I’ll have to watch this video again since it’s hard for me to listen and take notes. Good information for us to have especially if we want to upgrade our system or if we’re going on a trip. I’m older so it’s hard to lift stuff. I know I can’t lift batteries but hopefully I could get help when I’m camping. It’s sure hard since hubby is not around cause he was so helpful with these kind of things. He was good with computers. He could build stuff too. My dad’s talent was working on cars and he could build campers plus he could cook. Dad was a jack of all trades and master of none except cars. He also worked for companies that installed sheet metal for ductwork in attics. But for whatever reason he didn’t seem to want to live in one place until he got older. Thank you for putting out this video on solar panels etc. 👍

Brian, I just returned from a week-long boondocking trip. I took your advice, bought a Renolgy 200-watt suitcase, and paired it up with my 100Ah battery. I used all of my campers' 12-volt features, Alde heater, and fridge. lights and audio. I never even came close to the limit of my battery. The solar panels topped off my battery easily in 2-3 hours and I had 2 cloudy days but it only took a little longer for it to charge. Thanks for the advice. You're the bomb

Glad to read this @MikeLoper. Every year we boondock for 6-8 days at a pop and do it at least twice. We have other trips that are 3-4 days long. Our camper has an electric or propane fridge as they draw very little power when run on propane. The events we attend where we are boondocking have showers and port-potties. So we really only use the battery to run the fridge on propane. To see you ran a 12V fridge (a known energy hog from the research I've done) and were still okay is good news for sure!

After a half dozen "beginner" videos I came across this one. You said more, and more clearly, in 20 minutes than all the others put together. You have a talent for boiling it down to relatively easy to understand material. I did have to listen to the last 5 minutes several times for the new info to gel into the summation. Plus, you have a good voice and tonal changes to keep me interested and awake. Thank you!!

lol 🎉😂 I know and I’m a female solo van lifer just starting out in 2019 Ford Transit 250 High Roof ExT Van. Used to be an Amazon prime van. Help omg this I understand thank you but still I don’t know hmm I have Bluetti ac200max generator either (3) separate 100watt panels. Live in Florida (hot hot). I bought small fridge (like cooler) and looking to use my laptop, 32 inch tv, portable air conditioner (not sure which I’m still trying to figure that out) string of LED lights, ofc a digital hot plate. Do I use bluetti extension cords n other cable or wte? Or with that mppt I just found a few on amazon. I’ll read more in comments AND ILL COME TO YOU help lol 😅😊

@@kristinakelley4683 Just read your comment and I'll try to help. Always use thick gauge extension cords 6 or 8 Gauge. Add wattage of components together to know amount of energy being used. You can look on the manuals that come with the item IE: fridge ,laptop etc. or look online the exact item you have and find the wattage for that particular item add totals or buy a kill-a-watt electric monitor from Harbor Freight Tool. Learn how to set-up your mppt IE: max and min settings to cut out so as not to drain the battery or overcharge the battery as some charge controllers are junk. Also use a grounding rod with any generating device you use IE: Buletti or generator. Hint here; use inverter generators for sensitive electronic IE: laptop, tv's etc. If You ever max out energy wise use the highest energy consuming device alone so as not to trip out and shut down your generating device. Good advice here: aways unplug extension cords from generating device first before shutting off the generating device. Keep watching this channel for more knowledge ,it'll all fall in place one day. I hope this helps some. Just a random camper learning the ropes too! Happy trails!!!

This panel can put out close to 100 watts ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle. The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts. If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

I want to share an update on my solar install. Renergy 175w solar panel, 30 amp inline stick fuse, go-power pwm 30 controller, optima agm 55ah battery. After studying your videos this is what I think fills my needs to maintain my system between my 3-4 camp day trips. The hardest part of this install was pulling the coiled zip tied factory installed cables out of the controller size hole we cut in front wall. The most stressful part was drilling the pilot holes in a new camper roof to solid mount the panel. Roof mounted connectors are factory prepped. Thank you Brian for your simple information videos that helped me decide what basic design I need and helping me find the confidence that this is a doable, driveway DIY project.

Thanks for this information.... I'm in the process of building a new Teardrop. Trailer. Being older than dirt (73'). My partner and I no longer have to consider the kids or grand kids as they are grown and really don't want to be seen with the "Oldies" (LOL) As an ex-bump and paint guy and after 9 years US Army (Vietnam 2/502 Inf. 101st Airborne) I'm doing an extreme kitchen (my wife was a chief), so we have LP for our fridge, stove and oven... I hooked up 12 volt for 85% of everything else, but I also have an Air conditioner (Australia) ... and microwave ... nice post. Brian you are a natural on camera! I used to do the same thing in math class with my calculator haha. This is really good info about overcharging equipment without the right charge controlling devices. Not actually being a math or scientifically minded person, I would have never actually considered the capacity of battery versus banking the voltage of energy. This really is a perfect 101 Tutorial!! I feel like I could succeed at not destroying a power bank without the proper charge controlling advices. It sort of gives me thoughts about the musical equipment and sound amplifiers I use at home. Not as delicate as this equipment you’re showing us, but I can relate it to what I already know.. especially when it comes to petty theft and set up charges!! Haha awesome video again Brian

Modular is the way to go; have both fixed and portable. With quick disconnects you can choose which system is in use. Portable panels are less efficient than 'real' hard framed panels so there are trade offs with each system. A properly angled portable panel may still no put-out as much as a non-angled 'real' panel that isn't angled. Light bar clamps are a great way to affix a panel across the rails; no roof drilling. Just be sure the width of the panel doesn't over the fan lid. Having two options I think is the way to go. One is none, two is one. Thanks for the great videos.

Nice, the thunderbolt series gets very mixed reviews. The biggest complaint is that it’s enormous for the amount of power it delivers. The most common model connects four large 25 watt panels. If the size and weight is not an issue, the HF panel does deliver the rated power.

I just did a weekend trip camping on my dual battery (group 24) setup. So 80ah usable 160ah max. With the wife using the inverter to watch TV both nights for an hour or so, the batteries managed but may have been a bit depleted by the final day. So I'm definitely going to consider a portable solar panel system. Set up when needed for off grid and the ability to chase the sun if the trailer is parked in the shade. Think 100-200w would/should be plenty.

    • @DIYOutdoorLife
      @DIYOutdoorLife  Рік тому +3

The solar will make a huge difference. Your situation with the TV is very common. Another tip that people have had a lot of success with, is switching to a DC TV. The 12VDC televisions use so much less battery than running through the inverter that people often find it's cheaper to replace the TV than the cost of upgrading their battery or solar. Since you're close, I would start with the solar, but it's worth considering.
      Thanks for watching!

Great presentation. I bought a Yeti 200X and paired it with 2-20W GZ portable panels. This allows me and my buddies power for phones, tablets and notebooks. I also purchased a Yeti 1500X and three 100W Boulder briefcase panels to keep my home fridge cool if (when) we have a power outage. But then I added a portable fridge because it runs off the 12VDC outlet, more efficient than running off the 120 V AC outlets. Also, using the portable fridge helps avoid opening the home fridge during the day.

@@DIYOutdoorLife oh, I would like to share one other reason to "consider" oversized the solar panels.
With the Yeti X you can use the battery while you charge the battery. So during the day, while charging the battery you may use and charge other things like a laptop computer. With a targeted ratio on solar panel to battery, you can replenish the battery during the day and that many watt-hours are available until the next morning. But with some extra solar you can run things during the day while charging the battery for the nighttime use.
My own target, in the Mid-Atlantic area, is 20% of the battery watt-hours in panels. For my Yeti 1500X that indicates 300W of panels. Using the 70% estimate, it would take 7.5 hours of "good sun" to recharge the Yeti to 100% from near zero. Of course we try not to run our batteries below 15% and the last 15% charge at the top takes longer, so it won't be exactly 7.5 hours.

    G'day from Australia.
I live on my 27 ft sailing boat.
I have a 300 watt solar panel, and a 300 watt wind turbine.
300 watts seems to be the maximum to recharge my 500 watt and 1500 watt power stations.
There's only 5 hours of peak charge from sunlight, so my batteries have to recharge in
so you should be buying in that
time frame to recharge the batteries.
The two combos go through an mppt 30 amp daul controller and two separate controllers. One for solar and the other for the wind turbine providing a 12 volt direct current. Together both systems work well togetther 24 / 7 in all kinds of weather.
    Gerard live aboard on
