These are the 12 reasons why grown men collect items: 1. Nostalgia, 2. Community, 3. Escapism, 4. Safe addiction, 5. Artistry, 6. Deprived as a child, 7. Stress release, 8. A way to connect with their children, 9. Character connection, 10. Investment, 11. I want to, 12. I can. Excellent video! I loved every minute of it. However, being a perfectionist I do not recommend smoking when you have a collection! Thank you for sharing. Greetings from Malta.
AND women! I'm 53 and collect action figures. Star Wars, Marvel, GOT, TWD and some DC. I was eight when Star Wars came out and that was my childhood. But I also played with Barbie. I still collect both. ❤️
This was a great video man and I agree with all of it I basically collect for nostalgia, escapism, relating to characters, artistry and because I want to and also because to support characters I find interesting and entertaining to me when I read it in a book or watching it on tv 😎💯🔥🔥🔥🔥
It's nostalgia for me ! Being a adult, I can buy any figure I want. With companies like Super7 bringing out old school figures like Thundercats, Silverhawks....it's a great time to be a collector👍🏾
Nice list. Glad you hit on artistry. Don't hear this as much from collectors. The character designs & then sculpting/painting a 3D fig from a 2D art form. So dope.
DS I'm 47. I got out of action figures back in the late 80s early 90s. I thought that is what natural progression was. I still had this love for Transformers and GIJOE. Seven years into my adulthood I got married and had a new born son. One day I walk into Walmart (1997) and I saw Beast Wars on to endcap. Thought they were ugly, but seeing Transformers back on the shelf sparked something in me and over time I got back into collecting. Here I am at 47 and I still collect. Action figures gave me an escape from reality when I was a kid and the thrill of collecting now does the same.
I'm 39 I love collecting action figures, statues, from video games to film. I love the art, I love the nostalgia, the badassery, it makes me feel young again
Same, artistry. I am a artist and that's my #1 reason. Sometimes I'm into characters that I don't even know who they are just because how well done they are.
Dope video. It was definitely nostalgia for me that got me into collecting. But it was also a level of artistry in action figures that kept me invested. Also having characters you love as action figures are the closet thing to having these characters come to life.
Wow, I love the way you broke this hobby down in to 10 very good reasons to collect. All your 10 reasons for collecting are mine as well. You hit the nail on the head on all 10. BRILLIANT! I've been collecting since I was a child and I also create handmade high fashion dolls in resin. It's been a life long passion and I'm finally doing it. I love the last reason the best..........because I want to and I can! I'm a new subscriber. So glad I stumbled upon your channel!
Man, you made me think why I love 1/6 scale figures so much. Back in the day growing up. I collected figures. Like G.I. Joe, Steve Austin as Six Million Dollar Man, Jamie Summers as Bionic Woman, BigFoot, etc. I believe another reason we love these figures are because we both are artist like you said. l love the construction and painting of these figures. Some are just spot on. It kind of bring us back to our good old days as kids. Things were peaceful. Good reasons why us grown men collect action figures.
I also like jsut playing with them lmao. But not playing the way a toddler would, I’ll pose them in different ways, especially ones with articulation. I’ll pose them in ways. Like I’ll make my medieval spawn fight my ninja spawn and pose them in ways clashing swords.
I'm the same way. I just got into WWE action figures. I have three: Hulk Hogan (because he was the guy who got me into wrestling as a young kid), Roman Reigns (w/the WWE Undisputed Championship and the _ula fala,_ because he _IS the Original Tribal Chief!),_ and Seth Rollins with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, because he was the inaugural World Heavyweight Champion when the title was re-introduced. I might get a few more, I haven't decided yet. But all three figures are in poses I've seen on TV.
Big ups bro !! You nailed it on all of those .. I was like this video gone be weak , but you was 💯💯 on all those reasons and so I appreciate this one because now I can share this video with other fools who look at me crazy like why is this 47 yr old man collecting “ toys “ .. Preciate it bruh 🙏🏾👌🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾

Great stuff here. Thanks. I started collecting via 2016 because after peeping these MPs out in the late 2000s, I was surprised @ how they progressed. Seeing how the community was growing- made me feel more comfortable about collecting as an adult. Truthfully (in the beginning), never thought I’d be collecting since via I was just previously colllecting guns. To me, more a positive arena, i was good to go with that. Again, thanks for sharing.
Absolutely all points here, mine particular are how tech has made figures look and feel better. Give me articulation any DAY over the cheap releases from back in the day. Take a TMNT that has 5 pts (arms, legs up & down, head left to right) versus a 34+ with joints, ab crunch, swivel, etc.
Love your stuff DS. I can relate to multiple of these. Nostalgia is the biggest and got me back into collecting. My brother collects stuff and as a gift he found and bought for me an old Kenner Star Wars play set. I had it as a kid and loved it but it was thrown out as we got older. After he bought it for me I was intrigued to see what was happening in Transformers. I looked up Soundwave figures and was blown away by the choice. That led me picking up an MP Soundwave and then the portal opened. Another thing I'd add to the list which is kind of like your creativity point, I love photographing my figures. Getting them into cool poses and creating images. That is a really relaxing and creative hobby in addition to collecting.
Great reasons, thank u. For me I got to a place where my kids grew up pretty much and I had more expendable income and took the plunge in 2018 starting with the maketoys seekers. Haven’t looked back. Almost done with my g1 cartoon cast. Nostalgia and the art of these MP figures are big for me. Couldn’t have them as a kid, but now I can!
I related to every point of your ten. Community is so big now because of UA-cam I can connect with like minded dudes like you. One thing for me is I'm retired and my kids are grown and gone. Now Hot Toys are comin in the house instead of Kenner!
The drive to collecting action figures for me has always been like “anesthetic” for my near permanently scarred heart, after the apocalyptic day in high school back in 2016, a heartbreak from a terrible senior girl who turned my once pure heart to ash. I could rat out on her and talk shit about her for years(which I always did when I had to talk this out with anyone). Basically after that tragic day I never talked to anyone again, not even fellow girl classmates trying to comfort me, action figures had completely become my anesthetic preventing me from feeling the emotional pain from that shitty girl ever again
Dope vid bro. Shit doesn’t help anything that my wife also collects one-sixth and Statue’s and every anniversary/holiday we always know what we getting from each other lol
It sort of relates to escapism. To feel some control in a world we have little control in. Making dioramas and populating them with figures is like our own little world. I agree that it’s not a good way of investing money and your other reasons.
