This is an excellent video for people totally new to Gloomhaven. It concisely shows how the game is played without having to suffer through someone stumbling through a Let's Play, reading every text box, etc... This approach for an introductory video is what I like. Nice Job!
Fantastic video! I bought this game on sale and played for like 20 minutes and said "aw hell no, this game seems like more work than it does fun." And because of this video I now know that my initial thought was completely correct. HOWEVER... I now know the basics and can jump in if I ever decide to do so again. This is all based on personal preference, of course. But again, thank you for an easy to understand introduction to the world of Gloomhaven. 👍
@@Robadobb289 I fully intended to play it despite playing on tabletop and I never got around to it. It’s a very solid turn-based strategy game, but it doesn’t hold any punches.
Very good video! I was the intended recipient, not having played the board game and had my eyes on the digital. Now I know I'm too stupid for this game. Thanks! Saved me some money!!
This is a good primer on a fairly complex game. Well done! A couple of notes I might add: 1. It can be helpful to review and compare all your cards' abilities against each other at the same time while in game. This can be accomplished using the left-Alt key. 2. Initiative does not need to be determined by the first card selected. The initiative can be chosen from either card during card selection by clicking on the preferred initiative number on the card list side bar. 3. It might be worth noting that on cards which have more than one ability listed in a selected area, such as the Trample card shown, those abilities must be resolved in order. In the case of Trample's bottom selection, the Move action must occur before the Attack action. The Move action(and any actions associated with it) can be skipped, but it cannot happen after the Attack action on Trample. In any case, great tutorial here! I'm noticing a lot of confusion on game mechanics by those down-voting on Steam, and this provides good clarification on many of those issues. I'm yes voting this there to get it higher on the list, and I'm looking forward to how this game develops over the next year. Enjoy!
Thanks very much for the support! I didn't know about the initiative swapping, so that's handy. Other points are great too, hopefully people will stop by and read the comments too!
Honestly though, anyone downvoting the game because they don't understand the mechanics, should really take the time to read the compendium, it does a good job of teaching you what's what. Not nearly as good as this video, but in my first steps into the game, a quick read of the compendium was enough to get me started. I looked up a guide to see if i was missing anything, and picked up a couple of extra tips though. Great game either way, makes me want to get into the tabletop, but i have no friends, so this'll have to do :D
@@Roguhr You can play the tabletop solo, but this is so much easier to get into without the set up and pull down. That being said, it's only going to get better from here too!
Really enjoyed watching the video! I went ahead and purchased the game on Steam earlier today and I'll be playing it here soon. :) I'll be sure to report back if I run into any problems!
Thank you - tried to play this yesterday for the first time and was totally confused. In about 15 minutes, I feel so much better about getting back into the game.
thank you for making this high level explanation, i wanted to explain the game to a friend and this one is as you put out to make it: its short but explains how combat works well without getting lost in details
I started nodding off while completing the tutorial in game, so I thought I would find a youtube video to watch instead. Here I am watching yours and I'm still nodding off! maybe this game is not for me.... or maybe I just need a nap. Zzzz.... lol. thanks for the great, simplified tutorial. Cheers
You're welcome! Learning a complicated game's rules will always be a little dry - even if people try to make it entertaining. The game itself is fun to play if you can push through!
Fantastic video! Super clear. I have played the entire board game campaign with a group of friends over a year or so and your explanation was perfect. I have "yes" voted your comment on Steam. Nice to hear a fellow Aussie.
One thing worth pointing out that you missed explaining in your video is the progress bar below the scenario goal (Kill all enemies in all rooms) which shows how close you are to completing that goal and gives you a hint on how many rooms (and especially how many enemies) you have left.
This is a great point actually. I had a few other things I wanted to get in the video (like how to actually use items) that didn’t make the cut, but this would have been a simple one to include!
Brilliant video. I was struggle to find out how exactly damage modifiers work in this game. On side note - I really dislike this mechanic. IMO i think add unnecessary complexity RNG element to one very complex and difficult to learn game. Thanks for the great video. 👍
As you level up your characters you can stack the damage modifier deck in your favour and it makes for some decent character growth. There is an option somewhere to change the null and the x2 into a -3 and +3 respectively (I think?).
Yup! There’s guide someone made about how burning cards early affects your total time to live, and it can cut your life significantly. Even without burning cards it can be difficult to survive an entire mission if they’re long. Stamina potions are your friend.
I guess I missed something I don't understand how movement works and I just burn cards constantly idk how to not do that I mean movement should just be a thing you can do
Hey, useful sections of my video to rewatch might be 2:03 which explains the breakdown of a card, and then 7:13 which explains taking a turn, how to move and and how to avoid burning cards. If you’ve not engaged with this mechanic before it can be a bit confusing at first. You do get a default move on every card “for free”, but moves being treated as card actions allow for your character to do bigger moves or add abilities to the move, which gives you a lot of freedom when you understand the mechanic.
Do you have any insight on how the game decides who acts first for tied initiative? I have not managed to figure that out yet, and I have had a couple bad turns where I really wanted one of my characters to go before the other for stuff like "using magic before the next character refreshes the same magic type", but then the wrong character activated first.
At the moment, there’s absolutely no contest. Tabletop. Getting a few friends together to play and be social will trump an online experience for me. Currently the digital version doesn’t even have multiplayer, so it can’t be compared. That being said, I would more likely play the digital version than play the Tabletop version solo, and when multiplayer and the campaign is released, that might suit people with friends who aren’t local.
At the moment our Early Access on Steam offers only the roguelike mode we have created called "Adventure Mode". This digital exclusive mode covers both combat and exploration. The full board game experience will be available at full launch, including the original full Campaign and multiplayer coop.
I knew they'd go over their planned deadline. I haven't played it much since I made this video, to be honest, so I don't know how it's shaping up. Unfortunate that you didn't like it, but I guess you can't please everyone!

If initiative is tied, the second card is your tiebreaker! If you and an enemy are tied, you go first, as enemies don’t have a second card!
