    Great video! I did the same thing with a Roland JV-80 using 8 tracks for everything but the piano sound. 90's workstations are still great sounding production tools.

      Wow, much appreciated Rob!! Honor to have you comment. Can you tell us a little more about your setup in the 90s as music technology was rapidly evolving? Around the time of Tokyo Nights, mainly the JV-80? Were you using any samplers? Cheers mate!

    • @planetmullins
      @planetmullins 10 місяців тому +16

      Sure thing. My 90's Rig had both an EmaxII and an Ensoniq Mirage sampler. D50 keyboard version, ESQ1....taking all that stuff on the road was a pain man.On Tokyo Nights all the rock guitar leads are the Mirage, Pads and Brass on the D50 and the JV. There's a PBS TV special on UA-cam where I'm playing all the Tokyo Nights and 5th Gear stuff on that rig if you want to check it out. The JV was the first workstation that made producing radio jazz really easy...bummer that Roland doesn't give you any of the setups or combis that game with the hardware, could have saved a lot of time.@@Thought-Forms

      @Thought-Forms  10 місяців тому +4

      @@planetmullins the EMAX AND a Mirage, super cool! I can't imagine lugging all that on the road. SCSI drives and all? Most impressed the guitars were coming out of the mirage! The PBS special is awesome man, seeing you juggle all those things is a feat in itself. But also incredibly cool to see the band working in tandem with everything. What a performance. Really appreciate the time and comment Rob, lot of folks on this channel geek out over these old school setups - so I know a lot of people will find your insight incredibly valuable and interesting

    • @planetmullins
      @planetmullins 10 місяців тому +4

      Thanks! I had an Anvil briefcase filled with floppy disks for the Mirage that had to be loaded one at a time during the show while playing the 3 synths and the grand piano. Good times! My parents thought I was crazy with all the gear but by 1985 I was already a gear head and a synth geek before those terms were even coined. I look back and think of the 80's and 90's as the great era of synth innovation and I bought or got free almost everything that got manufactured during those day. Didn't get a Korg M1R until 1993...they were too expensive!@@Thought-Forms

      Yeah I wanted it so bad when it came out when I found out how many of my favorite hip hop songs were made with basic Triton presets. But I can’t justify spending the money on it. Eventually I may, but I been using Korg Gadget with Korg Module which has a Triton expansion in it, and hopefully Korg eventually ports the entire Triton vst to iOS which I see no reason they wouldn’t or couldn’t.
      I just got into more mobile beat making recently and am kinda shocked at how high quality these apps are especially Korgs stuff.

    Paul Hardcastle's definitely a legend especially in the smooth jazz & chillout lounge music scenes. One of his signature sounds gotta be the ambient EPs with kinda sparkly texture you can hear in many of his tracks. I watched a video of his studio session and he has all these rack modules and an Emu Emulator so dude definitely got all these hardware mojos present throughout his tracks.
    The concept in this video is really interesting... making a music with just one hardware to do all the instruments parts, or maybe as few as possible with just one sound module and a drum machine. Limitation sparks creativity.

    • @Byronic19134

      @@planetmullinsRoland Cloud is shockingly good as is Zenbeats which many are taking for granted, but with Roland Cloud, and Zenbeats being cross platform from PC to Mac to iOS and Android in itself is actually revolutionary. This is exactly the type of thing I was looking for when I first got into making music but now have already invested into other programs too far to use it.
      But especially for basic music sketching, between Roland Cloud and Korg Gadget and Module, there is nothing you can’t make on the go with high quality sound. What a time to be alive.

    Forgive me but “Smooth Jazz” started as an AC Radio format and was eventually adopted as a Spotify Playlist category. Smooth Jazz is a category not a musical genre. The reason “Smooth Jazz” became so popular yet originally encompassed so many different specific artists and styles, was the programmers found they could present all of them in a rotation and accomplish an overall “feel” for long duration listeners despite the differences from piece to piece. This was a bonanza for ad insertions.
    With its success came all kinds of new productions that wanted to get on Smooth Jazz rotations (and eventually the Smooth Jazz category of Spotify playlists). Smooth Jazz is not a music genre it’s a rotation category. That’s why there’s all kinds of genres in it.

    Triton does indeed have some reverse waveforms in ROM (carried over from predecessor Trinity), which was odd (and a waste of ROM space) since Triton also introduced a reverse-play parameter to play ANY of its ROM samples backwards (making pre-reversed samples redundant). Try reversing those vocal samples!

      Oh man, I never computed that for some reason - but now that I think about it LOL....doesn't make much sense! Lot of fun to be had with this beast. Thanks for the comment!

    Oh wow, Korg Triton had VST version of it? I still have a Triton LE 61 that I would whoop out in occasion if I need a third keyboard or something in live performance. Interesting to see a VST version!

      Yea! Worth checking out, especially if you're used to the LE and don't want to lug it out anymore. They did a bang on job

    Could you make a “Best of” Preset list for the Various Korg synths ? I have the Korg collection, and it’s SO MUCH sounds . I wish I had a experienced sound selector to point me to some starting spots 😬

    • @Thought-Forms
      @Thought-Forms  7 місяців тому

      Use the category browser in any Korg rompler (M1, Triton, Wavestation), & select the "Motion Synths" category - everything in there will sound awesome 😂

    ...What do you think of the original Yamaha Motif 8 - for the same situations?... add the Alesis HR16 -for drums... Heaven!.. Still in my arsenal to this day!...
    ...Have to admit - wrote this before watching - I assumed you had a "real" Korg Triton (I used to)... I didn't even know there was a plugin! ...LOL...

    • @Thought-Forms
      @Thought-Forms  10 місяців тому

      never played with any of the Yamaha stuff, but the Motif 8 is from the early 2000s, no? id assume its pretty close in sound and not too "realistic" sounding - which is where the sauce is. i do have the hardware triton too, the VST just makes life easier LOL. cheers mate

      @@Thought-Forms : Correct! it was released in 2001 ... Actually some of the very best real sounding samples I have ever heard... along with samples of vintage boards as well... Truth is, I own about 10 other vintage boards - DX7, Roland, Korg, Alesis and others... I guess I am a gear head as they say!...Cheers...
