When I first played this game as a kid I thought the entire game was the little drawing you could mess with on the title screen. When I eventually tapped “adventure” it blew my mind
When I was a kid I thought Pokémon blue was just the inside of the characters house and I couldn’t get out. It blew my mind when I exited the house through the carpet.
I loved SM64DS. Takes everything great about SM64 and builds on it perfectly. The controls never bothered me as a kid, probably because I didn't know any better at the time.
I find the controls fine, but indeed it can be hard at times. However what I love about this game is the camera. You can rotate as much as you want, and if I click it I get the view from BEHIND the character. In the old game, this was difficult with the Lakitu cam, so I couldn't see where I was going. Now with the DS moving around is much more enjoyable thanks to the 360 cam
11:00 I love how you mention Luigi using his invisibility powers to free the chain chomp more easily, but not the fact that he can walk directly into the bars lol
@Hummus: What you said, it does not work, because their is also an invisible wall that only disapear when the chain chomp break the gate, or else an alternate version of the bob-omb clip would work on this version of the game. Unlesss i don't remember correctly, the beter way their is a mega mushroom near by, and that is the better way to do it, since the mega mushroom last a bit longer then the Luigi vanish ability, and if you are still yoshi just used a bomb to blow-up the red brick, does red brick will only appear in Bob-omb battle field starting from star 4 the second time the mario hat appear without unlocking mario, the other red brick behind the mountain that is always their, if it is before star 4, and you break it, it is just a 1-up musrhoom, but starting with star 4 it is a mega mushroom that will look like a Super mushroom, this is why people miss seeing the mega mushroom early on, they break the brick as mario on koopa the quick race for just a 1-up mushroom so they asssume it say like that in Star 4. In Whomp fortress, both red brick that have a mega mushroom will only have a mega mushroom starting on star 3. Later world the Mega mushroom is available from star 1, by but stomp the wood post. Wario jump really bad, but will only need one but stomp to free the chain chomp, the other character would need three but stomp to free the chain chomp, except if they used the mega mushroom, so that way not only invisibility, but only need to but stomp the post one time. Wario is the only one that can break black brick this is wrong. the other character can also break black brick but only with the Mega mushroom
As someone who played Super Mario 64 to death on the Nintendo 64 as a kid, the DS remaster is an absolute joy. Nothing makes me happier than one of my favourite games getting more content, even if it was years later. The game has that Nintendo magic of just extreme high quality with tons of care and attention to make every feel so solid and fun, the game balance to refined they encourage so much messing around in them. The issue at this time in Nintendo's history was people expected a brand new Mario game to come at launch on new Nintendo systems and fans were already annoyed about Luigi's mansion on GameCube. I remember the gaming press especially fed into these.
if 7 year old me could beat this entire game, get every star, and play all the minigames, without question, you know you've made a wonderful game. I beat bowser before I could pronounce the word "know" correctly
It's insane because I know people swear by the original but I can't help but always return to this game. The OG is definitely a better way to experience the game but this game is for the 'Mario-y Mario' Fans. It's great to see updated visuals, new characters and more stars to make the game feel a little more complete. I remember playing this game for the first time on the DS and just being amazed at the fact that you could control Mario in 3D!
Interesting. I am of the opinion that Mario as a series was more interesting when character designs were more fluid, and side games had more unique creatures and characters. One of the things that made Sunshine and World feel so unique was that the enemies looked completely different.
I remember the playground rumours about unlocking Luigi by ground pounding the haunted piano. I tried to defeat that thing for hours. Finding the Luigi painting after all was genuinely one of my happiest moments in gaming.
I remember how me and mybrotger were stuck for months to find Luigi until i acidently used the mario power up. For some days all of the older kids were asking me to unlock him
@L Yeah kind of like the "moon checklist" for Mario Odyssey, that would be nice. But I think ACTUAL fixing of SMS would require removing a good amount of Blue Coins for actual new courses.
I'll never forgive Nintendo for teasing us with the 4th, blank door in the character changing room only for it to be an extremely anti-climactic star. As a kid, the wonder and anticipation I felt for unlocking the door was insane. To this day, it goes down in history as one of the worst disappointments I have ever felt in a game.
I know right?!? Even if you can’t add Waluigi or another character to the game, then at LEAST make it something more than a star 🤨🤨🤨 That’s what the levels are for, not a big, conspicuously unlabeled door next to the other characters’ doors, visible but unopenable from the beginning of the game. I hope whoever decided to do that is at least ashamed. Now I wanna look through these videos and see if it was originally intended to be something else 🤔 I frickin hope so because to have planned it that way from the beginning is diabolical.
This game will forever be in my heart. I've spent so many hours playing it and I don't regret it at all. One of my favorite things to do, once I finished the game, was looking for a way to unlock Waluigi. Yup... I was so obsessed with the idea of unlocking Waluigi that I used to brainstorm and write down various possible ways. Needless to say it was all for nothing, but I had a lot of fun playing this game.
I distinctly remember beating Bowser for the final time in the Walmart parking lot in the back of my aunt's car and hearing the credit music for the very first time.
Mario 64 DS is my favorite Mario game of all time. Something about it just felt so epic and awesome about unlocking each character and going through every level of your choice. Thanks for finally making a video on this game.
@@WheeledHamster lol as if the remake is so colorless and btw the old colors are over saturated shit that hurts my eyes. Just understand if you prefer them it’s your personal opinion. They’re not vibrant, they’re over saturated
Love the visual improvements of this version - I know some people don't like how scratchy the textures can look because of the lack of filtering on the DS, but god, this just looks so much better in my opinion. It's shocking how much improvement Nintendo made in terms of art direction and modeling in less than a decade, on hardware that's weaker than the 64 in some ways, superior in a few others. The models are smoother (despite actually being lower poly than the 64 ones, since each model can be one mesh), the textures are more colorful and detailed, there's more texture variety overall, little details like grass overhanging the edges of cliffs make the whole game feel more cohesive, more models are used in place of billboarded sprites, it's all really amazing to see.
Also on the bowser levels, if I remember correctly, they locked the camera to 8 directions so that one of the 8 d-pad input always lined up with the world as the world was also more linear. And I think that made the game much more manageable with the controls. Also mario insta-turning when completely stopped also helps with the control issue. Overall I think the controls are wayyy more manageable than people make them out to be.
As a DS launch game where the touch screen controls gave 360 control almost as good as a stick, especially with the stylus, most players had never used a touch screen before in 2004, this is way before smartphones. But by offering players the choice to use the inferior controls through the flat DS dpad meant most players were going to try it and not like those controls. It wasn't until 2006 with the Nintendo DS Lite that the console and touchscreens started to become much more accepted.
They definitely are far more manageable than people make them out to be. Honestly never had a problem with them and I put over 100 hours in both the N64 version and the NDS version. The awkward camera angles actually make quite a few things in the original even harder than in the DS version.
@@thenonexistinghero honestly lmao. I don't even remember controls being an issue. I would've preferred an analog stick, but the lack of one didn't throw me off in the slightest. I was hooked as a child!
I remember being in elementary and talking about this game with my friends. When they brought up yoshi as a playable character, I got confused cause he wasn’t playable and we got into an argument cause we claimed to be playing the same game but having different experiences. Then we got to bring our DS to school once and that’s how I found out there was a DS version and I was playing the original the whole time. It definitely blew my mind and I had one of my friends let me borrow his DS version to play it for myself… good times
This is absolutely one of the best Mario games of all time. For a game to have that much content and exploration for its age was insane and it was a lot of content. I’ll never forget being spooked as a kid going up the bowser stairs and it being infinite
Super Mario 64 DS _____ should be the launch title for Nintendo's next console. They could add waluigi and peach as playable characters, push the stars up to 200 or 250 fix the controls add a bathroom and other functional rooms to peach's castle it'd be great! Seriously tho a port of the DS version to switch with a touch up on the controls would be sweet
@@LinkNinjaMaster Yep. Imo having hacked both it's way easier on the 3DS too. Mine is loaded down with Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Genesis, Super Nintendo, TurboGrafx, DS, and even a few PS1 games. You have to jump through a few extra hoops for DS games but you can have them all right there on the main menu of your 3DS it's pretty awesome.
@@THNF89 Yeah I know about 3DS hacking, it is indeed awesome. I have it hacked as well, although I prefer to play NES and SNES on my (also hacked) Switch on Retroarch, due to the CRT filters, but I also have several games on the 3DS, including the native Mario 64 port. I just didn't know SM64 DS was playable with 360 C-pad movement since I had looked for a solution for ages without success, but apparently somebody found how to implement it like three months ago from what I found just today.
8-way digital movement didn't bother me since the camera controls were better so it was pretty easy to align things properly. What DID bother me was needing to hold down the RUN BUTTON 99% of the time, which also made doing various jumps/kicks/dives practically impossible. Should've been a toggle. Or it should've defaulted to run, with the ability to hold a button to slow-walk.
This game has a special place in my heart, played it a lot in 7th grade around 2012 after making a new friend who I got along with so well, which was really hard for me because I was a shy kid at a new school. Unfortunately that friend has since passed away in 2015 so this game keeps his memory alive for me, in a weird way.
@@SoggySlopster I know, the game was my sisters and she had it well before that but she grew out of video games so I just took her stuff, also, you can play old games way after other consoles are established :) the 3DS is backwards compatible and I played it on my 3DS
I’m sorry for your loss pal. I’ll never forget playing multiplayer with my old buds back in middle school as well. I miss when things were so simple and all we had to worry about was who had the most stars or how much battery you had left on the DS. I’m glad we both cherish those memories we had with others despite being initially shy👍
Gonna write a little nostalgia piece, but this game holds a special place in my heart. I remember being 4 years old back in 2009 getting a DS Lite with this game. After going through surgery. All my time in bed recovering was put into this game and all the hours held a special memory including finally beating bowser in the sky. So yes this game is amazing
I love the fact that luigi's twirl is a reference to a cut move in the original mario 64, which we can only see in some footage of the beta. I guess luigi did his homework before joining for the remake 👍
this game to me is a great remake. i grew up playing this game and beating it a countless amount of times, and from how much i played it, it made me start to speedrun the game in 80 stars. i first played it when i was 3 years old (i know thats very young) and loved this game so much. it was also the first game i 100% on in my life and from how many characters there are, it made me love it! it was also one of the first games i played in my life. i also loved palying the mini games, and the VS mode with my brother and my cousins. we played together almost weekly and since i was the one who played the game the most, i was the best out of all of them for most of my life. i also loved trying to challenge myself how to use Luigi's backflip to do shortcuts, like the mario wall kick in CCM, a backflip off the ship for a skip to get Blast To The Stone Pillar in JRB, and a backflip to skip the cannon for Blast To The Lonely Mushroom in TTM. overall, i think this game is better than the original, mainly because its my childhood and im a speedrunner, but i rate this game a 10/10. im not putting any hate into he original, because i like that one also and i speedrun 16 star in it, but i rate the original a 7/10.
I love almost everything about this game, and I’ve somehow never had any problem with the controls after getting 100%. They need to bring back a minigame collection or port it to switch using the analog stick. That would be awesome!
Yeah, the controls are nightmarish. They might be even worse on the 3DS where despite having a analog stick, it still outputs as a DPAD making the controls feel even more misleading.
True I don’t know why anyone would like the controls. Only walking in 8 directions and having to hold down a run button is as counterintuitive for a Mario game as it can be
I do enjoy this version more outside of the controls being inferior. Even though I don't even think the controls are that bad anyway. A lot of the ideas introduced aren't fully realised and the multiple character thing is handled a bit weirdly with the hat mechanic. But you have more levels, bosses and just more content in general. If they ever remake this game I would like the new content to be included anyway.
If only they would. This game just feels like the more complete and fulfilled Mario 64. It made the original feel so empty and I can’t understand why they just remake and re-release the original instead, completely ignoring it
@@Hamantha for the switch collection, it makes sense. That's the legit order (in general). However, they can make the game a stand alone switch game and it would probably sell well.
Is literally the best controls you could have in a D-Pad... That being said, if the game was for the 3DS it would have been received as a masterpiece because that's really what's holding the game back and you notice it on side flips.
The mini-game collection is one of the better ones I can remember from that special era after the rise of handhelds and before the rise of mobile phone games. I hardly played mini-games as a kid, but I was totally addicted to this collection. Road trip nostalgia. Especially Luigi's casino I was addicted to that stuff.
I was recently playing Super Mario 64 DS and I was reminded why I love playing 3D Maio games while playing that because even though I played SM64 several of times before, it's fresh each time because I can choose what stages I can play and many missions have several ways to beat them. For instance, in Tall, Tall Mountain, there's a star locked up behind grates that you get by finding a secret slide, but if you use Luigi's special flower ability, you can bypass that slide! In Big Boo's Haunt, the first mission locks you to the first floor, but with Mario's wall jump, you can get another star early if you want! In Hazy Maze Cave, right on the door to the left, there is a star high above that you are supposed to find while exploring the large labyrinth, however, you can actually get it right there by doing a precise triple jump on the black box with Luigi! in Bob-om Battlefield, collecting red coins is so much easier if you happen to have already unlocked the wing cap and the cannons! In Lethal Lava Land, there's a star that you are supposed to get by rolling over a log, but it's also behind a metal grate, so if you use Luigi's flower, you can skip the whole thing. You can even use the wing cap as a third method to conquer it! It just feels so awesome finding a new method to beat these classic stages. The game rewards you for knowing the game and its mechanics and world!
Um... literally all of these things can be done in the original.... The gate in TTM isn't there in the original, you can get there with a simple jump kick, you can use a triple jump in BBH even in the original to skip star 1, in HMC you can get the star high up by simply using a sideflips with some wall kicks, the BOB thing you mentioned doesn't depend on the DS's additions, and you altready mentioned using the wing cap in LLL. So....huh?
Fr like with the HMC, the star near the elevator at the other side of the grid, I could take luigi's invisibility power from dory's lake, take the elevator back up in time to get the star. The stars in the rainbow level are so much easier with luigi's spin jump, like I could go at the top of the level or less high, and do the backflip spin and go for those stars instead of doing the parkour parts which are so annoying to do. The whomp level with the star in a cage is literally done in seconds with the owl in the tree and that's the only method I used to obtain that star and I never knew what that long wood plank was for!
The emotions I felt as a kid playing this game. I was so amazed of the open world aspect. The mysteries always got to me. I remember being so scared that my heart would beat out of my chest every time I watched a UA-cam video about unlocking Waluigi. Idk why those videos creeped me out so much.
This game felt like the future when the first ds came out. To see 3d graphics and such an expansive world in a portable blew my mind. It's all about playing on the og blue or Grey ds with the janky thumb stylus on the strap
Loved this game as a kid! The extra levels, enemies, characters, and mini games have it a whole new feel. Wish there was a rom hack where they use the original engine but include all of the DS stuff. As much as I like the DS version, the D-pad just couldn’t beat the joystick for me.
A soon as I got Luigi he was the only character I used for mostly every star (except of course for the ones that specifically needed the other 3) because that helicopter spin + the flutter jump made the star collecting fun and easy
This game amazed me. Was the first game where I experienced a 3D rendered world to play in. My jaw was open the whole time I played it at a store. I was so excited that you could go in any direction. Completely normal today, but wild and novel at the time.
People who harp on SM64DS are probably just some kind of elitist sweaty speed runners or something. Never underestimate "competitive" people's drive to try ruin things for others.
I'm not a speedrunner of any kind, and just beat this game. The original is miles better, the controls are just so terrible that makes the experience miserable, the camera is ok better than the n64 one.
I think both are worth playing, despite the controls is DS not being as good as the original's, Nintendo did definitely do almost all that they could to make it feel good with a D-Pad. Even though I go back to both games every once in a while, I still prefer the OG because I think some of DS's changes water down the experience.
Seeing that DS download play screen just made a wave of memories wash over me woah! Also I think this is the only Mario game where Yoshi moves in all directions (besides side to side) and isn’t just a ride for Mario/Luigi. We NEED a 3-D yoshi island! :)
I don't see anyone talking about the truly baffling decision to start the DS version as Yoshi and make Mario an unlockable character in his own damn game. If Nintendo really wanted to go so far to differentiate this version from the original, they should have just made a different game altogether. Every time I see people talk about this being a good/superior remake, I feel like I am on crazy pills.
I'm very grateful to this game. Back in my youth my dad had a heart attack, and was in critical condition for several weeks. His heart actually stopped a few times, but the medics managed to bring him back. This game was the one thing, aside from my Lord, who held me in place. My head was a mess, tears wouldn't stop and yet I found comfort in escaping to this colorful world of Mario 64 DS. My dad managed to fully recover, and looking back I feel so grateful to this game, that whole situation would have been so much more unbearable without it...
I loved playing Luigi Jack. Also, you can fight bowser with the other characters. It is only stage three that locks you into Mario. If you fight him with Yoshi a hat will appear after a fire attack.
@@wariolandgoldpiramid yeah pretty much but that's also the good thing about like the situation he was describing With Luigi and the power up you have already two ways to solve the star Either to be untouchable and do it how it's supposed to be done or you cheat with the ability
People who played this game with the Dpad, instead of using touch movement controls, and then decided it was a bad game. Yall upset me lol 😂 The DS remake was fantastic, just needs to be used with touch movement to get full enjoyment. Or emulate with analog stick maybe?
6:27 finding the portraits was THE BEST feeling ever, I remember my friends and I all helping each other get to certain areas and handing our DS’s back and fourth
My hope for a potential Mario All Stars Deluxe on a new console: Super Mario 64: -Make the camera like odyssey -Graphics completely remade: HD texture complete with smooth polygon -Included DS Content: there is original, DS and modern when you start a file -Polish up some levels in the ‘modern layout’, it is based on DS -Better wall jumping and maybe spin jump -16:9 support Super Mario Sunshine -Gyro control with fludd -Turn down the blur filter -A modern mode with tweaked levels and blue coin location -A hint for blue coins. Super Mario Galaxy -Nothing Super Mario Galaxy 2 -Added
One thing I adore are the parallels to the original in the ending Except most of the focus is on Yoshi. I like that a lot. Like Yoshi looking up to the sky and camera and being called for instead of Mario.
My biggest gripe with this game wasn't the controls but the camera; sometimes I would move it but it would start moving back to its original position as soon as I stopped pressing the touch screen. Why would I move the camera if I wanted it to go back to its original angle? It made it a lot harder to platform some things because, like you mentioned, there were only 8 directions to work with, and I wanted to at least get my camera angle to a point where it lined up with one of those 8 directions.
The only bad things about this game are the controls being a bit jank at times (though the og suffers the same problem in it's own ways) and the multiple-character mechanic being kinda weird. There's pretty much no point in playing as the three plumbers outside of their mandatory encounters when Yoshi can start as any of them or find their caps in the overworld.
@@kaiserbill25 i think its pretty cool that they kinda show that youre not really turning into that character but you take their physical form and abilities
It really funny they released this game 2004 for Nintendo DS during GBA time. I thought this game was like 2006 part of New Super Mario Bros. I guess the reason they did that was because they were competitive with Sony that made PSP Portable that time
@Mario87456 I suppose, but it still annoys me to the point where i just go to the character doors, though I guess it's probably not a big deal for others.
Just a thing to add: You can fight Bowser 1 and 2 as Luigi or Wario, but the game softlocks I think? I remember fighting him as Luigi and being stuck on a black screen after collecting the key. Also I 100%'d the game with the D-pad, I don't know how little kid me managed to do it, but I did. Final Bowser's a pain though- I'd get the first two throws right, but would only miss the final one because I can't aim well and spinning with the D-pad for that long actually hurt my thumb. I did collect all 150 stars, so I might as well have beaten it
I genuinely think this is the best way to play Mario 64 what with its additions being good that I can look past the lack of analog stick. If Nintendo ever remakes 64 a second time, I want them to not only base it off 64 DS but add even more like new courses. Also I wish we had gotten an original 3D Mario for the DS, one designed with the DS's control's in mind
You forgot to mention the other benefits of playing Wario. He's stronger all around. Not only can he break black bricks, but he: 1. knocks enemies farther (If you have his metal form, you can beat bullies by simply walking into them and are unfazed) 2. Can run carrying heavy objects (Including King Bob-Omb lol) 3. Can butt-slam pillars down in one hit instead of 3 like Mario and Luigi 4. Isn't pushed as far by enemies running into him like bullies in the lava level 5. Can throw items farther. Practically across the map. Allowing you to basically snipe some enemies from long range. Wario makes boss fights stupidly easy. Hit them once or twice and you win.
I played the both versions in their respective times, and while the DS version was a bit awkward to control with the d-pad, it's now my prefered version due to the extra levels, less blurry textures and multiple characters.
@Ezzran its genuinely one of the biggest phenomenons ive seen on youtube, not only was it at the top for me, its literally Nathan's Bandy and its a funny comment. HOW????
I love this game so much. Once I finally beat it in 5th grade, I found out about action replay and used to use the clone code (it was like the double cherry in 3DW, but this was even before 3DL) and tried to beat the game with two Marios. Sometimes the code would let you have up to 7 clones, but if you went over 3, the game would crash if you tried to go in peach’s castle.
I remember the absolute shock of seeing this game existing and running on a handheld. Before that, it was pretty much unheard of to have a game with 3d graphics on a handheld that wasn't doom-like.
I mean, a mario game with bad platforming is like a racing game with bad steering or a puzzle game that requires zero thought. It's not only vital to the game but to the genre as a whole. So if you want to play Mario 64 DS just emulate it with the full analog controls mod, don't bother with using a DS or Wii U
As someone who never played the original, I've always liked this game a lot. Maybe it's because I grew up in the 90's on 16-bit consoles, but the D-pad only controls didn't bother me. The mere fact you could now play a game originally made for Nintendo 64, but with upgraded graphics and more content alone was absolutely mindblowing at the time. Also agree that the mini-games were an absolute blast. I actually did spend quite a lot of time playing those.
There are more problems with this game than just the controls. First off, the jump kick is pretty much useless in the DS remake because you lose all your momentum after you use it. While in the original you're able to go further backward with it. (it's also more useful in the original for climbing up walls when you're sliding to your death). They removed the ability to long jump into a wall and do a wall jump which removes a lot more movement options than you'd think. That's especially the case when you play rom hacks. One other thing I found stupid is that there are sometimes those red ? boxes that let out a bob-omb instead of a power flower just why? Also, because the wing, metal, and vanish caps are given to Mario, Luigi, and Wario respectively it makes the courses you'd have to go to activate them (except the wing cap course) feel very underwhelming since there's no switch for them basically removing the point of them. Also, with Yoshi why is his special ability literally just him shooting 3 streams of fire when he can literally do that same thing by just licking up a campfire three times? Sure it makes it more convenient but tell me when will you ever need to unfreeze something more than once in one mission? Also, remember the location for the "Watch for rolling rocks" star? Yeah, that place is practically pointless to have there since the star is no longer up there. Also, I don't know if it's just me but I feel that long jumps don't go as far as in the original. And don't even get me started on trying to rotate Bowser with the d-pad it's so bad that even Super Mario 63 does a better job at it. Whenever I play that game it feels like I'm being limited to my platform abilities (kinda like holding a Wii remote and nunchuck the wrong way playing Super Mario Galaxy). It's like I always have to stand still before performing something because I feel like I have more of a chance to fail it by going into things headfirst. Personally, I think this game somehow looks uglier than on the original. I think this is due to the game looking more like a polygon and pixelated game (like 2D and 3D) clashing at one another instead of full-on polygon. Here's another thing full-on multiplayer. They wanted multiplayer in the original and could have done it here but didn't (and no that multiplayer mode doesn't count). What a waste of an opportunity. Lastly, there's the reward for getting 100% in the game. In the original, you would unlock the cannon and meet Yoshi on the roof who would give you 100 1-ups, a message from the Super Mario 64 team, and a new triple jump. But in this game, there's nothing up there other than the 3-ups and the Wing Cap (which were also in the original). So basically you get nothing new for completing the game(In fact, you get even less than what you'd get in the original). What a disappointment for anyone who went through that entire experience only to realize that they just wasted their time.
The critique is fine, but you could’ve easily boiled your talking points down to a brief paragraph. There was no reason for it to be three huge ones. Most of the first paragraph could be omitted entirely since its only purpose was to mention that the post game reward was disappointing compared to the original. The third paragraph just states the same thing. So the meat of this critique is in the second paragraph, but you incorporate too many personal experiences where they aren’t necessary
I know I'm the odd one out, but truthfully, I've just never seen the D-Pad controls as much of a hindrance when compared to the analog of the original, amd i think the reason for this was the massive improvements made to the game's camera. In the original, I feel as though I constantly miss jumps and accidentally walk off platforms simply because the camera forces me to move the analogue stick in an incredibly awkward and unnatural manner. I've never encountered this issue in the DS version since the camera can be positioned pretty much anywhere surrounding Mario, as opposed to 4 different set camera angles. Guess I just value analog camera controls more than analog movement controls.
I didn't find the controls difficult at all. What I love also is that you can always operate the camera 360 degrees, which includes right BEHIND the character which makes moving around much easier than in the original cuz you can SEE where you're going. In the old game, you cannot always see, cuz the Lakitu camera SUCKS ASS So this is a FANTASTIC remake
Just 100 percented this game again i played it si much as a kid i didnt even realize the controls were bad i just enjoyed finding all the secrets and exploring the world and enjoying myself way to much to care about controls. Playing it again after playing other titles i realized that the controls weren’t that good but i still loved replaying this game.
Personally I love Super Mario 64 DS over the original, the situation of using the D Pad to move can be easily solved by playing it on a Nintendo 3DS because of the Circle Pad which makes it so much easier to move the characters or play it on Wii U via Virtual Console because of the Joy Stick. Also I love the updated visuals and graphics and that each character has different abilities and different power ups and only certain characters can be used to complete the missions so I don't have any problems. 🙂
I grew up with the DS remake, and I actually play the game on a 3DS. I prefer the Circle Pad, even though I only move in 8 directions still. To make up for it, the controls were made to feel natural with the D-Pad.
Correction on the minigames. The game you're referring to isn't called Luigi-Jack. That's Picture Poker. Luigi-Jack does exist in the vs mode in New Super Mario Bros, though.
I feel like you've looked a bit too deep into the limiting of the E3 demo. It was only a few months between that demo and release, there's no way they'd rework the entire game in that time.
Yeah, people tend to gloss over too much how awful the camera in that game is and how it is actually clunkier to control as a beginner, although at the end the original definitely controls better.
@@N12015The camera is not bad. And it was the first game to utilize that type of cam. Many games released after it that actually had bad cameras were quickly forgotten because bad camera is something that's noticeable and makes the game unplayable. You're just complaining for the sake of complaining.
8:55 the way Wario plays kind of feels like the devs completely forgot how he played prior to his creator passed away. Coming from the perspective how someone that didn’t play the DS port, Wario was executed differently, he could have had his elbow charge attack that serves as a speed boost and an attack (basically Pizza Tower style but without initial running start needed), his ground pound could stun enemies nearby so they could be thrown at other enemies, and he could maybe have his downhill rolling mechanic if they figured out a way to make it work situationally. His charge attack is also really similar to how most of the enemies and bosses behave in the game too so it’s super weird how they didn’t figure out how to make his move set work in a way that he could have literally did charge attack jousting with bosses. This was even his move set in his first appearance on Gameboy too.
My opinion in short: Loved the new content. Kid me would have killed to play as Luigi, as well as Yoshi and Wario. More secret stars like the one behind the mirror makes for a beefier game. It just doesn't play nearly as well on the DS. From what I've heard, the N64 and its joystick were built to play Mario 64. Downgrading that to the 4 directional D-pad and having to hold a button to run didn't feel nearly as fun.
My only serious gripe with the game is the lack of analogue stick support. The d-pad lacks the necessary precision, and the touch screen running just doesn't cut it at all, preventing you from holding the controller properly, and having problems related to running out of touch screen space.
The one thing that always annoys me when talking about this game's controls, is that nobody talks about the the little stylus clip that came with the OG Nintendo DS. It was on a string that you could attach to your DS. You then could put the small clip on your thumb and use the touch screen like an analog stick with your thumb. The game controlled beautifully with it! For whatever reason no other game, at least to my knowledge, used this gimmick again and Nintendo didn't package the clip in subsequent DS revisions. Which is a shame tbh.
Hot take: I think this is better than the N64 version. I never had too much issue with the DS controls, and even if you did, this is on the Wii U's Virtual Console, fixing the problem. This should have been included in 3D All-Stars instead of the original (or at the very least, alongside it).
@@redacted2275 I disagree. People hardly ever talk about Super Mario 64 DS. Usually when people praise Super Mario 64, they are referring to the N64 version. Plus, the DS controls for the game is brought up as a big issue for a lot of people.
I was hoping that the DS version would be the version in 3D All-Stars. My thoughts were that the minigames could be played online with other people and the controls would be revamped for a full 3D experience.
I think it's pretty neat the the start of the game feels like a reimagining but I wish they went even harder with extra levels and extra missions. I just default to Yoshi most of the time because of instant cap access.
How I would fix Wario, is making him more like his Wario Land self, taking less damage from enemies (to reference how he can't die) and giving him more speed options. Shoulder bash, and faster swimming. I feel like Wario was really wanted to be heavily used in the water stages, so why not give him a faster swim than the rest. It would really highlight the Speedrun elements of his games. Instead of being the slow and fat one, he'd be the big tough hard to control but fun to master character, with huge advantages once you get past the fact he still jumps really low and has slower turns. That's how you make Wario a fun character to play as
Funny that you mention the prototype being a competitive multiplayer focused game. Because the game’s cover art gave me the impression that it would be an on-foot racing game for multiple players, when i laid eyes pn it for the very first time back in the day. So in a way, you could say the cover art reflects the original intentions.
How did a game from 2004 on a DS have graphics like that? Kind of makes Pokemon XY and Sun & Moon on the 3DS look like hot garbage if they could have made graphics of this quality what, 10 years back? I know graphics aren't everything, but when you can make graphics like that on a DS, possibilities for what could have been made for a handheld for the time could have been mindblowing
the ds is indeed strange with most systems the later games had the best graphics but not the ds i think the the early 2000s and 90s there was a mindset of we must have the best graphics possible no matter what .this actually ruined some games because they had low frame rates or high system requirements on pc even on handhelds there was a race to make the first 3d handheld games even on the original game boy and game boy color there were some attempts and consoles like the ngage tried to be all about 3d . but at least on handhelds most gamers didn't care about that they would just say who cares console and pc games already did this years ago. i think that because of the rise of the internet and games like runescape and Minecraft and flash games as well as more feedback from fans caused game companies to realise that you can be successful even with low end graphics. and when it came to the ds 3d gaming was possible but it was hard to make it fun .

I find the controls fine, but indeed it can be hard at times. However what I love about this game is the camera. You can rotate as much as you want, and if I click it I get the view from BEHIND the character. In the old game, this was difficult with the Lakitu cam, so I couldn't see where I was going.

Seriously tho a port of the DS version to switch with a touch up on the controls would be sweet
imagine if this game got an HD version with full 360 degree movement
Suddenly you'll be overturning constantly
Not an HD version but if you hack a 3DS you can patch the game so you can control it with the 3DS circle pad and it's amazing

@@THNF89 Yeah I know about 3DS hacking, it is indeed awesome.

What do you mean by not fully realised ideas? What would you have liked to see differently?
If you want to play a better version of Mario 64, just play Banjo Kazooie instead
The gate in TTM isn't there in the original, you can get there with a simple jump kick,
you can use a triple jump in BBH even in the original to skip star 1, in HMC you can get the star high up by simply using a sideflips with some wall kicks, the BOB thing you mentioned doesn't depend on the DS's additions, and you altready mentioned using the wing cap in LLL.

A soon as I got Luigi he was the only character I used for mostly every star (except of course for the ones that specifically needed the other 3) because that helicopter spin + the flutter jump made the star collecting fun and easy

People who played this game with the Dpad, instead of using touch movement controls, and then decided it was a bad game. Yall upset me lol 😂
The DS remake was fantastic, just needs to be used with touch movement to get full enjoyment. Or emulate with analog stick maybe?
This has always been such an overhated game in my eyes. I recently re100%ed it on Wii U Virtual Console and had as much fun with it as always.
6:27 finding the portraits was THE BEST feeling ever, I remember my friends and I all helping each other get to certain areas and handing our DS’s back and fourth
My hope for a potential Mario All Stars Deluxe on a new console:
Super Mario 64:
-Make the camera like odyssey
-Graphics completely remade: HD texture complete with smooth polygon
-Included DS Content: there is original, DS and modern when you start a file
-Polish up some levels in the ‘modern layout’, it is based on DS
-Better wall jumping and maybe spin jump
-16:9 support
Super Mario Sunshine
-Gyro control with fludd
-Turn down the blur filter
-A modern mode with tweaked levels and blue coin location
-A hint for blue coins.
Super Mario Galaxy
-Nothing
Super Mario Galaxy 2
-Added
One thing I adore are the parallels to the original in the ending
Except most of the focus is on Yoshi. I like that a lot.
Like Yoshi looking up to the sky and camera and being called for instead of Mario.
This was amazing. PLEASE do Super Mario Sunshine next!
The lack of a cap or something to turn into yoshi is another problem. Also, hearing the wrong voice clips when using caps is really jarring.
@@kaiserbill25 i think its pretty cool that they kinda show that youre not really turning into that character but you take their physical form and abilities
It really funny they released this game 2004 for Nintendo DS during GBA time. I thought this game was like 2006 part of New Super Mario Bros. I guess the reason they did that was because they were competitive with Sony that made PSP Portable that time
@@kaiserbill25 I am pretty sure the “wrong voice clips” were intentional to remind you that the character just took on a new form.
Yeah, 3D World proved that 8 directional 3D Mario can work if the camera and levels are designed for it.
3D Mario just wasn't there yet unfortunately
@@monopolyrubix1875 Let me just point out that 64 DS did gradual turning instead of locking you to 8 directions.
the controls are fucked in general
Also maybe add a post-game to make Peach playable (maybe add Daisy, Rosalina, Waluigi and Toadette too, hehe).
@@misterzygarde6431That’s a big part of why it feels so bad to control I think
This game was a solid part of childhood. At 28, I still like to believe we will find Waluigi someday.
You forgot to mention the other benefits of playing Wario. He's stronger all around. Not only can he break black bricks, but he:
1. knocks enemies farther (If you have his metal form, you can beat bullies by simply walking into them and are unfazed)
2. Can run carrying heavy objects (Including King Bob-Omb lol)
3. Can butt-slam pillars down in one hit instead of 3 like Mario and Luigi
4. Isn't pushed as far by enemies running into him like bullies in the lava level
The answer is yes'nt

@@D0M0C0RE I am incredibly surprised it doesn't have more.
Not sure why anyone would even CONSIDER thinking this is a bad game...
I don't remember the game looking this _good._ Is this footage from some kind of enhanced emulator?
Gorgeous looking DS game.
Yeah it didn't look like this on the DS
I mean, a mario game with bad platforming is like a racing game with bad steering or a puzzle game that requires zero thought. It's not only vital to the game but to the genre as a whole. So if you want to play Mario 64 DS just emulate it with the full analog controls mod, don't bother with using a DS or Wii U
64 DS is my favorite video game of all time
Nostalgia is truly one of the greatest human weaknesses, second only to the neck
@@joshevans3421this game ain't perfect but it's pretty Great
Yeah i liked this game its one of my favorites

In the old game, you cannot always see, cuz the Lakitu camera SUCKS ASS
So this is a FANTASTIC remake
Stupid comment
In the 3DS and Wii U, there are patches for analog controls. For the wii U im 100% sure as i have tried it
Keep up the great work boss! I've thoroughly enjoyed everything you've released so far :)
Some of y'all don't understand the hype of playing the VS mode with random kids on your bus to school

i love this game it was one of my first 3D Mario games too play as a kid it had fun levels
I feel like you've looked a bit too deep into the limiting of the E3 demo. It was only a few months between that demo and release, there's no way they'd rework the entire game in that time.
Tbh I always found the original harder to control because of how bad the camera is. Maybe that's just because I played DS first as a kid
The controls being faulty is probably the console's fault, and i'm not saying it's a bad handheld, i'm just saying they could've worked around that.
I liked this game more than the original
My only serious gripe with the game is the lack of analogue stick support. The d-pad lacks the necessary precision, and the touch screen running just doesn't cut it at all, preventing you from holding the controller properly, and having problems related to running out of touch screen space.
Love these videos mate 64 ds is one of my favourite childhood Games
The one thing that always annoys me when talking about this game's controls, is that nobody talks about the the little stylus clip that came with the OG Nintendo DS. It was on a string that you could attach to your DS. You then could put the small clip on your thumb and use the touch screen like an analog stick with your thumb. The game controlled beautifully with it!
For whatever reason no other game, at least to my knowledge, used this gimmick again and Nintendo didn't package the clip in subsequent DS revisions. Which is a shame tbh.
A moment of silence to all the people who were let down when they found out that Waluigi wasn’t in this game.
I only have 2 complaints , ds had no joystick and they keep making remakes on a handheld which doesn’t let it live up to its potential
Hot take: I think this is better than the N64 version. I never had too much issue with the DS controls, and even if you did, this is on the Wii U's Virtual Console, fixing the problem. This should have been included in 3D All-Stars instead of the original (or at the very least, alongside it).
That's the coldest take you could have... a lot of people think that. 😒
0:40 “The Nintendo Diaz” 💯

Nah it isn't considering the hardware capabilities, basically it lacked a joystick but now with the modded version for 3ds it's perfect.

Hey
"At the end of the day, Super Mario 64 DS is a great remake."
Has Vailskibum energy lol
No, it's not.
I think it's pretty neat the the start of the game feels like a reimagining but I wish they went even harder with extra levels and extra missions. I just default to Yoshi most of the time because of instant cap access.
it was an amazing remake in my opinion

I liked it.
I had an N64 but never had SM64.
However I also had a DS and fully beat 64DS on it, it was great.
