In the late 1980s, Anthony Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) enlists as a Marine, training in boot camp under a sadistic drill instructor. Swofford undertakes a sniper course headed by Staff Sgt. Sykes (Jamie Foxx) during this time, which is shortly before the advent of the Gulf War. I love how he was testing Swofford on his ability to take embarrasment, and the other Marines on their ability to hold in a laugh.
I think they all passed that. Shame that Swofford screwd up on Christmas Eve.
He wanted to humiliate Swofford because he didnt show much interest in becoming a sniper, but jumped at the opportunity to play the bugle
he was recruited from the toilet seat. this part was just gravy.
“I love that tone. Sounds good to me. My morale is lifted.”
"Goood, that's a classic!"
“You don’t have a wha…. Oh damn damn damn…” lol
The perfect combo of military bearing and comedy 🤣🤣🤣
There is no difference
Gotta love Jamie Foxx, he was pretty convincing as a Marine Staff sgt.
Jamie got Range,I remember he was talking about breaking down the blueprint of Playing Ray Charles,he good that boi good 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Yes and no
You know he was practicing this when he was in from of the mirror.
That sounded pretty good actually for a mouth beagle.
Mouth beagle lmao
@@DetectiveTrupo203He meant bugle.
@@Capcoorwe know 😂
@@deagle2yadome696 I wasn’t sure.
Lmao i love how Jamie Foxx is the only guy who do comedy and can pull this seriousness in a hilarious scene
Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket had similar chops
Agreed on both Fox and Ermey. I’d also add Vince Vaughn in Hacksaw Ridge.
@@mikez4073 My opinion on Vince Vaughn changed after that film.
LMAO the look on Swafford's face when he realizes that this whole thing was an ambush. Memories of basic.
Bro thought it was actually gonna be bugle tryouts😂😂😂
"Private Swofford reporting for bugle tryouts, sir!"
I bet all their smiles at 1:24 wasn't even acting, lol.
1:20 Seconds in, I'd be on the floor!
Mysterio and Electro😂😂
Yep
Jamie Foxx owned that role sheet I almost started doing push ups
Underrated part is when he calmly eyes the staff sergeant.
Why was it underrated?
@@lman1006 Because it looks cool and no one mentions it.
I am still here
STAFF SGT*
@@travissgrey Thanks.
this scene implies a lof of military culture.. things about improvise.. especially in marine corps of course I guess? I didn't know at that time when I was watching a movie..
Jamie Foxx is a Very good actor, then he played an Elite Steath Pilot a Year Later 👌
0:50 on the top right he is trying hard to hold it in
Absolutely nailed Stevie Wonder!
JF could have been an incredible SGT Johnson in the halo show. Yet another missed casting
There is a show about Halo? Hollywood is completely out of ideas.
@@otten5666 yes. it's on paramount plus and it sucks.
@@otten5666 Yeah, and it's as good as you can imagine.
Mysterio and Electro, before they became Spider-Man villains.
"I dont have a bugle staff seargant..."
"you better play it witcha mouth"
(jarhead-2005)
Probably to test their composure (important in snipers).
not to hard not to soft just perfect :P
Why did he SAY” indoc atten hutt! “and they all stamped the floor?
They didn’t stomp the floor the moved from parade-rest to the position of attention
Anybody notice the Tactal Air Command badge on the water tower? Air Force.
Mysterio and Electro served together
I wonder if Jamie Foxx would've auditioned for the cancelled 2000s Halo movie that Peter Jackson wanted to do?
He would have been awesome.
@@Heliosphan33 Jamie Foxx as Sgt Johnson, and Mark Harmon as Captain Keyes would've defiantly been on my "essential actors" list if I was making a 2000s Halo movie. What a shame it was never made.
@@johnnyjohn-johnson7738Fox is too young to play Johnson.
@@codedxxx I disagree, Johnson is supposed to look young for an old man because of proto Spartan experiments that were done on him in his youth. Jamie Foxx when this was made looks pretty much like how he looked in Halo 2 (Johnson started ageing in halo 3 because the war finally took it's tole on him).
He has good pitch.
Jamie fox is a geeeee in every role
Across both hands
Jamie Flash could’ve been a DI
1:40-1:59, 2:02, 2:09-2:10
If you didn’t watch this movie before going to Basic… did you even serve??
😂😂😂😂
Saw this in theaters when released - it was about 18 months after I got out of the Marines myself. I watched plenty of movies back then but had no idea who Jamie Foxx was - I saw Collateral the previous year but didnt recognize him at that point. Anywho, when I saw this movie - Foxx was so damn good I thought they actually pulled in an actual USMC Drill Instructor for the film - I know it happens, (Full Metal Jacket for example). I had a drill instructor myself, SSgt Anton McCole, black dude from St. Louis - Foxx absolutely reminded me of him. Bravo Jamie Foxx!!!
Foxx is about the only actor in this movie that was sort-of believable. There were so many crimes and court-martial offenses in this film. It's too bad so many people think this is how the real Marine Corps works or any branch of Armed Services. This scene is a good example, for instance, where are Swofford's duty papers? Some rando DS/commanding officer doesn't just come up and ask if you want to try out for some platoon of whatever.
@@sarcasticguy4311 yeah the movie is "based on a true story" - Swofford's autobiography I think. Personally haven't read it but it would be interesting to read the book and watch the movie and see how far they stray
@@timberanvil3788 Jarhead is like Full Metal Jacket. It's like every horrible military story you've ever heard has been rolled in to a single platoon. I was thinking about watching it again and writing down all the crimes and offenses that would either get them landed in Leavenworth or dishonorably discharged.
The 'branding' scene is a perfect example. Everyone involved in that would've been dishonorably discharged at minimum.
@@sarcasticguy4311dude shut up. People in the marines have done tons of stuff they never got in trouble for. You sound like one of those people that nitpick every little thing about a movie that isn’t perfect. This movie isn’t a biography of the Marine corps and that’s ok.
@@southsidesaiyan8641 "Shut up"? Screw off. This movie is fictional garbage. Learn some reality.
what did he say in 0:11, i cant hear clear
“Indoc A Ten hut”
They move from Rest Position to attention
“ Inducted,Attention!”
So how does the marine corps band select their players?
I like how he said play with jamal.
The few, the stupid
Fianlly found the sample for the song
The Baddest by Warface. Legendary
My guy thought about his girlfriend cheating then got asked to go to "bugle tryouts"
In the book this didn't happen
Bashenga commander bis
Idk, as funny as this is, not accurate anymore. Most units may do 1 formation a week to pass word where you actually get to attention etc. 90% of the time in the fleet it’s just school circle. Drill is like… non existent after boot camp in the Marine Corps. Also that looks nothing like camp pendleton. And this unit (2/7) is at mcagcc 29 palms not camp pendleton in real life.
There's an old school Air Force Tactical Air Command badge on that water tower. I have no idea where they filmed this.
Nah, Marines are born and they are twisted as heck, you don't want to provoke one of them crazy leathernecks lol, I wish i was a Marine, but I scored too high on the SVAB test.
Shouldn't he say "This Recruit"? Not "I"?
No, he's a fleet Marine at this point.
🍿 where they shoot the scenes 💛
Kenny G 😂
God Kingdom 💛
It's a funny scene for sure, but I don't quite get the end. Did the staff sergeant decide on the spot to enroll him in the sniper program, because he's shown some determination and fortitude? What's going on here?
Staff sergeant decided to enroll him in the sniper program because he heard about private swofford fighting off multiple marines at the same time when he thought they was going to brand him. Staff sergeant already knew he had the potential to be a sniper so he asked swofford to participate in it and swofford was pretending to be sick so he told him about bugle tryouts and he came to enroll in it, but it turned out to be a trap to lure him into the sniper program.
Literally analysis time.
Why does the Bugle scene exist?
He is a boot. Slightly nervous about joining the unit so he fakes SIQ.
Then gets invited out to this mess.
From that point on its at sniper school he was already in? Just
Plot wise, and analysis wise i dont get it. All i get was that he had hesitation about joining and SSGT embarrassed him for motivation?
Don't hurt yourself overthinking it.
Swofford probably wasn’t the first indecisive boot graduate the Ssgt had encountered. He gave him a kick in the rear in a certain direction and made some use of him. I imagine this also knocked some sense into Swofford and brought him back to reality.
My dad smacked the absolute hell out of me today lmao
What
Well, hopefully you took it like a man and learned your lesson.
Excellent movie
LMAOOO one of the funniest movie scenes ever.
Is this what the Marines do?.....Makes me glad I was in the US ARMY!.....yar!
You people do realize this movie was a fantasy right? swofford is not and never was a Marine Scout/Sniper so that's a lie. Everything in this movie is BS and how do I know? I was there that's how swofford is a liar. Also, our platoon sergeant was a white guy from the south by the way.
Yet we know Swofford’s story and nobody knows yours.
Ok brainiac you don't know swoffords story what you know is a bunch of lies but then again stupid people like you are easily satisfied @@codedxxx
And you were with who? And this movie is made after you?
2/7 STA Platoon SSgt Seick was our platoon sergeant. Wasn't made about me swofford was a guy in our platoon that should never have been there. He did not meet the physical qualifications for our platoon but they let him in because we were short people when we headed to the Gulf War
