Super Mario Party sold almost twice as much than DS did and got better reception at launch than what this game got. Just throwing that out there for anyone who thinks the title is a no-brainer.
It is kinda sucky but like you said not only did DS come out very late in it’s life span, but Super Mario Party was the closest thing to a return to form for Mario Party for the longest time after many bad games and also only came out a year after the Switch came out so it had way more time to breathe. It was just bad timing all around on DS’s part, but I’m happy people are actually praising it again lately
SPM really didn't deserve it, and recently I've seen a resurgence of criticism towards this game centered on how bad the boards were and how horribly balanced was. I've always felt the boards were minuscule, had little to no personality (as is the UI), little going on at all, and the coin balancing was absolutely stupid; 10 coins for a star, 10 coins for a star pipe, and everyone can gain coins in regular minigames now? What??? It has good mini-games, but even Mario Party 10 has good mini-games, and Top 100 too, that hardly really counts if the mini-games are contextualised on bad boards or bad game modes. Reviews propelled the game's score due to a drought and hyped it from there, rather than from its genuine quality. It's similar to a few 3DS games that were released when the console wasn't doing so hot (cough cough Fire Emblem Awakening cough cough).

Because Bowser has shrunk you down you play on boards that are mostly everyday rooms or locations, but small, and to accompany this almost all the minigames take place in this space as well. Riding a clothing hanger, slicing a cucumber, running on a meat spit, the theming is so consistent and really makes the whole game have a lovely homey aesthetic. I wish more mario parties did this.

With family members at family reunions, with my sister while we were selling garden vegetables at the end of the Laneway. Legendary games, bro.
Edit: the ending of your video made me tear up
Can we all agree that Toadette's Music Room is the best board in the game?
Debatable. I prefer bowser's pinball machine
Nostalgia just hit me like a semi-truck seeing the boards and minigames
This is my first Mario Party so therefore is perfect
There is a way to grind party points which is to play max turns on DK Stone Statue and save scumming by staying in last till the Final 5 Frenzy to get stars for 5 coins while having lots of coins as having enough could let you possibly get max stars. That lets you get lots of points.
8:12 I’d argue that people actually prefer playing AGAINST DK as a CPU for… reasons…
Hard DK ?
Nothing was more legendary than getting 'stars for 5 coins' from bowser on DK Stone statue and having a mad dash to the star space to get sometimes upwards of 10 to 20 stars
Nah nah nah, This isn't just the best handheld Marioparty, this IS THE BEST *MARIOPARTY*
_in my opinion_
Super Mario Party is sorta overrated
@@pinguthepenguin9296 that’s bcuz super Mario party sucks
In my opinion In my opinion in my opinion
OMG. I can't believe you left out the 2 player games, Pen Pals and Desert Duel! It's so cool to me that they included separate games only playable for specifically 2 person play sessions, really shows how much polish went into this game.
Why not do the whole “Mario Party” retrospective?
Mp ds was literally a big part of my childhood, it's something I will never forget. Might just probably get a 3ds in order to relive it again.
Wasn't expecting him to make this video, but I'm so happy he did damn. Also MP6 is the best one. I love the Tiny theme too about this game. Best single player mode as well
Got this game in a lot I bought at a flea market once and I never expected it to be so awesome!
A solid number of good and fun boards, a great number of entertaining and fun mini games and EVERYTHING is based on the plot that the characters got shrinked. Amazing!
Also I was able to play it regularly with friends and flatmates with just my single cardridge.
Everyone saying this is _obviously_ the best handheld mario party but honestly I think star rush is really good
Nah
Yeah it is. If only it had actually interesting boards for it's "classic party" mode and it would have been great.
@@miwestraveler3986 that's y it's bad. A mario party is good cos of 3 things: mechanics, boards and minigames. Star rush fails at the 1st 2. It's like me saying if paper mario sticker star didnt have its flaws, it would be the best paper mario game
@@mikayel6175
1 : some of Super Rush's mechanics and boards (mainly Toad's Scramble) are far, FAR from being failures. I'm saying if all modes were as good, it would have been a great overall game
2 : no one said Super Rush would have been the best
3 : Sticker Star would have been a great game if some of it's flaws were adressed, and it's definitely not a bad game as it is.
travelers don't agree with u on either but let's just agree to disagree
19:51 made me laugh. It’s something Bowser should’ve done, but be a 0.01% chance to happen.
This title is impressive until you remember it's competition doesn't even have multiplayer
What about Super Mario Party on the Nintendo Switch?
All the 3DS ones do
I just realised this is the only traditional mario party portable game
@@majesticmo5048 what about all Super Mario Party on the switch
@@VexKingUA-cam I meant to say handheld in which the switch is more of a console
thank you for making this video, Mario Party DS wasn't a very big part of my childhood but I do have many fond memories of it. I'm glad to see it get the recognition it deservers.
Not to brag or anything, but I'm pretty much a god in the mic games.
My lungs are in pain
FINALLY, someone recognises Mario Party DS for the great game that it is! I still play it today and it's one of my favourite DS games alongside Mario Kart. Super underrated and should really be talked about more. The boards were super creative since the characters were shrunk down, the bosses were fun and the mini games are mostly very fun (at least for me), as well as the extra modes, puzzles, etc.
"Why Mario Party DS is the best handheld Mario Party"
The answer: cause literally every other handheld Mario party was hot garbage
This game was my first DS game. I actually got it months before my DSi, on my birthday, cos the shipping on my DSi was delayed cos of issues. I loved the game so much. It was and still is my favourite Mario Party, slightly fuelled by nostalgia.
That is like, the most dry take I have ever seen in a UA-cam title. I don't think I've ever met anyone who even likes any of the other handheld Mario Party games, let alone thinks they're the best.
A LOT of people like Super. It sold nearly double the units DS sold in fact.
@@silokhawk Oh, Super is technically handheld. I forget about that.
@@silokhawk DO they, though? I always thought people HATED Super.
I loved MP DS. It was all me and my sisters would play when we were kids
this was my first mario party and first ds game, the game always is gonna hold a special place in my heart
Forgot that I used to play this game. Thanks for the nostalgia trip.
I remember playing this game at the playground loved it.
Just wanna say; Loved this video Silok, I'm not really into Mario Party that much but I still love hearing you talk about it.
I just found this channel and I’m freakin mind blown by how good this vid is. I loved Mario party Dd as a kid haha. Definitely gonna watch all the other videos now
Now I kind of wish I hadn't sold my copy a long time ago.
Enjoyed the video, Silok. There's something very cozy about your channel, especially these videos looking back at Nintendo games from the 2000s and 2010s.
Mario Party DS was the only Mario Party I have played and is by far my favourite DS Game. My sister and I used to play it for hours and not get bored and the game was a big part of my childhood. It's nice to see that also many others also played this game and shared the same childhood memories with this game
I remember my cousins had this game and i played it once with them, it probably was my greatest gaming experience of my life, just messing around in the back of the car.
I've played this game so much, I managed to even max out my MP Points and unlock everything after 12 years
My god this brings me back to when I would go for roadtrips I'd be sitting in the back seat and 1v1 my brother beside me
i played through this game to 100% complete it as a favor for my friend jerry in daycare. it did indeed take me a week! i didnt get to play it anymore after that, but it was one of the highlights of my time at almost home learning center.
holy crap the amount of nostalgia i got from looking at the game boards and minigames again. i remember playing those mic games in public lmfao
I got this game with my 3DS, it’s my favourite game on there, I’ve played it so much that I have all of the badges, I’m really glad someone made a video like this.
As someone who got my DS in 2008 this had been the perfect game for me. I loved playing this game. I still remember the excitements and frustrations at trying to beat some of the bosses. For some reason the first boss had always been the hardest for me, because it was difficult for me to aim and blow into the mic at the same time... (only now years later do I know there's a button to press instead) 😅
But then BOWSER OH BOY. Many hours were spent on that one.
