You get old, but the music stays young !!! It is amazing - People in those days did not realize how good this band was. Excellent song !!!!
They need to be in the R&R HoF, like, yesterday!
Yeah nah only kids knew it was great
Australian music from the 80s.I am so proud of that. Brilliant song
Damn straight.
Trust me...
We did !
Enz of an Era !
if you got to live the 80s music when you were a young teenager like me it was the best time of our lives
Agreed it was a spirit of fun and freedom. What happened????
I'm with you on that statement. I'm 59 and "We had it ALL in the 80's."
Agreed!
I was 22 when this song came out and I've always loved it. I'm 65 now and I still love it
I am 22 and I love this song sm now ❤
I'm 68, was in medical school when it came out, lazar etched and all
I was -2 yrs old lol
I was 20 when this song came out and I am now 63 and I still love this song❤
I discovered it in 2000 when I was 10. I’m 33 now and it’s my 2nd favourite song ever 😭😍
Can't believe it's taken me 38 years on earth to discover this group. I've been robbed!
Well done.....If you're discovering music from the Southern hemisphere of the 80s..check out the " Chills"....the " Clean" from NZ....i guarantee you will not be disappointed......
U at least did my friend
Dont forget to check out the other finn brothers project . Crouded House
Found this song some time in December 2022 now I listen to it all the time..
It’s never too late.
If you're an American and you meet a New Zealander tell him or her you're a fan of Split Enz or that you admire the Finn brothers and you have a friend for life.
Too true
All hail the brothers' Finn ❤❤❤
Nial's son Liam is really talented too. I saw him at The Echo in LA in 08 or 09.
How does this song have less than half a million views? Should be at a billion.
Unique.
2 billion. Don't sell these guys short.
I know😄. This song is timeless.
Timing. They would 8 million views if there had been internet and video sharing in 1980.
maybe because it wasn't a hit in europe?
I’ve started reading “Don’t Dream It’s Over, The Remarkable Life of Neil Finn”, a biography by Jeff Apter. I’m up to chapter 5 now, and am captivated.
I was 6 when this song came out and it became an anthem for me dealing with the breakup of my parents, their divorce, and ongoing custody battle of us kids. Even though that was a bad time of my life, I always remember this song with fond memories, and it will always remain a favourite of mine.
The words of a song can have so many different meanings for different people, depending on what is going on in their lives.
It's so nice to have music to turn to when things happen in life ,sometimes it distracts you away from the craziness of what's going on around you eh x
Yep Im 60 now and once again listening to this old classic.
i was fortunate to be in my 20's in the 80's. Best time ever.
I have loved this song from day one! I was like 12 or 13 when it came out. I'm 54 now and still love this song!
I was 8 and I’ve loved it 44 years
This song kicked ass when it was first recorded, and it still kicks ass forty three years later... The group is totally badass
Very underrated, so sad.
@@andymatthews7617I agree. I wish Split Enz took off more worldwide like Crowded House did.
@@preziosestelle7368 I suppose most people are into NOISE now ,rather than good music, thanks for reply.
Songs like this have that authentic sound & catchy tune yet so remarkable. 80s forever
This song...the 80's...love it still!!
80's best era of music
Having the tall guy just stand and sway to the music
next to the drummer is simply just genius! it makes the music video.
Noel Crombie. Created the Split Enz look.
Perhaps he was drunk and hanging on to the curtains to stay upright 😅
He directed the video, designed the costumes and played percussion. It's pretty hilarious that he decided to just stand there
I used to complain because my dad played music like this all the time in the car but now I’ve got older I’ve actually realised how good these songs are , it also reminds me of the car journeys and makes me happy that It reminds me of him. He’s not passed away but I have my own family now and I barely see him so I have a little listen when I want to reminisce
Go see your Dad. Life is short. I'm sure he would love to see you. I wish I could see mine right now. 💗
Go and see him, and play this song to him. I GUARANTEE you will make his life. Especially if he knows this piece of musical perfection reminds you of him ❤
Fantastic!
Brilliant song.

I saw Neil Finn perform this song at a pub called Golden Dawn in Ponsonby a few years back and it was a pretty special night. I managed to have a word with Neil and he was nice to me. His parting words were "thanks for listening!" I've been listening since I was a kid and I'll be listening long after the wheels have fallen off. Bless the Finns.
Auckland? Looks like the joint is closed now. Too bad. Seems like it had a cool vibe.
A very underrated band internationally.
Bullshit
One of the best songs of the 80s
Damn that elder Finn brother was handsome. I bought this 45 in 1980.Still sounds great 40 years later.
I forgot how much I have always dug this song. ❤
Yummy
I was 4 years old in 1980, yet I vividly remember seeing this music video at my cousin's place and being absolutely captivated by it. That makes seeing this video literally one of my earliest memories EVER, and why I've always had a special affection for this song.
I was 13 😱 now I’m 56 years old 😢
I was 10. We were seeing the best vid that year.
Same here! I turned 5 at the end of 1980, I remember being fascinated by the photo coming to life. It doesn't take much to amuse me😄

Hey, I can remember age 4 vividly and being enthralled by MTV videos (Michael and Prince were my top dawgs). But instead of this one, I remember the Crowded House videos, "Something So Strong" and "Don't Dream It's Over". Classic tunes.
The New Wave hitting like a ton of bricks here. Killer song, timeless. I've always loved it, since I was 11 years old.
My now-husband took me to see Neil Finn on our first date in the Amsterdam Woods theatre. I forgot how to word when we met him at the end of the show. Neil is such a lovely human being and even signed the set list! It was framed at on view at our wedding and is still on our wall in our first home together. Thanks Neil! Keep being awesome
+1.. Fond memories. .. Priceless.
I do not believe you making up
You should post this on his Insta comment section or DM him.
I love this song 🎵 ❤️, it takes me back to my teenage years when I was young and free and just having fun and enjoying what I wanted to do.
You better stay on teenage years! 👍🏴

Also suggest you "Freedom" ( Wham!) R.I.P George! 👍🏴
I was going through a lot of crazy depressive shit when this was released. This song helped me get through it. Thanks!
love it proper music
Ya
I never even knew what MTV was until I came back from overseas in 1984 I first saw it at Air force base, when I landed at Hurlburt Air force base in Florida 😂 long time ago 🙃🙂🫡🇺🇸🗡⚔️ 🪂🪖
Everybody goes through depressive shit. The whole world is depressed. You are not special. Not everybody is happy 100% of the time.
If Split Enz had originated in Britain or the US, they would be music legends now, but they are Legends in NZ and maybe Oz only, I love reading comments from people overseas, who discovered them, and love the band as much as us kiwis, .
calm down mate
Split Enz and Crowded house are legends in Australia. Crowded House did their farewell to the world in 1996 at the Sydney Opera House.
Legends in Nz OZ and all over I have been listening to this from the other side of the world since it was released
Bret Easton Ellis, an American author, explicitly mentions this song playing in a scene from his new novel, set in 1981 in Los Angeles. That's how I found out about it. So I think it was probably popular stateside as well, at least among younger people who sought out "new wave" stuff in the late-70s/early-80s.
Relax, this song was on rotation in the early days of MTV. MTV needed videos to play, so a lot of unknown bands from the UK and other places became famous because they had videos. Videos at the time were just made for the music industry to promote albums. They used to be shown on Don Kirshners Rock Concert and the Midnight Special late at night. For example they would say "Special appearance by the Rolling Stones". You would think they would be on the show and they would play a video of a song from the album Emotion Rescue. MTV just made a channel of those videos. Not every band made videos at the time!!! So MTV needed material.
I'm 70 years old and I remember when they came out. I bought this cd Very Good!
Fun music.Still is Great to here.
CD’s, wow, I remember all chatter about how it was going to break the music business, like, what? Tape recorders did? Lols😜
Well, who can argue with Your view on anything rock and roll.Peace!
yup, another great song from the 80's. Reflex reaction forces me to click thumbs up.
Me too
No bro ....it deserves thumbs up
Listen to the WHOLE album then we can talk!!!!
Glad u luv the song,, its an absolute aussie classic,, but I have to correct u,,Iit to not a song from the 1980s, it was on the split enz album, ( true colours) colours) 1979 & it was number one on the top 40 charts,, 1979 :-) 👍
@@johnmartin2917 Yes True Colours, great read from Start to Finish, remember when you bought an album for the whole thing, not just 1 song, builds up the whole way!!!!!
Heard this song today at a restaurant playing 80's music. Forgot how much I loved it, and what a timepiece it is.
Not enough of this type of music is played on radio, dont know why??
I was 16 when this came out. Living in the south of America at the time I had many folks around me who didn't understand my magnetism to this song. I put it down to being open minded at the time. 42 years later, I am ok with that.
I get it. My family thought I was into something weird. Talking Heads, Gary Numan, The Flying Lizards, Lene Lovich, and the hardcore bands Big Black, Dead Kennedys, DOA. , etc
I'm really surprised this doesn't have more views. One of my fave 80s songs.
Anyone in Tempe or Phoenix AZ during this era? This song hit everyone around me like a ton of bricks. We were all switched on. The laser etched logo on the actual record got everyone excited. A friend who had just bought the album excitedly showed it to me. I was in my 20s. For me, not exactly an age of innocence. It was wild. I had a helluva lot of fun, in college, work hard, party harder, and pogo like crazy, wearing "weird" clothes, skinny ties, thrift shop 60s pointed kitten heels, cat boots, sheath, minis and drndl skirts with old toreador pants, beaded cardigans. All from the Goodwill😊. Mixed with neon colors of the 80s. Blue and green hair. Smoking cloves. We really stood out. So called straight people acted afaid of us, lol. This was all brand new. It was a very creative time as well, as friends and acquaintances formed new bands that played at new nightclubs that catered to New Wave and punk fans. Most of us loved both genres. I still dress a bit crazy. This scene was radical compared to the "in between days" throughout most of the 70s. I love this song
I was growing up in Nashville TN USA. I heard them in various outlets. In Nashville, in the mid-1980s, we had an AM radio station with a "Rock of the 80s" format. Back when radio stations had overnight staff. So one night I called to ask to hear a Split Enz album. I said I didn't care which one, just that it was Split Enz. Iris. I Wouldn't Dream of It. I Hope I Never. All I want is any and all of those.
Seeing Crowded House next month in Philly. This song started it..
Great song. I also remember "6 months in a leaky boat" by them. God, it's been so long. Where does time go?
yesterday
Neil Finn was already writing top ten hits, years before Crowded House. For some reason I was singing this song today.
Early MTV was the best. This video is a prime example.
Still at school when this came out, Fuck !! where has the 40 years gone.
My sentiments EXACTLY.
When we migrated to Australia we had to live in a hotel until we could find a proper place to live. I remember this song being played over and over on the TV. It has always stayed with me.
A true classic, we dont forget them.

I just turned 50. When I listen to these songs its like it transports me back to those days of innocence and excitement. Yes, we get older but, we are still the same goof balls that love to wear trendy 80s outfits. Our souls are still so very hyper and can belt out these notes! 💓💓💓💓
I’m 50 soon, wtf 😂I regress to my childhood listening to these geniuses
It took me 47 years to discover these band!
Entirely unique then.
Entirely unique now.
There has, and never will be another band - quite like Split Enz.
Agreed!
Except Crowded House of course!
too true!
Definitely. These guys were ‘weird’ in the best way possible.

Wish i could go back to 1980 - 81 , so much fun and no sick world
just great music and friends.
This band is the absolute bomb of the era. They are incredible and they will always be unique. They don’t follow any trend. They did what they did and it exploded.
This song just stays stuck in your head.
This song sounds from the late 80’s which is testament to how great it is
1980, not late 80's.
Neil Finn wrote this at 21. I was an idiot at 21.
I think we all were 😱😱😱

Tim was in Split Enz. You mean he wasn't in Crowded House.
This song was an MTV and other Music Video Shows of the 80s fave!!
Wow this song has really stood the test of time

This is one of the first songs I heard on 91X FM San Diego. I think they called it ''New Wave'' or ''Alternative'' or even ''Brit Pop''. I remember thinking this stuff is really good! So why isn't anyone else playing it? I never got a good answer.
Split Enz; the most underrated band of all time. They were before their time but not mine, thank God. Saw them live on their reunion tour. Loved loved it! Down with the stupid Falkland wars and Thatcher!
One of the best underrated bands of the 70s and 80s
They were!

Oh my god this brings back some great memories. I used to follow a cover band called Bystander at the Jersey shore. The lead singer passed away Friday He used to sing this song too. So sad
Condolences, god takes us to early.
First heard this song belting out the outside speaker system at a Butlins holiday camp , it’s stayed in my memory over many decades as for the holiday zero recollection
It's probably for thr best that you don't remember Butlins...
I have met this man and it was he who came up to me at a gig on the Gold Coast. Yes those days they had half time breaks like in football and me and my friends had a table near the stage and Neil came to me first and asked it we were enjoying the show. Seriously I could not believe it. Neil Finn asking me if I liked the show.
That's what a genuine bloke does.
Used to love going to shows on the Gold Coast. Went to The Playroom a lot. Saw The Cure there and the ticket was $5.00
Who remembers going to the clubs in the 80's and this song was played 😄😄
All too well. :)

A timeless classic
like your sisters sweet spot
This song defines an era so memorably that you cant help but be transported back to it if you lived through it at a time when there was so, so many classic pop songs being released.
I was in college here in the states and we didn't have time for television and a phone you could look up and play things upon, we never thought about it. We had the vinyl and we played the shit out of it. Share a joint, crank it up and listen to lps from start to finish in order and that means both sides! This is still the best way to get at the heart of the artist(s), to me.
@willdiedrich Yeah, LP's meant so much then, it was like going on a journey and reliving it over and over. True Colours was definitely an album to play over and over.
First time i heard this song, 4 of us, 2 kiwis 1 Aussie and a Yankee boy were travelling from Sydney to Cairns in an old 66 Fairlane. Radio full blast!! It was 1980, and this song came on. Didn't know who it was. Thought it might be a West Coast US band. But loved the song!! In 1980. This song was all over the radio and tv in NZ and AUS! So later found out it was Split Enz!! First heard them in Wellington NZ 1975! Back then, the word around town was, you must see this band! They are different!! - Kind of vaudevillian!! Anyway, by the end of the show. - Nobody wanted to go home!!!
About once or twice a year I go through a Split Enz period and have to listen to this and Six Months in a Leaky boat incessantly. Both songs are on my death list that I want my kids to listen to when I pass to remember me by. Thank you Split Enz for making such fantastic and memorable music ❤️
Never heard the other. I’ll ck it out.
Yep - hey kids. This is real music. Lol
I walk away is their best song.
I love the way you call it a death list, that made me giggle yes I am obsessed with this song also and I never heard it in the 80s..... Just discovered in a couple of years ago and it's one of my all-time favorite songs they are simply incredible
This is such a Dr. Jekyll - Mr. Hyde song. I go from creeped out to happy in 3 seconds! What a masterpiece in contrasting styles. I miss the 80's.
It's like something in the Twilight Zone. With the band not moving and then coming to life. Haunting . And so bloody cool
true
That is a great description
It seems to be the vampire theme of the 80s.
This gives me the chills. I am back in 1981.
Glad I grew up during this era of great music. I’m passing this off to my kids it’s not that we’re getting old the modern music sucks.
Of course. Proof of it is when 15 year olds listen to this and they say this is amazing. So many songs on this album "True Colours" are great. #6 "I Hope I Never". The two instrumentals #4 "Double Happy" and #11 "The Choral Sea". This is amazing music.
What a classic
Love this song. Brings back my youth. The chorus is awesome. Hearkens back to great bands like Badfinger, Dave Clark Five, The Monkeys, etc for me (which were slightly before my time, but I wore out my parents' 60s-70s albums.
GREAT DAYS.

This band made me a punk rocker/ new waver FOREVER. ❤❤❤❤😭😭😭😭
I remember this from being in the UK charts when I was at junior school (scarily I'm 51 now). Only reached number 12 in the UK but sounded kind of unique and futuristic at the time. A year or two later later bands like Ultravox & OMD started to copy their sound so guess they were ahead of their time and made good use of the new generation of synthesizers that had just come on the market. Had no idea they were from NZ either. It still sounds fresh and if it wasn't for historic proof I'd have placed this song as sounding as if it was from about 1985. The video doesn't look 41 years old either and videos often age the song more than the music does.
At school in Dudley aged 15 in 1980. It seems like yesterday
Reminds me of grade 7
Ultravox had Midge Ure as a replacement singer after John Foxx left. They were formed in 1976 before Split Enz.
@@martinquarton184 Split Enz was formed in 1973, originally they called themselves Split Ends. They were Split Enz by 1974.
The Basist, Nigel Griggs and the "True Colours" era drummer, Malcolm Green were Poms, picked up when the band was based in the UK in the late 70s. Most of the other members were NZers though, with the late great Paul Hester flying the flag for Australia late in the piece.
was 16 when this came out, still sounds brilliant

Hi I recommend a song and video called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
The anticipation for the forthcoming True Colours album was immense in 1980. The popularity of Split Enz had sky-rocketed to a Beatles like fever in Australia and NZ. The were the masters of the scene at that time. The "I Got You" video (film-clip) was debuted on Countdown and it took video making to another level at the time.
I just loved this when it came out. And still do!
I was fifteen when i seen these guys at the roxy on the strip, a time when the new wave was coming to america the motels, flock of seagulls. I was a drummer trying to get in a band, fun times, great memories.. good vibes to all that rock!..
