  • In this video we show the viewers how to install solar panels onto a box/enclosed cargo trailer. Whether you're building a makeshift camping rig, a quick "bugout" trailer to carry essentials and have mobile power, or maybe you run a business that requires you to charge batteries, use a fridge, microwave food, run lighting fixtures, etc... This video will show you how to tackle the solar installation portion. Check our channel for the additional videos on how to wire in lithium batteries, inverters, and how to run wiring for specific applications. This is getting more and more popular as people are finding new uses for mobile power systems and we are frequently asked to do these installations for our customers so we thought it would be relevant. We will be outfitting and building out our enclosed trailer to make a more comfortable "tent camping" water/power station but the principles we will discuss and the way to install and wire all of the components are the exact same regardless of what you choose to use your trailer for!

Love the channel just found you guys when I was searching up switching from lead acid to lithium batteries. So I went to check other subjects and saw this one. I’m ready to pull the trigger on increasing my travel, trailer, Solar, and through all the other videos I watched, no one had mentioned about the unusual weather circumstances, and allowing no more than about 80% for the charge controller. What I was looking at, was going to get me right up to the edge, which would have been potentially a mess in the future. I’m in the process of changing my rooftop air conditioner for a power vent and installing a mini split with the outside unit on the rear bumper. I would like to put two levels of solar panel, one permanent and one layer, sliding out the front and back of the travel trailer to basically double my solar capacity. I was looking at using aluminum super strut but now I think I’ll also look at the method you used and see if I can adapt it for a raised application.
Do you have any other suggestions that might make this an easier project?
I want to say thank you again for the videos you’ve put out that I’ve seen. And I look forward to watching more of yours.

Thank you for the feedback! We have seen a few retractable double stacked arrays on bus conversions but we've never designed or installed one so I'm not much help in that department unfortunately...

At 20:20 it would be great to have a insulating bushing, to prevent road vibration and potentially sharp edges from the drilled hole from shorting the panels over time. Really great video overall though. 👍

You can definitely do that if you'd like! We wire loom the wires from the inside and that keeps the wires from touching the metal edge.

What wattage were the solar panels?
