I've heard from several people that Danny is one of the most friendly people in the music business. Everyone I know from the industry that's met him says he's incredibly humble and has no problem talking to fans for extended periods of time. Makes me like him even more.
"I used to run Maynard in to get crickets for his gecko. He didn't have a car then. We just became good friends." The universe smiled upon humanity at that moment.
Was just talking to a friend of mine about the last 10 years of my life. Married. Divorced. Son diagnosed with cancer. 2 year battle that he won. Moved from PA to CO and VA. Back to PA. Recorded multiple albums for artists. Stopped playing drums. Started playing drums again. Celebrated my 31st and 41st birthdays. Still no Tool album. Haha!! What a ride.
***** thanks for the kind words. Yes, my son (now 21) is amazing. Definitely my hero. I'm from the Pittsburgh area. Audio engineer? Not really. I worked in a recording studio in Colorado as a session drummer and did a little bit of engineering but it was more of the placing mics and the outboard stuff. Never really had my hands on the desk. My Dad has his own studio here and we record stuff for friends and our own projects but it's not really a public studio per se. How's the music scene where you are?
If you're looking for sessions, you may be able to find a smaller studio closer. Sometimes hard to find but they're out there. Because in this day and age, you really don't need to live in one of the Big 4 cities. You can record the parts and send them to whatever studio. When I was in Colorado, the studio I worked for did tracks for an artist but she wanted it mixed and mastered in Dallas. So we did basically what was a 4 song EP and sent everything in an email. Crazy. Because then, you get home a little easier and get to spend time with your son. And believe me... that time goes like lightning. I swear mine was just 5 years old and now he's 21. Best of luck!
Danny Carey is also nice as HELL. I live in a college town in KS and was staggered to see him just hanging out at the bar during a Skinny Puppy show. I walked up and said hi. Personable as can be!
@captain_ahab No we went to the UMKC Conservatory of Music. He has just always been a huge Jayhawks fan. I seem to recall him having a Danny Manning jersey at one time back in the 80's.
Marc Hatton You’re right, he’s talking about 7empest. But technically Adam’s 4 minute lead is also in 7. Three rounds of 7=21. Don’t know why these guys count the way they do. It’s insane.
@@w_stew8912 You can count it in whatever way you're comfortable, but Adam counts it in 21, he counts the whole riff cycle which is composed of 21/16, but you can also count it as three rounds of 7/16 as you said. Whatever makes it easier is right.
He's probably talking about 7empest, but don't be surprised, there's an audio track from 2007 where Adam plays the intro to Invincible, and one of 7empest's riffs is from before Justin joined the band.
3:37 Justin is feeling it locks eyes with Danny and they are so in the pocket! These guys are the sickest rhythm section ever! Up there with Bonham and JPJ!
Right now, that distinction might belong to Neil Peart. Maybe Danny could take his place? Well shit, that won't work either. Tool without Danny is like Rush without Neil.
3:58 "Once we're in the studio, I usually knock out all my stuff in like 1 or 2 years. And Justin will probably take like 3 years maybe on his bass parts because he uses a lot of different sounds and things. Then Adam might take 4 or 5 years because he does a lot of double tracking, lot of crazy textural stuff. Then we might spend another year or two doing some little percussion overdubs, some synthesizer stuff. The tracking part, I'd say like another 2 to 3 years, then another year to mix and master, and that's it!"
Actually Maynard is the fastest. He pretty much hears the track and immediately starts coming up with his part. He and the rest of the band have stated this several times in interviews and such.
@T RopE Not entirely true, Most session musicians I would say, take any session musician, bassist, drummer, guitarist or whatever and they'll get the job done quick
Danny is a drum God! So many good or drummers have come and gone and plenty are still killing it... But Danny will no doubt be considered one of the greatest! Seen him live 3 times and would never pass up a chance for a 4th!! 🤘🤘 #DrumGod
rastabg23 There are plenty of good drummers around today. Carey is just one of them. I think his parts are great with tool (for example he has a great taste and doesn't over play with tons of fills). I think his playing is not strong enough with Volto (cause I have in mind all fusion drummers alive today), but that I think is a fun project for him, trying to emulate all those 70's style he loves so much.

yeah. I think the same: the best as "I like him better than this one" is subjective. But since I've studied drums I endlessly listened to a few drummers out there. Certainly I like him more than portnoy (but this is a no-brainer ahah). My judgement was more about his technique and the style. He plays a lot of good stuff in this video but as you can see they put up the tool stuff and no solos or original stuff as for the other videos in the series from vic firth.
I know what you mean. But its really strange to know that here from wikipedia ''Carey has laid claim to various drumming techniques that use sacred geometric figures such as the unicursal hexagram. Tauno Kekkonen - No...a 13 year old kid covered his music... you can’t replace danny as an artist... Now stop being a dick and just admit you love the Lakers

That's because Maynard leaves them all to their own to do all the instrumental stuff. They then send him the finished records and he writes the lyrics and the vocal melody on his own. His contribution has always been the last to their work. I recomend you check out this podcast Danny did a couple of days before the latest album's release. He went more in-depth how their process works and it boiled down to it that once they were finally done after years of working on their respective instruments and melodys they all sent Maynard the tapes with "Finished" written on it so he could finally get his stuff on it and the record be completed.
the best thing in this interview is when he says in may 2012 they would start tracking in the studio while a few weeks ago they said only one track is complete from writing point of view!!! this means the album is soon coming out!
MLD i think the lawsuit doesn't apply to their being late. they said to have completed just one song. the lawsuit is back as 2006 and I can't see why is taking them time out of their schedule(lawyers should do the work). I think two things: they have already wrote the material years ago and they are not satified with it (or mjk isn't) or they have been lazy (or struggling to get something valuable).
Some people understand rhythm some people believe ego is all that they need.... Danny Carey is by far the best progressive rhythm interpretation of our time..... and I for one am grateful to existed when he did ....as I'm grateful to have existed at all.....
I'm 56 and have been to a shitload of concerts. I saw TOOL a few years ago, broke my leg that day but went anyway. Ended up in a killer seat, no one to fuck with me, just me and TOOL. Danny gave me the only drum solo I've ever really enjoyed. I usually take a piss, but not this time. I spent the time trying to pull my jaw off the floor I was so amazed. As a 46 year musician I appreciate a band that can pull off their shit live and this was the case. like a giant set of headphones! Truly amazing.
in '92 at a club in omaha, ne...tool was opening for the rollins band the show was sold out, i walked up to danny because of his laminate badge it had the opiate e.p. cover on it i had no idea he was the drummer. i asked him if he was in the tool? lol....he was super cool and got me and a friend of mine in the show on their guest list....seeing tool in a club was an amazing experience of course seeing tool shows after that was civic centers and arena's
+avaris1280 they don't really write the albums together. Maynard doesn't come up with lyrics or melody until the songs are basically written and recorded. That's when his creative process begins, so it's like an echo of the years of preparation that the instrumentalists of the band have already gone through. They create the songs, and then Maynard listens to everything and comes in with his parts to complement the rest of the sound. That's why he is such an amazing lead singer and sounds so great with the band
Seen a perfect circle at a small venue in Calgary Canada, in 2004 Didn't know till after Danny was drumming for the opening band a pigmy love circus. Danny was in the lobby signing shirts. Got to shake his hand being a drummer this was a highlight.
He was a monster in college. His technique has always been flawless. That's when it all started coming together. He got exposed to all kinds of heavyweights. I remember sitting with him at a Simon Phillips clinic and PASIC in 83 and watching the arrows Simon was shooting strike home with Danny. That and King Crimson Discipline. That also hugely affected him.
I am not a musician. I love and acknowledge the greatness of Bonham, Moon and Peart, etc. I more personally love Bruford, Mastelotto and Harrison (KC). But to my untrained ears, this fukin guy is the most precise, musical and innovative drummer of all time. His sound is so clean it never ceases to amaze me
Has to be the best or one of the best drummers I have ever heard, I was listening to them when tools first album came out when I was in high school. I still listen to them, it is amazing how he changes tempo and timing so effortlessly. He is a absolute beast behind that kit!
Fear Inoculum really opened my eyes/ears/mind to Danny and his playing. I hadn't been indifferent to his playing on the previous albums, but his work on the new album really grabbed me and so the reason I'm here.
Haha, coming back here in 2019 is funny, he was talking about Fear Inoculum way back in 2012, saying they'd be tracking by June. Lol.
they probably stopped "all getting together and really grind it out" 2 hours after this interview lol! 7 years later they release the album
Justin said they'd scrapped lots of material.
Yeah they must have scraped stuff or else the new album is already so old for them and they haven’t even put it out haha
Imagine the demos!!!

but!
alas, Tool in general are ...not reclusive...but brood on their own abstract, insightful fringe.
I haven't seen Denny running around with Bono saving kittens with confetti for example
imagine if the drummer that gonna replace him have to learn all the drum parts its must be depressing
+haekal nadhil You Can't replace him...just not possible
@@tes420 look up O'Keefe Foundation and their covers of Tool. It takes a 13 year old kid to replace him.
Tauno Kekkonen - No...a 13 year old kid covered his music... you can’t replace danny as an artist...
Now stop being a dick and just admit you love the Lakers
@@tes420 Bulls all the way!
@@taunokekkonen5733 Look up "dumbass statements" and your comment will apply. Unless of course you're being sarcastic, then disregard.
I hope these guys know what they do, takes us to places and make us feel things we can never express is words.
*Q:* How long does it take to make a TOOL album?
*A:* 10,000 Days
Great drummer and great personnality. One of my favorites
-vid from 2012
-"its coming together now im hoping we can get into the studio buy june or july"
-its now nov 2018 and YALL STILL HAVENT GIVEN US THE NEW ALBUM
2019 and it's finally mastered :p
well, congrats fellas
An absolute beast! He is one of the main reasons I LOVE this band!
4:20... Notice how he doesn’t mention Maynard in the album making process!😂
@3:07 we have one in 17. Cant wait to hear it in a few months from 2019
111 thumbs down?? really?? this guy redefined drumming...
Haha, Maynard singing "And a dope slipknot T"
Guybrush Threepwood I know, that was hilarious.
the best thing in this interview is when he says in may 2012 they would start tracking in the studio while a few weeks ago they said only one track is complete from writing point of view!!! this means the album is soon coming out!
It seems the tracking has been delayed because of a lawsuit they're going through so its unlikely we'll get the new album this year.
MLD
i think the lawsuit doesn't apply to their being late. they said to have completed just one song. the lawsuit is back as 2006 and I can't see why is taking them time out of their schedule(lawyers should do the work). I think two things: they have already wrote the material years ago and they are not satified with it (or mjk isn't) or they have been lazy (or struggling to get something valuable).
+desperation mixtape He is referring to 10.000 days. This interview was done in 2006.
desperation mixtape It's 2018 and we still don't have an album.
LOL This comment did not age well
Some people understand rhythm some people believe ego is all that they need.... Danny Carey is by far the best progressive rhythm interpretation of our time..... and I for one am grateful to existed when he did ....as I'm grateful to have existed at all.....
That new album though, hands down to the master
He must have five other ghost arms that can only be seen when you completely transcend to the 5th
Danny has a beautiful mind....and then he blends his creative genius with Justin, Adam and Maynard....OMG...their albums are WORTH the wait!
can anyone get the drum cam footage of this entire set?
My Fav of all time!!!
tool: will you ever play in south america?
Great shirt Danny! I went to Berklee with Scott Kinsey. Love that guy
Friends note they said!!!
How long does it take to record not an album but a
"TOOL ALBUM"!!!!
Loved drumming since I was a kid. Danny Carey is the one who challenged my thinking on drumming.
How long does it take to record a Tool album?
A: 13 years
I want part 7/4
3:56 “how long does it take to record a Tool album...”
Uh... like 13 years ...
Danny is a huge inspiration on my playing.... he is insanely good.
Brian, do you recognise the firt song? at 00:31s.... would you tell me the name?thnx
I thought he had 4 arms ?
Just a beast of a player and a really nice guy. Met him briefly in Chicago years back
How long does it take to make an album...”Oh, my part is 6 days, then the band, so two months...ten years. It takes ten years.”
“Get in the studio in June or July of 2012”.😂
in '92 at a club in omaha, ne...tool was opening for the rollins band the show was sold out, i walked up to danny because of his laminate badge it had the opiate e.p. cover on it i had no idea he was the drummer. i asked him if he was in the tool? lol....he was super cool and got me and a friend of mine in the show on their guest list....seeing tool in a club was an amazing experience of course seeing tool shows after that was civic centers and arena's
He forgot to mention the 3-4 years it takes for Maynard to record vocals...
avaris1280 Well now I've got some a-dvice for you little buddy, before you point the finger you should know that he's the man..
Manas Sharma And if he's the man,
Then i'm the man, and
You're the man as well so you can
Point that fuckin' finger up your ass.
thank you..
That's why he is such an amazing lead singer and sounds so great with the band
it was a joke... i was joking... lmfao
Seen a perfect circle at a small venue in Calgary Canada, in 2004
Didn't know till after Danny was drumming for the opening band a pigmy love circus. Danny was in the lobby signing shirts. Got to shake his hand being a drummer this was a highlight.
Wait, so did he learn how to drum when he met Tool? Or was he already a drummer before?
He was already a drummer before then. He even played for Carole King.
He was born and raised in the small town of Paola, KS where I now live. He began playing drums as a kid.
He drummed for Green Jell-O "little pig little pig let me in"
They changed name to Green Jelly read mjk auto biography I enjoyed it opened my eyes to slot of things I never thought about.
That also hugely affected him.
so glad their first drummer flaked out on them so much. Whoever you are, THANK YOU!
I am not a musician. I love and acknowledge the greatness of Bonham, Moon and Peart, etc. I more personally love Bruford, Mastelotto and Harrison (KC). But to my untrained ears, this fukin guy is the most precise, musical and innovative drummer of all time. His sound is so clean it never ceases to amaze me
I agree
The thing is always amazes me with him is not just that he's so skilled but that he makes it look so effortless
Danny Carey looks like a long-haired not so fucked up Sylvester Stallone.
Has to be the best or one of the best drummers I have ever heard, I was listening to them when tools first album came out when I was in high school. I still listen to them, it is amazing how he changes tempo and timing so effortlessly. He is a absolute beast behind that kit!
"I usually knock out all my stuff in like 6 or 7 days at the most...."
DA FUQ?!
Fear Inoculum really opened my eyes/ears/mind to Danny and his playing. I hadn't been indifferent to his playing on the previous albums, but his work on the new album really grabbed me and so the reason I'm here.
When you cut this dude he bleeds gasoline.
He sounds very flammable
@@CipherSerpico Explains why he's always on fire
Nobody cuts Danny.
Yesss, awesome footage from the best concert I've ever seen + Tool hitting the studio in the summer = yay.
