This is the Chapter that my father in law used to discourage me to become a priest.
I’ve been born and raised as a Greek Orthodox Christian.
I got married 11 years ago and my wife’s father is a priest.
His father was a priest also.
He has 3 brothers - all priests.
He has 3 sons - all of them went to Theology School, but none became a priest.
For a while, 7-8 years ago, I was thinking to become a priest, but he discouraged me, based on this chapter, because I have Charcot Marie Tooth and my hands are slightly deformed...
3-4 years ago I discovered Atheist Experience, then you and others..., and now I’m an atheist, in a big family full of devouted Christians - oh, the irony! 🙂
“Thank God” he discouraged me in becoming a priest - I think it would have been much more dificult to see all the faulty reasoning and become aware of me holding all kinds of unjustified beliefs as a priest...
So, I’m grateful it went that way. 🙂

Sorry but there are so many……too many such obvious lines to this one 😉. I read a book on the Papacy. After the nasty mix up where a woman was elected pope the rules were changed for the election process. When someone obtained the appropriate number of votes, before he was declared Pope the most junior cardinal was required to put his hand up the electees cassock and check for testicles. If he found them he proclaimed joyous news, he has testicles.. the chair the newly elected pope had to sit on when this was done is in the Vatican museum. Practice was stopped around the time of John xxiii. True story. It’s a bit like Rabbi’s kissing a babies penis after circumcision, seriously, no one said hang on a minute…….

I swear a majority of them would just as suddenly, no longer be concerned in the least with whether their chosen deity might exist and want their gratitude and admiration. Leviticus 21, let’s go see what our good friends YHWH and Moses are up to now. Warning! This chapter contains sexism, conditional love, discrimination and questionable family values, readers discretion is advised.
    Leviticus 21:1-4
This one made no sense. Wouldn’t the priest’s job is to help everyone? Why only their close relatives? I thought YHWH knows and loves everyone. What if the priest does help everyone regardless if they’re family or a stranger? Is the priest going to get the “ceremonially unclean” label and get iced as a result? If so, that’s awful. That makes YHWH selective.
    Leviticus 21:5-6 (Discrimination: Bald People)
Sorry bald people, can’t be a priest according to the Bible in Leviticus 21. What an absurd rule that shouldn’t be here. I am starting to think YHWH cares so much about appearance that there is no cohesion in how to best live our lives. Also, so Yahovah would only love the individual just because people bring him food offering.
Leviticus 21:7-8 (Misogyny, Questionable Family Values)
So prostitutes get no second chances? This has got to be one of the worst laws in the Bible (Right up there with the “No Gay Marriage” and “No Interracial Marriage” laws). That is what allows room for domestic violence to roam free. This gives me an uneasy feeling of YHWH would rather have people in unstable relationships and punish them for divorcing when a marriage doesn’t work out. Some people grew up with parents who aren’t even meant to be together. Yes, there are relationships that do work and couples grow old together. By forcing couples who don’t get along well to stay in marriage because it’s “holy”, it has horrible consequences. Imagine bringing children or pets into this mess.
    Leviticus 21:9 (Misogyny, Conditional Love)
This inspires the worst verse in Judges. Oh wait until we get there, it’s ugly as Hell (no pun intended). I am not sure which disturbs me more; The idea of a priest burning his daughter at stake for being a prostitute, the priest abandoning his daughter the moment she goes against the Bible, or the talk of burning women who don’t fit the Biblical narrative. *Shivers*
    Leviticus 21:10-12
Who is the High Priest? What is a High Priest? Why is the High Priest (Or priest) not allowed to visit a graveyard? Is it to protect him from demons or wild animals? Again, what if the parents are abusive towards their kid who becomes a Priest? Why is the High Priest not allowed to love the sanctuary? What are the consequences for that?
Leviticus 21:13-15 (Misogyny, Discrimination against Interracial Marriages)
Who knew YHWH is the original Chris Chan. The woman a man marries must be “a virgin”, Aka, God’s “Boyfriend-free Girl”. Why is anyone not allowed to marry a widow? Genesis 38, after Onen died, his brother married his widowed wife. Again, too little too late. Onen’s brother married a widow and “God” had no problem then. Why now? Also, is the divorced women damned to a life of either sticking with their abusive partners or live in isolation? That is wrong on many levels. It dehumanizes women. What if the virgin isn’t a nice person, let alone a good person? “A virgin from his own people”, what? This verse can be identified as “racist” because YHWH demands people to marry others from their own kind. It is anti-interracial marriage. Purity culture, everyone.
    Leviticus 21:16-24 (Discrimination: Ableism)
If “God” can predict the future with precise accuracy, wouldn’t He already know who is the best “virgin” to have kids with and who to avoid? Why punish people who want to marry for who they love? Get ready, YHWH is going to list off who cannot offer him food.
    • No Man who has any defect
    • No Man who is Blind or Lame
    • No Disfigured or Deformed
    • No Man with crippled foot or hand
    • No Hunchback (Sorry Quasimodo, Frollo’s God does not love him at all)
    • No Dwarfs
    • No Man with Eye Defects, Festering/running sores, or damaged t**ticles
    • No descendant of Aaron the Priest who has any defect
Those are all of the people who aren’t allowed near the offering of food to YHWH. First of all, how does this even work? Do they get treated with extra love and protection? What are holy foods?
(6:08) Damn skippy, Hemant! I also thought that Christianity is supposed to be about saving souls. Heck, it was heavily advertised like “Repent from your sins and you will be saved in Jesus name”, “We’re living in the end times, repent now and be saved”, and other sayings like that. If Biblical love were true, then “God”, Jesus or the Holy Spirit would’ve revealed what was originally said directly from Hebrew to English. It would’ve known about the writing system of ancient Hebrew. But no, they don’t give a shit about keeping fellow Christians informed and allowed certain men to either deliberately mistranslate to misinform billions or it wasn’t a mistranslation and it was written with hate, false love, greed, and lust for purity and power.
It was a contradiction to Leviticus 19. It’s like the author was conflicted about whether or not they should love the imperfections of people or go full blown ableism.
Holy shit! The hate is strong here! First misogyny, then racism, then homophobia and now ableism. I would hate to imagine how would a lot of US states would treat people with defects (Alabama, Texas, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, the Carolinas, Tennessee, etc.). If they were to reenforce everything that happens in this chapter, then they had been on the wrong side of history this whole time. I’m getting the impression that Christianity wants us to think it is all nice, loving and bubbly while hiding it’s ugly, hateful and mean-spirited side. Too many people are misinformed because of people like Greg Locke and Mike Lindell.

@@ianbraun271 Even a cursory read-through shows Jesus talked about it plenty. In fact, Jesus talked about hell more than any other person in the Bible. In Luke 16, he describes a great chasm over which “none may cross from there to us.” In Matthew 25, Jesus tells of a time when people will be separated into two groups, one entering into his presence, the other banished to “eternal fire.”
Jesus talks about hell more than he talks about heaven, and describes it more vividly. There’s no denying that Jesus knew, believed, and warned against the absolute reality of hell.
Jesus doesn’t only reference hell, he describes it in great detail. He says it is a place of eternal torment (Luke 16:23), of unquenchable fire (Mark 9:43), where the worm does not die (Mark 9:48), where people will gnash their teeth in anguish and regret (Matt. 13:42), and from which there is no return, even to warn loved ones (Luke 16:19-31). He calls hell a place of “outer darkness” (Matt. 25:30), comparing it to “Gehenna” (Matt. 10:28), which was a trash dump outside the walls of Jerusalem where rubbish was burned and maggots abounded. Jesus talks about hell more than he talks about heaven, and describes it more vividly. There’s no denying that Jesus knew, believed, and warned about the absolute reality of hell.

I queried this a couple of years ago and it seems the answer comes down to money. I asked in relation to Church of England priests and it seems that back when priests could marry there was a problem when the priest died and his family were living in the house provided by the church. They could not be seen to evict them, this would be regarded as unchristian, so they changed the rules so that priests could not marry - that way they could not have any children either and even if they did father a child they would be illegitimate and have no claims over the property.

*The Enuma Elish would later be the inspiration for the Hebrew scribes who created the text now known as the biblical Book of Genesis.* Prior to the 19th century CE, the Bible was considered the oldest book in the world and its narratives were thought to be completely original. In the mid-19th century CE, however, European museums, as well as academic and religious institutions, sponsored excavations in Mesopotamia to find physical evidence for historical corroboration of the stories in the Bible. ***These excavations found quite the opposite, however, in that, once cuneiform was translated, it was understood that a number of biblical narratives were Mesopotamian in origin.***
*Famous stories such as the Fall of Man and the Great Flood were originally conceived and written down in Sumer,* translated and modified later in Babylon, and reworked by the Assyrians ***before they were used by the Hebrew scribes for the versions which appear in the Bible.***
***In revising the Mesopotamian creation story for their own ends, the Hebrew scribes tightened the narrative and the focus but retained the concept of the all-powerful deity who brings order from chaos.*** Marduk, in the Enuma Elish, establishes the recognizable order of the world - *just as God does in the Genesis tale* - and human beings are expected to recognize this great gift and honor the deity through service.

Jesus is indeed Lucifer the Morning Star, which is why Isaiah 14:12 lists Lucifer as the Morning Star and then Jesus calls himself the Morning Star in Rev 22:16. The reason Christards fail to see the obvious is because they are brainwashed by their churches into reading the Bible BACKWARDS and reading the New Testament BEFORE the Old Testament. We read books from FRONT TO BACK for a reason, and that is because you can't possibly understand the end of a book that you don't understand the beginning of. And it is not even possible to fully understand a book from reading the LAST QUARTER of it. With that being said...----> Adam and Eve were NOT first, and the 2 stories of Creation in Genesis are NOT about the same Creation as the Christian church teaches. GOD makes people on the 6th day of Creation in Genesis 1:26. Then in Genesis chapter 2 God rests, God sanctifies the 7th day, and then the LORD God of Israel creates Adam and Eve on the 7th day of Creation. To work on the 7th day that God has blessed and sanctified is BLASPHEMY, which is what makes the LORD God SATAN the LORD of this world. That also makes clear that Adam and Eve were NOT FIRST, they were made second. Doesn't the 6th day of Creation come BEFORE the 7th day of Creation?----> The family lineage that begins with Adam and ends with Jesus is the family lineage made by SATAN the LORD God, not God. That's why Isaiah 14:12 lists Lucifer as the Morning Star, and then Jesus calls himself the Morning Star in Rev 22:16. Jesus was Lucifer in the flesh, not God in the flesh. Jesus is Lucifer the Morning Star! Go to my channel for more details...
That NEW WORLD Order that Alex Jones and other GOP Christards pretend to fight is really the goal of Christianity otherwise known as the NEW EARTH (Isaiah 65:17, Isaiah 66:22, 2 Peter 3:13, Rev 21:1) to be ruled by the New Jerusalem. The New Earth is where the nations are destroyed and massed together for a world government that will be on the shoulders of Jesus. Well, isn't the New World Order a world government as well? And gee, New Earth even sounds exactly like New World, doesn't it? That is not a coincidence, the New Earth is indeed the New World Order. It's all right there in your NEW WORLD Translation Bible if you actually bothered to read it...

The OT purity laws are among the most misunderstood and reinterpreted of the lot. Marriage laws required virgins to ensure a family's estate passed on to the eldest son without any outside claims. If the mother had other partners, one of them could lay claim to the property and goods since no one could take a DNA test to determine true paternity. Wills and probate courts didn't exist.
Priests had to marry a virgin of their people because the sons of a priest basically inherited the priesthood. Again, they needed to ensure that the father was a priest because a priest needed to be of the bloodline of Aaron. They also didn't want the blood of some other, heathen peoples sullying the priesthood.
These were laws for those people under those conditions in those days. They don't apply to the present since they no longer serve an actual purpose. Which explains the reinterpretations. To try and make them fit in the modern world.
