Fun fact the US military itself wasn’t really thwarted directly by the zombies but rather the infection itself turning into an airborne strain that then went on to infect the rest of the world.
The player characters and eventual human NPC’s are the small portion of the population that are immune to the airborne strain but unfortunately aren’t fully immune to the infection, so will still turn if bitten.
More than likely the soldiers that were immune either fell back via orders or went AWOL trying to survive their fellow men turning.
THAT IS
TERRIFYING
IIRC, riots erupted outside the military checkpoints in Louisville that got to the point where the military used firearms. It's not elaborated if they were shooting the rioting civilians or those were warning shots but it did draw a large horde as a result.
The beginning of the airborne strain closely coincides with those events which can be coincidental, may be a sudden evolution of the virus through exposure to extreme circumstances...or can be connected with the nearby hospital with a large assortment of micro analysis equipment and a state of the art computer room with a gun locker for some reason.
Whether the initial horde broke through is unknown but either it did or the airborne strain got released and shortly after infected the checkpoint.
I like the mod "Susceptible" because not only does it give a whopping +11 trait points but it also ups the risk since you'll have to wear masks whenever near zombies.
so basically I Am Legend except way less scary zombies
Maybe that could be the backstory for the Military Veteran class. I’m sure Project Zomboid has RP servers, so that could be a thing!
4 Oily Fat Smokers Take on The Birthplace of Fried Chicken.

now the zombies can track their stench
15:02 The environmental story telling of Project Zomboid cannot be overstated. It is some of the best environmental story telling because it is subtle and you can easily miss it. One of the most impactful and memorable moments of this game is my friend and I driving back to our base after looting, it's the last run for the night because we're about to go to bed IRL, it's quiet. I jokingly go "Let's listen to some tunes!" and turn on the radio, it's a news/talkshow station and not a music one. The message is something along the lines of "Well folks this is it. This will be Knox Talk's last broadcast, I don't think we can survive much longer. If you're hearing this you're the last hope, survive as long as you can. Goodluck and goodbye........". It was somber and followed by silence, a very small but impactful detail that could have been missed if I hadn't made that joke.
yeah, most of your time spent watching the tv is leveling with life and living rather than analyzing the lore presented on the news
It's worth even reading the wiki and looking at the transcripts for the radio stations specifically. They are incredibly well written and so easily overlooked in game. I've spent hundreds of hours playing PZ and haven't heard most of them because early game when you're trying to get gear and your first temporary base the only thing you have time for is your mandatory 3x daily life and living punishment power hours
Old comment, but a few things:
As Goalie002 said, yeah the transcripts are a rollercoaster and well worth reading.
Not environmental, but an amazing trick the devs put into the game. One thing that really got me way back in the day was the main menu's entire presentation. If you aren't paying attention, you could miss it, but it's such a simple and in-your-face thing. The tutorial has you play a husband doting on his dying wife, so if you were to miss it at first, you might think that the menu background--a man crouched over a dead woman--is in reference to the tutorial.
...No, no it is not. When lightning flashes, it's a zombie eating the woman. It's such a perfect main menu background because it captures the theming of the game so well.
Linkara is the greatest Project Zomboid player and it was an honour to play with him.
it is the tea drinker
you drink tea?
The light bringer
Wait, your name was ACTUALLY teadrinker?
That's what I get for putting this on the background.
I would kill him instantaneously
You perfectly capture that every Zomboid playthrough is a story to be told
There’s usually thousands of zombies in the mall, which makes the low pop really weird. Maybe the indoor zombie population was lowered but I don’t know… one thing is for certain, the mall is the most infested area in the game and therefore usually the end goals of many series, don’t underestimate it…
So we looked back over the footage, turns out most of the mall's population got lured out by the noise we were making at the construction site (hence the absolute slaughter that took plate there)
Rosewood prison:
Alternately, it was picked as a location for spawning Survivor zombies, which has a habit of the building spawning no other zombies.
On default settings the zombie population ramps up over time, meaning there is relatively few zombies around during the first few days of a playthrough, while it maxes out at around 28 days I believe. In other words, the later you go to a place, the bigger the horde there will be.
@@xxyWolfthey probably started the trip when the power went out so its still weird
Black joshi kept saying the n-word and insisting he had a pass, we were all very uncomfortable

Zomboid really is a different game with friends. The constant danger feeling if you're more experienced because you know one of your friends has zero awareness skills. Wondering who the fuck took the truck you were busy repairing just a moment ago. Desperately pleading with "that friend" not to shoot their shotgun just yet, knowing he's mere seconds from ringing the dinner bell (again). Wondering where all the water went before seeing your spotless friend walk by. Repeatedly telling everyone the food you prepared is almost ready, then seeing them eating canned food and dumping the empty tin on the ground (and not replacing the tin opener in the crate even).
But also the good times when you're all on the same page finally, you're clearing out a high value building, guns blazing, mowing down hundreds of zombies, desperately trying to rescue the one who got messed up because he didn't realise he was standing with his back to an open window and somehow managing to survive. Finding your first katana and whoever gets it being so chuffed and happy. Chill fishing trips and riverside camp outs (where the fact one of your friends accidentally walked into the camp fire and turned to ash is just a mere detail in an otherwise excellent waste of time). Towing an overloaded car at 5mph because it broke down in the middle of nowhere and somehow not going completely insane because your friend is there with you. And the gasps of amazement when they notice your hard work in finally finishing the plumbing in the safehouse and everyone is so happy they can finally use the taps again.
Haha yeah, they trash the place, bring chaos to containers, eat only can food, doesn't matter how much times you explained, they keep grabbing unuseful items, they crash all cars but we still love to play with them and appreciate their company. Thanks for your great and very well written comment!
YES! This is one of my favorite games, thank you Joshi for finally covering this game, here are some things you can do to improve your chances of survival:
Use VHS tapes to rewatch programs on the television, you can watch the same programs to gain experience
Try to stay away from dead bodies for large amounts of times, you can lose health and get sick from being near them. (Im pretty sure zombies are ok, just stay away from corpses that have flies on them)
Dont use a generator inside, you will gain stress and die due to carbon monoxide poisoning
Shotguns and beta blockers are the go to weapon to level up aiming, once you get to level 4 you can use pistols reliably.
Bourbon is an amazing multitool, you can drink it to go to sleep, reduce unhappiness, lower panic, gain weight, desinfect wounds (lmao) and use them to craft molotovs which are amazing to clear out zombies.
NEVER pick sunday driver, it increases gas consumation and the slow ass car WILL kill you.
Don't worry about wounds getting an infection, it does nothing in the game for now. (The Knox Infection will still kill you so be careful about zombie wounds).
Conspicuous and Slowhealer are pretty much free points, Conspicuos only increases the chance of being spotted by 100% which sounds like a lot but it really doesnt do anything since the zombies always chack for neaby players 100 times a second, so it means nothing.
You can use fire to clear out hordes easily, just dont get burned and stay away from buildings and you can clear out a town within a week.
Dont put metal objects in microwaves, they will explode now.
Butter is amazing to gain weight.
(Not Necesary) Try to get any trait that increases nimble, the amount of time you have to wait for it to level up is asinine. Once you get to level 5 you can outspeed zombies in combat stance.
having about 10+ bodies being in the same area will cause flies to appear and corpse sickness will begin to set in when you stay around them regardless of whether you are inside or outside. To prevent this you can either leave the area or get rid of the bodies by moving them or by burning them. (Be careful when burning large amounts of bodies or killing zombies with fire as like with a microwave fire the flames will consume a town if you follow them. Just let them burn out around you as it prevents you from having to lose a lot of resources.)
ALWAYS pick sunday driver, gas doesnt matter and a fast ass car WILL kill you
@@Helleborre Most of a car's fuel consumption comes from being on so only being able to go 30mph at a max is very costly, especially as gas stations are no longer infinite (except when you choose it in sandbox) and the torque reduction WILL CAUSE YOU TO DIE in a small horde as your car is stuck and you should've been able to get out normally and YOU WILL FEEL THE SPEED REDUCTION because you have to drive in real-time.
It sounds like you've just held down w and only braked when you saw a corner and then slammed into the side of a Spiffo's at 60 mph because you weren't zoomed out, you can increase the view distance in settings and having a higher quality monitor (or setting the game's output to the display as a larger grid) also extends your view distance.
Always pick sunday driver if it's something like 10 years later where there are no cars or in a playthrough where you won't be driving or if you will be driving and you chose it for roleplay reasons.
@@coreyfinn5532 Alright, I think I get what you're saying, skill issue + trash PC + do you even burglar. XD im just meming, I almost never use cars as its not my playstyle. And when I do, sunday driver atleast makes sure im not wrapping my self around trees or driving into 200 zombies
@@Helleborre if you do drive into that many not even speed demon can save you so that's fair. I apologize, I don't really believe that your pc's trash or that you have a skill issue or that its your build. I mean that there is little precaution taken and I believe when you are terrified of every lampost on the street you will be a force to be reckoned with and survive for many months. Happy looting in modern day Kentucky.

I have to say, I love Black Yoshi. I was watching various reviews and I saw Linkara, The Great Linkara. He was surviving a zombie apocalypse and he talked about the famous potato farm, right? And he said: "they will be ripe when thye're ripe". And we like that, "they will be ripe when they're ripe". Great work ethic, so good. Fred Durst was there, the Great Fred Durst, right?
The difference is Joshi actually uploads
People often think of the mall being the big challenge. However even though the mall is one of the most populated, if not the most populated area, the difficulty of it is lowered by how large the area is in comparison. I forget the exact location, but there is a high rise office building that is at least 5 stories tall with each floor housing 200+ zombies. That building is the most difficult area to clear out by far because once you make any sound, zombies above you will either go down the stairs towards you or jump out of the windows and follow the sounds into the building effectively blocking off exits.
Got two buds I play with. I usually go for the grizzled vet who was going to retire the next week, one plays the sneak thief, and my third buddy plays the wild card. I say that because it's up in the air for when he finally decides to attack us and we have to put him down like a rabid dog. Then he'll act fine for a bit and then attack us again. At this point we treat him like the red headed step child at a Christmas party.
That sounds like the best way to play the game honestly
Man i wish my friends didn't think this game was boring we could have so much fun
Man I wish I had friends
I fall into this boat too, just want to play with some peeps regularly
My friend tried playing it, tried to fight 5 zombies at once with an axe I just gave him, got pulled down and eaten, then quit.
He had maybe half an hour of playtime before quitting, because apparently "IT DOESN'T FUCKING WORK!" despite me happily handling all the zombies gathered around his mulched carcass for afternoon lunch.
@@Kaiimei It is funny how people get used to playing games in which individual zombies are more a hassle than an actual threat, then when a game makes zombies actually threatening to fight they just get mad at it lmao
@@veto_5762 The thing is, in Zomboid, individual zombies really aren't a threat except in just one situation: when you don't know they are there.
Stairs are my nemesis in PZ, I go up them and never know if a zombie is waiting to grab me at the top.
Being frank, my method of death in PZ can be summed up with one Darkest Dungeon quote. "Overconfidence is a slow...and insidious killer."
I get too confident, try to take on more than I can handle, and end up dead for it, because in Project Zomboid, you are never truly safe. Even just one zombie can kill your run at any point, with just one single attack, a bite to end your existence!
"Which perfectly exemplifies why Project Zomboid is better with friends."
Me, watching this video at 12:20 AM because my only friend rage quit the game because he got torn apart before I could react fast enough and blamed me for dragging the zombies, deleted the world and basically ended the night being ruined together after we spend over an ingame month stockpiling food, drinks, guns and ammo and preparing almost everything, all gone: (Sighs.)
Sounds like a bad friend ngl

i love that in project zomboid, a person with schizophrenia, dyslexia, illiterate, retarded and smoker is the most capable person to survive the zombie apocalypse

I remember having character with ALL the negative traits and nearly all of the positive traits. I was able to get some decent clothes like a firemen suit, but I was trapped in a house full of zombies. So I thought if I was going down I'd take as much as I can. So I put all the metal in the microwave to try to blow up the place ((didn't work)) and I left the oven on with a bunch of flammable objects. When I finally started a fire I then went on a killing rampage with a fucking frying pan before finally burning alive
@logangoulet7522 eh I'm more of imaging honor and sacrifice playing
3:55 "I have critical injuries! ..*AAAAAAAAGH!*"

18:00 i like how the driver got perfect directions "go right" and "go south" but bro doesnt know where to go 😂
19:05 This has been patched so that zombies can break the sheet rope from below. If you don't have another one on you it can leave you stranded on the upper floor. Fingers crossed you don't break a leg :D
That’s only if the window is open
I'd totally watch more videos of you just narrating stuff like this. Its always interesting to hear people's tales of daring feats of courage and retardation in games that are conductive to emergent storytelling like project zomboid. Often times more than just hearing about the game itself.
Hold on, correction on the first minute. Project Zomboid is actually not that performant, as it has issues maintaining a stable framerate on medium-range computers, struggles to run on low-end computers, and while it's almost perfect vanilla on high-end, going into high-population areas like Louisville can still bring a top-end computer to its knees. Not to mention mods, mods can bring the gaming experience from 60 frames to 30-40 consistently.
But, and an important but, the upcoming build of the game has performance fixes that will allow the game to run smoothly at HRR levels. No more 30-60 frames, we're seeing 240 soon.
You're correct in your first paragraph. Your last sentence however, don't be naïve, we at best will only see slight improvement.
I used to do low pop only for optimization reasons. I have a new pc with a 4090 so I can have more zombies on screen as long as I’m hosting or host is near my area.
And so the group who cheated the apocalypse cheated it once again. Black Joshi’s heroics in the exclusion zone slowly made its way out to other survivors in small settlements and wanderers as an idol to keep pushing in the face of danger. Linktara continued to grow fresh crops handing out doses of food to those in need. Teadrinker slowly branched off from the main group but not swaying too far, acting as a guide for passerby’s alerting them of danger and directing them. Ogre remained a clumsy and short witted, but him surviving for as long as he did earned the respect of many.
Love this game. Devs put so much work into it and keep the community updated weekly. My favourite detail is the radio broadcasts that actually cause your character to panic. Works with the Dog Goblin 1 VHS as well
I absolutely adore Black Joshi’s humor and in someway I have memorized his thumbnail style! It’s so consistently consist and good!

0:18 but unlike the other members it's still actively being developed
Slower than the death of the universe, but it is.
Love your constant use of Fallout & Fallout 2 music, especially how you used the Highwayman's theme for the roadtrip section.
This video made me consider making a new character in project zomboid. My current one has like 30 guns and almost infinite ammo and I killed most of the zombies in my area
Make your person human trash and see how long u can go
You can turn on the radio for more lore especially the happenings inside the exclusion zone, coordinates, final messages and weird stuff going on survivor camps, just be watchful of the oncoming helicopter tho.
5:38 short-sighted doesn't actually do anything, so it's free upgrade points
