I feel like “a monk, a friar and a Jedi walk into a bar” is a missed opportunity for a good joke
Or if not a good joke, at least a forced one.

@@benn5471 *slow clap*
@@benn5471 bruh 🤣🤣🤣
Is it a brewery or a cantina? What kind of bar do friars hang around?
The fact that some people asked this man if he was a Jedi so much that he had to make a video is hilarious
Could've been resolved with a big ol' canister of Troll-B-Gone
Franciscans are really happy people. They have the 3 vows of obedience, celibacy ( chastity), and joyful poverty . Take note: joyful poverty !
😂 🙏 great
The fact that he went in-depth about who the Jedi were was even more hilarious.
@@TheTrueNicklose 😂😂
I love how you carried on with the Jedi all the way through.
It’s hilarious honestly
IKR?
FTW!
Dedication to the explanation of the Jedi is hilarious
It wasn't just added for the sake of a catchy headline but he actually provided thorough information. Very well handled.
Makes me wonder if he is a nerd at heart or if he did the research just for this episode. Probably a nerd at heart or the very least contemplated whether The Force and God could be connected lol
A few years ago while walking home from ministry, a man yelled to me from his pickup truck, "You're my only hope." I once heard a Costco employee telling another employee, "Check out Obi wan Kenobi on aisle 16." As Franciscans, who are called to be peacemakers as St. Francis of Assisi was in the 13th century, we are not allowed to a carry a light saber on our cord. Besides, the weight of a light saber makes the cord sag too much.
Err...isn't the rosary by the side a sword? 😉
😂
I always thought Padre Pio looked like OBi wan in episode 4. In Italy his image is everywhere.
If you happen upon someone who is choking, you can always say, "I Find your lack of faith disturbing."
@@rschiwal Excellent!!
You say, "May the Force be with you." I say, "And with your spirit."
Wasn't that line from the 1970's? I think the response was, "And also with you."
Both omitted from the newer editions? heehee
But every time I go to mass, the responses can be both. Hmm..
.
Is that the second part? Not many people know that there's a second part to "Live long and prosper". It's "Peace, and long life." which to me is kind of a cop out. That's the best the writers could do? It's redundant.
❤❤❤❤
My favorite college theology professor once said Jedi were basically Jesuit Taoists and I'm still not over how hilariously spot-on that is
Crossed with Knights-Templar style militant order and Sengoku Jedai-era Zen Buddist warrior monks
Yes. But definitely NOT today's Jesuits. Daoist-Jesuits pre-1773 suppression though? Spot on😇👌👍👍👍
@@jstantongood5474 Way to kill the joke, while trying to show off at the same time! 😂😂😂
Some Jesuits are very knowledgeable about Taoism. It's a knowledge based order.
Many years ago my youngest son wanted to be a monk for Halloween. As he trick-or-treated through the neighborhood, most adults thought he was a Jedi. He confused them when he said he was a monk. Eventually, he gave up and answered, "Yes, I'm Obi-wan".
I had the opposite situation. My mom helped my dress up as Obi-Wan and everyone thought I was monk. Apparently your son and I should have gone down each other's neighborhoods instead!
The funny thing is, in that answer, he lived the Monk Costume in a very real way.
The fact that he keeps a straight face through the whole video is gold.
I love how he goes into the same dept for the jedi and the other two. Others would simply overlook the jedi as fiction but he goes into great dept.
h.... h...

I love how he is so straight faced discusses jedi characteristics
Oh he definitely went head in on star wars lore
I'm an atheist, but I was drawn by this video because I didn't know the distinction. The jedi made it fun. Thanks padre!
He's not a priest so it would be hermano
@@tecumsehcristero He is a priest now, maybe not yet when this video was posted. He has a video about his ordination, you should look it up!
I too am an atheist, and was drawn to this as I was honestly confused by the friar/monk bit at first (Thank you for clearing that up!) and knew plenty about the Jedi (very nice work with the language assist on all three!).
The fact that I DM a tabletop RPG's (D&D, Pathfinder and many more) had me wondering about monks (I know they don't really engage in martial arts training, unless it's Eastern Religion monks-which is where that idea came from).
There actually have been militant Christian monks in the past, but the DnD Monk is definitely based on the Shaolin monks in China. Shaolin monks were militant historically and still practice martial arts, but most Buddhist monks don't practice martial arts like them. So it's sort of a square is a rectangle, rectangle isn't always a square situation.
@@douglasbaker4562 the part that got me was "eastern religions" ...Christianity too is an eastern religion remember.
So, monks are introverts and friars are extroverts!
That's what I concluded as well :)
monks take vow of enclosure while friars we don't take, we are mendicancy
monks observing silence much, it is they are spirituality and we too we do the same but not much
Yap correct and jedi are extreme
And Jedi can be both but with lazer swords
I think that maybe the Jedi, to some degree, can be likened to the Knights Templar.
Yes, that might be a better connection than to modern friars or monks.
I wouldn't be surprised if Spielberg was at least partially inspired by the Templars.

They were actually inspired a lot by the samurai as well.

Sitting outside on a bright summer's afternoon in monastic habit, I happened to be playing clarinet - at some point a family walks by and one kid points at me and cries out "Mom Look! its Obi wan Kenobi with a clarinet!" May the force be with you, indeed
Somewhat ironically, the "Monk" look of Jedi is just a happy coincidence of the first film being filmed in Tunisian desert. Lucas liked the local djellabah-like hooded dress they use there, so they dressed Owi Wan the same way.
He got so irritated of Jedi questions that’s he actually went to define everything about them 😂😭
I love that you said the difference between monks and friars is by location (bilocation). Haha, I'm a monk. We are active, but we do live in one monastery together. We have a university, prep school, and a few parishes (and tons of stuff to do around the house!) Great work!
Holy crap, you actually referenced 36,000+ years BBY in Star Wars lore and philosophy! Didn't see that coming and you now have my full Protestant geek respect! Dear fellow viewers, may we please get some F's in the chat for this legend???
"I never get tired of talking about Jesus." Awesome.
Many years ago, when I was a student at St. Bonaventure University, an older friar explained the three knots on his belt. He said "They stand for: no money, no honey, and I have a boss."
The Jedi robes are based on Japanese/Zen robes of jubon (undershirt), kimono, and koromo. Every time I put mine on and look at myself in the mirror, I go, "The power to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force". Very cool video.
Considering my knowledge of the philosophy of the Church and the philosophy and ideals of the Jedi order in Star Wars cannon I think there are plenty of comparisons. The works of my boi St Thomas Aquinas and his human and theological virtues are very similar to the Jedi code and ideals. Pretty cool Imo 😂
I found it hilarious that you took your time to seriously described what a Jedi is and does. Well done father, this video is instructive and entertaining.
Definitely most hilarious and most informative. Father, you could have been a great Jedi.
"Who doesn't know di-bendu?"
“Jedi aren’t real.”
I find your lack of faith disturbing.
I'd always thought that friars and monks were the same thing, so this was quite helpful and informative! Also I think people just really wish that Jedi were real so that's why they keep doing it.
Wishing Jedi were real is one thing but I rather suspect the majority of people learn about Jedi through the movies long before they see a friar or a monk.
Very creative and informative Bro. Thank you. May the Lord be with you, put his blessings on you and shine his countenance on you. That may not be exactly correct but you know what I mean.
Wait! Wait! I got one! ''So, a friar, a monk and a Jedi walk into a cantina...'' (I didn't even try to resist that one!) What! No Vulcans?
As an aging Catholic, I have just now found this series...in no particular order. I have found it very enlightening, despite having learned a lot of this previously. This has been terrific & reaffirmed my faith in 'catholic,' not just 'Catholic.' Thanks so much.

This helped me clear up a mistake I made the other day actually. I assumed someone was a Jedi on the street just because they had a long robe out on the street and a lightsabre, but he informed me that he was just a friar actually. Interesting!
This is absolutely brilliant! I'm loving friar humour!

whoa, it's true. All of it. The Jedi, the force. It's all real. So..
I have very recently come across these videos and love them. I am a Protestant and not interested and converting to Catholicism. However, I love this friendly and relatively open minded way of allowing all of us to learn more about Catholicism and your views on both secular and non-secular matters. Very enjoyable and educational. Thank you.

Learning about Friars for knowledge of the Leicester grey Friars for work... thanks for the info :) good video and presenting
I love this! So very informative AND entertaining!
I guess the real jedis were the Templars..
Here's an idea for a video.
Why aren't there militarized orders of monks anymore like the Knights Templar, Knights Hospitaller, Knights of Saint John of Malta, Teutonic Knights? If the Catholic church had modern orders of knights doing good in the world through military means I think a lot of suffering could be stopped. Imagine if the Church sent knights to fight ISIS years ago. They could have protected and evacuated the Christians in Iraq who ISIS was hunting down.
Of course I'm talking knights wearing body armor and carrying guns not suits of armor and carrying swords.
Maybe it's just the Franciscan in me speaking but I just think that what the world needs is not more guns, it's someone to put the pieces back together and prevent more violence. Nations are more than capable of defending themselves, but often they are not capable of making sense of the world, how to end violence, and how to overcome pain. That's where our "battle" lies.
That's all well and good but ideals are peaceful and history is violent. There is evil in the world and it must be fought. When the devil is defeated on one front he manipulates men elsewhere in the world to do his work and so must be fought there too. Until Christ returns and rules on the earth there will always be war on the earth.
Assasins Creed is famous and he is a Brother from the Order of the Minims.
Well honestly it's because those orders are no longer needed to defend Christendom like they were in the past. It would be a massive waste of resources for the Vatican to put whats required for the training and maintaining of an army. Modern wars are much different then they were in the past. Air superiority and technology are essential and the Vatican just doesn't have the funds for that. Also Christ is the Prince of Peace, God doesn't desire conflict or war between humans unless it's absolutely necessary. I say this as a Catholic who's joining the military and shipping for bootcamp in a few months.
Also side note the Vatican never really officially had Knights trained and funded by the church itself. Rather most of those orders you mentioned originated as secular forces under feudal lords. Not saying those men weren't devout and part of the church, but that they weren't part of the church in the same way that say Priest are.
Just got your book for my birthday. Can’t wait to read it!!
Awesome! Hope you enjoy!
Thank you for a very informative video! As a Devout Catholic I still have so very much to learn! Many blessings!

Interesting that you chose the Cistercian/Trappist branch of the Benedictine tree....and then there are the Eastern varieties...
I didn't really choose any of them. What I speak about in this video is generic information regarding the overall branches. There are many types of friars as well.
Thank you for explaining.
God bless you too
Love it! Nice treatment of a fairly confusing topic. My understanding has always been that friars, monks, and hermits are all very different, yet are all types of "monks" falling under the western "monastic" tradition. "Monk" being used colloquially, even accademically, as an umbrella term. I love it when people call me a Jedi (when I'm in the habit) as it has often been a fun segway into teaching about the Gospel life of a mendicant Friar. I think there is even a fun subtle nod to St. Francis' flirtation with knighthood and chivalry....
Thank you for your work, Brother. Merry Christmas and Blessed New Year+
The Jedi are like the Templars-both monks and knights.
This is exactly what I hoped this video would be. Amazing lol. For weapons also, Rosary vs lightsaber.

thank you for your posts, br. casey .always tackling interesting topics in a very entertaining way. just as a bynote - you mentioned, rightly, that carmelites and dominicans are also friars but neglected to mention that their habits, unlike that of your (or the augustinian) order, consist of a tunic, leather belt, scapular and, at certain liturgical or ceremonial functions, a full length cloak. conclusion would, i guess, be that, as the proverb says, one ought not judge a book by its covers.
And on the last episode for the season, I finally subscribed.
