Excellent work, I love hearing all the work you put into this, I just spent best part of a week automating removal of textures that are unused from a port project of mine just because I want to save every last byte! I sincerely hope I can find the time to play your work through one day.
Seeing your work on SM64 has made me think about all the things that could be done to other games. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark running 4-player split screen at a solid 30 fps. Majora's Mask running at a higher resolution in widescreen at a stable 30 fps. Super Smash Bros. with more detailed character models, higher resolution textures, and a more stable 60 fps. I'm not suggesting that YOU would be the one to make all these optimizations, but that your work would inspire others!
3 дні тому+5
It's probably easier to get these things done, if you just run them on an emulator on more powerful modern hardware. If you just want to see the games in what they could have been. Restricting yourself to original hardware is just for a massive and very impressive flex, but doesn't make playing the games better.
Oh my goodness I would love to have perfect dark to be completely reworked and 100% polished with new menu setups and everything. More maps would be a lot awesome too
majoras mask has already been recompiled for PC, higher framerates and resolution without breaking the source code, I would check Nerrel's video about it
I'm not sure if much else can be done for GE/PD. Rareware were easily the most experienced N64 devs next to Factor 5. They're roughly comparable to Kaze'e level. Some improvements are probably possible but I don't see it being as transformative as Mario 64 (Literally one of the earliest 64 games). Then again who knows!
Damn, whatever you do, people are never happy! You make them new licenses and they complain about the absence of their childhood games, you make new episodes of their favorite saga and they will say that you are lazy and that you are counting on the success of your old games, you release a game quickly and they will say that it is poorly optimized, you take your time to polish it well and they will say that you are too long, in short do not listen to everyone, you do a good and exciting job, me who has never managed to understand programming despite all the efforts I put into it, what you do is as if you achieved what I wanted to do by having learned C#, you are one of the rare UA-camrs that I watch instantly when I see one of their new videos, continue because I think that everyone here wants to see what the ultimate version of Mario 64 will be like if it were 100% optimized and for impatient people there are a lot of other games and other things to do in life so it's up to them to get a life.

You were the game dev that taught me something important about the gaming industry. Retro games were made with limitations and deadlines in mind and thus, while it did lead to innovation and timeless game design sensibilities, usually never took full advantage of game console hardware. Nowadays we take stuff like this for granted because every modern gaming system allows much leeway for lacking optimization (much to our detriment), but knowing that developers, given the time and resources the gaming industry just couldn't provide them at the time, could have fully utilized game console hardware for games like Mario 64 is tragic to me. It's projects like this that make me really happy to know that the Nintendo 64 is finally reaching its full potential.
Your comment sections are always full of support and kindness. Don’t let a couple trolls affect you, they’re just desperate for attention. Also people asking for a release are just excited! I asked almost the same a few videos back, going higher means more pixels to fill, and this game will be fill rate limited so no way, most N64 games are 240p anyway

I started seeing your posts on Twitter detailing your findings and progress. Very excited to see the rest of this journey and try your game when it releases!
I just find your videos talking about all the stuff you're doing really interesting as someone who wants to make games themselves. I have a fondness for the consoles of the 90's and love learning about how they worked and how developers did cool stuff with their code.
I am a robotics engineer not affiliated with any video game or animation rendering things and I still enjoy to see all the mathematical, visual and computational tricks to improve the performance on the N64! Keep up with your work, and thanks for sharing!
When you successfully release your ROM hack and maybe even release Mario 64 1.1 Optimized Edition... man, it'd be absolutely sick if you followed that up with like a Zelda OoT/MM engine rewrite as well. I think that'd be the most hype imaginable followup to this Mario 64 miracle you've worked, especially if the engine rewrite can not only get the game running natively on an N64 at a stable frame rate but also then be further ported to a recompilation like Ship of Harkinian. You're a legend, Kaze. As someone who has been a console hardware and emulation enthusiast since the 90s I cannot wait to see how deep this rabbit hole truly goes. Seeing the N64 pushed to these kinds of heights feels almost vindicating, based on the things I understood about the N64 back then that were never realized outside of an EXTREME minority of games (like Factor 5's Star Wars games - hell of a call-out!).
Been following your content for years and it’s actually really fun and comforting to just listen to you yap about math stuff that I slept on in high school and college. I don’t know if there’s anyone else out there making content that way lol Keep going, take your time and congrats on becoming a dad!

1:53 I think that's the reasson why like so much seeing the N64 potential, there's so much graphical fidelity between both generations, seeing the what if (things were optimized) resolved makes my brain chemistry go vroom vroom
Excellent work, I love hearing all the work you put into this, I just spent best part of a week automating removal of textures that are unused from a port project of mine just because I want to save every last byte! I sincerely hope I can find the time to play your work through one day.
Your project I'm hyped for it
Seeing your work on SM64 has made me think about all the things that could be done to other games.
More maps would be a lot awesome too
majoras mask has already been recompiled for PC, higher framerates and resolution without breaking the source code, I would check Nerrel's video about it
We need those inspirations
Crazy how a game from 1996 can be modded so far and have so many ROM hacks to the point where new games can be made
The rom hacking community has basically done this for the past decade tbh
@ Yeah, it’s crazy how they do that, very impressive
And anyone can do it too, they just need to learn some game dev stuff
@ true that, i actually wanna learn game dev too
There's lots of romhacks for Super Mario Bros and Super Mario World, too. These are even older.
This is a perfect example of people not understanding that there are real people behind their favorite content creators. Keep going strong, Kaze!
been patiently waiting and avoiding spoilers as much as possible for your game, really nice update and i am so excited to play it once it's out
crazy that you're a dad now as well, that was shocker LMFAO congratulations kaze, you're doing amazing, the modding GOAT
Man, I don't think you need to justify yourself. Take your time, do whatever you feel is necessary to make the best result. It is so inspiring to be seeing all these years of progress and how far you've come. Thank you for making these amazing games !
I share the exact same sentiment. Longer he takes to make the game, the better it will be.
I really wish more creators would make a video like this, explaining their intentions from their own perspective. Super great, up front, no BS.
Hopefully you develop a game because I will support you
@Criticmasterz D'aw shucks, I'd like to someday
@TheMAM nice
Will baby kaze 2 make sm64 romhacks too?
hopefully
He’ll probably hack Super Mario Sunshine instead, being the next generation and all
@@thatdanjamesguy.330then baby kaze 2’s kid will romhack galaxy then the cycle repeats to the next 3d marios🗣️🗣️🗣️
@@thatdanjamesguy.330 it's a she! and ive got a feeling she'll like zelda more than mario
@@mek2472 This man right here ^ speaked facts ngl .
Your comment sections are always full of support and kindness. Don’t let a couple trolls affect you, they’re just desperate for attention.
Also people asking for a release are just excited! And if you don’t release it soon it literally doesn’t matter, they’ll still be excited when you do release it.
Dude you should get Pannenkœk in an in person podcast

The interaction between them would be like Isaac newton and Albert Einstein
I knew what I was getting into from the start.
I subscribed purely for the optimization videos and the great explanations.
Great job.
Crazy how you went the entire video without mentioning Kaze Collab! If you ask me, that hack is surefire proof of your commitment to releasing finished projects in a timely manner!
I played Kaze Collab and it changed my life!
rom hacker jamboree
Ich hab den Größten Respekt vor deiner Arbeit 👍
its so crazy to me people still do this for free, youre doing the work of an entire mainstream highly profittable company for no money in mind at all,
i will absolutely download and play this on my everdrive for the real n64 experience
Attention is money, views is money, donos are money etc. Its what nintendo uses as leverage to make it be an enterprise to bump up their threats when they make them
Please god, do not ever let Nintendo find this man. I'm terrified of what they'd do.
im sure nintendo is watching quietly. they probably wont do anything though cause im sure kaze know how to handle the situation.
Actually if I remember correctly
Nintendo already found him
The Mario 64 online is dead because of it
That's why we got a new Mario 64 online is made by different people
Is nice thought he still making stuff
I'll be honest: your channel makes me feel stupid. I could never do what you do, or think the way you do when it comes to programming, or...program at all.
Your family comes first, anything else is if you have time. Take your time, follow YOUR schedule and that's it. Thank you for what you've done so far.
And congratulations on the baby. I also have a little girl and, honestly, of course it's hard work - but it's the most fun I've ever had in my life.
Big hug from Brazil.
I think you're not stupid and I believe you could study code and learn how to romhacks I believe you can my friend. It's a process my friend ❤ one day my man when you release your game I'll be your day 1 fan
@@Criticmasterz I mean you're not basing that on anything. He could be stupid, and you might be giving someone false hope.
@Zaurthur Understandable, but I think someone should give it a try or if he's passionate, get a group of homies to learn code with him and make it a bro moment. Even if he can't do it alone, you can get a group of ppl to help him.
@@Criticmasterz passion is good if you can keep it up. Hard to fail at something you have semi-infinite trys at.
@Zaurthur ofc giving the old college try is better than doing nothing
Kaze, can't wait. I've been here for a long time and I had no idea there were people watching your channel that didn't know about your life's work lol. Congrats on becoming a dad! It's awesome right?
Where N64 Mario Sunshine?
babe wake up new kaze emanuar upload.
No! Don't wake the baby! They just got it to sleep so Kaze could spend some time programming!

The "@dipshit" comment made me laugh so hard. @Kaze, you are seriously amazing. I'm not exaggerating when I say that you doing the work of not just making this game, but sharing in such colorful detail your advancements and insights, is a gift to millions of people. Thank you.
New Father!! Conglatulations!!! God Bless your Family
Amen!
4:46 An additional 10% performance increase would mean 6 fps more. So we would never drop below 30 fps in detail-rich areas. Excellent! Even more so considering the infinite drawing distance!
I also wonder if the future GPT-5 will bring further optimizations.
Congrats for the baby and the job!
I would absolutely love a whole video on F3DEX3
honestly I could just listen to kaze explain anything for like 10+ hours
me too
So would I
sauren has some, and hackern64/f3dex3 has docs you can read
love the polish on the low poly restrictions. i mapped for cs 1.6 and working within limitations are the best end product.
I feel like your Return to Yoshi's Island game will be released in the next decade because of how much amazing progress you've made unlike other game companies who release unfinished products with a $70 price.
Really looking forward to your further developments!
Ignore the haters. If you like doing it then do it. I love seeing you improve old programming and show how much we've advanced in 25 years.
This scene 8:35 its running on N64, but you didnt notice it.
you're an absolute madman and perfectionist, and i fucking love it
Just make sure you're not getting hit by a bus 😅
btw i hope you will make a cartridge (empty, for legal reasons) + cardboard package that we could buy from you for 50-75 CAD $ to encourage your work and then get the rom "for free" so that you wouldnt get sued by nintendo and yet we could contribute. just an idea 😉
This is actually the reason he’s going to make his own original game after he finishes this.
Pretty sure he has merch that you can use rather than this ethically dubious method
dude, I am always in serious awe about your work on the N64. block off the haters because know that me as a viewer, I don't care when you release the game, as long as you keep finding new optimizations, that is always what I look forward to, not necesesarily the final game. zone out from the desperate negative idiots, I love your optimization finding videos
I got to know you from last impact, you really are amazing with your dedication and perseverance ❤
lets hope nintendo wont wip out its lawyers and be like, "nuhuhu, no fan projects on long abandoned systems and games"
Kaze even your informational videos and updates on why things are taking a minute are higher quality than most other garbage on UA-cam. You rock dude, and the stuff you create leaves a lasting impression on people. I hope your project wraps up exactly how you want it to.
Version 1.1? With all the improvements, it might as well be a version 2.0 (esp. if you take the international and Shindō Pak versions into consideration) :P
I think what you do with the youtube channel is great. I like avoiding too much spoiler content, since I plan to play the game when it is done. And I like the time you are putting into it, and I like that the game is your focus and not the channel. Can't wait till it is done, but do not want it to be rushed, keep up the good work Kaze!
“Get a life” WTF??
This is my favorite game of all time getting turned into a PC PORT AHH on the original console!! I cannot wait for Yoshi’s Island 64, even if it’s been 2 years lol
They should get a life instead of pestering the most awesome guy on the other side of the planet (I’m in America)
@@henstudios_official6498 I thought Kaze lives in America too…
At this point I'm pretty sure someone could port an early PS2 like kingdom hearts 1 to the N64 without loosing too much. Specially something like Re: Chain of memories, which has really simple level geometry. The work Kaze has done on this engine is AMAZING
Remade Mario looks tiny running around lol. Might just be a camera thing. But I’m excited! Your work has always been brilliant
ich liebe diese Videos einfach. Lerne dabei so viel und spannend zu sehen wie sich alles über die Jahre entwickelt hat ist einfach großartig. Kann es kaum erwarten dein eigenes spiel zu spielen :D Gott das wird großartig!
mario 64 is going to be running at 128 fps on snes hardware before kaze is done!
wooohooo, congratz on the human larva!!
Vanilla sm64 running at 480p 60FPS is the ultimate goal.
Do not announce a release, Nintendo will stop you at that point.
Edit: Also congratulations on the baby too.
People asking about "When will it be done!?" have clearly not been exposed to the long tail of game development before. It is like most Nintendo games, you see it YEARS in advance of it actually coming out. Eventually you just go "Cool, it is done when it is done! Best of luck to the devs!".
other question: alot of n64 games support resolutions higher than 240p (usually with the expansion pak) do you plan on doing this? if not, why?
I asked almost the same a few videos back, going higher means more pixels to fill, and this game will be fill rate limited so no way, most N64 games are 240p anyway
Appreciate your effort and dedication towards the lil plumber.
I'm eager to play, but will wait for it to be done.
first of all congrats on starting a family i hope nothing but the best for you and your family, and we are hyped for the release of the game please do take your time in polishing the game and ignore these people who demand things without giving anything in return, you are doing a huge work for the SM64 community and also for the speedrun community since im sure by now they finished everything about SM64 so for them to have a new game with the same physics as SM64 is beyond amazing and exciting, hope the best for you my man and take care of yourself and your family.
peace!
Super Mario 64 is my favourite game of all time. I especially love its rom hacking community,Which is why i love watching your videos even if 99% of the time I understand nothing
At this point it sounds like you've ship of Theseused Mario 64 into a completely different engine.
Yes. Yes he did
Congratulations on the job and the family. I look forward to enjoying your work whenever it finally does come out! I've held my breath over much longer shots before, hahaha.
I really should work on my game engine more....
do it. do it now! or after you get your chores done. but then do it.
Do it now homie we'll support you
Lil baby deadass looks like Kaze.
Mini Kaze gon b doing PS3 Cell optimisations and get ray tracing to work on it.
If Mario have jiggle physics, it means that we can put boob physics?
No
Yes, maybe
That's the Half-Life style
Yes, but that is not as epic as the nose.
Since i last tested and worked with the engine in march-april on both "That time i became friends with.." and "Star Road Retooled" i got used to the way mario moves, it is a far smoother and more seamless experience. Hopefully the expanded and revisualized Super Mario Odyssey 64 will showcase all of the wonderful work youve done on the engine!
5:40 normal mapping doesn't make much sense if you don't have dynamic lighting. Simply moving the camera doesn't show the effect.
it's also got reflections depending on the normal vector which do change as your viewing angle changes
I Love this! Well done. It's wonderful to see what the old N64 could do!

I found the editing in this video really well done! Was it done by you? Looking forward to the future of this project!!
ocaio is editing all my stuff nowadays
until nintendos legal seal team six nukes this project and puts you into developer prison
This video was awesome. It was nice seeing your past projects some were definitely a throw back. I think I remember you saying a few months back that you had a demo planned, but I feel like it would be well worth the time if I waited for a a finalized release. Also congrats on being a dad! It's amazing to see how far you've come!
Dude, I’m so glad there are people like you who take on projects like this. I absolutely love Super Mario 64 and am super excited about community projects like yours. I’ll definitely play it when it’s released. Take as much time as you need, don’t feel pressured, and make the best out of it. Even if Nintendo issues a strike or something similar, I’m sure the community will keep your project alive and appreciate it for a long time to come. I’m writing this because I know these kinds of projects often get far too little recognition, and I want you to know that there are people who truly value what you’re doing.
The wood panel and tube, excellent
I’m always shocked by the quality of this, incredible work- really looking forward to it.
Take your time no need to rush.
Been following your content for years and it’s actually really fun and comforting to just listen to you yap about math stuff that I slept on in high school and college. I don’t know if there’s anyone else out there making content that way lol
Keep going, take your time and congrats on becoming a dad!
i feel so much warmth in my heart just having existed in the same world as someone like you. you are a treasure and a champion and i hope you and your family are living life well
looking forward to your next code optimizations video!! Hearing about the improvements you find is always so cool, and it's mindboggling to hear you say that you're not memory bottle-necked anymore!! How? how. how, even
Kaze you are the GOAT. As i get older I've been getting more patient in terms of waiting for things to come out. As an example, i used to crave more N64 Zelda romhacks, but in the past couple years there have almost been too many for me to keep up with. In the case of your games I'm perfectly content with waiting for something incredible to release.
Dude, I subbed to you to follow what you've been doing with Mario 64. I remain subbed to you to see what you've been doing with it. I might not understand much of this, but it's fascinating all the same.
Congrats on becoming a dad! I’m super excited about the eventual launch. Wishing you all the best and hoping you crush it without any stress.
I was also wondering if it’ll be possible to create new N64 games using the engine you’re developing?
Congrats on the little one! ❤
Can't wait to get to see where your endeavors lead you. Awesome work man!
