Definitely didn't find Withering Claw to be remotely useful, woulda tossed it earlier. But overall I'd say we definitely agree. Very concise and that level 6 tier is just hilarious how both cards really overshadow the next few. I like the analysis!
Perfect build video MQ! I reckon you’ll smash some views if you get all the classes up in this same manner. All the information that someone would be after presented in a really nice way. The exact build I ended up with at level 9 with my MT. I did add frost generating equipment as they became available just to maximise the frost as I also played her in a party with the spell weaver who also made use of the frost for Cold Fire so they worked well together. I also took the “ignore negative scenario effects” relatively early and it felt good when we had like 7 consecutive scenarios with negative effects and the other players were adding curses and negatives in while I was nice and free. Definitely depends on the luck of the scenario draw though. Keep up the good work man, you’ll be doing well with these vids!! Cheers, Danboygomes.
Daniel Kurz thanks for the kind words Dan, yeah I thought there was a good opportunity for some straight forward guides. The editing nearly killed me on this one but it should get easier for future classes.

Make more guides like this! And please focus also on "sideboard" because with many classes you need a flex slot for that occasional loot or other situational cards...
If you play in a 2 player game, you need other card choices to make cause we play mindthief and spellweaver together. One is constantly doing ranged attacks to multiple targets as spellweaver and mindthief, finishes them of with high power attacks. Sometimes the strategys are against each other and mindthief focuses on 1 edge of a room and spellweaver the other end of the room. If you really play together with both classes against a elite or boss fight it is the best to stun them with mindthief or immobilize and don't go to quickly with ranged attacks on mulitple monsters will lead to better control of the movement of monsters as the mindthief always goes first and spellweaver always goes last in turn order.
That is a particularly difficult starting pairing I would say unless you are on point with your stuns all the time. 2P does warp the game a bit so I agree you would need to potentially use other cards occasionally or tweak the build. I would actually encourage 2P parties to pick up an extra mercenary each to play with 4 total to get the most out of the game.
PookelyWoo yeah I’m still new to this and the editing took me forever, I’m thinking of streamlining it a bit but I really like trying to put out something polished. Thanks for watching and the comment.
Hi, thanks for the very informative and excellent video. I am brand new to Gloomhaven and have 2 friends that I usually DM some D&D5e on FGU once a week, but was looking for a new fun game for us to play on the weeks I don’t feel like DMing. I know of the incredible reputation of the board game, and I am glad they now have this digital online version for me and my out-of-state friends to possibly play. I just subscribed to your channel and wish you great success as a new content provider. I have just one request if I may, as someone who suffers from ADD and a host of other issues I find the constant repetitive background tune both distracting and sorry to say, grating on my nerves. I would greatly appreciate if in future videos they could be melody free. Thank you again for this very useful and well done video.
I agree the Mindthief is a difficult class to play. You can specialize towards debuffs, crowd control, movement, damage, and everything in between. I've loved my Mindthief because I can flexibly cater to the needs of the party, even mid-mission.
Another great character guide, thanks! The only thing I would say with many of your guides though is I disagree with your perk selection. Mathematically, it does not make sense to take dust so early (if ever). If you keep the +0 cards in that is 4 more chances of not drawing the null card. Your best chance of having a positive outcome is to bulk out your modifier deck as much as possible. Therefore, you should get cards that increase the deck size first (not rolling modifiers though). Then you should replace negatives with positives. Keeping the +0 cards in also allows you to take the rolling modifiers as you are less likely to roll into a null. I'm also a big fan of taking ignore scenario effects with mindthief early. Starting disarmed with a squishy character is not good at all!
That is true if you discount advantage/strengthen which can help you cycle your deck very quickly and avoid those negative cards still. It also allows you to hit increased damage numbers more frequently. I agree with ignore negative scenario perks though, generally they equal out as good value over a lengthy campaign stint with a character.
Thanks glad you enjoyed it! :) A few can be good when combo'd with other classes, and the level 9 summon is a stand out fan favourite that's pretty good.
Just started with the MT and love him, but early on he is lacking non loss movements. Level 1 build here only has 3 non loss moves (not counting scurry, which is ideally used offensively). Perhaps it’s poor card choices, but I’ve occasionally found myself unable to move enough. Especially late in scenarios on larger maps.
I am always surprised to hear people went for mass hysteria at level 5. I really like frozen mind and found that it was a very reliable stunner (I was able to stun at least 1 enemy per round, if I juggled the ice element correctly). But maybe it was also cause it felt more cool to me. Same thing for level 9: when I had the chance to summon the rat king, I took it! Super cool, probably stupid
Frozen mind is good it’s just that the minds weakness warps the whole class unfortunately. Rat King is legit cool though, and at level 9 totally just take whatever you think is going to be more fun as you’ll likely probably retire pretty soon.
That's an awesome pairing. Sun is a brilliant tank, and Mindthief has great damage and control. Healing should be fine, but you might struggle a little bit against large groups of enemies with no great area of effect attacks.
Thanks a lot, I would love if you include in this guides who will be good with the character presented, any ideas for the mindthief frost warrior? We are playing on boardgame and its my first character, im falling in love of him/her ^^
Mindthief has low health so pairs well with the brute or other tank classes. In general though the mindthief is a very versatile character so you can’t go too wrong with pairings. I hope this helps and thanks for the comment.
Hey there nice video! I have been starting lately with Jaws of the lion and I have a question about the perks part in the video. According to your edit in perks you get a perk at lvl 1 as well. Do you start out with a perk once you start a character on lvl 1? Because I would have missed that in our Jotl playthrough.
No you only start with a perk after retirements. Each retirement will grant you an extra perk but because there's no retirements in Jaws of the Lion you don't have to worry about that.
It's also 150 on digital. IDK if maybe in an earlier version when the video was made it was priced lower or it was just a mistake (as poison, wound, and curse are all 75), but I just went and checked, and it is indeed the same cost as tabletop, 150g.
Would you say Possession + Rat Swarm is a decent combo for lv 1-2? I know both cards get really weak past that, but I thought the movement from possession combos nicely with a summon whose only negative is its movement. If so, what starting cards would you replace with the two?
Mado Kureo it’s not a bad combo at all but a bit all in. I don’t think possession is particularly good without the summon, so if you were to get a bit unlucky and the summon dies you are stuck with it. It could be used with your teammates though so it still has a use. Mass hysteria can be a little underwhelming because of the low damage so i don’t mind picking the summon over it, just be aware of how much frost you need. I would get rid of parasitic influence and withering claw considering you now have poison from your rat swarm buddies 😁
Thanx 4 your gr8 guides MQ. Question: If Vicious Blood (augment) is active does the Retaliate stack up? 4 example: If I then play Pilfer bottom and Cranium Overload top (attacking say 3 enemies) would my retaliate then be 10 for the round?
and you could double augment and get 5 shield this way.. then have all the enemies attack you (since your initiative is 5) and just kill them that way.
@@doviepstein It does I'm afraid, its been clarified in the official FAQ. If any part of the attack has range then the whole thing is considered ranged. I agree its a bit odd and its a little rule that often causes confusion. Another card ruled this way is Clear the Way on the Cragheart. Thematically though it does make sense, how would you use your melee swords and abilities when the enemy is maybe on the other side of the room :)
@@MandatoryQuest Thanks! Overall I'm really confused about whether you can do the 2nd part of an ability if you haven't done the 1st one. For example, in Jaws of the Lion, the Red Guard has a card that says: "Loot 1, create element". Can you create the element if you looted nothing? Another Red Guard's card says: "Attack, move, attack". Can you move and/or make the 2nd attack if you didn't make the 1st attack?
@@RajamQED Usually if the text is on a separate line then it is not tied to the use of another ability. Jaws of the Lion does a good job of separating this with the little .... line breaks e.g Shocking advance for the Red Guard you can shield without attacking by consuming light element. For blinding sickle you would need to loot 1 to make the element, same with the bottom of shocking advance you would need to move. Gloomhaven is not always as obvious because the .... line breaks were not introduced yet, however most of the element generation does depend on you doing something.
I just want to point out that the reason this particular mindthief doesn't have enough gold (as you can see on the character-sheet) is because he doesn't pilfer. Makes you think, doesn't it?
How did you use all four actions on your cards in two consecutive turns? Don’t you discard them once one combination is used? I may be misunderstanding
Would you say a summoning based build is viable? She's only level three for me. And I'm definitely still learning the game. But she's been struggling. Especially with moving.
It’s possible but it’s not optimal. It depends on your party make up really as you will need help to take down enemies. Outside of a few high level exceptions summons drop off as they don’t scale to your level, also as you don’t control them they will often do stupid stuff to get themselves killed.
@@MandatoryQuest Yeah I've noticed that unfortunately. That's a shame. May still play around with it later. As summoners are some of my favorite classes to play when you can. But so far it's been kinda hit or miss. Especially when running two summons in a deck.
If you can pair with a class that can support your summons well e.g music note then it becomes a lot more viable, you’ll also need stamina potions a plenty as you will be burning cards early.
You mention replacing cards when you level up but in the rules (tabletop) it says “add one new card”... I thought you got more cards in you hand when you level up...
Nope your max hand size never changes from the amount listed on your character mat. You just add more cards to your available pool of cards to choose from to go on missions with. So when I say replace it’s taking better cards over the worse ones.
This was the very first guide I did. I'm actually going back and redoing these early ones in the same style as my later longer ones. Spellweaver one is coming out later this week 😉

John Nny yeah when you first start adventure mode there should be a location highlighted that you need to get to, beat that boss and you unlock the 3rd character. Then you need to beat another boss to unlock the 4th, but I think that can be the first boss again with the 3 character group. Yep I also ran around for a bit at first and took a detour, it’s all good XP and gold gathering though so not wasted.
Why you would drop CO at level 9 over BL or MH is beyond me. CO is such a better card at any level for the 5 initiative, insta kill and movement. Mass Hysteria is such a bad card. It is pretty much useless at level 9. You can generate frost with a lot of your other cards and muddle is overrated. That card is junk.
I have meant to go back and redo some of these older guides. I don’t disagree with you. Mass hysteria is OK for people playing on normal difficulty or in certain scenarios, and once you do have a maxed out perk deck it’s not terrible, but attack 1 is obviously trash at high levels. CO is good movement and a useful kill spell so that’s also fine to keep in instead. It’s worth noting too that with characters with small hand sizes at higher levels it’s all about side board options and player choice, but in these guides I have to obviously suggest 1 to drop. I will be redoing this guide in the future to match my newer longer form guides and probably changing it too.
