    As a teacher-to-be I can really say, recess is a must, we get taught to not punish children by taking away their recess. They need it, I need it. Loved this video! Rules we all can use

    Not too long ago I stumbled across one of your videos. Now I chose a Parish and I'm doing confession and get to do rcia! 12 or so years since I left catholicism.
    I messaged on Twitter about it but you didn't see. Thank you for letting God work through you

      Human beings have always wanted and tried to save themselves from their own sins and earn their own eternal salvation. It is part of our sinful nature to do so. But there is no amount of human good works that could ever satisfy the demands of perfect holiness before YHWH because we “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). But Jesus, The Christ, was SINLESS and He satisfied all the demands of perfect righteousness. So He shed His own blood and died for our sins in order to redeem us. Then He rose from the dead and victoriously offered that glorious gift of eternal life to anyone and everyone who believes in Him and His promise to give us this gift. Hallelujah, What a Savior!! AND NOW we are FREE in Christ - at LIBERTY to LOVE OTHERS!
      Shalom

    Rule #9: going out of the house look at the sky. Coming back to the house, look at the sky. It gives me a feeling of freedom and absolutely beautiful moments: incredible sunrise, strange cloud formation, colorful sunset, rainbow, threatening clouds, raindrops coming at my face, lightning and thunder...you name it. Somebody asked me once, when I was sitting outside, just looking at the sunset, what I was doing. I told him that I was looking at a gift for me. He did not get it, so I explained that since I was the only person admiring it right now, I know that the Almighty created it just for me and it is His gift for me. I do appreciate and thank Him for those gifts that a lot of people miss in their big hurry.

    You are so right about not taking away recess! I worked with a brilliant kindergarten teacher who started school with a half hour of recess. When the kids finally sat down, they were no longer "full of ants" but, instead, they were ready to work. Those kids were so eager to work and they accomplished so much that the kindergarten teacher was named "teacher of the year" for a large California county. The teacher understood kids and it showed!

    "Always return the shopping cart" feels closely related to the lesson I took away from my dad, over and over-"Leave a place better than you found it." Usually said about putting his tools away in the garage, but true when leaving a job, a building, anything!
    Definitely some good thoughts through here for sure!

    So true that when facing something evil, moderation is the wrong answer. It made me think of a time I was in an abusive relationship and sometimes got stuck on thinking "shouldn't I try to see things his way and compromise?" But when someone is abusing you, there is no middle ground.

    Father Casey, about the shopping carts. Here’s another perspective. I don’t take them back, because I use them for walkers. I have a respiratory condition which is aggravated by walking. I also have severe arthritis in one hip which makes walking painful and difficult. I park in the handicap spots (with a hanger on my mirror). I rejoice whenever I see a cart left near the handicap spots, that I can use as a walker to lean on going into the store, as well as doing my shopping, and to get me back out to my car. I have even told the boys and girls who collect the carts to please leave one or two near the handicap spots for those of us who use them as aids. I’m not the only one. No, I don’t use the electric carts, preferring to leave those for the ones worse off than me. But you should know that it’s not always selfishness or laziness that doesn’t return the carts.

Your videos need to be redone with voice overs in major languages including major Indian languages like Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Malyalam, etc because your teachings are universal and clarify misgivings about an universal faith.

    One extra one from me... Strive to understand why others may disagree with you. You don't have to ever agree with them, however you should try to understand why they feel the way they do. The extra insight could allow you to change your action for the better, and perhaps sofen the harm you may have to do on someone else.

    • @johnm5928
      @johnm5928 2 роки тому +2

      Yeah totally agree. Not only does it give you an opportunity to discover if you're wrong, but it also stops you from viewing their disagreement as a personal attack on you and allows you to understand the other person's misunderstand so that you can potentially correct them.
      Ironically, I have disagreed with Fr. Casey on a number of things and he and I both could benefit from this advice.

    I am a clinical audiologist and also teach both undergraduate and graduate students about my profession. One lecture was pretty rowdy--students were upset about something and weren't paying much attention to lecture. I reminded them that we were given two ears and only one mouth for a reason...that listening was far more important than speaking. Needless to say, it got quiet in my classroom, and I listened to what my students needed.
    Thank you for your insights on this and every video.

    Good rules Father Casey, thank you. Returning the shopping cart - Yes! In this small gesture of kindness, we set an example, help hardworking, often minimum waged employees as well as helping to restock carts for other shoppers. One small act helps so many. Another kind act, if you are heading to the store and see someone has just finished unloading their shopping cart, offer to take their cart back for them. You’re going there anyway and your kind gesture to them may lead them to do something kind for another.

  • @kstepko

    “Always return the shopping cart” is a bit of a pet peeve of mine - and not in the way that it usually is for people.
    At the start of the pandemic, I injured my right leg and was hospitalized twice. During one hospital stay, prior to being eligible for vaccination, I contracted COVID, after which I suffered ongoing side effects for nine months. I continue to try to rehabilitate from both things.
    Often these past two years, I have taken a cart while shopping, primarily for support and stability. I have wheeled it to my car and left it there, because I was exhausted, in pain, and unsure whether I would be able to return to my car without holding on to it. I feel terrible, but hope that people will be understanding, rather than assume that I am lazy or inconsiderate, and perhaps return it on my behalf. Sometimes, an abandoned cart gets abandoned for a good reason.
    Secondly - my autistic brother used to work at a department store. One of his jobs throughout each shift was to go out to the parking lot and collect the carts. I asked him if he found it inconsiderate when people did not return their carts or if he liked the opportunity to go outside in the fresh air for longer while collecting them from all corners of the parking lot. He told me that it did not matter either way to him. However, it was obvious that he derived a great sense of purpose from this task, because he was necessary to both the store and its customers. Although he no longer works there, I always wonder about the person who must collect those carts when I go shopping, whether or not I return mine.

    While I fully understand that you need to plan ahead, God taught me a valuable lesson in my late 20s. I had my life planned out…not in tiny details but the general direction. Then it all fell apart. For a while, I allowed myself to sit at the bottom of the pit and feel sorry for myself. Then I got angry with God and told him he could throw me as hard as he liked but I would bounce back! It actually took until about 4 years ago for me to finally make peace with my life’s journey. The greatest lesson I learned back then was not to make life plans at all but to take one day at a time and allow him to make all the decisions. It’s been an incredible journey. He has led me along an amazing path and surprised me at every turn. I think there’s a place for both paths…each of us has a unique journey in this life…I wouldn’t change mine for anything. You’re still young and I hope when you get to my age, you can say the same!

      I think he may have avoided topics which the non-religious would react negatively to. That unfortunately includes prayer. But perhaps following the 8 rules will eventually lead the non-religious to prayer.

      @table2790 2 роки тому

      I think he sort of meant that by the 8th rule, of 30 minutes of silence-> for religious people that would likely be spent in prayer, and for non-religious, it would not.

    Thank you Fr Casey, this is excellent. Returning the shopping cart (or trolley as we'd say in England) is a principal I have tried to live by and encourage others to follow all my adult life, and I believe it is a great response to the sense of entitlement we unfortunately see from many in the world. There was some good challenge in these for me too, especially living in the here and now rather than being too focused on the future.

    Good rules, especially the last one (which is very difficult and very important).
    To me, the most important rule is: Love people, no matter how bothersome they are. At least try to. Pray for them even if you would very much prefer to slap them in the face. - I do not want to say by this that I am especially good at this rule (I'm not). But it's worth trying again and again.

    Such a great video. One rule I have on my own is: "Know that people are not really evil". Evil is a sickness, it's a sickness most catch from others when they're in close proximity. No one sane wakes up one day and says "Hey, I'm gonna be a terrible human being today". They do evil because they think there's no other way, they do it because they can't understand the consequences of their actions, they do it because it seemed like it was what everyone was doing and the worse is sometimes they do it to try and protect themselves. That doesn't justify evil of course but as humans if we truly want the best for greater good, we should not shun the evil without understanding them, we should see it as a sickness and try to cure it as best as we can without catching it ourselves, only then can we actually get rid of this pandemic of evil.

    Great video post, Father Casey ... I agree with all of your rules. As for myself, I have found that when I am with a group of other people, be it in a formal meeting or an informal gathering, I learn more when I pay attention to the person who is asking the most questions (not in a confrontational way, but in a genuine attempt to understand more clearly); conversely, I have found that I pay less attention to the person who (through their own statements and general attitude) apparently consider themselves to be the smartest person in the room.

    I agree with you about returning the grocery cart. I faithfully did so until about 5 years ago. Now sometimes after I have unloaded the dead bodies from the cart to the car I am exhausted. Years ago there were checkers, baggers and loaders in the grocery stores. Now we are checking, bagging and loading ourselves. At any rate rheumatoid arthritis knocks me out some days even w monthly infusions. So yes sometimes I am guilty as charged. I used to tell my clients, take care of the little stuff and the big stuff will take care of itself. Good video.

      @@randyogburn2498 That's good to hear. Unfortunately, I am trapped in the Socialist Sanctuary State of Nutlandia aka California---in particular Southern California. It's no mystery people are moving to the South from here. If I knew 50+ years ago what I know now I would have never come near the place. Thanks for the info.

      @@maryemilysmiley6146 oh, please feel free to go ahead and leave. I encourage people to get out. Only those of us who like California should stay! We’re all cheering folks leaving. Lol. Please move to the south ( I lived there for a bit) with its racism and guns if it suits your personality better!

    Love those rules. Particularly the one about putting the shopping cart back. I do that. Just because that kind of thing will make someone else’s life just a bit easier. I will strive to live up to all of these rules Fr. Casey. Though admittedly taking leisure time has never been a problem for me. I do crafts which is incredibly therapeutic.

    Great worldly wisdom. God's Word addresses all of these things. Have you ever considered using His Wisdom instead of your own. I am now 68 years old. Been studying His Word for about 50 years. Ever since I got saved. It's the only thing that works.

    I always return my grocery cart but on rural roads I don't use my blinker if there's no cars. 30 mins of silence seems impossible. I'll give it a try.
