The M3 is the most important car in terms of sales, and I bet they instead used the M4 as a platform to experiment and push some boundaries that could challenge existing opinions and expectations. The people behind the M4 design probably had way longer leash than those who worked on the M3.

@MISTER SIR All of you are wrong. The M4 F82 well out sold the M3. Wasn't even close! As an owner of an M4, I totally understand why. Most people that want a true performance car want it to have the look too and most do think 2 doors are sportier than 4. Note I said "Most". So don't make assumptions. Just because you have kids (which I do) doesn't mean you automatically have to have a 4 door car. Heck, its not me that has to crawl in the back. That's my 9 year olds job. M4 looks absolutely aggressive with this grill and I like front most the people who doesn't like new m3 and m4 are hater of big grills I think big grill looks beautiful on every car the big thing I don't like about m4 is back on back it looks like whale they could make back better
Still not a fan of the grille but honestly I would say the grille on the new M3 and M4 looks better than the grille on the base 4-series But it’s still got to go like the 8-series look is a lot better without looking too much as the same as the other BMW models
Now imagine the M3 having the front from the base 3 series with a more agressive bumper. There are some renders out there and they look absolutely menacing and awesome. This looks... Ok. But it coulda been way better. Its ok they fucked the 4 series up. But why do they break the tradition of the m3 being a 3 series and force the new design on us with 2!!! Cars. I was so excited for the new m3 but now imma wait for the new Nissan Z and get that one. Fuck this.
@ Death Is Freedom I’ve been wondering this for many months and my conclusion is that BMW didn’t want to have two different looking M Cars with the same engine. I believe they think that most people would prefer the more normal/traditional front end and that would seriously cannibalise the sales of the M4. I love the look of them but I wish that they had basically made it a more aggressive version of the M340i.
No I actually disagree sketch monkey was right about everything..it's the body. The BMW dna aint there they need to at least keep some of the brand's identity...Although this newly designed face is radical and mean it's quite exotic I don't mind it and the thing is it maintains BMW's typical dual grilles and headlights but the rest of the car is off..is it a mustang combined with merc, like no ounce of BMW dna at all 🤦🏾♂️
Tottaly Agree the m3 looks so much better with better shoulder line kinda like the old e90 , and I love the grille it honestly reminds me of the single seat racers of the past , and you didn't have to change the grille on it like you said you didn't want to anyways , I think people are associating this new grille to the one on the 7 series and and as such but this is different it's more comparable to the older motor racing cars and as such BMW just modernizing it
I really want that nose to grow on me because other than the pig snout grille, these cars look on the face of it (pardon the pun) fantastic.. But that grille is just too polarising for me. I don't want to dislike it but then the M340i exists and not only does it look like better value, it looks a damn sight better too. I feel like these grilles were too much too soon and they're no more functional than their modern traditional designs, no thanks to the censors and safety bar that breaks it up where the L plate sits.. Guys, if something isn't broken.. be really careful about fixing it. I am sorry but it just comes across like two different teams design different cars, couldn't agree and smashed this together. The grille looks better in these cars than the standard 4-series, the lack of a surround around the grille does a huge difference and interestingly enough compared to the standard 4-series the front end design is refreshingly clean/minimalist. imo, of course. I still don't like the headlights on either one, though. The standard 3-series headlights are much more aggressive and "masculine" (ridiculous term to refer to a car with but hard to explain otherwise), these ones are too soft and round.
Yeah bruh you're spot on I love the facia BMW did but the the headlights a lil they shoulda been sharper and no it aint a ridiculous term to use "mascule" to describe a car lol ...They should have kept the standard headlights the way they got them on the base 4series with the sharp line going down toward the grille on top of the eyebrow if you know what I mean
I agree with you. The main problem in the M4 is the side. From the side I see a Mustang or C class coupe, ans it is too soft compared to the front design. Side and front dont match.
I agree re: C class. I also see a prior gen Honda Accord Coupe, which came out prior to the current C class Coupe. As a former e92 owner, there is just something about the new M4 profile that doesn't work for me. I also see the current C-class sedan in the profile of the M3.... To my eye, the Audi RS5 Sportback is the best looking car in this segment.
Can we all agree that the current Mustang is an absolute gem? people thought it looked like trash when it came out but now I'm scared to see the next generation because I know ford will screw it up.
The m4 lines don't lign up but the m3 just looks like the old model with a new mask : ( Also: you can't say you want to keep the BMW DNA and want symetry over comfort. Would look sick but if it's a BMW we know what they'd choose... Also also: nice redesign but I agree the new grills are nice they just don't fit with the current M rear.
You're right about everything in the new models. I can't set my eyes on the swoop-top on the M4, and neither on the M8 which looks like the Mustang got a BMW badge, while this one's a chaotic collage of multiple bodies. The M3 looks stunning as you said, but I'm also not enjoying the too sleekish sharp headlights. They started to look like Camry or Lexus's. The taillights do resemble Lexus sedans anyway. I miss the original BMW coupe styling and rear quarter panels.
For me the main difference between the M3 and the M4 is that the M3 looks more like a BMW and the M4 more like a Mustang specially for the shape of the C pilar.

I really think the grille can work if the design around it matched better. Atm, it looks like it was just pasted on, almost unfinished. The lines are also just a little too messy in front, and the side is not dynamic as previous gens, as he said. And I don't like that they're moving away from traditional aspects of BMW styling. Hopefully I can get an old M3 someday.
I agree the M3 does look better than the M4. I honestly feel like it's all part of a marketing strategy... The guys at BMW *///M* know that generally speaking, it's not the best looking car... More people will talk about it in the media. Double the posts will be created on social media talking about the "weird look" of this new M3/M4. You gotta do what you gotta do to make a statement in the automotive industry... People will still buy it, so... Now we will see how it sells... If it doesn't that good, there will probably be a better looking facelifted version of it in around 2~3 years. 🤔...
So true, the problem isn't only the nose, the whole management of design department should be shame about what they've done to the public which no doubt at the same time the best PR work you could ever imagine as well.
Honestly, I don't think it would look as bad if they simply lowered the top edge a bit, maybe just a couple inches, and smoothed out the hood line so you don't have those awkward bulges that make the grill design dominate the entire hood, in addition to the entire front bumper.
Other than the new design tail lights. Its pretty much the same rear as the F80. I think it looks pretty nice tbh, Bmw is always trying out new things with their headlights and taillights and this looks pretty good. Or maybe that's just because its in comparison to the M4.
I am always amazed by the skill when you the original picture compared to the redesign. The redesign just looks as it where taken in this state and not "photoshopped"
Redesign is certainly better than the original but the edges of that grille could have been made a bit less pointed, especially at the top. Not rounded but chipping off to make the grille more hexagonal. The grille in the redesign looks like that of a pontiac.
I really hate the way the top of the grill blends into the bonnet. The number plate does a good job of breaking it up though. Looks much better than the concepts.
Yeah I feel you...it's nice the new facia BMW came out with, but there's a small thing kinda off with them headlights the top eyebrow front end area..it's too soft. What BMW shoulda done is same as they got on the base 4series have that angry line at the top connect up more toward the grill..
Thank-you Sketch, you summed it up perfectly, "the front does not match up to the rest of the body". The size of the grill for the 4 series should have represented a radically new car design for the series that separated it from the 3. The grill on the 4 series looks like the aftermath of a car crash that nobody noticed at BMW. If BMW are going to tout the 4 series as being radically different from the 3 series, then they're going to have to go beyond merely the grill and rethink the entire car, including the interior.
Yeah, i actually like the grille, i even like it more than the redesign, but you're right, the broken shoulder line and the smoothness on the center doesn't match the busy wrinkled face and rear end
Like you, I reserved judgment on the M3/M4 until I saw it in person at a BMW event this weekend. While it does look better in person, it is still very hard to like. It is jarring to look at for a long period of time. Most other observers took a few pictures but they also gave a bit of grimace. 2 big things I noticed: 1) The rear fender transition from the doors - it looks like they used the simplest solution to connect the shapes together, which is basically a straight line. It is almost a 90 deg outward jut. It is a clear mismatch to the flow of the side. 2) The blend between headlights and grille looks like they couldn't find an elegant way to bring them together, so they just sanded it down. Sharp lines all up front, and then sort of pulled together randomly. (Plus, the hood intents really are terrible - they serve no purpose at all.) The car is a weird combination of defined cut lines and smoothed surfaces; a conflict within itself. As you elude, it's part aggressive, chiseled and some is fluid and organic. It doesn't seem to know. When I wash my cars, I like to take the time to appreciate the beauty and feel of the surfaces; but I don't think I could feel the same emotion if this was mine. Compared to the e46 and F80, this isn't up to par of great design, imho. I remember what Frank Stephenson says about buying a car because you love it now, not maybe in a few months after getting used to it. Also, the designer of this G80/82 car said something like "a successful design is one that is unmistakable" ...the Pontiac Aztec would disagree.
Very nice Video👍 Your version looks clean. I also re-designed the BMW M4 and created a little BMW M8. I think it would have been nicer when the M4 Front would look like the M8 Front
I think I understand what they were trying to do with these shoulderlines. I assume that they wanted to create an effect so people could recognise one continueus shoulderline on the car, even though there is none. Because in some cases when the reflections are right, it really seems like that the line is there. As you also recognised it somewhere At the Start of the Video. But I honestly like both cars because its just something different which you rarely see in that form from BMW.
My man, you are spot on with your aesthetic analysis! I have been looking at the M440i the last 2 weeks in person and the missing shoulder line really bothers me. It is too round and loses its aggressiveness. I don't mind the grill at all but the rounded shoulder lines makes it looks very sluggish and resembles a Genesis/Toyota from he 3/4 rear view. After looking at the M4, I am SO glad they at least added a sharp shoulder line. I agree, it would look better if the shoulder line continued across to the front like it does in previous models. For that reason and the improved grill as well, I will hold out for the M4.
I think the m3 really works with the big grille. The only thing that I would change is making the grille start in line with the headlights instead of above them
agree with you completely, M3 >> M4. one more thing I'd like to point to is the line flow at the rear that goes across the trunk to the outside and down. it's broken up on the M4 and nicely connected on the M3
Previously i can agree totally on your redesign on mercedes new s-class Your mod on bmw m4 front nose grill and the front headlamp sucks, I prefer original totally

In the redesign he corrected the lines of the headlights with the front of the car.

A straight six engine, RWD, and a 6-speed manual makes a great formula
Gotta say, I still prefer the break lights on the M4 over the M3. the M3 ones are a bit more traditionally BMW but oh well

I don't know why people don't like the new nose, I think it looks pretty good
Indeed
The m4 looks more like a M40i, like they gave it the M front but then forgot to really turn up the rest of the design
Exactly, they should of stuck with the M340i look and gave it a more aggressive bumpers in front.
*Please a video on car review on India's first hypercar Vazirani Shul*
I’d still take a Giulia QV every day of the week...
Agreed. An E92 would change my mind though. One of the best BMW's ever, I think.

Even as a bmw fan I can admit that it is pretty cool having a Ferrari v6 under the hood and the julia has the Italian flavor to the car.
Ugh the more I look at it, the more it grows on me, especially the M3. Its certainly more acceptable than the 7 series
just search for older BM's and you will hate it again haha
@@theutgardianchannel1952 the 2017 series is fucking beautiful
I agree the M3 does look better than the M4.
I honestly feel like it's all part of a marketing strategy...
The guys at BMW *///M* know that generally speaking, it's not the best looking car...
More people will talk about it in the media.
Double the posts will be created on social media talking about the "weird look" of this new M3/M4.
You gotta do what you gotta do to make a statement in the automotive industry...
People will still buy it, so...
Now we will see how it sells...
If it doesn't that good, there will probably be a better looking facelifted version of it in around 2~3 years.
🤔...
Yeah spot on you got it my brother...and then if it doesn't sit well at lci mid cycle facelift they'll address that 👍🏾

THE VERTICAL GRILLS ON THE NEW M4 & M3 REMIND ME OF HITLERS MUSTACHE💀
I’ve loved the M4 always and tbh this grille has grown on me. I want this one now but wouldn’t mind grabbing the 1st gen now
Most of the people who were in charge of BMW M division left after e90 generation.
These are gorgeous imo, very early 1900s bmw design. Love the courage to make this design by BMW. And that's from an Audi fan boy
lmao the crinkled paper analogy was on point
Even you can't save this. Horrendous
The grille could still be smaller, and there's too much going on in the front bumper. Otherwise, it looks good.
BMW needs to hire TheSketchMonkey.
The rear of the new 3 series looks like a Lexus
The rear of the 3 series looks like an old Toyota Camry..boring as
Its just flipped audi S5 (2018) taillights with basic quad exhaust setup
Other than the new design tail lights. Its pretty much the same rear as the F80. I think it looks pretty nice tbh, Bmw is always trying out new things with their headlights and taillights and this looks pretty good. Or maybe that's just because its in comparison to the M4.
I still like the M4 more...and would rather go with it still
I like the design anyway, I'm pretty sure that people will like it in the future!
Interesting truth about BMW design. It looks much better in real
Agreed
its so nice from the back
hate how BMW did the front
I am always amazed by the skill when you the original picture compared to the redesign. The redesign just looks as it where taken in this state and not "photoshopped"
This is my favorite design of 2020, bmw absolutely nailed it, they are amazing, both... yall will get used to it and then will simp with me
Exactly, give those fools a month and they’ll love it.
Agreed
Redesign is certainly better than the original but the edges of that grille could have been made a bit less pointed, especially at the top. Not rounded but chipping off to make the grille more hexagonal. The grille in the redesign looks like that of a pontiac.
I really hate the way the top of the grill blends into the bonnet. The number plate does a good job of breaking it up though. Looks much better than the concepts.
Your shoulder line change is spot on.
i feel like that the headlights dont suit the cars, they look to round or smth else
Yeah I feel you...it's nice the new facia BMW came out with, but there's a small thing kinda off with them headlights the top eyebrow front end area..it's too soft. What BMW shoulda done is same as they got on the base 4series have that angry line at the top connect up more toward the grill..
Had a field day in the bmw configuator. The manual m4 in black with the carbon package is actually not that bad either, except that hood.
"not so BMW" then makes it even less BMW
Thank-you Sketch, you summed it up perfectly, "the front does not match up to the rest of the body". The size of the grill for the 4 series should have represented a radically new car design for the series that separated it from the 3. The grill on the 4 series looks like the aftermath of a car crash that nobody noticed at BMW. If BMW are going to tout the 4 series as being radically different from the 3 series, then they're going to have to go beyond merely the grill and rethink the entire car, including the interior.
New grills look great.
Fight me.
Yeah, i actually like the grille, i even like it more than the redesign, but you're right, the broken shoulder line and the smoothness on the center doesn't match the busy wrinkled face and rear end
If they were thinner and upright, OK.
If they were wider and lower, OK.
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?
(Plus, the hood intents really are terrible - they serve no purpose at all.)
The car is a weird combination of defined cut lines and smoothed surfaces; a conflict within itself.
Ummmm, I actually love the M4 new look. The m4 looks better than the M3 hands down!!!!
Very nice Video👍 Your version looks clean. I also re-designed the BMW M4 and created a little BMW M8. I think it would have been nicer when the M4 Front would look like the M8 Front
Love the car hate the grill that's the only thing I dislike bout the new m3 n m4
Hate*
Same
I think I understand what they were trying to do with these shoulderlines.
Correct title to this video is actually;
"The problem with the 2021 BMW M4 isn't ONLY the nose"
Holy crap, taking that shoulder line all the way to the rear seriously improves the design just by itself.
Actually, it is the nose.
It looks like a high speed beaver.
I would only change the shoulder line by all means you’re 💯 spot on
It looks like a Q60 with a terrible grille
even with the shit grill looks better than a q60

You had it nailed at 13:04 ... I love that look, reminds me of the M6 with the headlight change.
Yeah that right there was beautiful..soften and re-shape the headlights slighty and the whole thing changes it's pretty 👌🏾
In 10 years' time, we're gonna take a look at the ugliest cars of the last decade and this will be one of them.
Definitely. Looks like car design has it's peaks and falls and I don't think we are in the peak era lol
Wow. Your design of the M4 is the best I’ve seen. (Atleast to my eye). It captures the menacing attitude of the Previous gen M4 design perfectly.
now I see the M4 uglier than before 🤣
Same!😉
The way to go is Sharknose, like in the past! Let's wait... it will take some time until they all realize... Trust me!😉
Before it was called lion nose or shark nose and now its pig nose, its evolving just backwards
I also liked the look of the M3 way more when I saw them both together. Thank you for explaining why it's pretty interesting :)
this new bmw fronts are ugly as hell... no way you can change my mind.
I think the m3 really works with the big grille. The only thing that I would change is making the grille start in line with the headlights instead of above them
Both look horrible...

your redesign is spot on! just moving the plates to a horizontal surface at the bottom is a big improvement.
Ugliest M cars I've seen so far.
agree with you completely, M3 >> M4.
one more thing I'd like to point to is the line flow at the rear that goes across the trunk to the outside and down. it's broken up on the M4 and nicely connected on the M3
Is it just me, or does the new M4 grill look like giant nostrils...
It looks like it's ready to chew some wood and build a dam
