Father Casey if Franciscans hadn’t adapted to society we wouldn’t be listening to you right now. I think that would be a loss. I struggle with my faith sometimes. Being able to listen to your lectures is so helpful. Perhaps it is the virtues that Francis cultivated that must be the common thread through the centuries. Humility and kindness. Authenticity, compassion, empathy.

Saints Francis & Clare of Assisi, have many sons and daughters. I've latched on St. Anthony of Padua, St. Joseph of Cupertino & especially St. Padre Pio of Petrelcina, or should I say, they have latched on to me.
The Benedictines, Franciscans, Carmelites, Dominicans, Salesians, Harolds of the Gospel & the Jesuits are all great to.

But Mary? While she was blessed by God, perhaps more than any other woman in history, she is still right now what our Lord is not. Dead. Leave the woman who’s been dead for nearly 2000 years alone and pray in the name of our risen Lord!

I went to Italy in 2006. When I went to the church his relics and remains are kept in Assisi, his cloaks were so simple, humble, and poor looking. I eventually went down to the what is the basement, and his remains are kept in a casket inside of a stone box that sits in the middle of a small pillar in the middle of a small room, with a single knealer in front of it. Nothing flashy. Nothing that draws attention to it. Nothing that glorifies him as a man, but honors the way he lived; humble, simple, and poor because to him the Lord came first and so did others.
I ended up getting back to my hotel and broke down crying. Originally thinking I was homesick, but I think it was just how powerful seeing his resting place was, just perfect and simple. I remember kneeling there and saying a prayer to thank God I had the opportunity to be there, and to thank his son Francis for being a great saint to be a model for others. I was the only Catholic on the trip, and I would love to go back there and stay.

Even St. John Bosco told St. Dominic Savio not to imitate the severe penances practiced by the Saints of the past.
Not everything that the Saints and their followers did in the past must be imitated exactly by Catholics in the 21st century.
The Church does allow for changes in times and circumstances, and adapts to new technology as well.
All these factors will have some effect on the daily lives of Catholics.

There is definitely a sense that he was heartbroken by the change, but it did not change because of one friar. By the time Francis died, there were more than 5000 friars in the order. The censure and finally the excommunication of the Fraticelli in 1296 probably ought to figure into the discussion. There was a broad continuum among the Franciscans at the time, from standard OFM to the loudest of the Spirituals bent on declaring the institutional church scandalous and hypocritical. It seems to me the Fraticelli were singled out due to the threat they posed to the *political* power of the church. The greater effect, whether intended or not, was to force "middle of the road" Franciscans to adopt more acceptable (comfortable) lifestyles. The voice of the poor was removed forever, and the legacy of St. Francis became a hollow symbol. Suppression of alternative voices continues to this day. Study the actions of my friend, Fr. Jerry Zawada, OFM, may he rest in peace. In what way did any of his activities truly offend the core principles of Christianity? In what way did anything he did violate the expectations of our Holy Father Francis? How did his actions significantly go beyond those of fellow activists, such as Fr. Daniel Berrigan? I find in Jerry's life no offensive acts, and yet he was persecuted by his own province and eventually forbidden to publicly celebrate the Mass. Tow the line, watch your step...donning the brown habit means adhering to the narrow path set out by the institutional church, in many cases suppressing the possibilities of Pure and Perfect Joy. PM

Chances are you are living far better, and don't have to take the bus to work just to earn minimum wage, where you get yelled at by your boss. What matters are systemic inequities which allow poor conditions to continue, not how you feel about "poverty." Grow up.

Perhaps it is you that need to grow up. I am not Catholic, but I can tell you he addressed the issue without the sin you accuse him of. He simply answered a question that has been hanging out there.
You, on the other hand, attacked without knowledge of the bigger picture. You have not watched other videos from Breaking the Habit. If you have you have cherry picked the concepts so that you have given yourself enough to complain about.
Take a look at yourself before you abuse others, you will find plenty to fix in yourself so that you don't have to attack others.

Ive read a book how st. Francis in a vision of Fra. MATEO DA BASCIO, repeatedly saying, follow the rules through the letters and not its interpretation, and fra mateo saw a vision many franciscans in next life had lost their souls drowned to damnation because of their infidelity to the rule, even a franciscan who just owned a breviary could hardly cross the river that drowned the poor souls of franciscans died with pocessions. A FRANCISCAN should die with a handkerchief alone in his pocket, a single coin inside his pocket could vanish his soul. That was a vision of the Poor fra mateo da bascio. To the letter, never enterpret it.

Brace yourself for a hard hitting truth.
"A Church that married to an age is widowed in the next"
A modern Church will be a widow come the end of its age. A traditional Church is a widow in a modern age.
Simply ask yourself, 'how does one identify a window?"
All her children grow up and left and she struggles to stay relevant in the community where she built her life.
Now which one are we in if we lose sight of the Holy spirit? Does it even matter?

I have to say this is your least compelling video. Does the evolution of the Franciscans mirror the Church’s general slide to the mediocre middle. The slickness of your message, the polemics of your argument, even the elevator background music, are beyond the simplicity of Francis and of Jesus and his followers as well. Heck, you might as well be a Dominican. Changes happen, when they retain that central kernel of meaning, I can accept them, but don’t tolerate a change that makes you generic, just another identical piece in the great blandness

Friends, there is NO "other christ", but only antichrists!
“Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. Behold, I have told you in advance." Matthew 24:23-25. Join the Orthodox Church, where we do not exalt men to the place of God!
Would any of the Saints of old have considered being called Christ anything other than blasphemy? St. Peter did not consider himself worthy to be crucified in the way Jesus was. St. John the Baptist, when the people said "are you the Christ?" said "No" and that he was not even worthy to untie the Christ's shoes. He did not say "I am another Christ", and Christ Himself said that there is no man born of woman, who is greater than St. John the Baptist!

Hello there! There is still a Franciscan community, founded in Italy, called Frati Minori Rinnovati They have a few communities spread around the world, such as in Africa and Colombia. Some of them still walk barefoot and, all of them do not receive money. You can take food to them, and additionally, all food is shared with the poor, sometimes not even too much left for them. Some of his founders, who are still alive, met Padre Pio when they joined their vocation. They depend on people generosity when it comes to medical assistance or other necessities. They are called "rinnovati" which means renewed, bringing back alive the origins of the Franciscan community.

I didnt get the logic here. In the beginning you clearly said st francis didnt even like the way his contemporaries acted, so why do you use the 'tradition vs modernity' argument? Also, as you already know how strict his standards were, why not just change the orders name rather than claim to still be franciscans? Honest questions and no offense meant.

It's wise to not get stuck on the externals. It is the Franciscan charism which continues to guide the First, Second, and Third Orders. The Franciscan spirit is one of simplicity, humility, peacefulness, and joy. It emphasizes poverty (of spirit) and service to the poor.

The Dominicans, who started around the same time as the Franciscans, were much the same way. St. Dominic wanted the Dominicans to travel and preach the gospel and live much as the apostles, surviving off the generosity of others. But it was quickly realized that wasn’t going to work for many reasons. It’s much like you said the Dominicans and the Franciscans are not their founders. Many of their followers could only hope to try and live up to a fraction of their founders.
I think many of these changes have helped both to thrive grow and bring their ministries to many more places than they might have otherwise.

It's logical to adapt to the times as long as the purpose of the order remains strong spiritually. Too much materialism isn't good for the Christian life (whether religious order or secular). We have a lot more distractions nowadays than St. Francis had which I think makes it easier now to detach from God's First and Second Commands.
