Hi Brother Rick, this song is a great example of non - computerized Rock and Roll! When you listen to it, it sounds so real, no crystal clear perfection, no Pro Tools or Pitch-Perfect correction, but it sounds great, because it's the sound of a band making music together, and interacting with each other. It's the true essence of what Rock is supposed to be about. Thanks for putting this together, it's a great example of what you(and all of us) have been trying to get people to understand. Perfection isn't the answer. It's about what is coming from your heart and soul! You are really making a difference! Lary

Hi there, I've been a HUGE fan of your channel, LITERALLY since you started. But I feel compelled to give you a small bit of constructive criticism about your latest videos: ever since you started playing guitar, you seem to often try to work in some time talking about the level of difficulty the song or album your talking about is to play, which, all due respect; I feel detracts from your content. An example: Amputechture. TMV is my favorite rock band of ALL time & I have a special sentimental attachment of sorts to that record. So needless to say I had the biggest music nerd boner going into your video about it, I enjoyed sections of it, but I really felt the 2 or so minutes you spend talking about & attempting to play Vicarious Atonement derailed any momentum the essay had has prevented me from ever wanting to re-watch the vid... & I believe the reason is: for both musicians AND non-musicians alike, You need a Rick Beato level of knowledge & insight into theory &/or years, if not decades of experience in said field to point out something neither type of fan has noticed or thought about before. Something truly new I love what you do, you inspire me, PLEASE keep making content and music!
Damn it Rick, you've surpassed my expectations. At the Drive-In getting your analysis. Thank you. Relationship of Command is one of my top ten albums. Enfilade is exceptional, the drumming on that track is amazing. It's funny that you highlighted the mixing by Andy Wallace. Omar hated the final mix of the album as he thought it didn't sound raw like ATDI, and accused Wallace of over mixing and over polishing the band's sound. I've had friends hear this album who said it's just chaos and loud noise. I keep telling them to listen to each track by tuning in on one instrument, then again with another. When you then listen as a whole each track is amazing and you appreciate the craftmanship behind it.
In college jazz class we learned to listen for the instrumentation first; that’s why Tom Morello’s imprint of ‘Guitars’ on their records was when digitech whammy and technology took over.
Hey Rick, great contrast from your How Computers Ruined Rock Music video. Honestly, this is not my favorite genre, but I love the way you highlight the flow of energy between the musicians... it’s what I love most about music. So refreshing. You’re a one-of-kind, Rick. Rick compares the track at the end to Nirvana in terms of energy, and I also hear Pixies influences in the guitar parts and meter changes (naturally, given Cobain's influences). The reason Nirvana and the Pixies sell crap tons of records to this day is, of course, those catchy damn vocal melodies.
I loved this video, it also shows how when ATDI splitted, they distilled both parts of the formula on Sparta and The Mars Volta, TMV got all the psychedelic and spatial angst sound while Sparta got the punk intensity and thrust.
I’ve been listening to this song for over 20 years and never noticed before this video all the details, guitar tracks, tuning... AMAZING! Thank you Rick, I love your channel
Since this song came out I had been married twice to two different women and both of them hated this song with a passion. So awesome that you added it to your series. I've loved this song since the minute I first heard that intro from a comp CD we got at the station I worked at back then.

They had a HUGE underground following and she turned me onto them. Mars Volta was great as well but a much different beast. *I forgot to mention that SPARTA was a really cool off shoot from At the Drive In.

@@anthonybernero9720 I understand, man. Mars Volta wasn't a sound for everyone. I dug them but my musical taste included a lot of weird off the wall stuff before their 1st album came out so it appealed to me. You used a good word there..."Annoyed" I can totally see some listeners being very annoyed by their vibe/sound. That makes total sense.
Favorite part of this vid is how you give love to the drums and bass-they make ATDI groove like no other punk band. My hope is that you listened to the next track on the album (Sleepwalk Capsules). Paul plays a phenomenal syncopated bass line during the chorus that’s similar in vibe to what he plays during the bridge of this song.
What a video! What a song!! This made me feel the same way I felt back then when the song was released. I had no idea that the song was recorded live, but it makes total sense, given its brutal and visceral drive. Amaaazing band!!!

The Brave Little Abacus captures this feeling so well.
Always such a shame. Looking at the full collections, I preferred Sparta's over Mars Volta. That being said though, Deloused is one of my favorite albums of all time, Volta had the higher high I guess but Sparta never put out anything bad.
Our sense of “in-tune” is largely shaped by western equal temperament, which is a compromise system. Exploring the in between space between semi-tones is really the last unexplored space in harmony and melody. I am enjoying the blending of non-western tuning concepts into so called popular styles. Thanks for your fun breakdowns of these songs.
I remember the first time I heard this song in high school around 2000 and being blown away how different yet brilliant it was. It’s aggressive and attacking but plaintive, and discordant and distorted but melodic all wrapped up in weird proggy time changes and all of it feels like it shouldn’t work and yet it all come together in a brilliant package
So refreshing to hear bleeds and timing, tuning "issues", this is how music is!!! its not perfect or meant to be perfect. I get it that some music needs total perfection but this is awesome
At the Drive-in along with The Mars Volta (Cedric and Omar are geniuses) are two of my favorite bands. Didn't know you had this one in your locker, Rick. Excellent choice!
My son, a musician himself, was on to ATDI in his teens. Later he introduced me to TMV and I as blown away. He didn’t tell me about ATDI until years later. I saw the re-union tour vid and as before I was blown away. Both bands have musical genius that is so unique, with controlled kaos and incredible song writing. It’s time to dissect a Mars Volta tune!
Yes! The anthem to my college freshman year! Thanks, Rick. I always love the raw-yet-polished feel of "One Armed Scissor" (and also other At the Drive-In's songs) and you dissect it very beautifully here.
I bought this album when it came out. I've always loved it. Barely controlled chaos and energy. After all these years you come along and show me some little nuances that I didn't know about. Thanks Rick. That was amazing.
One of my all time favourite albums, thank you for doing this one.. So great to hear the individual tracks as the playing is so not normal on lots of Omars parts.
this is my favorite beato video, just because its one of my favorite songs ever (since 8th grade in 2002ish). thank you for doing this one!! seriously a masterpiece.
Thanks for taking a look at this track! The whole album is amazing, an absolute masterpiece of early 00s post-hardcore. I'm not sure theres a single bad track on there, but this and Pattern Against User are definite highlights.
Much appreciated Rick! This album totally surprised me in the early 2000's. So glad this made an impression on you and your ability to break it down and teach us about At the Drive In. Great video!!!
Please do The Smiths - How soon is now. How exactly Marr's did the guitar effects and the production in general would be very interesting. BTW - awesome channel and content! Thanks.
sitting here on my chair, it's almost 2 pm, went down into the rabbit hole that is this series. man what a ride. the sheer joy. so many memories of concerts and doing music with my pals. wew. thank you rick. this is bliss
I loved you take on On Armed Scissor. That song got me into this band and have listened to them regularly since. Had the pleasure to see them live as well. Great job breaking it down. Love your work.
Rick, great to see the appreciation this band and their album rightly deserves. So many videos on now discredit ATDI stating no one will remember them. I completely disagree. While late 90’s pop and nu-metal dominated the airwaves, this was different, unlike anything I’d heard before. The song hits you like a punch in the chest whilst throughout subverting traditional song structures. I never knew that guitar part had an accent octave effect as in the mix you don’t hear it. Invalid Letter Department is another great example of their work. The guitar lines are amazing, lyrics almost nauseating and that powerful, heavy outro is just sublime. Love how you deconstructed this song and proved it is brilliant, despite being described by many critics as just disorganised noise.
I love that with your depth of musical knowledge, education and jazz understanding, that you always find the gems in all kinds of music, and you haven't forgotten how to just dig a great song!! I have been going back to a lot of 90's/00's music recently and hearing cool things like this that didn't stand out back then. Thanks for what you do!!
Things i noticed: The tracks themselves have bleed, but if you stack and mix them accordingly, they legit cancel out. Those detuned guitars I legit have never noticed (and i play this on full blast so gotdamn often) Cedric and Omar are mad geniuses. Thank you rick. I knew this song is good, but I never knew it was that good.
For intensity I don't think you can get more than Cosmonaut off the album. Just an absolute banger, fearsome and inspiring. If only they'd been able to keep the wheels on their bandwagon
This song alone defined my love for music and was the introduction to my love for the post hardcore genre. This video just makes me appreciate the song so much more.
Rick, every time your new video comes up I feel you chose a song from my collection of favorites. Thanks Rick. Your videos are educational and fun. More Pearl Jam please. Thanks.
I love the fact that Rick is fascinated by different musical genres (as the true music lover that he is). Experiencing the joy that shines through his videos is truly beautiful, especially when he's air drumming to the tune! :) Wonderful episode, Rick. Thank you so much for the immense work, man!
George W Kush bro can’t remember well where the song was but i’m pretty sure was from the original playlist that comes by default. Notice that i’m talking about the Wii version😂
I’ve listened to this song so many times and somehow never realized how unconventional the structure is. It just flows so well. Thanks for the breakdown, Rick!

Always such a shame. Looking at the full collections, I preferred Sparta's over Mars Volta. That being said though, Deloused is one of my favorite albums of all time, Volta had the higher high I guess but Sparta never put out anything bad.
@@timvotta1111Deloused is their only good record, to me. Wiretap Scars trumps their entire catalog. Just saying.
He was definitely an important part of atdi.
Gotta say ATDI is way better than everything they did separately combined
I agree. Always liked Sparta more than Mars Volta when they split. These guys all make great music though.
Can we please get some Dillinger next?!
Hahaha, I would love to hear 43% Burnt. It'd just be a lot of shrugging and saying I have no idea what the fuck is going on here.
@@gregmoore3345 I'd love love any DEP broken down. You could pick from any album and I'd be stoked.
Do some d4 and some naked raygun and I would be a very happy person
MONA LISA, or ONE OF US IS THE KILLER
@@babylonastronaut This comment was about Dillinger Escape Plan, but I would also be down with Dillinger Four.
I actually really love how you break these things down and analyze and explain quite a lot when it comes to songs.
Rick, you're an inspiration. We need more Rick's in this world, keep on doing this, my faith in music is coming back. We need you!
You completely left out all Jim Wards vocals. HALF THE YELLING IS JIM.
Whenever I hear that song, I just can't help but yell "CUT AWAAAAAY, CUT AWAAAAAAAY"! I'm sure my neighbours are thrilled.
"Relationship of Command" slays me to this day. Undeniable rock masterpiece.
I would also love to see an episode of WMTSG about Change (In The House of Flies) by Deftones.
big fan
Yes! That would be awesome!
IMHO Digital Bath, Knife Party or Passenger would be better picks off that album
Passenger even
Anything from White Pony would be great
You never know what you're going to get with this series but you know it's going to be good!
Thanks.
Seconded.
Fourthed lol
sitting here on my chair, it's almost 2 pm, went down into the rabbit hole that is this series. man what a ride. the sheer joy. so many memories of concerts and doing music with my pals. wew. thank you rick. this is bliss
Please Jeff Buckley - Grace
Faith No More - Evidence
Gustavo Cerati - Lago en el cielo
A lot of unbelievable details in the production of these songs.
All shitty songs
@@mikebarnes7441 Wrong.
I loved you take on On Armed Scissor. That song got me into this band and have listened to them regularly since. Had the pleasure to see them live as well. Great job breaking it down. Love your work.
I loved this episode. One of my favorites. I now want you to do one on Fugazi.
I see a respected musician/engineer talk about At the drive in/the Mars volta, I immediately subscribe
Things i noticed:
The tracks themselves have bleed, but if you stack and mix them accordingly, they legit cancel out.
Those detuned guitars I legit have never noticed (and i play this on full blast so gotdamn often)
Cedric and Omar are mad geniuses.
Thank you rick. I knew this song is good, but I never knew it was that good.
One of the best rock albums of all time easily. Thank you so much for making this video
For intensity I don't think you can get more than Cosmonaut off the album. Just an absolute banger, fearsome and inspiring. If only they'd been able to keep the wheels on their bandwagon
Badass track for sure
Works like these turn my knowledge of sound engineering upside down again. Love AtDi so much
More than excellent. One of my favourite songs.
Key words: visceral and progressive-Nirvana.
Thanks, Rick. Best regards from Spain.
Creo que fueron los últimos Nirvana. Desde ahí el rock de guitarras crudas murió
Wonderful episode, Rick. Thank you so much for the immense work, man!
Haha yeah!!!
Remember playing this on Guitar Hero World tour🤘🏻
Rick please make a video about deftones or Interpol!!
Both great bands!!
Fuck yeah!
Deftones - Be Quiet And Drive or Change
Interpol - Obstacle 1 or Narc
Was this a bonus track/DLC or the main set list? I can't believe I don't remember this from the game
George W Kush bro can’t remember well where the song was but i’m pretty sure was from the original playlist that comes by default.
Notice that i’m talking about the Wii version😂
someone trying to explain music is the most boring thing in the world but listening to you is pure pleasure
Loved this. One of the bands that doesn’t get enough love.
I’ve listened to this song so many times and somehow never realized how unconventional the structure is. It just flows so well. Thanks for the breakdown, Rick!
A whole lot of Cedric's songs end up in triple meters. I always assumed that was down to the huge Latin jazz influence
Ross ALWAYS that rawness. Have you ever sat back and listened to their earlier albums? NO? DO IT! Love ya Rick
I ordered this cd. Can't wait to hear more of these guys.
I've been listening to this song for decades and this video actually made me appreciate the song even more
Consider digital bath by deftones please 😁
I almost did that for this episode!
🖤
Please, consider it for a future video!
Harrison Mortley ?
@@RickBeato PLEEEAAAASSSSEEEE do Digital Bath!!! Strong contender for my favourite song ever. Just typing this comment makes me now need to listen to it.
All these years. And, it still one of my favorite songs and albums ever
When I hear music like this, I wonder if I'll ever be able to achieve such a thing. Truly amazing. Seriously though, check out Relationship of Command; one of my most favourite albums!
I can't believe I haven't seen this video until now!!!! I love both this series AND the band! Great content. Always a pleasure watching these vids!
Rick, I'd really love to see one of these in depth analysis of Mars Volta mixes! They're such weird mixes!!!
Loved this song as a kid. I remember watching it the video on MTV and it blew me away🤩I loved the “CUT AWAY CUT AWAY” part. Also a big fan of Mars Volta.
Amazing vid, thanks! What a great learning resource, your interpretation makes me excited!
