  • In this final chapter of Leviticus, we learn about the value of human life (which is somehow more than zero). We also learn about animals, property, and cold hard cash. Because this IS a religion.

"Either way, it is on you." I thought the Sabbath was to be set aside for the Lord. Should we Worship Him or not Worship Him? "...It is on you." sounds rather menacing. This isn't a book of gangsters, it's a book of priests. You have to understand ancient power structures to understand it--- in the ancient world, power is divided between kings and large slaveholders. The priesthood subverts the power of kings by holding them responsible for keeping religious law, and they subvert the power of slaveholders by forcing them to release the slaves after 6 years of labor. This creates a feudal society, rather than an ancient slave society. Please understand the purpose of these laws.
This chapter is describing the priestly pawn-shop function, they can lend money on collateral of either livestock or slaves. The 'promise' isn't a promise in the modern sense, it's best translated as 'collateral'.

According to the Cecil B. DeMille version of the Bible, the first 10 commands out of the 91 rules in Exodus 20 were written on stone tablets.
In the actual story of Exodus.
“Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the ordinances; and all the people answered with one voice, and said, “All the words that the Lord has spoken we will do.” And Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord.”
So, yeah, Moses had a great memory and wrote those first 91 rules from memory.
The stuff written on tablets and then smashed were the massive amounts of ritual and tabernacle rules from Moses’ second trip up the mountain, but Moses seemed to have memorized them all just fine anyway.
The ACTUAL Ten Commandments written in stone were from the third trip and concluded with not boiling a baby goat in its mothers milk, because that is just creepy.

This is the last chapter and oh boy, what a way to end Leviticus with a BANG! Let’s get started!
    Leviticus 27:1-8
Right off the bat, there is a bit of sexism in this chapter. Where is the sexism in this chapter you may ask? Let me break it down:
Anyone who makes a special vow to dedicate a person to the Lord by giving the equivalent value:
Male (Ages 20-60) - Fifty Shekels of Silver (According to the sanctuary shekel)
Female (Ages 20-60) - Thirty Shekels of Silver
Male (Ages 5-20) - Twenty Shekels of Silver
Female (Ages 5-20) - Ten Shekels of Silver
Male (One Month to Age 5) - Five Shekels of Silver
Female (One Month to Age 5) - Three Shekels of Silver
Male (Ages 60 and up) - Fifteen Shekels of Silver
Female (Ages 60 and up) - Ten Shekels of Silver
This is the equivalent value based on a special vow to dedicate themselves to YHWH. It was to be presented to the priest who sets the values accordingly to what the one thing the vow can afford.
Does the vow have limits? If so, what are they? Where did they get the shekels of silver from? Was that poofed into existence just like the Earth?
    Leviticus 27:9-13
How does a vow make an accepted animal offering holy to the Lord? How does He recognize what’s holy (being all-knowing)? How can He tell which vows are genuine? Which one isn’t? Why can’t they substitute the bad one for a good one? Why would anyone want to get rid of the good one for a bad one? Who would want that? How does the original and substitute animal offering become holy? How would the priests know about the quality of the offering as good or bad? How can they tell what’s holy and what isn’t? How does an owner redeem animal for a fifth to its value?
    Leviticus 27:14-15
Does that mean the priest will need to inspect a person’s house for how dedicated someone is to the Lord? How would they know if the house is good or bad? I guess dictators who claim to speak for God should clean their houses for Holy Inspection by the Priest to see if they are dedicated enough to YHWH (Ex: Vladimir Putin, Mike Lindell). How does one redeem their houses to a fifth of its value? How does house redemption work?
    Leviticus 27:16-21
We went from shekels of silver to a fifth of value to x amount of seeds. What’s a homer of barley seed? Can the farmers dedicate their fields before the Year of Jubilee? How would a priest calculate the value according to the number of years? Why would it’s set values be reduced? Is it because sin? Or is it because it resets after a certain number of years? How does the field owner redeem their field (if interested)? How can they “never redeem the field” if they don’t redeem the field? Can the new owner redeem the field by adding fifth of its value?
    Leviticus 27:22-25
What happens if they don’t pay on that same day? Would they not be able to redeem the field? Does that mean the field would return to the original owner in the Year of Jubilee? Twenty gerahs? What is a Gerah?
    Leviticus 27:26-27
Why is anyone not allowed to dedicate the firstborn of an animal? How would anyone know which of an animal’s children is a firstborn? Set values? What does the author mean by “set values”?
    Leviticus 27:28-29
So, does this mean no selling (or redeeming) land, slaves or animals to other people? “No person devoted to destruction may be ransomed…” Let me, because sin.
    Leviticus 27:30-34
Why is anyone forbidden to pick out the good from the bad or make any substitutions? What’s a tithe?
This seems to be a theme with this chapter. If I have to sum up this chapter in a nutshell with one word, it would be dedication. From the shekels of silver to the Year of Jubilee, it seems to me that YHWH created everything (according to the Bible) so everything must go to Him. I find some of the verses here confusing.

Fun fact: We can actually calculate the approximate biblical value of human life based on this chapter, the weight of a shekel, and the current price of silver.
    Spoiler: It's not very high.
Let's start by looking at the upper value. Fifty shekels for an adult male. The weight of a shekel varies a bit, but we're looking for the maximum value, and that's about 17 grams. Silver is currently about 73 American cents per gram. So the highest value is a massive $630.
So that's our upper limit, but the more *likely* weight of an Israelite shekel is about 11g. Which gives us values of under $25 to a touch over $400, depending on age and sex.

  • @oscargordon
    @oscargordon 2 роки тому +3

Let me see if I get this straight because I’m not sure of the meaning of this “special vow” thing. Let’s start with the easy case. Leviticus 27:14. “‘If anyone dedicates their house as something holy to the Lord”, the priest assigns a value to my house. Now my house belongs to the priests and they can do with it whatever they want. If I want my house back, I have to pay them 20% more than what they said it was worth.
    The same with animals.
From all the previous chapters, people were regularly taking animals to the priests to be sacrificed. Apparently there were so many animals that the priests kept a stockyard because they couldn’t sacrifice and eat them fast enough. So if your goat was still in the priests stockyard, you could buy your goat back at 20% more than what it was worth apparently.
So what does it mean to dedicate a person to the Lord? You can’t find your car keys so you dedicate your 12 year old son to the Lord/priests if Yahweh helps you find them. You pay the priests 20 shekels and give then your son to do with whatever priests do with 12 year boys.
This seems to be different from your land, house, and livestock because there doesn’t seem to be any recourse to buy your son back for 24 shekels whether the vow is upheld or not. Is your son now a slave to the priests? Does it matter whether you find your keys or not?

God could have responded by punishing Jephthah (if it was actually considered a bad thing to promise), but God didn’t even sit by idly (as neutral). Instead, God “handed them over to him”.

From all appearances, if they were Joseph’s sons from a prior marriage (Joseph was older than Mary and so could have been a widower) they would have been seen as Jesus’s half brothers. There is nothing biblically stating that Jesus’s brothers were Mary’s sons.

Priest 1: I will throw the money into air and what money lands outside the circle is god's.
Priest 2: I will throw the money into air and what money lands inside the circle is god's.
Priest 3: I will throw the money into air and what god wants he keeps, and what lands on the ground is ourts.

Isn't Jubilee every 50 year when all debt is forgiven? Thus giving something the year before you get it back is not as god [for the priests] as giving something the year after Jubilee.

So it sounds really callous to put a value on human life. But, adjusted to inflation, hey, we're worth a lot! 😉

When you consider who was writing the OT, aka the priestly class this all makes sense. Since they collected all of god's offerings.

    More interpretation:
"god", "heaven", "angels", "light" - is a church
"devil", "hell", "demons", "darkness" - is world outside of church
    "US vs THEM" mentality.
Dehumanisation is basic method of religious manipulations.
Cults dehumanising and demonizing outside world, outside people, critics, outgroup etc.

This is not quite what it looks like due to not so great translation. This is about pawning slaves to the priesthood, and the price the priesthood will lend you on the collateral of the slave. The amount is negotiable if the slave is weak or unhealthy, but the person who is pawning doesn't get as much as the full value of the slave. The loan must be repayed with 20% interest, or else the collateral is forfeit.

So you don’t think people were borrowing silver from the priests as a loan including tithes? You think babies are being dropped off? You think people are giving there homes? Or don’t you think maybe the tabernacle was also a bank and a hospital. Just a thought.
