can produce. Maybe that is why it was much higher then what it said. Just my two cents.@@floridafenceland1137
I'm a little late to the party. did you ever make it to the fass? how long did the Holley last i need a lift pump for a 3rd gen and don't want to spend big bucks
Still running my Holley man! The pump Died after 1 year, went to advance auto, picked up another, returned the old one and I’m still going strong on my second pump and no extra money spent!
Yep dosnt give the fuel enough time to pull the heat from the pump. Since fuel is what cools the pump/computer board. Computer will run hotter shortening its life. At least that's my understanding.
I don't understand why people is going to a airdog or any aftermarket lift pump my truck has been converted to the in tank Lift pump it's been in there since 2003 and at idle I am holding it like 22 PSI I've never had any problem with my in tank system I guess because mine's all stock
I also have the in tank pump which was dodge replacements fix for a lot of block mounted lift pump failure.my truck is stock I have a 01 with only the in tank pump. What confuses me is can I run both in tank pump and a add a another either in the factory location on the block or in frame rail next to tank. Or eliminate in tank pump altogether. I'm seeing 7psi at idle and below 5 psi normal driving. 0 wot. Any advice would help. Thanks
@@floridafenceland1137 thanks for the fast response. I'm definitely gonna look in getting this pump seems easy enough to do. Have you had any issues with it since the install? Also is the regulator that comes with the pump look like it's adjustable?
Eduardo Silva no prob man! And it’s very easy, the only issue I had was the original pump died after one year, and I went an bought a new one, returned the old on under warranty and got my money back, had the truck back running in 30 mins but besides that the second pump is running exactly the same and running strong
@@floridafenceland1137 that was the main problems with these trucks. The stock lift pump eventually grew weaker and weaker but the engine still ran normal. The VP44 was getting starved of fuel so it would break down leaving you stranded and a $2000 fix. You wre right to address it when you did. I bought a '99 Cummins Ram that ran normal with the stock lift pump 12psi. I switched to the DDRP02 pump and now getting 20psi @ idle and 14psi WOT.
Yes same setup! An it’s designed for gas but it’s been working fine for diesel, I’ve changed the pump once after a year and second one running just fine
August 2019 How is it holding up? Any issues at all? Any changes? Switching my pump, filter, VP44, injectors all out. (leaving the stock filter as a secondary filter) Just curious about your holley set up. Thx for sharing.
Okay so, August 2019, I’ve changed the pump once a few months ago, had no warranty left since it’s a short warranty so I bought a brand new one had it switched out in 10 mins and been great ever since, since the warranty is only 60 days, I put the old pump in the box and returned it defective and got my money back so I’m still happy with the setup still works fine! Still 25psi at idle, no issues with vp44

Yes sir sorry it took so long to reply and I installed it about 2 weeks before the video was posted so I’ve had it since then and no issues at all and I tow about 14k pounds at least once a week and never had any issues
Do you think running just the blue with no stock pump at all ( with block off plate ) would still provide the same pressures as you said in your description under the video?
@@floridafenceland1137 There is a block off plate where my lifter pump was! I just bought a 94 12 valve with a Bosch P-pump a few days ago and the seller told me I needed to buy an external lift pump for it
Ahhh I see so I may be wrong but I believe a p pump truck needs to have more fuel pressure than a vp44 truck like mine, I would look into that, but most 12vs don’t have any pumps from factory
Hmmmmmm. . . Those numbers sound like too much!! Too much fuel pressure can do the same thing that a lack of fuel pressure will do to your vp44!!! perhaps you should have considered using the regulator?

So at the time, I was unsure if my Ecm was working properly and telling my factor pump to come on so that is why I by passed it, but now I do feel like I could trust my ecm and I could wire it up and have it all be factory
@@floridafenceland1137. Thanks, I believe you could put some of these high priced pumps companies out of bussiness. You my friend should be working for Dodge. You have what I call Good Old Horse Sense and that beats book sense by a thousnad miles. I have seen men with 5 college degress work on something 5 days and I fixed it in 5 min becaues I used a litle horse sense. God Bless you my friend. You can find me on UA-cam (Merry Christmas Elvis by James McQueen).
That’s brother I appreciate that! God bless and I will check out your channel!
Great video, just recently found your channel and I'm in love with your truck! I have a question, why is it better to have higher fuel pressure?
Thank you man! And on these particular engines they need above 14 psi of fuel pressure to keep the injection pump cool, and lubricated otherwise the pump will fail
@@floridafenceland1137 No problem! And damn your truck was dropping to 9 psi too, how's it been holding up?
@@floridafenceland1137 Wrong. 10 psi is the minimum specification at idle.
Nicolas Rebollar it’s been doin great man!
So can I clarify. You have the holley running to the stock pump and stock pump to engine? Then does the manual switch power both pumps or just the holley? And it just stays on all the time?
So you ran a toggle switch off positive battery side, did you just ground into the frame?
Yeah probably I can’t remember
23psi is bad. Way to high. Fass only puts out 17 to 18 at idle.
Just means it bypasses through the relief valve all the time.
Your p7100 mechaincal pumps on the 12 valves require more fuel psi
What about when cutting the line? Is there fuel going to pour out? Do you need to have the tank almost empty? My truck has in tank pump.
I didn’t do anything special for it, you’ll lose whatever diesel is in the line but it won’t drain the tank or anything like that
Sooo..... You are unsure if your stock lift pump is still putting anything out? What set up do you have for stocker? engine mounted or in tank? I'm just weighing options at the moment. Is the holley still going strong?
Mine was engine mounted, and reading 8-12 psi I added the Holley to run with the stock pump and I as at 25psi I still recommend the Holley for these trucks still running good after 3 years
I have an airdog raptor 4g in my truck (came from previous owner). Would you recommend taking that out and putting this holly in, instead?
Love those tires what kinda tires are those and size also what kinda of lift you got
These tires are 285s basically 33s and I have a 2 inch level up front, my truck is now on 35s with the same level
How did you get the air out the line from in between the Holley and fuel tank?
So,5 years later, do you still have your 24v? I have 2 2500’s and bought a wrecked 3500 for parts. Love my 2gens. Much love from NC🤙
Where did you get the head lamps, looking to upgrade mine
I am curious about this as my understanding is the after 21 psi the vp44 stops working. I have had experience with this. I was using an airdog 150 at the time and put a 30 psi spring in, and it started and ran great, but i stopped for fuel and i could not get the truck to restart at the gas station i had to disconnect the fuel line at the gas station and swap the spring back and it started right up. Does anyone know the limitations of these 44's? right now i run 21 psi at idle and hold strong at 18-20 while cruising on my 4gII 160 airdog.
I have no clue exactly what is right and wrong all I know is I run 25 psi at idle and about 21 cruising and I have no issues at all
Hey man thanks for the help I did the same thing
Sweet deal man!
4 yrs later I looked across internet for this pump. You said 20 plus psi all I can find for Holley blue pump's is 14 max psi.
Yes that’s what is advertised on the pump but then I installed it on my truck I was at 20 psi on my fuel psi gauge
You also removed a screen that would slow down fuel flow to the pump, the more fuel to enter the pump in theory the more pressure it can produce. Maybe that is why it was much higher then what it said. Just my two cents.@@floridafenceland1137
How much psi are they suppose to have. I'm not a fan of the fass. They are loud pumps
I think 12 is the min at wide open throttle
Its supposed to be 15-20psi
Works great on 25 2 years strong now
What tires and size on that ram? Looks nice.
In this video they were 33s
What do you mean you cut the wires off the lift pump plug?
I'm trying to do the same thing to my 24v
Will this set up work on a 2006 dodge Cummins
My fuel pump was geting low psi turn out to b factory wiring bad wire now after fixing the wires it gets 20 psi
That’s awesome!
I'm a little late to the party. did you ever make it to the fass? how long did the Holley last i need a lift pump for a 3rd gen and don't want to spend big bucks
Still running my Holley man! The pump
Died after 1 year, went to advance auto, picked up another, returned the old one and I’m still going strong on my second pump and no extra money spent!
You don’t need that much pressure, plus those in line fuel filters are really small for diesel it may destroy your vp44
It was pretty good when I sold it
Vp44 isn’t supposed to have more than 15psi supply to the pump.
Been running great 2 years
Just means it bypasses through the relief valve all the time.
Yep dosnt give the fuel enough time to pull the heat from the pump. Since fuel is what cools the pump/computer board. Computer will run hotter shortening its life. At least that's my understanding.
Makes perfect sense, but it’s over 3 years and it’s still on the same vp44
@@floridafenceland1137
Dosnt really go by age but by miles. I've got 340,000 truck has only had 2 vp. Lift pump killed first one.
Great video. Thank you!
No problem! I hope it helped thank you!
Liked and subscribed, nice work! How long has the pump been working for you?
First one died after a year, second one still
Going
The Diesel Ranch 👍 Would you put the same one in next time? I like mine!
For the price it’s hard to beat!
The Diesel Ranch agreed!
Hey Crazy Acres, how's this working out long term for you?
I don't understand why people is going to a airdog or any aftermarket lift pump my truck has been converted to the in tank Lift pump it's been in there since 2003 and at idle I am holding it like 22 PSI I've never had any problem with my in tank system I guess because mine's all stock
That’s pretty cool I’m not familiar with that setup it seems like it works good! May have to look into that
I also have the in tank pump which was dodge replacements fix for a lot of block mounted lift pump failure.my truck is stock I have a 01 with only the in tank pump. What confuses me is can I run both in tank pump and a add a another either in the factory location on the block or in frame rail next to tank. Or eliminate in tank pump altogether. I'm seeing 7psi at idle and below 5 psi normal driving. 0 wot. Any advice would help. Thanks
Yeah there’s no reason you can’t run 2 pumps just Hook them up in line and run power to it you’ll definitely see a big increase in pressire
Thank you…. Great video and very affordable
Great 👍 Video. Thanks.
Thank you!
great video thabks
Welcome!
Do you know exactly what wiring harness you used?
I don’t it was whatever oreilly had on the shelf
Hi is you pump still working.
I just looked the pump up, it says maximum pressure is 14 psi, is this an inaccurate number or are the rest of your psi coming from vp pump?
Fuel Pressure is read in the filter housing after the lift pumps before the vp,not sure where it comes from but I’m glad it’s there an workin well
14psi is Dodge #, BOSCH SAYS 20PSI MAX.
It’s been 25 for a good while now and still going great
Thanks for the good advice
No problem I hope it helps
Is 25 psi a little high for a VP 44 ?
Do you think that this will work on a 12valve?
Also wondering if this will work on a Duramax?
Thanks
12v needs more like 45 psi so same concept with bigger pump yes and duramax I have no clue what they like for fuel pressure but same concept applies
Does the pump work with the lift pump in the tank or just the one on the block
I actually don’t have the in tank pump
On this model but it works well with the engine lift pump
Ok thanks
Are you running both pumps? The new Holley that goes to the stock pump mounted on the engine?
So you don't have the lift pump on the side of the block?
I do, both pumps hooked up to same switch, the Holley pump, feeds the engine lift pump
I'm at 6psi looked them up online says they are for gas only or is there a diesel pump
They are for gas but works for diesel
bro, so you telling me you added a fuel pump but also added a 12v mod to factory lift pump?
What
What's the furthest you've driven at one time with this pump?
Probably 3-4 hours round trip
@@floridafenceland1137 awesome. I'm doing a 4 hour trip both ways. Pulling a 2010power wagon back
Cody Hampton yeah I never had any issues with it no matter how far i drove
What issue were you experiencing other than the low pressure on your gauge?
Nothing really it drove fine! Just saw the pressure was low so decided to do something about it
@@floridafenceland1137 thank you. Awesome video and info. Did you run the regulator that comes with those pumps
I did not run it!
Are you still running the same set up, and is that Holley a gas or diesel pump?
Yes same setup! An it’s designed for gas but it’s been working fine for diesel, I’ve changed the pump once after a year and second one running just fine
Thanks for your help great looking truck man
On a stock VP
Of course man thank you!
It’s a HIgh Output stock vp
Would this work if i have an in-tank lift??
Idk to be honest
Did you attempt it?
Well it’s lasted longer than my airdog the motor burnt up on mine today. Only 1 1/2 years old
Hey that’s kinda cool for me at least! I’m sorry about your pump that sucks
@@floridafenceland1137 Good old holley quality control. or the diesel is getting the inner seal? Bio diesels are really hard on any rubber and even aluminum.
Good deal man... What's pressure drop to at WOT?
Hey man wot pressure never ever drops under 19 psi idles at 25-26 cruising around is like 22-23
Florida country Good deal thanks for the reply... And no VP issues with the increased pressure? How long have you had on now?
Yes sir sorry it took so long to reply and I installed it about 2 weeks before the video was posted so I’ve had it since then and no issues at all and I tow about 14k pounds at least once a week and never had any issues
Does your truck have in tank lift pump or in frame??
It has the lift pump I installed, not sure about in tank I doubt it
Do you think running just the blue with no stock pump at all ( with block off plate ) would still provide the same pressures as you said in your description under the video?
Ya know I’ve wondered the same thing! I’m really not sure to be honest with you this pump advertises 15-17 psi on the package so
I’m not too sure
@@floridafenceland1137 I guess there is only one way to find out unless someone makes a video of that first! ;))
@@floridafenceland1137 Btw how is that pump holding up after one year?
Are you running rear wheel spacers
Yes sir, a 2 inch in between the rears, I’m on 35s now and they still don’t touch so I’m happy with that
Any way to turn it down to 17-19?
I would Imagine so!
Lift or leveling kit?
It’s a 2 inch level spacer
How has it held up?
Still Running when I sold It a year ago
does that truck have a in tank pump ?
No sir just the Holley and a factory lift pump on the engine
so the holly blue just pushes fuel into the stock lift pump still?
Yes sir they are both wired to the same switch and the Holley pulls from the tank to feed the factory pump
@@floridafenceland1137 do you have a parts list for everything
It’s really just the pump, some hose and hose clamps that’s about it I think
Hmmmmmm. . . Those numbers sound like too much!!
Too much fuel pressure can do the same thing that a lack of fuel pressure will do to your vp44!!! perhaps you should have considered using the regulator?
Well, the vp has an over flow valve that opens to let excess psi go by and it’s been great for over a year so far so I would say it’s doing well
@@floridafenceland1137 - I see.... this is the first I am learning of an overflow valve on a vp44.
It would make sense, I know a hell of a lot more about the p7100 then I do the vp44.
👍 I appreciate your hasty reply!! Lol
@@floridafenceland1137 - on another note, have you gotten your cease-and-desist letter from Sinister Diesel yet??? Hahahaha
Haha haha no I have not, I wish they would send me one lol they are rediculous
Mr. Brown yeah I wish my truck had a p7100 but this is working for now! And my pleasure I love comments I try to be helpful
Can you put a link up to where you got your gauges?
It was just amazon!
Go with glowshift gauges. Can get them on amazon or glowshift themselves. Same price. Cheap but actually work great and last long time. Easy easy install
Yeah that’s what I have and I like them a lot
