One Step Ahead is one of my favourite tracks from Mal. Such beautiful simplicity. For anyone who thinks that just because it's simple, it's easy, it just exposes their lack of musical maturity. When it's simple, every note has purpose. A very underrated drummer is Mal Green.
I absolutely LOVE Mal’s drumming. He is deeply unique and extremely musical. I knew Mal when he lived in Melbourne during the early-mid 80’s, In downtime from Split Enz, he wrote and recorded his own songs. Mal would hire me as a session drummer while he played keyboards and sang because he wanted to concentrate on the song. He’s genuine, warm, honest I was more than honoured to play for him. I (still) hold a great degree of respect. Maz
that's great to hear Peter! And we love your drumming too BOOM CRASH OPERA! His drumming clearly made a big impact on so many drummers. thank you for the comment.
@@petermazmaslen I like it as well but just as one other commentator said, it's lacking something. I'm not a good enough musician to tell you what that is but personally, I liked it.
This is a great little piece, Mal's one of those rare drummers who plays the song. He just gets it and this is a terrific insight into his contribution to Split Enz overall sound. When true Colours came out I must have listened to it hundreds of times, zeroing in on the drum tracks trying to figure out what was going on in there. Hats off Mal Green.
Thank you Mal Green, what an wonderful insight. You are an excellent 'communicator'. It's so good to hear your explanations and hear the beats. Charlie ... what a song, Tim Finn.
This is superb. I literally wrote a note to myself to ask Mal about Dizrythmia and Luton. Dizrythmia is a genius work of art, and his rhythms are fucking sublime. I love the use of the kick drum. He's proto metal and sounds like double kick.
That was extremely interesting.I didn't realise you were so instrumental in getting the sound for each song.Yes I got you was very cleverly drummed now I come to think of it,and it mat not have worked with a drummer with less insight into his craft...I found it especially interesting how you explained the light and dark aspects of the I got you track...i.e tom tom,to snare......that really made the song actually...I hope the Finns are grateful to you.......
Mal entered Split Enz very well and was always fun in the videos, you can really see his personality. But for me Emlyn Crowther was THE Spit Enz drummer. His drum style really fitted well but when they later went more "simple" Mal was a great choice.
Mal Green, drummer of seminal 70's pop group Split Enz, takes you through three classic tracks of the band, "I Got You", "I See Red" and "Charlie". Mal chats about his drumming philosophy and interesting facts about recording these iconic NZ songs. #splitenz #vdrums
Clearly knows his limitations so uses his creativity which is rather unusual for a pop drummer as most pop drummers could barely play though there were exceptions. I really like drumming on I got you. Also eighth notes on the floor tom was a very punk thing to do Clem Burke did it a lot as did Budgie, Josh Freese, Topper Headon, Tre Cool all very floor tom heavy.
It’s a song about killing a girlfriend (or wife). Charlie is a woman. But it’s fictional. Just a story. Just like watching a movie about a crime of passion. So yea, we are going to ignore that fact.
@@justingaribaldi7723 *sigh* No, 'Charlie' could be a man *or* a woman (ie. Charles or Charlotte) as could the protagonist for that matter, the ambiguity adds to the mystery. Of course it is fictional, that doesn't prevent it being phenomenally unsettling! Anyway, it is IMHO their best ever song and I happen to know from interviews that several members of the band feel the same.
Plenty of songs and art in general are about dark themes. I don't ignore it, I love the dark theme that goes along with the ironically upbeat (and hence foreboding) feel of the musical arrangement.
13 mins and 22 sec to explain the most simple and straight forward drum tracks ever done. I think I could have done those the first week I started drumming. Remember he was sacked and replaced temporally by Noel Crombie!! I rest my case
Well, he was Split Enz's drummer for five years, and he won the audition over ex-Sparks member Dinky Diamond, so they must have seen something in him...

one step ahead is my favourite too only just dethroned my original favourite 'I got you'
Oh, here it is, the obligatory, ignorant "underrated" comment which is to be found beneath every fucking You Tube video...

Met him during the 2006 concert series, and he was the NICEST guy ever. So personable and willing to talk to me as a random fan.

Amazing drummer. Extraordinary band!
Terrific drummer one of the greatest for feel and timing !
so distinct. I can tell and sing all the songs just with his drum track going.
Thanks Mal and roland. hope u r well.

Excellent post.
A great drummer on one of the greatest albums ever recorded. True Colours
My calves are hurting just listening to the bass drum on I See Red!
haha! Yes, it's a full-on work out!
this amazing i love it
thank you
awesome
What a genius!
thank you
...and you seem like a really thoughtful and nice guy......
Charlie is a song about Phil (Judd) perhaps the Peter Gabriel persona of Genesis as to Split Enz. Agree?
The hardest drum beat out there
Can you play jazz on the v-drums? Just curious.
Yes you can
I love this. I love seeing musicians talk about their process. But come on. Roland couldn't have programmed a slightly more realistic drum sound?
+Rylee Strange Thanks Rylee, remember you are hearing the room
sound too. The direct kit sound is quite different on the downloadable
patches.
Are we all gonna just ignore the fact that Charlie is a song about murdering your friend with your bare hands ???
