As much as I would absolutely love to sit at that kit and belt some stuff out I honestly wouldn't know what to do or couldn't do anything to do the kit justice at all. This man knows exactly why and how he wants his kit set up and it's amazing to hear him talk about it like a regular dude who just loves to play
I caught one of his drumsticks back on the Aemina tour. It was before he switched to Vic Firth. It has a huge knot towards the bottom end of the stick, whereas his Vic Firth stick is more of a taper that gets bigger towards the bottom. The company was Trueline. I caught the stick after seeing Tool play in Nashville, TN during the '97 Lollapolooza tour. As they were exiting the stage, I yelled out Danny's name & he heard me & tossed a broken stick my way. I made the catch of a lifetime that day!!
Actually hes correct kinda in thr four men..theu are geared together with the music a lot of songs start erratic and many times they are doing different things then it clickes together masterfully
When you think you couldn't possibly like someone more due to their pure talent, they happen to be one of the coolest, nicest people on the planet. An absolute legend.
Yeah but man don't call the tabla sounds like in "Right in Two" tribal sounds those are classical Indian percussion instruments. It's kind of disrespectful i guess
@@SirPhilMcCrackinVonBeggington Tablas were played by masters in the courts of kings in India, it's not a tribal instrument, rather something only learned musicians used to play.
I was lucky enough to catch one of his sticks after they played their set on the '97 Lollapolooza tour! He had a signature Trueline stick then & it has a giant bulge in it in about the same place where the "taper" is on his Vic Firth model. I couldn't believe I caught that thing. Then a damn security guard tried taking it away b/c it was broken & had a sharp edge to it. He put his hand on it but I held on! He tried talkin' me out of it but there was no way. I've still got it to this day!!
You can try, just find some vintage sonor drums that have thick drum shells with Tom sizes through 8”-16” with 22”or 24”bass drums that are 18” in depth. Roto toms are also great. Electronic drums are very personal, so what ever you want. If you can’t find thick drum shells, just use what you can find.
I love how technical he is about it, I'm not a drummer and know absolutely nothing about percussion, but I do know that my ears recognize him as the greatest drummer I've ever experienced.
Danny's best attribute is his genuineness. He's an honest, no frills, down to earth dude who just wants to play drums and destroy his ego in the process...
Thank you for posting these. Danny is probably among the top five drummers in the world and he comes across as this approachable, understated guy who still does jazz gigs on the side, and talks quite intelligently about the ergonomics of a customized drum kit. Good stuff to watch...bonus points for over the shoulder shots of the "Jambi" live performance - probably my favorite song from 10,000 Days.
This is a little tough to explain. Watch the video Until The End with Chad Szeliga on UA-cam. He explains how to do a flam slow and fast. It's basically like hitting two notes at the same time BUT one hits the pad or drum before the other and it gives it this cool sound.
f**king amazing he remembers all those crazy, complicated rhythms. I have a few favorite drummers but Danny is far and away my favorite drummer ever. Pretty much all four guys are in my top 5 favorite musicians
I got to see Meshuggah open for Tool, back in the day. During Carey's solo, Haake came out and played a series of rack toms. It was epic. I'd love to see them repeat it.
+Jon Richt Yes! They would have a guest drummer play those during Triad; the guest drummer was usually be the drummer for whichever band they were touring with. I was lucky enough to see the one with Haake, but wasn't close enough to see whoever was jamming with or even that anybody was...also didn't know about the genius almighty beastiness that is Meshuggah. My complaint for those performances is that those rack toms were too low in the mix...they might not have had time to sound-check them.
+Mitchell S. Excellent memory, Mitchell! Yeah, the same thing happened for me: Haake was too low in the mix. Right after that show, I bought Chaosphere, my first 'shuggah album. I think it's time Tool opens for THEM :)
I just love listening to Danny and Gavin Harrison talking about their setups and sticks, they are so well informed and really know what they want. Kind of tired of drummers in interviews who doesn't know shit about why their setup is that way.
His signature sticks are purely awesome easily one of my favorites, Danny is a huge reason I play drums extremely awesome to have any insight on his drumming.
I did this too recently. It feels a little weird just muscle memory-wise, but also already feels a little better, which is surprising since it's a pretty big change from the way I've been playing for the last 15 years.
stef88sf no, they are working on it, but there has been no announcements regarding a release date. they said they were getting close in 2013 and its still not out yet so itll be a minute. apparently maynard has entered the writing process which happens after most everything is finished so it is getting close
Its soo funny to me to see this vid. I bought those sticks because they are so comfortable, and didn't pay attention to who the signature was. Turns out to be by my favorite drummer...

I thought I was a great drummer at 15 yrs ! Till I went to a TOOL show and I realize I have a lot of work! So I go get the doubles and upgraded my cymbols from playing 3 so I went to 8 and added some Rotor toms! It change my life and gave me a lot to learn and incorporate! The power of Drumms I LOVE IT
I've actually switched to Vic Firth drum sticks. As time goes by, you mature and grow, and for some reason I try not to overthink, the Vic Firth sticks just feel better than what I was playing. And in music, you follow what you feel inside: "that gut feeling" I guess you call it. Yeah Danny's kit is a definite reflection of the man himself. He plays from a point I'd never even consider as I think it is important to come at the instrument in an organic way that utilizes your strengths. So I play with a heavy driving force that is more single than double bass oriented with the less is more attitude to my playing, focusing on playing what's best for the song. And Danny does the same thing I think. He really accents the music with really creative rhythms and time signatures to create completely unique yet rockin' songs. I guess we all can't be that good. :)
lol Danney is crazy dude, he just rattled off how all of his drums are practically individually customly made haha he is even doing stadiums with frikin roto toms lol im about to go by me some of those (and thats not a joke) ;P
It was beyond amazing! I had never caught a drumstick at least not by someone like Danny Carey.I was on a natural high!
