One important technique you are skipping over for this sort of music, and general 90-00s era electronic music is that producers would regularly sample themselves.
They would work around polyphony limits, and limited effects processors by creating sounds, sometimes whole motifs, as they wanted to with their gear, recording them into the sampler, then using the sampler and their effects again to further process the sound, and continuing until they created what they were imagining. Many of those super washy pads and drones are the result of multiple resampling passes

Cheers Craig! 100% on the resampling process - I have another video on a similar technique for the washed out pads via sampling. Nothing like the sound of transposed pads coming out of an old sampler

that would actually be slick! im sure one of the 500 AI services out there could make this happen....I may test this out for fun on a few classic tracks LOL

11:05 that transition is super smooth 👌 My "trick" for that gritty sound is to send the dry source sound to a parallel mixer track with a bitcrusher / sample rate reducer and then a subtle reverb on it. So you can freely choose how much grittyness you want

    • @Thought-Forms

Love the tip mate! What are you typically using for a bitcrusher/sample rate reducer? A Tal-DAC or something?

    • @aquanodemusic

@@Thought-Forms nothing fancy, I use the free kiloHearts bitcrusher for that (which also has a knob for changing sample rates) but for me it does the trick! For reverbs I like to use Impulse responses from all kinds of hardware units, it takes some digging but you can find nice ones on the web. For modern reverbs, Native Instruments Raum is now free and that sounds really nice on almost anything.

I've probably said this before, but I have an Alesis Quadraverb GT. I got it because I wanted a hardware multi-effect, has that "sound" you get from old hardware effects, could do some simple sampling, and because it was the cheapest QV I could find.
Also, for "authentic" samples of the era, the Internet Archive has a collection of sounds of old sample CDs that no longer exist.

The GT is solid, I think it's essentially the exact same as the "non GT" - but with a pre-amp slotted in as the first FX on all the configs (which I imagine you could turn off if desired)

Love this channel, I was wondering if you'd ever thought about doing a video on the music from Shenmue? Some of the best tracks (imo) are the ambient ones that aren't even on the OST release, especially 'Free 1'. I've never been able to track down the exact patches, but apparently it was mostly done on a JV-2080, Tr-Rack + Ensoniq MR.

Just wondering, have you tried out the DSP56300 EMU ? Basically loads the real Virus Ti Cards. Sounds mega for certain genres. Would love to see that make an appearance on your channel someday. Also really enjoying your channel, I used to make music all the time, but as of now I pretty much stick to strickly 90's sample CD's and ilegal samples, so I can't exactly "release" them now :( Whole genres were formed from ilegal samples, such a shame how things have become. :(
