    Agreed, I am not even the biggest fan of Nissan or Toyota but to this day the Datsun 240 Z and Toyota 2000 GT are some of favourite designs of any car, period.
    That said when I look at this concept. I do see the 240Z nods but I don't know that I like it. I don't hate it but I can't work out what's not working here. Perhaps it might be the grille.
    Edit: I think I know what it is. The car is a little stocky in comparison. I feel like if it was squashed down a bit. Or widend out a bit, it would be much better. Honestly I love the side and above profiles but I think it's mostly from the front like head on. It just looks tact on a bit. Maybe if they just did a bit more with the grille. Like pulled and curved out the front a bit more as opposed to the more abrupt looking ending.
    Edit: True to form both of your redesigns have instantly done enough to complete it for me much better. I hope Nissan takes notes..

      @whodat9198 3 роки тому

      Yep, it's a nice attempt but the elements don't really mesh well or flow. their retro homologation has incongruities. Also, the new car will be longer, taller and more narrow than the 370. That means worse handling and response. Considering nissan is broke it'll prob be as heavy or heavier too. The fat grill is fake and the rear tail lights are too narrow and them trying to cram in the 300z oval rings in such a tiny area looks weird. 240z rear looks way better for this overall look. Forcing the 300z taillights pretty much sums up the whole concept overall.

    First time here - I really enjoyed your take. I appreciate a technical artist's perspective. My initial reaction wasn't very exciting but after sleeping on it I think it's brilliant. To me, a Z32 300zx owner and fan, this looks like a worthy successor to MY car, but with lines closer to the 240 which is very exciting. Not to disparage the 350/370, but I've never been remotely interested. I was hoping you'd try adding something like the front bumper from the 240, even if it was a just a split in the intake.
    Also, as much as I *hate* to admit it because I really like the z32-inspired lights out back, someone 'shopped this and I think it looks SO good: imgur.com/a/jU8vGeH

    Love your show! I watched the premier live and liked the Proto overall. The grill was a turnoff instantly though. Looks like my toaster oven waiting for a pizza. So I thought, throw a transition bar across the front or at least across the corners too break up the visuals of black hole. Even a neutral color on the grill would help. The grill distrupts the visual balance of the car overall, as does the extra sharp corner behind the rear wheel. I simplified my silver 350Z back in 2004, removed front emblem, molded mud guards, never added anything to it other than flushed out SF Winning Volks and linear CFLs in place of the front reflectors, LEDs were not quite there yet. I've always received nice compliments... Keep up the great design work!

There still is a MASSIVE amount of testing and tweaking the car needs to go through. This car won’t be in showrooms until after the Nissan Ariya arrives in showrooms in the fall of 2021. The earliest we could see the 400z on dealers lots is 2022.

As for the bumper that was only ever on the American version of the car and it does look a bit odd without it, but overall most people bought a bumper ‘chin’ style splitter to break up the nose of the car and in my opinion that looks like that first sketch you made which I love!

    The regulation about the vertical projection of the front bumper is due to pedestrian safety, when you hit someone at knee level it is now required that you also take them at the ankle, so it's a more "even" impact, that can be quite easily solved here with a color separation, but then it will also look at bit more like the new vantage, where you only have the top half of the bumper visible.

    I think Nissan could do a lot to break up the front grill by giving those little rounded rectangles in the grill some body-color pinstriping. You could see that they gave those little ports a silver finish, so they don't completely disappear in the dark void of that big rectangle grill, but I don't think it's enough. Maybe full chrome pinstriping could work to brighten them up, but I think body-color would be a bit more modern.

    I'm also a car designer as you. I agree with most of the things you said but I also like the original theme. As you know, the Nissan designers and leadership has been seen this model in full size for more than a year and I'm 100% sure that something very similar to your proposal has been presented as a "safe current" execution. Not counting the hundreds of sketches they had produced until they got to this point. The raw rectangle in the front is different and unexpected, creates a sort of "something is missing" but at the same time gives the car a signature and you end up liking it after seeing it day by day. Awesome job done by Nissan, but I will keep my 350z for a while as it never gets old....:)

    Let's just appreciate the fact that Nissan made a new sports car after 11 years with manual transmission and no electric motors in it. The car is very well designed, despite not being 100% perfect. Comparing it with the new BMWs or Mercs with oversized grilles or lights put in weird angles, this looks like the heaven of 2020s car design.
    Totally loved it.

    Upon first glance the grill was a shock to my eyes, but I think it will be more appreciated in person. There are some pictures that are doing it some slight justice, but I think in the flesh more people will get it. After seeing your alterations it actually made me appreciate its simplicity and helped my eyes see that it plays to the overall clean and simple look as well as adds an understated boldness to it. So I guess it's officially grown on me. Lol
    BUT, I was hoping you would go more in depth about the overall design and success points. I for one LOVE the magic they created with the side sills! I think that small detail along with the rear bumper trick sets of the understated aggressiveness of the car from the side and front 3/4 views.

    It's funny, as soon as the unveil event was over, the first thing I did was sketch a new grill on my phone. I followed the lines of the hood/bonnet to angle the side of the grill inward, added a radius to the top corners, and added some lights under the headlights to memic the signal lights of the 240, but they also were similar to the placement of the lights on the 370 Nismo bumber.

  • @blairbolton1895
    @blairbolton1895 3 роки тому

    Yes the big black square needed some softening. Maybe OEM or aftermarket changes like body colored grill pieces, the brake vents as well. I think the headlights could use some massaging as well .. the inboard/hood side corners softened to be more 'ovally' ala the 240.

  • @Marrrrtin
    @Marrrrtin 3 роки тому

    I LOVE the simplicity of this Z Proto design, and I don't think your redesign did any favours to the grille. I just want the bottom corners of the grille to come inwards a bit, and maybe the top corners to be slightly more rounded like on the 370Z. That way, it's not a rectangle, and visually fades away towards the bottom like on the 240Z.
    And I want the headlights to be perfect almond shapes (vesica piscis) and only have two 'corners', removing the inner ones above the top DRL LED. Other than that I REALLY like this design, glad to see it on this channel and hats off to Nissan for a job well done!
