I think my favorite psychopath in this game is Cliff. He’s not just a guy who broke when the zombies came about, he was a veteran granddad who lost his family and grandchild. He only snapped out of his PTSD just as he bleeds out, and even Frank actually seems sorry for him.
Also worth noting, Cliff is also the only one that snapped out of his insanity. The others are either too far gone like Adam or just borderline don't care like the butcher guy
One thing I noticed is that some people are disappointed about the amount of zombies on screen when they first play this game but the map slowly gets more populated with zombies over time. Paradise Plaza in the first day of the game is almost empty but by the end its really difficult to get survivors in.
I absolutely love that aspect of the design/difficulty--the physicality and tangibility of the time progression. From the first night revealing Queens; the appearance of Raincoat Cultists; steady increase of zombie density.. it's such an underappreciated element of DR1 brilliance.
I never noticed that. I guess since you open the mall up through the game, zombies pour in more. Also psychos and survivors seem to also open up the mall more.
God don't remind me lol, I just finished a Saint run this weekend while I was at home recovering from being rear ended at 70mph when I was stopped and by Day 3 Paradise Plaza is geniunely the hardest area to navigate survivors through. I think every other area has various routes you can take to get around but aside from the single upstairs area that only goes past like half the plaza it's just one giant open hoard of zombies you have to cut through and if a survivor gets swarmed you may as well reset cause if the zombies don't kill them, you will trying to free them.
I love it but sometimes I just wish it doesn't have that timer countdown. Because even though some might say you have plenty of time to do whatever before it runs out, seeing that clock constantly ticking down mentally hasten you to finish whatever you wanna do. It turns "I can take my time and enjoy this" to "I need to finish this quickly and efficiently".
@theotv5522 true but a player could do one genuine story run with a small mix of survivors and psychos and then focus the next playthrough with leveling up Frank and only doing survivors and psychos. I've only beaten Dead Rising 1 and that was like 2 days ago recent but I dont think the game restarts if you miss a case like Dead Rising 2. If you miss a case I think you can just continue the game without the main story.
Capcom struck gold with their take on western society dealing with tragedy. How the rise of shopping malls (more specifically the Mall of America which I think this is based on) we’re shopping and coping mechanisms for many consuming Americans, which is what Carlito points out as well before his death.
I would like to add that for a Japanese game from the 2000s, Dead Rising has very insightful commentary about the horrors which capitalism-imperialism subjects it's victims, the goals it has and the violent reaction which emerges from the abuses committed. The game is basically telling how Amerikan military and financial intervention against Third World Countries creates terrorist threats for that nation. The whole game is imbued with 9/11 angst and the role the US had in creating it's own catastrophe. This process is shown in the game's narrative by it telling how Barnaby's cow research in Pachamama lead to it's intervention and genocide, and consequently the Willamette zombie incident.

Dead Rising 1 is the best game I would never recommend someone play. It's amazing soundtrack, crazy-insaneo characters, nuanced story and Japanese arcade beat-em-up charm are couple with sadistic difficulty and obtuse AI which bring down the whole experience. I was reminded of STALKER the whole time I played it; the bugs and the obtuse gameplay make the gameplay worse objectively but elevate it to masterpiece by virtue of it all being so memorable and off beat. 10/10: it made appreciate the timer mechanic in games.
Fun Fact, I personally know Scotty Austin from Supernova Syndicate. Their song Heaven Creepin' In was featured in Dead Rising. Supposedly, coming from Scotty, himself, it was also featured in a Final Fantasy game but I could never find it in any music credits. Anyway, just thought it was cool...

YES! New Joshi video! Glad to see you cover Dead Rising. The editing was on point with some fun visual gags. Great work man, your editing has only gotten better with each video. Though it is quite interesting that this game unlike the sequels is the only one where you can freely choose to either: engage with the campaign or play freely in a sandbox. They never figured out why it worked and have continued to hire people who didn't understand why it did and won't understand how they pulled it off.
I loved dead rising 1-2 and even 3. The only thing I didn’t like in the entire thing was the time restraint, it always got my anxiety up trying to get all survivors while not trying to miss a main mission by dawdling around. But then again, my own fault for not checking the time or having better weapons
I remember playing against the humvee guys when I was a kid and pressing buttons out of rage when they ram me over. Somehow I timed it perfectly that I was able to rip their .50 off the truck as they ran me over lol
I always enjoyed how the zombies were more of a threat in the first one. You either destroy the head or collateral them. Body shots were largely useless. On top of that, you have to stand completely still upon shooting. Adds this essence of tension. As for the sequel, every gun kills a zombie in a single shot, irrelevant to where you shoot them. It leaned a bit too much into the goofy murder time funtime factor. There was no tension outside of bosses. Imo, DR2:OTR is prolly as good as a sequel we will get to DR1. Which isn't saying heavily much.
As someone whos played enlisted for free, one must note, its a pay to win game and I lost a few months playing it, the DLC's cost 50 or 60 dollars each, which was enough to buy a whole different game that i switched from playing enlisted.
None of the sequels to this game matched the original, I think it is still peak zombie media. Also now it's a time capsule to the 2000s when malls still existed
i remember getting the true ending for this game and my parents telling me we had to go somewhere and to turn it off but the last boss on top of the tank was taking forever and i told them to wait. got my xbox taken away but i remember feeling so accomplished that i didnt care. xd
It was only a few months ago when I revisited this gem of a game. I had an Xbox 360 copy and a save with the laser sword on said 360 (yes I did spend 10 hours of my life mostly watching Frank huddled over a pile of food that he had to eat from periodically), but it didn’t work on the XBONE because… Microsoft, I guess. Anyway, I was so mad because I wanted a way to get a good gameplay recording of me having the laser sword and my only means was with the XBONE. I was so mad in fact, that I bought a month of game pass for $1 so I could play the XBONE Dead Rising, beat the game while saving all survivors and getting the zombie genocider achievement in one go, then proceeded to watch Frank eat for 10 hours again just so I could get a single clip of me having the laser sword in my hand to send to one friend… and let me tell you… it was all worth it.
I have so much fun is doing a NG run going for Saint (Ending B) or Overtime/True Ending. From LVL1 to LVL49/50 in a single run; it's awesome and very doable.
The reason the convicts get stuck is because they were coded and added before they actually added any trees, so they cant see the trees and get stuck on them.
I disagree Black Yoshi, DR1 could very much use a remake. A zero load screen open mall with no loading or transitioning's masked by a boring gameplay sequence, better survivor AI and mechanics, a pallet cleanser to remove the taste of Frank's big Package, I say it could use it

Joshi on MALL ZOMBIES LETS GO LETS FRAKING GO LEts frEAKIN GOOOOOOO
Nah, hard disagree, Dead Rising DOES need to be remade, or at least given a remaster because of the survivor AI alone.
black yoshi rising from the dead with another masterpiece
I disagree Black Yoshi, DR1 could very much use a remake. A zero load screen open mall with no loading or transitioning's masked by a boring gameplay sequence, better survivor AI and mechanics, a pallet cleanser to remove the taste of Frank's big Package, I say it could use it
Eyyy, I caught that Studio C clip!
I wish there was a Dead Rising 1 DLC where you get to explore the entire city of Willamette...
Haha holy shit. The helicopter event in Project Zomboid is Frank West! Why didn't I ever think that 😂
Mall Music 3 is a banger
