I’ve been trying to locate the clunk or shake over the smallest of road bumps for past year or two. It started gradually just annoying, Then progressively got worse to get my attention, I’ve replaced tires, had a better ride but the vibration was still there, replaced some bump stops that were bad, which may have been a partial minor issue. Recently replaced the shocks. Had actually bought new tie rods but haven’t installed yet as later I was told the factory ones weren’t the problem, Now I’m beginning to think my original inclination was spot on that it was the steering column or shaft. As it’s just as you described, Over small bumps the vibration is like you are driving over railroad tracks, then when I’m on a smooth asphalt it will drive almost perfectly, Especially with new tires and shocks. I believe I will look closer at the drive shaft replacement.

I have the same problem. I think i may have just found the problem. Ive replaced my control arms and ball joints because it was also due to noticeable damage on leaking boots and cracked bushing. Guess what the noise is still there. Now, this is exactly the same noise when steering left to right other than on smooth straights are definitely familiar with my issue. Gonna look into it. Hope i can solve this without going to a mechanic.
you've been driving the car for years, like that I just experienced it and I took it to the shop over a night so they can get to it first thing in the morning
I have a question I have a 2006 chevy malibu i change every thing on my front end New struts new rack opinion every thing is tight but there still a clean clung it's probably the intermediate shaft right
I have noticed the clunking on my 2002 Chevy Express Van for the last year and took it into the repair shop. We spent $4000 worth of repairs but it was still clunking. I found this video and told them I figured it out and shared this video, but they just told me the intermediate steering shaft is fine and that my van is just old and sounds like that. Is it bad to drive around with it clunking?
Yep. He reversed the likelihood that it's more likely the bearing, than the shaft- not the other way around. He suprisingly failed to mention that if you are going to replace the shaft, for another 40 bucks while it is out, definitely replace the plastic bearing! JS
My Blazer RS 2019 is doing a Knocking sound coming from the steering wheel, but only when i turn the car on, and happens for some time, in a steady frequency, then it stops. Like a "motor" trying to engage on something ... hard to tell. I can feel the "thumps" on the steering wheel, no lights coming on the dash, nothing acting weird.... :(
I have a 2016 gmc 2500hd denali duramax, when im on dirt roads fairly bumpy ones, i can hear and feel something loose orca rattle in i rhink its the steering, its got 115,000 miles on it
+@sativa3819 We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
My Chevy Malibu is doing this exact thing!!! When I'm on the a rigid highway there is something in my steering wheel that rattling as well. It's scary. Is this dangerous?
Mine (05 Escalade) only clunks when stationary. It does have some loose feeling play when steering while driving but no clunking unless stationary. Any thoughts?
Same here bro on my 00 Silverado I got a 6 inch lift and when I’m driving it feels loose like I can literally move my steering whee side to side without the truck moving just has some extra play and when I’m parked and I turn my wheel I hear a noise so I’m pretty sure it’s the same problem as yours
I have a rubbing noise when I turn the steering wheel like when I’m backing up. It’s kind of like a moaning sound but it’s steers fine and it’s got plenty of Power steering fluid.
GM's are junk. Got my first ever Gm with only 112k on the clock and it needs all sorts of new parts. All my old F150's never needed so much work. Ford >>>> GM

Was exactly the problem. Intermediate shaft was the cause of the noise. Thank you 1A Auto.

What if it clunks at the end of the steering rotation?

When turning to the right sounds like a rubbing or thumping noise on front driver side. But only when turning to the right
Installing an aftermarket Borgeson intermediate steering shaft and a Wolff engineering steering column bearing will fix this issue.
2015 gmc canyon with the same noise.. thanks for the tip. Wish i could find an honest mechanic in the area.

Is the symptom a mild random clicking noise that happens at random times? Feels like a dry or noisy ball bearing?
My clunk was the upper intermediate bearing not the shaft , if you're doing the shaft do the bearing ant the same time

Unfortunately I replaced it with the shaft off of your website was good for less than 3000 miles and came back

I have a Chevy Malibú Maxx 2004 AND have that noise! Did you have a video of Chevy's of that year???
The problem is the cast upper or lower shafts and NOT the $4 plastic shaft bearing??
Good video
Thank you Mark! We appreciate it
Just got done watching the video I have a 94 GMC it does make that clunking sound only when it's in 4-wheel drive what could be the problem

Same. Feels like I’m landing a plane
All my duramaxes have made that noise from brand new. It’s a Chevy thing.
Do y’all have a phone number to call direct to order a part? Can’t find it on the website!

Thx…
I think it's more the plastic bushing thing
That kind of sound the same as my 2001 ford expedition...
I drive a dodge Dakota that does one single loud clunk when I brake or turn
Control arm bushings
I have similar symptoms on my 2013 CTS V sedan. Hoping it's the same issue since gm haha.

I have a clunking noise when I go to reverse or drive. Thought it was the u joints but didn’t seem fix it replacing them. What could it be ?
Ball joints or inner or outer tie rods. ?
that’s ur transmission bro

Wildhog32 it could just be the way your car sounds due to reverse gears having kind of a whining sound to them when in reverse
Holy Savior It makes that rubbing or moaning sound when I make big steering wheel turns frontward also when I maneuvering to park and such
@@wildhog3217 I have that in my gmc. Did you find the cause? Driving me crazy.
