You didn't make this video until a few months after I had installed my first ever lift pump I ever seen even first diesel truck but I got to say in retrospect I think yours is the best of the videos that I've seen. First off besides being thorough about what to do and why you injected some humor and fun and it made it actually cool to watch through even though I've now, done it.
great video! i ordered a FASS pump today and plan on following your procedures! your video is the best procedure ive seen on youtube! my 2008 w/160k is having fuel issues possibly due to vacuum loss from worn seals hoses etc. i agree completely with the need for a lift pump for the high pressure pump feed. makes perfect sense as many diesels have! not sure why duramax didnt use lift pumps on some systems! thanks for this great install video and helpful and interesting information.
A PPE power centrifuge oil filter that mount to the top of the engine, for easy serviceability, would really help keep that engine clean and living a long time.
@@freedomworx I had to stop the install last night. Electric is complete for the most part. Will connect the hoses in the next hour. The ingoing and outgoing horses was a complicated task. Will view your video for the fourth time. 🤣😌🇺🇸🇺🇸
8:20 minute mark, or close to it… spied an awesome round, it’s half of a century. I am sore from so many ups and downs, under the truck, to back standing up. My Jimmy has a cool aftermarket fuel tank, Transfer Flow 45 gallon. Had to lower this aftermarket tank to allow access to the quick release fuel connection. This video is much more thorough than all others for this yob. The sense of humor is appreciated on this video.
Air dog also doesn’t have a bypass circuit if the motor or the pump itself fails and leaves you stranded. Fass does, therefore if the pump fails, you can still pump fuel with the CP3 and limp to town, home, or shop.
I have driven my truck with fuse removed, on accident, for a few days till notice the truck fell on its face under hard acceleration. U can drive under normal conditions with the air dog 165 with no power. Have done it more than once.
Are you sure? I have an air dog and due to ice buildup the wiring harness pulled apart and I did not even realize my air dog was offline until the next day when I drained water separate and it would not re-prime
i've watched your video multiple times before unboxing and doing the install, by using your instructions compared to the factory instructions i was able to save myself some headaches, great video, thank you
Good video, thanks. I bought the FASS for my 2004 Chevy 6.6 Duramax, I liked the 5/8" long sweep tube in the pump opposed to the smaller 1/2" 90-degree tight bend on the Air Dog. Bought the filter delete from FASS but it would not stop leaking, had to take it off, put a new filter and housing on instead, now I have a nice aluminum filter delete paperweight I can't do squat with. Anyone else have that problem with the filter delete not working? I increased my highway mileage about 1.5 -2 mpg. I typically get around 27-28 mpg on the highway empty and hauling around 22 mpg, depends on the ambient temp. I'm all stock on my 2004 dually crew cab so I installed the 100 series, just turned over 112,120 miles when I got the safety inspection the other day. I highly recommend everyone do this for your diesels. It's $700 well spent. I always buy new trucks and take care of what I have. Still have a 1992 Ford F-350 dually crew with the 7.3 and 5 speed manual.
Grwat video on the FASS install. The instructions that come with it are hot steaming garbage. Very informative with the right level of humor. Thank you.
I have the same year truck. I used that WCFab bracket. I like the bracket better than the one that comes with the kit. Then i bought that 63 gallon tank from S&B and had to move the bracket again to the outside of the frame. I still like it better than the on that came with the kit
I ran the filter bowl delete from FASS pitch wasn’t the same as the housing had to use a strap wrench to tighten to stop leak. Had work in cold weather and started to leak till it warmed up. Ended up just running the housing delete. Tried two different filter bowl deletes same issue.
GREAT VIDEO! You are a likable fella to begin with, love the subtle sarcasm. It makes for an easier watch. You should go into content creation, you have the right personality. Anyway, thank you for this video bc it’s been far more useful than any others and you made it more enjoyable, GOOD JOB!

I guess you could buy that fitting that Fass uses to go to the suction line and put it into the plumping of the AirDog setup and you could do the same bypass the lift pump scenario if you had the lift pump fail to take it out of the system loop.
Good call on the hard spiral wrap. At 17:34 it shows the hose going right against 3 layers of body sheet metal. I would add more protection in areas like that against chaffing by installing a stainless steel hose clamp over the wrap so that the sheet metal rubs against the hose clamp and not the wrap. At 650GPM, that pump would empty your tank before you could shut off the engine. At over $5 per gallon, better safe than sorry.
17:57 was confusing. I am still struggling. So the lone brass nipples towards the rear tires do not go to the fuel tank filler part, the unpainted “y” on the fuel fill line, near gas cap?
@@freedomworx thank you sir. Did I mention I wear a helmet 24/7? Haha. Was on the phone w Fass. Hung up bc the line went silent, then your comment came in. Thank you! Anyway, thanks again for the video. Your 50 cal pointer was cool. Can’t wait to fire the GMC up. But unfortunately, I have to run in to Fernley to purchase more fuel hose and a union to splice and connect. My truck has an add on fuel tank, 45 gallon Transfer Flow; cannot reach the fuel connection above the tank. Dropped it and attached it per access to the fuel line, red quick release fuel line. What a task. It will pay off later today. Ugh.
@@freedomworx the 05 is running smoothly. The cab is more quiet inside, can’t seem to follow the logic behind this, but the interior seems significantly more quiet. The engine is more smooth as well. I put my foot in it hard, barely any coal visible. Can accelerate to 80 mph quicker. Your video helped a lot. Thank you for walking me thru it, per my comments/answering them sir. I used Gorilla Tape to wrap all electric and fuel lines, flame resistant. I think the fuel mileage increased about one mpg average. 65 mph with a slight head wind gave 19.5 mpg.
I've had the AirDog 165 II on my 96 GM 6.5L since 2013. The truck is happier with it than the OEM. Even the OEM 1994 LP which was supposedly a little better. Mine was gifted having been on two previous trucks since 2008. Customer service was great as I chose to go with new hoses vs. the already twice cobble up ones I recieved. Clear instructions and I'm not intuitive though I had to adapt because at the time, there wasn't a kit for the 6.5 motor equipped trucks (They do now). The pump motor failed after four years later (guess I'm part of another 1% group [Veteran) and, again, customer service was great. Sold me a new motor only and for a low price and I was able to repair the system in short order. The truck was off line until last year and I just reinstalled the AirDog. Again, the truck is much happier and I plan to leave it in.
I have a 2011 LML I installed this same pump on, w/ the WC Fab mount, using CAT filter, I also installed a sump pump on the bottom of the tank and did a fuel filter bypass delete under the hood removing the original fuel filter assembly. Everything works like a champ. I did that a couple years ago but saw this video and had to check it out.
New subscriber!! Have a 381,000 plus mile LLY.Recieved new Bosch injectors and a Fass 100 today. I have always bought the 150 or 165pump and truck would start loping a little. Soni would have to remove the ball ans spring and cut 1 to 1 and half coil off of the spring to lower the psi sent to the engine. Duramaxs like to see about 5 to 7 psi without the loping issue! Awesome video!!
On your back working above your face, like at 11:24 i would also add a face shield. I can't count how much dirt that has still ended up in my eyes even with safety glasses on, and a face shield just deflects it all. Even the super cheap like $6 one at harbor freight is totally worth it
I have had a Fass Titanium 95 for 12 years no issues. I have 50 hp over stock DD’ s and it runs great. Change filters every 30K +/-. A fuel pump pressure gauge is nice for a baseline psi as well as for filter check.
Diesel eats white teflon tape by the way, learned that lesson the hard way on my cummins swap. Chances are if you take those fittings apart the tape will be all stringy and in little pieces, at least mine was. Good ol' fashioned pipe dope seems to be the ticket for diesel fittings.
Yep I have an air dog and sure as shit dobern stranded a few times on my dodge 2500 now I'm installing one on my duramax so I guess we'll see on that aspect
Yeah, I know that FASS has a clause that you have to buy from them or an authorized retailer to make the warranty valid. And you have to register it with them within 30 days of purchase. This was my grandad’s truck, so I’ll never get rid of it. I’ll probably get an opportunity to exercise that warranty at some point.
I recommend the Fleece sending unit for the lift pump. I think the Airdog has a better laid out kit, and the mounting location is on the inside of frame.
I’ve had my FASs on my 2006 Duramax since the 95 gal/minute flow. Only had to rebuild my primer twice in this many years and get better than 20mpg on flat highway. Only difference is the noise, but can’t hear while driving.👍
I run an Air Dog because I know a few people who have had problems with Fass filters . I've known a few trucks that has had their lift pumps stolen. I always mount lift pumps where they can't be seen unless you are under the truck.
My truck keeps losing prime and fuel gauge is like you described. I installed a new Fuel filter housing. What can I do without installing one of these? Thanks for information.
For me I would get the long start/failure to start when I park on an incline. The air floats up into the top end and prevents the start. have to prime and bleed to get a start which is still difficult. doing an airdog soon. thanks for the video
I run Baldwin filters, and I did have water in my system, I only noticed it when it froze up in the below zero weather,I have since put a heater on,fast sells it.never had an issue,I always check the fuel water separate when it is warmed up and shut off.drain into a clear cup and let it set.peace of mind
I installed my FASS system when I got my 2012 GMC. I also installed a tank sump to clean it up for return and complete fuel use (in case the gauge goes stupid). Put a fuel filter (billet) delete at the motor. Working great. Change filter and separator every other oil change (cheap insurance). I heard a DF delete, 3 stage tuner and straight exhaust is available. 🙄 someplace. Not sure.
Did you have and engine lights come on after installing the fass and sump? I installed on my 2013 gmc and now have a fuel rail sensor on wasnt sure if you had the same problem
I have an air dog 165 on my truck currently. It’s been on there for about 9’years now and it’s finally slowing down. I bought a FASS100 and have yet to install it. What are the ports capped by the red plugs? Is not necessary to remove the caps and plug them?
those Italian marine lift pumps also work, can switch them off to and the injector pump still pulls fuel past them... two of them 7.4GPM is not 10.4GPM tho 60psi of lift blows out any air. adds pressure regulator on the fuel return line vs modifying injection pump... 60psi past what the injection pump does normally.
I understand the fuel return spool with angled pipe needs to pointed at the tank, makes sense. But what about the orientation of the angled fuel return pipe? Does it need to be at the top (12 oclock) position or can it be at a right angle (90 or 180 degree) positions. Also you mention they have the filter arranged with 2 micron first and 40 microns second. Are these interchangeable and can they be installed in reverse (40 microns first and 2 microns second)?
I don’t think it matters how you clock the nipple on the return spool. Mine is pointed toward the rear of the truck. And for the filters, the thing that is unique about the FASS filters is that the water separator is incorporated into the fine filter (2 micron) instead of the primary filter (144 micro ). You can’t interchange them. The pump pushes through the 2 micron filter. If you put that filter before the pump, the pump would have to suck fuel through it. You’d end up with cavitation and not enough flow. The primary filter (144 micron) protects the pump from debris, but still flows enough to not cause cavitation or flow issues. The secondary filter (2 micron) protects everything else downstream like the CP3 and injectors.
@@freedomworx Ok I guess I missed that. So the fuel goes through the 144 micron filter first to protect the pump and then the 2 micron filter is second going to the engine?
Not sure if the FASS has it but my AirDog has a flow thru system, if the AirDog dies for whatever reason it will still pull fuel through the system and run just fine. :)
@@freedomworx The video I watched from a few years ago said they didn't at the time. Very well could have changed since then. Seems like a good change to make.
You know… there was one question I wanted to ask… Are you familiar with the fleece in tank left pump? I think it’s called a power flow. I know I need to put a lift pump on… However I’m debating whether to put one on the rails or in the tank. Your thoughts now that you have one installed. Again appreciate the video
@stevenm.hollis4429 there are pros and cons to each. The thing I like about the external units provide easier service to the pump and provide for more filter capacity. The main reason OEMs put them in the tank, is noise reduction.
@@freedomworx Thanks for your fast response I appreciate it. I’ll let you know what I decide. Couple of my diesel France have said to put in the fleece sending unit along with putting a lift pump on the rail. They also said I could leave the original fuel bowl on for X extra filtration. I guess you mentioned before the main reason is to keep that CP3 pump happy With whatever you choose.
We don’t know yet but we are friends. Your version of infohumor is welcome here. A little lite on sailor vocab but that keeps it family friendly. I’ll be subbing. If we get enough likes and you wanted to buy an lml so you could teach me other things, well that would be great too. Until next time, adiós
That be cool. Probably just enough to help push my waste veg oil as regular VE type pump struggling but I shouldn’t put it under too much pressure sucking either.
It’s different depending on the application. A Duramax CP3 pump doesn’t like any more than that pressure. But the FASS system for a 12 Valve P-Pump motor is significantly higher than 10 PSI. Not sure about the VE systems though.
I'm super unhappy with my fast fuel lift pump I purchased it for my 7.3 Shortly after purchasing it, they made an update and discontinued the fuel filters. So I can no longer replace them. And I've been running the same filters for nearly 10 years. They say they have a cross filter that will work. I've purchased that 1 and It will not prime. So yeah f fast fuel
There are plenty of filters out there that cross-reference and should work fine. If the primary won’t prime, just fill it with diesel before you screw it on.
A lift pump pushes fuel from the tank to the injection pump. Without a lift pump, the injection pump has to suck fuel from the tank. As the vehicle ages, it’s not uncommon to get air ingress (leakage) into the fuel lines, and the pump loses its prime. Then the truck won’t start or it takes a while to start.
The highest horsepower diesel blow tons of black smoke, unless they are running nitrous. If you aren't blowing black smoke, and you aren't running nitrous, you are leaving power on the table. You can't put enough turbo on a Diesel engine to clean up all the smoke, regardless of what Gale Banks tells you. The only way to get maximum power out of a diesel, and burn clean at the same time, is nitrous. If you don't understand that, I will be happy to explain the EGT, Smoke, Boost life cycle too you.

@@Thecalmthefuckdownchannelfass makes their own brand of fuel heater element

Diesel eats white teflon tape by the way, learned that lesson the hard way on my cummins swap. Chances are if you take those fittings apart the tape will be all stringy and in little pieces, at least mine was. Good ol' fashioned pipe dope seems to be the ticket for diesel fittings.
I use Gasoila an all my fittings that touch petroleum products. amzn.to/3MPq92z
Blue monster tape is good for fuel lines
Prime the pump and party 👊
Great videos 👍
Glad you enjoy them 👍
yes he is a cool and funny guy. great personality! love his video! party on!!
Those magnetic mounts are awesome. Glad I watched the whole video😂
Yep. I just got a fresh pack from Amazon yesterday 😎
Always great quality content.
I appreciate it 👍
This is a guy that I could party with.
😎
That was a very good explanation thank you
I'm glad you got something out of it 👍
Used this when installing mine last night. Went beautifully. Have you had any issues with 1/4 tank and it not priming? Heard it’s hit or miss
I haven’t had an issues since installing the lift pump. Had some before.
Yep I have an air dog and sure as shit dobern stranded a few times on my dodge 2500 now I'm installing one on my duramax so I guess we'll see on that aspect
The air dog i have on my LML went out after 26k miles n they won't replace under their warranty
What was their excuse for not warrantying it?
@freedomworx they said since I bought it from the utuber truck master they didn't sell it directly to me I'd have to contact him
Trying to get n touch with them is impossible I have even left comments on his channel with no way to make it right he's full of excuses 2
Guess just out 800$
Yeah, I know that FASS has a clause that you have to buy from them or an authorized retailer to make the warranty valid.
The Fleece system is good. A just wanted the filtration and pump all in one package.
@@freedomworx I'm talking about the sending unit, not the lift pump version.
I’ve had my FASs on my 2006 Duramax since the 95 gal/minute flow. Only had to rebuild my primer twice in this many years and get better than 20mpg on flat highway. Only difference is the noise, but can’t hear while driving.👍
That noise just lets you know that it's working 😂
I run an Air Dog because I know a few people who have had problems with Fass filters . I've known a few trucks that has had their lift pumps stolen. I always mount lift pumps where they can't be seen unless you are under the truck.
Folks steeling lift pumps? What’s the world coming to 😂😂
My truck keeps losing prime and fuel gauge is like you described. I installed a new Fuel filter housing. What can I do without installing one of these? Thanks for information.
If I knew that, I wouldn’t have installed one myself 😉
Great info, thanks. Interested to find out how the Baldwin filters work with the FASS system.
I’m sure they fill work fine. Unless FASS decides to start sponsoring me, I’ll probably be switching when it’s time to change them out 😉
This was the best video on installing a lift pump, thanks. Do you have one on replacing cooling lines from the transmission?
Fortunately, I haven’t needed to replace them yet.
Great info! Lift pump 💪 ⚒️🤠
Thanks for watching 👍
For me I would get the long start/failure to start when I park on an incline. The air floats up into the top end and prevents the start. have to prime and bleed to get a start which is still difficult.
doing an airdog soon. thanks for the video
Yep. You might need a lift pump 😂
I run Baldwin filters, and I did have water in my system, I only noticed it when it froze up in the below zero weather,I have since put a heater on,fast sells it.never had an issue,I always check the fuel water separate when it is warmed up and shut off.drain into a clear cup and let it set.peace of mind
Yeah we don't have to worry about freezing fuel here in Georgia. If it's ever that cold here, we just shut down.
That’s one hell of an inheritance
Well he actually left it to my mom. I bought it from her. So it didn't just fall into my lap 😉
I can confirm the high blood pressure part. About to blow a gasket myself!
Yeah, pretty aggravating process.
Not sure.
Deletes…never heard of that 😉
Did you have and engine lights come on after installing the fass and sump? I installed on my 2013 gmc and now have a fuel rail sensor on wasnt sure if you had the same problem
I have an air dog 165 on my truck currently. It’s been on there for about 9’years now and it’s finally slowing down. I bought a FASS100 and have yet to install it. What are the ports capped by the red plugs? Is not necessary to remove the caps and plug them?
Those are heater ports. Coolant would flow through them if they were In use. It’s just an open cavity, so the plastic plugs are fine.
Im not a diesel guy and I'm not sure why i watched this video but dam Im glad I did. Laughed and learned 🤣👌
Glad you enjoyed it 👍😎
those Italian marine lift pumps also work, can switch them off to and the injector pump still pulls fuel past them... two of them 7.4GPM is not 10.4GPM tho 60psi of lift blows out any air. adds pressure regulator on the fuel return line vs modifying injection pump... 60psi past what the injection pump does normally.
MY injector pump only wants around 10psi.
Rust belt guys DEFINITELY need to use a good amount of anti-seize on the mounting bolts if they ever hope to get it apart ever again.
I couldn't live that rust belt life. I'm used to trucks lasting 40 years before they rust.
Good job! 👊
Thanks for watching 👍
Great video thanks
Going to give it a shot
Thanks for watching 👍
@ yep 👍
I wonder if putting a shop vac into the fuel fill would create enough vacuum to keep that fuel cooler hose from leaking with a fill tank?
Might be enough to implode the tank 😂😉
Love your X man looks real nice I got 2 of them too.
I appreciate it. There is a full build series on the Busted Knuckle Films channel. ua-cam.com/video/Mq36IlPpRko/v-deo.html
Ran across your video this morning. Great job! Where did you find a blem FASS?
Thanks for watching. They had some blems for sale on the website when I was looking. 👍
Not sure if the FASS has it but my AirDog has a flow thru system, if the AirDog dies for whatever reason it will still pull fuel through the system and run just fine. :)
I’ve heard that the FASS will allow fuel to pass, but I haven’t verified it.
@@freedomworx The video I watched from a few years ago said they didn't at the time. Very well could have changed since then. Seems like a good change to make.
What is that hose clamp at 8:21? Thanks.
These: amzn.to/3TVUDCT
Are you worried about the 1/4 tank and the pump runs dry? It happened to me - you can install a sump to eliminate that issue
That’s certainly an option. But I plan to make more power, so I went ahead and got a lift pump.
So I believe i heard you say the word BLEM . Do you know weather or not fass stocks several blems. Thanks
I’m not sure. I just know that there were some available when I was shopping.
Hey brother the Air Dog 4G 165gph has a bypass ✔️it can be off and still allows fuel to flow as normal without lift pump 👍🤠
That’s good to know. Hopefully I’ll never have to find out 😎
Is that 25MM or 30MM round you’re using as a pointer? I used to manage the medium cal procurement team for the Air Force.
30mm 😎
Any updates on this? How do you feel about it today?
Truck cranks and drives. Not much else to say about it. No measurable change in fuel economy, if that’s your goal.
Great video. I own a 5.9 Cummins. But this was helpful. By the way I like your excursion nice rig. Again keep up the good work… Cheers
I appreciate it. I’ve got some 5.9 content coming up. Working on it right now. 👍
I love this guy! I wish he was my neighbor we’d drink a lot of beer together!
I will take a drink 😎🍻
We don’t know yet but we are friends. Your version of infohumor is welcome here. A little lite on sailor vocab but that keeps it family friendly. I’ll be subbing. If we get enough likes and you wanted to buy an lml so you could teach me other things, well that would be great too. Until next time, adiós
I'm glad you enjoy my conetent. But yeah, If talked like I did in the Marine Corps, I'd get cancelled 😂
I run twin Kennedy lift pumps. 600 RWH and no issues.
Honestly never heard of them until you brought them up. 👍
How do you know the psi it put up to the injection pump? If it needs ti be regulated can it regulate?
There is a regulator incorporated into the FASS assembly. It’s designed to be 8-10PSI.
Looking good.
Thanks for watching 👍
2011 had a cp4 suck from the tank no lift pump
Did I say otherwise? I honestly can’t remember.
The fuse unkownly blew on my air dog, and my cummins continued to run for months.
Well that’s good to know 👍
Hello how much pressure should I put to the pump for lb7 2003?
I wouldn’t know. I’ve got an LBZ 😉. I take it on faith that FASS and AirDog set the pump pressure appropriate for the application.
Does it come with the hoses as a kit
Yep. The only thing that didnt come with the kit was the hose wrap and magnetic zip tie holders I used.
in -20 u should b useing conditionet especaily in a cp4
I always run fuel supplement. But I’ll never go anywhere that’s -20 unless I’m kidnapped and taken there 😉
Which pump did you use for the truck?
FASS 165
@@freedomworx would both the fass and airdog work with gasoline (petrol) engines as well?
@@kumaragurusaravanan2248 I’m not certain. I know,in general, gasoline pumps aren’t rated for diesel.
Did it improve fuel economy?
Nope 😂
What is a lift pump for??
To make sure no air goes into the fuel system?
A lift pump pushes fuel from the tank to the injection pump. Without a lift pump, the injection pump has to suck fuel from the tank. As the vehicle ages, it’s not uncommon to get air ingress (leakage) into the fuel lines, and the pump loses its prime. Then the truck won’t start or it takes a while to start.
@ can I use cat filters on those?
TRACY😂😂
Sexy Beast 😂
By the way mine is on a dodge 6.7.i have 125k on the pump.180k on the truck.
Very nice 👍
Fass or air dog?
FASS is doing good so far 👍
No you don’t leave a lift pump but it does help with leaking fuel lines
I needed a lift pump.
Either but I will NOT use Fass branded filters.
Not sure how I feel about their water removal technology. I prefer a standard primary filter with water separator in it myself.
WHERE is the comparison to the AirDog??
It’s in there, you just have to listen 🤷🏻♂️. Filters and plumbing are the only real difference.
For more HP you need more air not fuel! If you blow black smoke full throttle you need more air that is more unburned fuel and is nasty
Cat filters are way superior to Baldwin. and pretty close to FASS
Well Cat actually makes their own filters, unlike most folks. They are good filters.
PS; take off the fuel cap tank is pressurized
I'm sure mine has a leak somewhere to vent that pressure. 😉
Built my own for half the price. its not to hard.
Time is money. I don’t have time to piece together a lift pump system. But if you e got the time and the know-how. DIY is always rewarding 👍
lets just skip to "step 5"
Party 😎
