@Rhea Most items you can't use have the same affect as the shells, so it's not a big deal at the end of the day. Even then, the rubber band AI in Super isn't nearly as bad as in 64.
True, the rubber band isn't as bad in Super : it's worse. The AI is programmed to do a specific time. No matter how much you hit them, they will rubberband like crazy to get back in line. The only way an AI wont make it's time is if it gets hit right before the end. It's so ridiculous, you're basically not competing in a race, you're doing a time trial with invincible moving obstacles that try to screw you over.
I am SO glad you talked about the battle mode and how it's last man standing. I've always loved that about Mario Kart DS battle mode and it's why I often find myself coming back to the game.
No, just affects your drifting. Doesn't up your speed. If you remember the stormcloud item from MK Wii, that one did raise your speed, to aid in the hot-potato aspect. You also didn't slowdown while offroading.
That was me. If I was splatted by a blooper I just looked at the bottom screen. Bloopers didn't have much purpose in Mario Kart DS because you could just look at the bottom screen.
@@wyattschuette1737 Yeah, if you ask me, they should have made the Blooper cover the screen so much you would have to use the touch screen to see. Since Nintendo loved using the touchscreen in DS games so much and all.
i just noticed: the red shell that took all his bananas away? It actually hit the fist banana behind him, making the other ones go away either way, thats still pretty skill/luck based
@@Mcnibbus actually no, what happened there was that the red shell took out the first banana, and as a ladder effect the 2 others got dropped. But to something like that to happen is very rare.
@@Mcnibbus It isn't a mechanic. In MKDS red shells are coded to target the player's back HALF rather than the direct CENTER of the player's back. This causes them to do "sick drifts" around held items more often then you'd think. what happened there was the red shell swerved around the first 2 bananas in the stack but hit the 3rd (the one closest to the car). As he shows later in the video, red shells will often completely ignore held items and hit you. This mostly happens when turning corners or when drifting, as the held items go far off-center when doing these actions, giving the shell a massive radius to hit the player.
Mines on the ds these years, it may be difficult to pull and you had to master it so well and it takes mad skill to pull it off. Once you master it you will become this good in this game
[VenomousSnake37] i say that to keep a lighthearted tone, especially because you can’t hear how i’m saying it. if I were to be straightforward and say “you’re wrong, because it actually started in super circuit”, it would come across as negative, and i want to be as positive as possible.

I was a game reviewer back in the day and I got my hands on this game like a full month before it officially hit store and I remember what hell it was trying to get online. I basically had to walk the streets for an hour before I found a Wi-Fi connection I could leech onto xD and it was right next to a crossroad so I would just stand right there for like another solid hour and the only people I could play against was of course mostly Japanese people who already had the game before us xD Good times Seriously though, bring back Mission Mode already, Nintendo
Good lord that unlocked memories that were sealed away 💀💀 I remember convincing my mom to take me to Wendy's/Mcdonald's not for the food, but the free wifi! This was way before everybody and their grandma had hotspots around every corner
After watching this I looked at my DSI and found the last game I played on that was MKDS, and that was 5 years ago. So OF COURSE I went and played for 2 hours straight. It's a good as hell game.
6:50 I would like to object here. I’ve played this game so damn much as a kid, and still do, but the one thing I remember about these three bananas is that it depends on the angle they are hit on. If they are hit on an angle they will all be gone. If they are hit straight on, only one will be used, this angle problem is also confirmed by yourself right after, as you explain that a red shell can still hit you even if you have a banana behind you. Even with this mistake this is a great video on this amazing game. MkDS needed more attention. And this video give it what it deserves
I’m so glad someone else picked up on this as-well, it was annoying me he misunderstood what happened during that interaction. As for the red shell behaviour, the red shells always follow the centre of the track, so if your on the outside of the track the red shell may attack you at to shallow of an angle depending on your position, and not hit you from behind. If your close to an opponent and are facing at a 45 degree angle from them, you can manipulate the red shell to loop around and attack from the front; great for dealing with opponents protecting themselves with items.
17:29 "Next thing you knew, there were 5 of us playing Mario Kart battle play of demo mode" that lowkey made me tear up realizing all the fun memories of elementary school and how I met some friends that way
I love Mario Kart DS to death. Maybe it’s just me and my expectations at the time, but I thought it was seriously ahead of its time. Since you could race online, mission modes, etc. With that being said however, I still prefer Mario Kart Wii. The bikes took the series to a whole nother level, and they really helped feed that desire to go fast with all its tricks that couldn’t be done with karts. And that’s only scratching the surface. I wish they had never gotten rid of online for it... Can I please see my family again SilokHawk?
Wagsternator Memez I know. I just want my parents back. SilokHawk is holding them hostage, I don’t know their location, there’s nothing the police can do. It’s not fair
@@djdeadbeat4380 Arcade GP 2 is better Just kidding, lol...or am I? For real though, the Arcade game are fun if you never played them, better than Mario Kart Wii? Probably not but they are still a great time!
As someone that has traded Mario Kart DS for Mario Kart Wii, I'm gonna have to disagree. IMO, bikes are broken to the point where there's no reason to use a kart. Also getting three stars in every cup is damn near impossible because the game is super unfair with it's requirements. There was one time where I met all the requirements for a three star, and the game STILL didn't give it to me.
When I was in middle school everyone at my school had a ds and only one guy had mariokart ds he game shared and wanted everyone to play it. we only played when the bus drove us to school and home. I wish I can go back in time to play it again with my friends again and those people in the bus
@Gook I know. “8-player schoolbus Mariokart Download Play” is sadly going to become a term that the latter half of Gen Z will never truly understand. 😢
God I remember playing the DS when I was a little kid, trying to 100% the entire game with 3 stars on everything, beating the in-game japanese highest records, and then at midnight watching that lil' scene at the end of the cups, god so many old memories of finally being able to beat mario kart on the DS, I really wish they had brought something like that back, maybe like "Mario Kart Grand Prix" with everything back... Only one man can wish such old and new features to return in a new installment...
I really wish I still had my Mario kart for DS, if only who ever stole it never did I probably would be still playing it right now all these years later.
1:21 This was the 1st game I've played in my LIFE. I loved this game. I definitely didn't break my DS 4 times... Snapped it in half. Put Pringles in the cartridge slot hoping for a Pringles game... I was 3, Ok.
It also was my first game. It was in my summer holiday with my whole family (almost) I don't know how old I was. But me and my twin played the game on my aunts DS I love this game. Best Mario Kart for me
8:49 Agree, it's a beautiful track (and it still looks great) with fantastic loop-de-loop parts and a wonderful song. Plus, it's a more interesting Rainbow Road then the original from Super Mario Kart.
The reason you couldnt get wifi to work might be because the DS dosnt support WPA or WPA2. You need to set up a router using WEP. Make sure you turn it off right after because its super insucure.
Setting up online with MKDS is such a pain. I got it to work once, but setting up a router with wep is difficult, since most routers don't really use it. I had to get a virtual machine with windows xp, and get the ds wifi connector. It works, but it's such a pain regardless.
Since when was there a tank and an excavation crane in this game?? R.O.B.'s here too?? A 7th Mission category?? Honestly, that's how you know you got a good game, when you blew a good 30% of your childhood mastering battle mode without ever getting to the unlockable stuff and had a blast doing so.
1:03 Technically missions did return. They're in Mario Kart Tour. 6:06 Mega mushroom came back in Mario Kart Tour as well. 11:07 Mario Kart: Super Circuit had retro tracks.
@Blazeit Barry This video was uploaded on October 4th while Mario Kart Tour released over a week before that. He could've just changed his script a tiny bit. It's fine though...
@@ElectroBlastLuigi he did mention Tour at the end of the video, not in specific reference to the missions, but in general that it changed some things. I assume he'd already mostly finished.
Fun fact: Mario Kart Wii was planned to have a Mission mode, but they scrapped it to make the online challenge mode that I think had one or two missions every week, with a single boss fight that appeared three times throughout the online mode's existence. Kind-of wished I knew that sooner, as I barely used the online mode in Mario Kart Wii.
@@paulgilbert5278 Kinda... The whole thing worked really well, but there were too many elite players, so I never really bothered. But had I known about the Mario Galaxy boss battle sooner, I would've only played online just to fight it.
6:56 actually the red hit the banana holding the others back so the others broke off
5 років тому+6
Yeah, this is a common thing, since red shells are following you strictly and since Silok was turning around a corner, the shell went to hit whatever was strictly behind him, making all the other bananas go away.
Blue shells in DS and items in general if i remember correctly depend on place and distance so if your overlapped by first or something your more likely to get lightnings and blue shells and stuff, if your in first you get shells and bananas, so it makes it hard af to get a 3 star on a race since if your too far away there will be more blue shells and lightnings
Personally, this was 1 of my favorites. I also loved the HELL out of waluigi pinball, & agree with some of the errors with the design that they made that you mentioned. Great video, as always.
One of my fondest gaming memories was a thing called "Toy Day" at Primary School. This must've been around Year 5, or 10 years old, and pretty much everyone brought their Nintendo DS's in - it was the height of the original handheld boom. So, we did a massive 20 person Mario Kart DS Tournament using Download play, having like a tournament tree and everything. I remember winning one of them, but we ran multiple that day. It was the great equaliser - it didn't matter who you were that day - all that mattered is that you were playing Mario Kart - in a weird way it brought our class a little bit closer.
I remember I went over to my friends house, I played mario kart ds and the next my mum got me a birthday cake based on the ds battle mini game stage. I was pretty hype
Thomas Plenty of people do, especially when they don’t have other people over. There’s no valid excuse to not make a game better by not including more substantial single player content
I remember when this game was THE game to get. I still enjoy it time to time, I really like the controls and how it handles. I'm also still really good with the balloon battles.
1:59 I have a potential theory why ROB (HVC-012) was included in MKDS. ROB was released in Japan (as HVC-012) in July 1985. It was also sold at the NYC test launch of the NES in October 1985. Mario Kart DS was released in 2005, which not many people notice was 20 years since the release of ROB. I guess Nintendo wanted to celebrate, just like they did with the 20th Anniversary of Super Mario Bros?
There needs to be a Mario kart ultimate we’re you have to unlocked every character and there’s every course and every battle course and have a dlc that adds more courses and characters
18:13 modern wifi uses WPA encryption, DS only supports WEP if I'm not mistaken. You can change it in your router but be aware WEP is very easy to hack
Blue shells could be avoided by releasing a drift boost while jumping with a perfect timing, right when the shell was amorcing its final dive in order to hit you. It required a lot of skill to be able to perform this technic almost each time but that’s the difference between a three stars and a one stars player ;)
Shroom Ridge was one of my favorite courses back then, and it's real easy for everyone to forget that course. Heck, I even forgot it existed until the video.
6:31 I know this is an old video, but in Mario Kart 8 (and Deluxe) the Blooper ink does make your kart slightly more slippery to drive, but it's not incredibly significant. It's just like driving on icy surfaces.
I saw a used copy of the game in a store a couple years ago and bought that, and have been having so much fun playing one of my favorite childhood games. Even if as a kid it was Wii that my friends (and maybe me at certain points in my childhood because when Wii came out it was the cool new game) would want to play that instead of DS, I absolutely love now how technical DS can be. It has great drift mechanics. I’m definitely going to have to check out the fan servers soon.
Once I was trying to tell someone at school about DS games because they had never had a DS growing up, the next day when we were at lunch they started ranting about how bad the graphics were and me and my friends were just staring at them wondering if they knew the DS was released all the way back in 2003.
I remember not getting to experience much of Mission Mode because I didn't know how to drift as a small kid and didn't have the internet. I never made it past "World" 1.
5:20 No, snaking isnt slightly faster. Its nearly double the speed if done perfectly. Time Trial runs are insane. Ive been trying to beat Yoshi's Falls(MKDasher has the record), but Im off by literally 8 seconds. Like damn thats alot to work on lol.
i love ds so much, my family had competitions everytime we met back in the day, and i feel like we explored every part of the game, like one time we found out you could avoid a blue shell by drifting and jumping at the right time. such a good game

"There isn't a stupid amount of Rubber banding as there is in Wii"
*Laughs in Mario Kart 64*
Yeah I played that game and I love Wii's but damn 64 has some bad issues with rubber banding
In 64 every cc felt like 150cc 😂
Definitely SNES mario kart is the worst. The NPCS literally get items you can't use. They can just do that;.
@Rhea
Most items you can't use have the same affect as the shells, so it's not a big deal at the end of the day.

Scott’s been doing Mario Kart videos. It’s a whole series, as far as I know
I am SO glad you talked about the battle mode and how it's last man standing. I've always loved that about Mario Kart DS battle mode and it's why I often find myself coming back to the game.
6:34 Actually, thats a side effect of the Blooper in MK8, granted it's only really noticable when you drift, but it's there.
Yeah, it is. Seems like Hawk hasn't played enough Mario kart 8 deluxe.
I heard about this recently.
Apparently you go slightly faster if you’ve been hit by Bloopers.
No, just affects your drifting. Doesn't up your speed.
If you remember the stormcloud item from MK Wii, that one did raise your speed, to aid in the hot-potato aspect. You also didn't slowdown while offroading.
I remember the Blooper increasing your speed in DS as well
I somehow never noticed that in 8!
7:50 and I've even played enough to 3 star everything!
Am I the only one that played looking at the bottom screen most of the time? Especially when bloopers got used
Or to see what objects the other one's had. It was really useful.
I remember trying to beat a race looking only at the bottom screen.
I failed... ._.
Nope. That skill really helps me now in MK8DX

@@Mcnibbus actually no, what happened there was that the red shell took out the first banana, and as a ladder effect the 2 others got dropped.
But to something like that to happen is very rare.
Cesar Castillo happens to me when I play ds all the time and I’m pretty sure he said it was a mechanic of the game
@@Mcnibbus it happens but rarely, not always.

I would like to object here.
And, strategic use, like dropping one before it gets to you can help a lot.
There are also Wiimmifii servers for Mario Kart Wii, just like DS. So if you still wanted to play online you technically could.
