Mafia 2 (or mafia ii or whatever) is a great gaming experience. Probably one of the best open world experiences since the gta 4 review. Well and the la noire review. Then again every black joshi review I make is my favourite, right before I declare I want nothing to do with it ever again lol.
I hope this makes it into a video

Fun fact: if you enable the speed limiter while you’re over the legal limit, the game will cause your car to rapidly lose speed and slow down, this usually only takes a second and is incredibly useful for controlling high speed cars while driving around corners or in some more cramped areas of the city
The speed limiter being on will also adjust how cars shift, allowing them to shift up earlier in the rev range instead of ringing out every gear to redline - much appreciated in the snow chapters.
cheater :P
Lemme send u a virtual dicksuck m8
the most op ebrake tech in gaming
This was the main trick I exploited constantly to always drive at max speed, toggling speed limiter is infinitely more effecting than braking at high speeds, especially if there's snow, allowing you to just go zooming without crashing corners or traffic!
my favorite part of this game was when Vito said that's how mafia works and then committed an act of terror
I love committing act of terror
What about the whole part where he said "it's mafia time" and mafiad all over the place?
Well technically it wasn’t an act of terror because it wasn’t politically motivated, you just sorta accidentally blew up a building because you didn’t like a guy
how very interesting
The parallels between Mafia 2 and LA Noire are pretty similar. They both had a beautiful worldspace that was more set dressing for the linear narrative, rather than a character in of itself.
LA Noire told a story far more mature, gritty and believable than most modern media productions dare to even attempt, Mafia II regurgitated the same old mob-clichés with nothing at stake without bringing *anything* new to the table.
But yes, both in terms of gameplay were utterly janky, equally shit driving and shooting physics in completely non-utilised gameworlds.
@@JohnDaubSuperfan369 I enjoy LA Noire more, but I respectfully disagree. LA Noire takes a ton of inspiration from past noire films and novels, with The Naked City DLC being pulled directly from a 1948 film of the same name. It's a well-executed (albeit uneven) story - don't get me wrong, but I'd hardly consider it "original."
Without getting into too much spoilers, I also think Mafia 2 deserves a little more credit for its writing. Yes, there's plenty of wise guys and stereotypical setups and payoffs, but I think how Vito gets there is kind of unique in terms of video game storytelling. The time jumps, stint in prison, as well as how it ends is very reminiscent of a film, but pretty unusual for a narrative focused game for that time.
I respect your opinion, though. It can get frustrating when characters default to tropes we've seen hundreds of times.
@@BlueRanger57Mafia II's story is a significant down grade from Mafia I.
You see Mafia II really didn't have any sort of real vibe, & it just comes off as a puke of various different Mob & crime movies without any consistency.
Meanwhile Mafia I has the great comic booky / old movie glorious past vibe.
That and gta4 where everything that makes it a game exists solely as a excuse for the story to progress to something

There's a mission in Mafia 2 where you and your guys drive to a strip joint. It's unique because it's a late game mission where there is ZERO combat or action, it's just you and the guys going out, getting hammered and eventually driving home. It's just not something you see in a normal 'game', they all follow a script it feels like

Mafia 2 and Mafia were probably some of the best story rich games that came out that just fell under the radar for a lot of folks. Very underrated games and definitely worth getting.
Have played allot of games. Mafia 1 death screams is still traumatising. It makes very little sense since it only is due to how memorable it is. And the looping music! Still the death sound is just something special. Compared to San andreas Carl's pain sounds the Mafia 1 is just so much more impactful. Very underrated this stupid Mafia games are. That is for sure. Still good stories at the core of them.
La Noire was big enough to get X doubt. For the Mafia games we got Joe's lines. But no one knows where they are from. :c 300 bananas.
Only for the franchise to be picked up by Western developers and be bastardized beyond recognition. Mafia 3 should've never seen the light of day. Pretty much same goes for the remake.
Mafia 1 didn't really fall under the radar, it did really well for itself. It came out 2002, when playing games on PC was for a select few. I got it in 2007, and even then there was still an incredibly active mod scene for the game. But its age is the only reason it wasn't a bigger game. That, plus how annoyingly hard it was.
@@carny15The story was good, and the time frame they picked was great, but the thing that ruined the game was the gameplay. It was hideously repetitive.
@@LSD_93You are right Mafia 1 is just an older game that not a lot of the younger players got to play, and ones that did always complained about it being difficult. It’s a great game but I don’t think the franchise gets the attention it deserves honestly.

“Sorry kid, it’s joever for him.”

Whilst I do think it’s a good game, mafia DE is excellent. It’s hard to go from such an amazing looking remaster to mafia 2 imo. Plus the story feels rushed don’t you think?
I love this game, the driving is so satisfying once you master it, the story is great, the setting, it's definitely one of my favorite games of all time.
Couldn’t agree more. Simulation driving physics in the snow is incredibly fun once you get a hang of how the cars handle.
It's reviews like this that remind me how underrated this channel is.
Thanks Black Joshi for all these great reviews, and especially the politically-incorrect streams!
Drunk Eddie: So, how'd you like the place, Vito?
Drunk Joe: Lot better than playing hide the salsiccia in the showers, eh?
One moment that was very memorable for me, but I suspect wasn't to many others, is escaping with joe after the failed jewelry heist. In my playthrough, for some reason barely any cars spawned for several blocks and I had to stealth around the open world to find a car to steal while the cops were looking for us. A genuinely thrilling and novel moment that happened by accident.
There is a gas station nearby where you start the escape and next to that gas station is a parking lot which was always packed with cars every time I played that mission.
@@MarkoVuckovic32 I guess I took the wrong turn or just didn't notice it. My mistake made it more fun in the end
I played mafia 2 as a very young kid probably right around when it came out and im 18 now, I replayed it probably 20 times atleast bc I adored it, im just now learning that you can disable the safe alarm in the museum mission lmao wtf
Damn. The cut content is crazy. I had no idea they were a thing. I actually enjoyed this game. I actually got when it came out because I loved the original Mafia. I still remember the commercial for this game.
The cut content is probably for the best. Mafia 2's simplicity is one of its strong suits.
@@TheBigBlackJoshi definitely agree. I loved every minute of my first play through. I’m actually happy I never played the DLC. Was it really that bad?
@@RickyHadou Yes. Joe's adventures has like a maximum of 20-30 minutes of great content in the story missions if we're being generous about the time, punctuated by a few hours of mandatory side missions that add nothing and are boring and sometimes a pain in the ass. Jimmy's Vendetta is just timed side missions and I never finished it.
I think this is also a prime a example of the difference in philosophy between the original 2k Czech and Hanger Games.. 2k Czech being an european developer, prioritize the immersed before anything so they made the simplistic but added so much little details that it still has a nice replayable value. meanwhile Hanger studio being typical americans, only wanted to go bigger and that ended up making it generic
@@v-trigger6137Lol hanger 13 is comprised of the former 2k czech devs
Honestly man, amazing story and way too many wanted posters aside, Joe's pickup lines will forever live rent free in my fucking head
"Is that a mirror in your pocket because I see myself inside your pants"
"Why dont we go back to my place and play house, you'll be the door and I'll slam you"
"Are you my appendix? I don't know what you do or how you work but I feel like I should take you out."
Just a quick headsup, that man didn't extaggerate, the DLCs really are THAT awful. Trust me, you'll have a more fun time getting kicked in the balls than playing Jimmy's shitty baldy adventures
Literally all of Joe's lines live rent free in my head. I love the fact that he literally only has 5-6 lines when he's in combat so he's constantly repeating himself when he's with you during shooting sections. "Ya shoot like my sista!" "They teach you that in the army?!"
Back me up Vito!@@OutlawedPoet

@RandomIdiot-tv8kk TAKE YER FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR!
Like Joe's dlc is any better. Even if it was that shitty time limit makes everything frustrating.
I really fell in love with Mafia II as well. The finely crafted story, the attention to detail, and historical accuracy with weapons, music, cars posters and all that.
The amount of details for things like the weapons you didn't even know existed back in Harry's shop, or the many different stores and resturants around the city.
It has the most satisfying robbery system where you can shoot the store clerk, steal the actual items on the shelf, empty the register and if you hide nearby for heat to die down and go back. The police will have put police tape over the door and locked it. So you can lockpick it to go back in.
I used to find it funny to rob food joints just so i could steal all their sodas and burgers. See all the sodas on the shelf disappear one by one, same with the burgers. So its not like they just put a grill full of burgers there that you endlessly pick from (except on the last one) but the food and items on the shelf actually disappear when you buy or steal it.
I never even knew there was larger plans for it, but it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that a game with this much ambition had more planned.
I still have hope that Mafia 4 will be Mafia 2 with all the things they promised and 10x better
I enjoyed this aspect as well. One time I robbed a shop but left the clerk alive, after which I went home and changed clothes. I then returned to the store and the police were interviewing the clerk and he saw me and said "there he is! He changed his clothes!"
After playing through the Mafia trilogy for the first time, I'll miss how in Mafia 2 (and Mafia 1 Remake) there were different levels to criminal offences when you drove. You could get a speeding ticket, or get pulled over for running through a red light. Not only that, but I think there's certain moments where NPCs could get the same treatment. It was a nice change of pace, instead of getting immediately gunned down for a fender bender.
EDIT: I meant Mafia 1 Remake, not Remaster
*"Remake"
I also love Mafia II’s wanted mechanics; how the player could be wanted separate from the car you were driving and Vice versa. I really hope Maria IV brings that mechanic back. It makes so much more sense for the car and player to be wanted separately as you could rob a store - cops get a description of the player thus you become wanted - but then you get into a car unseen. It makes no sense for them to know what you’re driving in that case. I’ve never seen another game do that and it was awesome.
Remake*
@@Ward413it was first implemented in Driver Parallel Lines, and, imho, it was better there, as both car and on foot wanted levels in Driver have 10 levels and it depends on player on foot wanted level how quick they will recognise the player in unwanted vehicle. Pretty cool detail.
I remember getting in a fight with a random pedestrian in the game, and a cop came over to arrest the pedestrian because he was kicking the shit out of me. The pedestrian tried to run away and got shot.
The checkpoints were brutal, especially the last mission on Hard
I played through the first dozen hours of the game when I was like 14. I remember really loving the mob story and Vito as a main character, but ultimately dropping the game like 60% through.
I replayed it twice to completion much later in life. Once, when I was 19 and again when I was 23. I even 100% the main game the 2nd time.
It captures that feeling of what made calling so fun and easy back in the early 2010s. The story is tight, the dialog is good, the cut scenes are good, the set pieces and level design are top tier, great Voice Acting, great direction all round...
Take these things individually, and It doesn't seem like much. But the game just delivered on all the small stuff. A concise story with good twists and a passable combat system.
They wanted a semi open world, but knew it would mean most of the game would bedriving, so they put most of the development effort into making the cars feel nice to drive and making the world fun to drive in.
The map isn't too big to where you get bored, but it's not too small to where it feels overly cramped.
3:14 sucks to see Johnny Sins falling on such tough times to become a criminal
7:20 he can do nick cage’s godly slap
Mafia II always felt like a good, even sometimes bordering on great game that could’ve been amazing if given just a bit more time & money.
Personally, I like the dlcs for this game. The beginning of Joe's Adventures is unique and pretty fun to play and the Life of Jimmy dlc is basically the truly open world version of the base game. You really feel like a hitman when playing the missions and money is somewhat important.
Although I do agree that time limits are a ridiculous mechanic on most missions

I love how you seemingly toe the line between shitpost and informative essay (I was laughing through the first seven minutes), while still given me a reason to play the game (I have already, so I know this review is accurate while also having some cool tidbits). It feels short but I don’t know what else you could add. Great job, I look forward to watching some of your other videos as you have gained a subscriber.

I'm incredibly glad you made a video on this one, it's always been one of my favorites
I guess we need Mafia 2 Remaster with all cut content put into the game with real open world activities
One of my favorite games of all time, I probably have a combined total of 500 hours on it from replays and just driving around, and as mentioned, that's a big thing, the driving is pretty much perfect. From simulating how a clutch works (giving a bit of gas and gradually having the clutch engage and the car move) to being able to do a proper burnout by dropping the "clutch" and holding the car back by using just the right amount of brake. Also the sounds are absolutely killer on a lot of the cars, especially the Walter Hot Rod. Czech 2K did such an amazing job at getting all the details and customization right.
Fun fact: In the mission before you pay off the debt, if you have enough money you can glitch the game into thinking you have already completed the next missions and pay off the debt without completing them.
How. Tell me, I need to know how to glitch logic into the game

I can say the only shortcoming this game has is how underutilized the open world is. It’s merely a backdrop with some shops sprinkled around. But the story, characters, gunplay, and driving all make up for it. It really is Good Fellas: the Video Game and it’s just as good as the movie!

This is my absolute favourite game tbh. The nostalgia this game pits you in is untouched. All the little details it has. Mafia 3 lost all of them.
"Go to the bathroom, NOW"
Mafia 3 sucked. Every mission is the same. Copy and paste. Sucks because I thought the setting was a pretty great idea.
Without the copy and paste repetitive mess. It still dose not make sense to call it Mafia 3. But like the main character and concept. But why Mafia? And so broken and repetitive BS. There is clear proof in the game that without the name AND more work it would be awesome. Vito's truck missions (you drive a truck and trailer across the map) had me amazed and in shock when out of no where was attack mid driving across the map.
The enemy in font of me looked like a ordinary civilian car and then out of no where hit the brake and crashed into me. Got quickly surrounded from behind when the light turned green in a intersection and the enemy in front of me blocked me. It has to have been random luck but that was just such a good attack on me trying to follow road rules and was jumped and boxed in. I was in such a shock of the game doing that. Unreal having the game do something so clever in the open world. It has to be completely random that it played out like that. But if that was the game? Wow.
It was also in the truck and trailer missions I pulled my semi truck into a friendly what did they call it? Base? Underboss base? Anyways having a tail on me blowing my tires etc sustaining damage. Pull the hole tractor and trailer into the yard of my underboss safehouse and having a true gunfight take place. Then jump back into the truck and GTFO before the cops shows up. Leaving my underboss to clean up the mess. Even now nothing mattered and it is all a video game with no real impacts or anything modeled into the gameplay. It just made it memorable to do something else then the horrible repetitive garbage. Like the story stuff was not bad but the game just sucked.
It did help to play Mafia 2 and 3 like it was Mafia 1. If you only can carry a pistol and have to pick up bigger weapons off the ground or carry it to and from a car? Having to "drop" it to not have people notice you carrying a gun? It makes it just a tiny bit more bearable together with not using any upgrades to the character. It was so much more fun playing without OP broken abilities like carrying a hole military grade gun store inventory in your pockets. And by having to carry stuff open etc making it allot more likely that you pick up random weapons and only carry a pistol with a very limited ammo capacity with you into combat. No upgrades for the win! And no hidden sniper rifles and 5 machine guns up your ass.
Only going in hot with a rifle in your hand. Feels right. Makes it actually make sense to do anything fun. If you want a rifle with you into a mission the people walking down the street is going to notice the black man get out of a car with both hands on a big ass gun. That is how it should be. In a game like Mafia 3/2/1. I mean the black part is funny and all but dam aint it nice change for ones not shooting them but being them. Right?
What if for next we check the japanese mafia during Japan's economic bubble ?
