- BMW just revealed their 2021 M3 & M4 and there’s a problem but it isn't what you think. Let me show you what I mean. The brand new BMW M3 and M4 arrives at dealers next March and I have no doubt they will sell just as well as the previous generation, if not better.
In this video, I’m going to tell you why.
I’m also going to let you know what I think about the design of the new M3 and M4, and why the M3 is such a better design in my opinion, than the M4. It doesn’t really have to do with the vertical, static grille although I am going to redesign that as well.
But really, what it comes down to is simply, a wrinkled sheet of print paper.
BMW is the only manufacturer in this segment that still offers the M3 and the M4 with a six-speed manual transmission BUT the manual transmission is tied to the 473-hp variation of twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six.
You have two versions to choose from with the 2021 M3 and M4 - the regular 473 version of the competition version with 503 horsepower. This could be a tricky choice since the Competition is only available with an eight-speed automatic sourced from ZF. Personally, I think I sacrifice 30 horses for a stick shift since I would spend more time having fun flooring it on the onramp to I-95 than I would kissing the apex at Sebring raceway.
Max torque is 406 lb-ft on the regular Ms, and 479 lb-ft for the Competitions.
The Competition models will also have optional 4-wheel drive. But it will be M-tuned which means front axle power only kicks in if absolutely necessary and if you like you can switch it off completely if you’re feeling some drift action.
Top speed is limited to 155-mph as standard but it can be raised to 180 mph and zero to 60 mph takes a 4.1 seconds in the standard Ms and drops to 3.8 seconds in the Competition models.
So what about price? Well the M3 will cost you $70,895, and the M4 starts at $72,795, BUT the interesting thing here is that the Competition package is only an extra $2900. BMW really making it a very hard decision, what to pick? The 6-speed manual or an extra 30hp for 3 grand?

It’s like the guy who designed the M4 never spoke to the guys who designed the M3.
Probably half true. They know the M3 is gonna be the big seller with most requirements - simply due to its more practical nature that caters to a larger customer segment. The M3 is the most important car in terms of sales, and I bet they instead used the M4 as a platform to experiment and push some boundaries that could challenge existing opinions and expectations. The people behind the M4 design probably had way longer leash than those who worked on the M3.
Good. Because the M3 is a well known name so it should sell more. Also I want the m4 to be named as m3 coupe again.
The guy that designed the M4 was late one day and asked the M3 designer: "can I copy your homework?" and the M3 guy said "sure, just change it up a little so no one notices."
@MISTER SIR All of you are wrong. The M4 F82 well out sold the M3. Wasn't even close! As an owner of an M4, I totally understand why. Most people that want a true performance car want it to have the look too and most do think 2 doors are sportier than 4. Note I said "Most". So don't make assumptions. Just because you have kids (which I do) doesn't mean you automatically have to have a 4 door car. Heck, its not me that has to crawl in the back. That's my 9 year olds job. No I actually disagree sketch monkey was right about everything..it's the body. The BMW dna aint there they need to at least keep some of the brand's identity...Although this newly designed face is radical and mean it's quite exotic I don't mind it and the thing is it maintains BMW's typical dual grilles and headlights but the rest of the car is off..is it a mustang combined with merc, like no ounce of BMW dna at all 🤦🏾♂️

The new M2 Competition is by far the best modern M car BMW makes. There is a reason everyone in the press comes to this conclusion as well.

There's more horizontal lines here, so the car don't look so narrow. Also there's no "smilng pig" lower vent under beever's teeth.

Now imagine the M3 having the front from the base 3 series with a more agressive bumper. There are some renders out there and they look absolutely menacing and awesome. This looks... Ok. But it coulda been way better. Its ok they fucked the 4 series up. But why do they break the tradition of the m3 being a 3 series and force the new design on us with 2!!! Cars. I was so excited for the new m3 but now imma wait for the new Nissan Z and get that one. Fuck this.

@ Death Is Freedom I’ve been wondering this for many months and my conclusion is that BMW didn’t want to have two different looking M Cars with the same engine. I believe they think that most people would prefer the more normal/traditional front end and that would seriously cannibalise the sales of the M4.
I love the look of them but I wish that they had basically made it a more aggressive version of the M340i.

Tottaly Agree the m3 looks so much better with better shoulder line kinda like the old e90 , and I love the grille it honestly reminds me of the single seat racers of the past , and you didn't have to change the grille on it like you said you didn't want to anyways , I think people are associating this new grille to the one on the 7 series and and as such but this is different it's more comparable to the older motor racing cars and as such BMW just modernizing it

I really want that nose to grow on me because other than the pig snout grille, these cars look on the face of it (pardon the pun) fantastic.. But that grille is just too polarising for me. I don't want to dislike it but then the M340i exists and not only does it look like better value, it looks a damn sight better too.
I feel like these grilles were too much too soon and they're no more functional than their modern traditional designs, no thanks to the censors and safety bar that breaks it up where the L plate sits.. Guys, if something isn't broken.. be really careful about fixing it. I am sorry but it just comes across like two different teams design different cars, couldn't agree and smashed this together. Less so with the M3 but the M4 especially. It's a disaster.

I'm just gonna blame the Chinese. Bmw especially targets chinese consumers, and the Chinese do believe that bigger grills = more prestigious. And the m models are the most prestigious that bmw has to offer. Like look at the x7. Front end was made for China and it has a massive grill

You're right about everything in the new models. I can't set my eyes on the swoop-top on the M4, and neither on the M8 which looks like the Mustang got a BMW badge, while this one's a chaotic collage of multiple bodies. The M3 looks stunning as you said, but I'm also not enjoying the too sleekish sharp headlights. They started to look like Camry or Lexus's. The taillights do resemble Lexus sedans anyway. I miss the original BMW coupe styling and rear quarter panels.

Very good analysis of the design, as usual, and an entertaining redesign. I was hoping you should redesign it through putting back the cut-off nose you spoke of. That would be cool and have a little Super Seven about it.

I am always amazed by the skill when you the original picture compared to the redesign. The redesign just looks as it where taken in this state and not "photoshopped"

I agree with you. The main problem in the M4 is the side. From the side I see a Mustang or C class coupe, ans it is too soft compared to the front design. Side and front dont match.

I agree re: C class. I also see a prior gen Honda Accord Coupe, which came out prior to the current C class Coupe. As a former e92 owner, there is just something about the new M4 profile that doesn't work for me. I also see the current C-class sedan in the profile of the M3.... To my eye, the Audi RS5 Sportback is the best looking car in this segment.
Can we all agree that the current Mustang is an absolute gem? people thought it looked like trash when it came out but now I'm scared to see the next generation because I know ford will screw it up.

It's NEVER gonna grow on me. The 4-Series is dead (for 7-8 years at least), but why do it to the M3!? The current 3-Series has a great grill. Why ruin it!?
Also, even the new 8-Series has a great grill. If anything, the 8-Series was the car to experiment with, not the more affordable ones.
7 Series.......ruined back in 2001. 1 Series=ruined. 4 Series=ruined. 3 Series=ruined. Only the 5-Series keeping the brand ALIVE......for now.

I'm surprised that you didn't talk about the horizontal lines on the grille, I'm sure that by just changing the pattern in it it would look better (a bit like the pattern on the 4 series concept)

Other than the new design tail lights. Its pretty much the same rear as the F80. I think it looks pretty nice tbh, Bmw is always trying out new things with their headlights and taillights and this looks pretty good. Or maybe that's just because its in comparison to the M4.

Yeah I feel you...it's nice the new facia BMW came out with, but there's a small thing kinda off with them headlights the top eyebrow front end area..it's too soft. What BMW shoulda done is same as they got on the base 4series have that angry line at the top connect up more toward the grill..
Ugh the more I look at it, the more it grows on me, especially the M3. Its certainly more acceptable than the 7 series

My man, you are spot on with your aesthetic analysis! I have been looking at the M440i the last 2 weeks in person and the missing shoulder line really bothers me. It is too round and loses its aggressiveness. I don't mind the grill at all but the rounded shoulder lines makes it looks very sluggish and resembles a Genesis/Toyota from he 3/4 rear view. After looking at the M4, I am SO glad they at least added a sharp shoulder line. I agree, it would look better if the shoulder line continued across to the front like it does in previous models. For that reason and the improved grill as well, I will hold out for the M4.
I also liked the look of the M3 way more when I saw them both together. Thank you for explaining why it's pretty interesting :)

Is there any mechanical differences in the competition/non competition motors? Could the 30hp non competition be just a difference in tune?
Almost certanly, just like a stupid 155 mph limit. Enthusiast choice would be 6 speed RWD and if you really want the power you can easily tune it cheap and safe to about 550. After that you'll probably need more money.
BlitzkriegRap yeah if I had the money to buy one right now I’d choose the manual non competition. But I would still feel burned by not having the more powerful “competition” motor. But if they’re exactly the same and the only difference is a simple Ecu flash wouldn’t feel so bad

I really hate the way the top of the grill blends into the bonnet. The number plate does a good job of breaking it up though. Looks much better than the concepts.

The thing that aanyos me the most is, that the headlights sit sooooo far back from the grill. The lines don't just break in 2 dimensions , but in all 3 dimensions

For me the main difference between the M3 and the M4 is that the M3 looks more like a BMW and the M4 more like a Mustang specially for the shape of the C pilar.
I would have liked the side as you redesigned it, adding some sort of Hofmeister kink, and leve it as it is to let the "novelty" of the new design sink.

Your explanations are very interesting and often eye opening. I did not like the new Ms at first glance and now I like them even less (every time I see them I think about the inconsistent ‘wrinkled paper’ approach).
The new 4 Series looks good. But l had issues with it looking plain on the side. It also lost the Hoffmeister Kink on the last pillar. But the larger rear tires visually illustrates that power is coming from the back end.

the grill is less outward, while the lights are too inward, the grill should be made wider outwards, while the inside lights are slightly reduced for add the grill (maybe)
I think I understand what they were trying to do with these shoulderlines. I assume that they wanted to create an effect so people could recognise one continueus shoulderline on the car, even though there is none. Because in some cases when the reflections are right, it really seems like that the line is there. As you also recognised it somewhere At the Start of the Video. But I honestly like both cars because its just something different which you rarely see in that form from BMW.
In 10 years' time, we're gonna take a look at the ugliest cars of the last decade and this will be one of them.
